Love this series

It is simply back and forth torture. But even though it is quite repetitive, I love this book series, and will continue to read the books.

A New Direction

It is not easy writing a long series full of action and with plenty of cliffhangers, but Francine Pascal is managing it. In this volume (#31), Gaia has to deal with her father being away again. That means she will stay in a boarding house specially set up for agents' children.

It is during this confusion that Gaia, through a series of new characters, may have found a way to become normal. Add the usual relationship dramas, a nasty new street drug and more complications that most books of this size could hold and you get a fast-paced rush of a story.

Here is what everyone is up to:

Gaia - Trying to become normal.

Ed - Still trying to get over his Gaiabetes and define his new girlfriend.

Tom - Away on assignment.

Oliver - Concerned about Gaia and becoming more forceful.

Jake - Still hooked on Gaia and loving it.

The Queen of Toothpaste, et al - The new rich kids and family. They attend Gaia's school but seem to have sought her out.

Shadowy Agents - More spies and agents running around making observations, leaving the reader to guess desperately as to who they are working for.

Note: This volume mentions Gaia's brother (from Gaia Abducted) thus tying in some of the events of Super Edition #2 (although much of it still contradicts the main series).

Gaia's changing, and it's not good.

Normal starts out typically. The first few pages plunge the reader into the usual journal-like thoughts of Gaia Moore, and then advances quickly with little exposition. Rather than Gaia's point of view, the first section takes place with two gang members buying a heavy-duty drug from a dealer who calls himself "God". The reason they need this drug is to fight Gaia for revenge. Twice they assault her. The first time, she effortlessly fights all eight of them off with her friend Jake. The second time takes place later on.

There's no shortage of action here, as usual. However, if Gaia from book #1 and this book's Gaia had met, the older girl would have *loathed* this girl. Gaia here is a cheesy, sentimental shadow of her former self. Her sappiness is no doubt from her new relationship with Jake Montone. Also troubling is Gaia's sudden desire to "follow the rules," so to speak. This wouldn't be so bad; however, it leads Gaia to live in a boardinghouse and hang out with the annoying "perfect popular people" she once happily avoided. If the character were anyone *but* Gaia, this would be highly acceptable and even encouraged. Instead, it's bothersome and annoying. The real Gaia isn't cookie-cutter preppy popular girl; she's an independent kicker-of-ass, defender of the innocent. Not sappy or sentimental or maudlin or just plain cheesy.

Eventually Gaia feels that the craziness that always starts up must end. For some reason, though, her solution is to go to a scientist who comes up with a serum to give her real fear. Not an hour after this is done, she's attacked by the gang members in the park. Her reaction this time is to duck into the bushes and hide, and then run home.

A great book for leisure reading!

This book was referred to me by a relative and I was looking for some light reading after finishing a very long and intense series of books. This book really hit the spot for me and was a delightful read.I thought the characters were very believable and enjoyed getting to know them with a bit of Irish culture thrown in as well. Unlike other romance novels, there was none of the gratuitous sex but a welcome progression toward a loving relationship. This is a book older children could read and enjoy. I look forward to reading more books by this new author.

Sorry

This book, while it was a cute idea, never grew or explored anything in particular. Every character was predictable, and the story itself was virtually about what a harpist and Irishman talk about while walking around New York. I'm a harpist, and it was the only reason I had any affection towards this book (Do you know how hard it is to find a book with a character who plays HARP?!). Not worth reading unfortunately.

Great Story

I believe this is Shea's first. She really did a good job. Was really interesting. Shea needs to write a sequel to this story - it leaves one wanting more!

Finally something for those kids!

Finally someone has written a book to appeal to adolescents that have come to the United States from a foreign land. They deserve to have something to read also. Come it coming, Wanda.

Hispanic girls should read this.

The books in The Latina Series are about girls who were brought to this country by their families, quite often by crossing Mexico and the Rio Grande.

They have grown up in a country that doesn't want them.

Each story is about a girl's quest to find the life that is right for her.

Often that means choosing between family, friends, boyfriends, and educational opportunities.

'summer of dolores', first in the series, is about a girl named Dolores; dolores is the Spanish word for pain. She has adapted well to the U.S. and is ready to graduate from high school and attend college. Her mother, she assumed dead, appears and expects Dolores to rescue her and her other two children from a life of violence and poverty in Guatemala.

Uncomfortable and Unenjoyable

Im really sorry if youre reading this hoping for some insight because I am at an utter loss about how to review Almost Tall.

I just have no idea what the heck I am supposed to take away from this exceedingly brief, albeit well written prose.

Yes, I hesitate to even call Almost Tall a story. Nothing really seems to happen but Im certain the author is trying make some kind of point that is just lost.

There is some truly great character set up I want to give absolute credit to the author for that. In fact, the great character seems tragically wasted.

Finally, I have to address the homosexual content. I cannot be sure, since the authors intentions are so muddled on every level, but homosexuality and homosexual relationships seem to be a target for criticism, cynicism and even revulsion in Almost Tall.

The idea that the author would take this view point is utterly offensive.

But did he? Or did he mean to?

Who can tell!?

