The Final Voyage of the Sea Explorer

This story begins with Josh Alexander & his best friend Jimmy setting out on an adventure after high school graduation. Both had been taking diving lessons & as a graduation gift, Josh's dad sends the pair on a scuba diving vacation to the Bahamas. In the adventure of a lifetime, Boren takes us along with Josh & Jimmy on their diving expeditions. Vivid descriptions of sea life- the majestic beauty and breath taking landscape of the sea are described in terrific detail. The unknown dangers become real as Josh & Jimmy dive in various areas. Unknown to them, the captain of the Sea Explorer is on a path of his own- to find out the location of the infamous Black Widow's ship wreck. Through the perils that befall the duo diving, Josh encounters Holly and a relationship blossoms. This is a very fast-paced read and very well written. Although part of a series, Final Voyage works well as a stand alone. I highly recommend this for young adults looking for a great adventure. I am looking forward to reading other works by Boren in this series.

Exciting Fiction Written by a Master Scuba Diver!

The Final Voyage of the Sea Explorer by Douglas Boren is a book of fiction in motion that is threaded with descriptive and vivid reality. It is a story that only a master scuba diver could tell, and one that is aimed at young adult readers. Danger, adventure, and mystery lurk throughout the pages, but this is balanced by the delight of young, blossoming love, bonding friendships, and the feeling of independence that young adults enjoy when they are on vacation away from their parents.

And how did this scuba diving vacation in the Bahamas come about? Josh Alexander is given this vacation as a special graduation present-one set up by his father. His best friend Jimmy joins him in what they expect to be a fabulous seven-day vacation of scuba diving while aboard the Sea Explorer. However, the two young men quickly learn that diving in the ocean is quite different and much more dangerous than diving in the lakes of Kentucky back home.

Potential readers who are skeptical of curses and fortune tellers might possibly change their minds after reading this book. There is a scene where Josh and Jimmy tangle with a drug dealer who becomes infuriated when he fails to talk Jimmy into making a "buy" from him. He announces that he is putting a curse on these two Americans-promising that before three days pass, death will fall upon them.

Hard to put down.

Closure is a brutally honest look at the world of contracted mercenaries. Russell paints a picture of a broken young man that finds his talent is emotionless violence. He spares no detail, from the man's politics to his penchant for feeding birds. The story never lags as he takes us through the planning, execution and aftermath of each contract. There's a lot to love about that premise, and it's gets great when he find himself at odds with other hitmen, fellow killers that feel that socialism is the best construct for the economy of contract killing.

The book keeps you entertained, and gives you a satisfying and horrifying conclusion. I highly recommend this author.

An Amazing Book

I intended for this book to be a casual read, however after the first ten minutes I found myself submerged into the story. The author puts in such detail and blends together so many different aspects of life, that I was touched by how emotionally attached I became with the characters. One of the best qualities of this book is how every twist and turn seems to catch you off guard and without warning will come right out of nowhere. This book kept me guessing with every page and even the parts I tried to anticipate happened in ways I could have never imagined. I absolutely loved reading Closure and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested.

Also, if youâre like me and enjoy having the audiobook too, the narrator did a superb job portraying the bookâs characters and seemed to make each of them come to life.

Interesting and Intriguing story

I read the book in 2-3 days. The story is a quick read, and keeps the reader engaged which is always nice. It was an interesting read, being familiar with many of the areas where the story takes place made it a bit more real for me. The story is fairly brutal in parts, but that was the intent by the author. A few parts are a bit rushed and as a reader I would have liked more details at points, but nothing essential is missing from the story, no key information is absent. If you are looking for a happy love story, or a novel about finding happiness in a dark world, this isn't the book for you.

A wonderful Love Story, addictively undramatic!

Since I liked Elenor & Park a lot, I went straight to the next Rainbow Rowell book. The recently released Fangirl. What a wonderful love story. Rainbow Rowell wields an effortless power over words and characters. I became a Fangirl-fan after only a few minutes, the story has a great flow and is extremely addictive without being overly dramatic. No villains, no death, no great deception, not a lot of crying and all the same. I grew so attached to Cather and all her friends. I would have loved for the story to never end.

The Narration by Rebecca Lowman is perfect. Her voices are distinctive without being overacted. Five Stars. Maxwell Caufield is a bit over the top for my taste, but since he is only reading the Simon Snow Excerpts at the beginning of the chapters, it was sort of funny.

Freshman Comes into Her Own

After devouring Eleanor and Park, sought out another Rainbow Rowell novel. Did my best to let go of the previous characters and give this one a new focus and attention.

Cathe's twin is moving in a different direction as they enroll in college. Alone, nervous, a little odd, she spends most of her time writing fan fiction in a Harry Potteresque world; Simon Snow and Bas. She has a huge fan base yet can't seem to devote the same amount of attention into her fiction assignments.

Some of the characters are predictable and some surprise you. Took me a little while to adjust to the Simon Snow pieces (as narrated by 80's hottie, Maxwell Caufield), but found the ending of both storylines tied up nicely. Rebecca Lowman is superb as Cathe, who is awkwardly searching for a foothold in friendship, possibly love, and her future in writing. Worthy novel for an entertaining read.

Odd premise, excellent audiobook

Would you listen to Fangirl again? Why?

I will listen to every book Rainbow Rowell writes, but it will be a while before I re-listen. When I want to time travel to revisit my own early college anxieties / small victories, I will re-listen to this book.

Sad coming of age story

A coming of age story that is witty, profound, and sad, it reminds me of a Curious Case of a Dog in the Midnight but with cancer instead of autism. Yet it is original in tone and character and observations on human nature.

I would have hoped for a happy ending

What a beautifully written story. I guess, because it had so many funny moments, I never saw the sad ending coming. A treasure, really!!!

A great clever funny book

A complex entertaining and very funny read. It was thought provoking,bringing back memories in a new refreshing and funny way. A good read.

A Life in the Dayâ

Alex is the only one in his primary school who is allowed to wear non-religious headgear. That's because he's been bald since he had his brain surgery. But that doesn't matter much to Alex, even though it could make him feel - as he calls it - "ostrichsized (which is a better word for excluded (because ostriches can't fly so they often feel left out.))" No, Alex is concentrating on getting a scholarship to a good middle school. He's also trying to figure out what's behind all the strange things that have been happening since he had his tumor removed. This is the novel "Ostrich" by Matt Greene.

This is a story that slides. What I mean by this is that what it seems to be at the beginning, turns into something else at the end. Where we think Alex's journey is taking him turns out to be towards somewhere else. And, apparently, even Alex doesn't know exactly what his story is about, until it unfolds. Some have compared this book to Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." What these two books have in common are the mysteries that need to be solved, and the fact that they are told in first person from the perspective of a young boy, both of whom feel like they are outsiders in their own ways. They're also both very intelligent with complex thought processes, and are each studying for an important exam.

This book is laugh-out-loud, hilariously funny.

Better than Pretty Little Liars and The Liar Society put together.

It will be a cruel wait for the next one to come out.