All I know is that I was left feeling vaguely offended and uncomfortable making Almost Tall an unenjoyable read that I do not recommend.

Compelling

This is a very compelling, dark novel that should appeal to fans of Japanese Noir. While not a crime novel, it is a very dark fable of what happens when kids are bullied and rebel against the bullies in their lives. When the kids are given a chance to find some redemption, they find that the world is not so forgiving.

The characters are both heartbreaking and fascinating. I loved each of them and rooted for them throughout.

While an intelligent novel, it's also a fast read. The plot and characters move things along so quickly that, before you know it, you've reached the very satisfying ending.

To be completely honest, as I'd never heard of the author before, I sort of hesitated before spending the money on this one. However, I don't regret the purchase. This is a great read and I've already recommended it to friends and family.

Fascinating story draws you in from the first page...

I loved this book.

This is a story about a group of teenagers trying to move past the stigma of their convictions for serious crimes they committed against their tormentors as a result of having been bullied. The novel moves seamlessly between the present, during which the teens take a supervised journey as part of their rehabilitation, and the past, in which their crimes and the events leading up to them are revealed.

I was reminded of Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, both for this book's similarly beautiful characterization of Japanese social mores, as well how fluidly the reader is transported back and forth across time. The author's descriptions of his characters are rich and full, making each memorable for his or her part in the unfolding drama of the book. This story, although taking place in a constrained Japanese milieu, reminds us that bullying and its traumatic aftershocks transcends culture.

89th Temple was a great read

Well written, this first novel of Charlie Canning reveals the ugly, hidden side of Japanese society that is unseen by those from the outside. Will the Japanese society ever come to terms with the societal bullying that is condoned in a homogenous society? Read this book to find out. Truly heart-breaking. I couldn't put it down.

Wonderful story especially since I just watched the Sacred Journey series on PBS where they featured the Shikoku pilgrimage in one of the episodes.I think the idea of a "healing journey" is an inspired one.Well written and entertaining as well as informative!

Endurance Runner

Craig Hansen's novel about a high school track runner progresses at the pace of a marathon rather than a sprint. His sentences have a gentle rhythm, and the story moves at a calm and measured pace. Hansen has extensive experience in writing, and you can tell that his plainspoken narrative is purposefully accomplished rather than accidental. Possibly, some readers won't like the pace, but it is done well and consistently.

The author allows the main character Becky to suffer--at times intensely--and doesn't give her any easy wins on or off the track. Good descriptions of Becky's life as a runner give the novel some of the nicer Becky-focused moments of tension. Hansen also does a good job showing the everyday ordinariness of life during rather extraordinary times.

And this probably segues well to something I didn't like. I found some stretches to be overly descriptive for my taste. I like description to advance the action of the plot and not merely my awareness of the character's surroundings or habits. For me, such details had the effect of slowing down an already quiet tempo.

Also, there are times when the lives of adult secondary characters dwarf that of the main teen character. (I.e., their lives are just plain more interesting than Becky's.) For me, this occasional shift of focus onto the adults distracted me from investing in Becky as the most interesting and compelling character.

However, by the end of the story, I found myself sympathetic to Becky and genuinely interested in finding out what would happen to her. I very much enjoyed experiencing Becky's epiphany at the novel's close; many large events pile atop one another, and she draws some good conclusions about herself, her needs, and her future.

Good Christian Young Adult Novel

Most Likely delves into some tough topics. The characterization was very well done and Becky was a typical teenager struggling with difficult situations, temptations, and doubts. She experienced an emotional roller coaster and I was along for the ride, chiding her, cheering her, and crying with her. I liked how the main character was so realistic and believable, she wasn't perfect. The Christian elements were handled very well, incorporated into the story and Becky's life in a natural way without being overbearing. This was a realistic look at a typical teenager trying to remain true to her Christian faith in a fallen world. Well worth the price and time.

Sympathetic heroine, good message

Becky Howard has a dilemma. How can she help her best friend deal with abuse if she promised she wouldn't reveal it to anyone? In addition, she deals with peer pressure and all the things teens deal with. She was a very sympathetic heroine, and while this is a Christian book, it wasn't in your face.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too

Against her better judgment, Sydney asks her friends, Anna and Eve, to do a tarot card reading for her.

Something is going on with her dad; she's afraid he may have lost his job again and that her mother might be too fed up with him this time for them to stay married. Although Sydney has never really believed that the cards can tell the future, both Anna and Eve have had such good luck with their recent readings--Anna getting a good boyfriend and Eve auditioning for a reality show--and Syd finally grows worried enough to find out what the future holds for her father.

Instead of reassuring her, the reading turns up bad, even ending with the Death card. Sydney swears that this is her punishment for trying to cheat the system and look ahead, but maybe it's not real. Maybe, if she believes hard enough, she can prevent her dad spiraling out of control and the breakdown of her family. She resolves that she's going to maintain her trust in her father, the only person who really understands her shyness, dedication to music, and love of all living things.

With Anna and Eve overly involved in their own lives and promising futures, Syd starts to feel that she and her friends are growing apart, and she doesn't have the tools to handle it yet.
