Love Mort, Roddy, Esper, Carl and the rest of this rock and rolling space crew. Battle is never glorious

The duo of Jake Bible and Andrew B. Wehrlen once again pull off another gritty and grimy fast-paced military action science fiction story with their recent audiobook release called Mech Corps. The book follows a division of space marines who pilot large metal bipedal machines called mechs; mechanical robots. A quick glance at the books cover art give you an impression of what these contraptions look like; scary. With the population of earth needing to relocate elsewhere in the universe, military teams are send ahead to scout and claim new places for humans to survive. Invading and preparing a planet for human colonization may sound like a simple task, until our team meets an adversary who is more ruthless and powerful than anything they have previously encountered. It is a story full of action, friendship, and survival. If you enjoy space marine or military genres, you may want to have a listen to Mech Corps.

Blend together bits of Starship Troopers, a little from Alien, and some parts Old Mans War and you have a good idea of what you will find within the pages of Mech Corps. The characters and story are not extremely deep or complex, but the action and battles are unrelenting. The book is like the opening sequence to Saving Private Ryan with its multiple detailed encounters. When a book opens with a loud cry to BFI, or brace for impact, you are thrown right into the action. Once on the planet, the team is dropped right into a firefight that gets the hostility flowing. You really get a feel for the chaos and panic that envelops the characters during the heat of battle. This team of close-knit marines as to stick together to survive the onslaught of cunningness of the enemy they face. Each of the members is trained in a skill unique to them making each invaluable to one another; much like a real marine group.

There was good interaction and collaboration between the team members along with quite a few jabs, pokes, and zings that fly between the characters constantly. At times, I felt these jabs were over-the-top, but I could understand humor was used between them to help take their minds off their ultimate goal which could have led ultimately to their deaths. I have never been put in such a high-stress situation as the books characters were, so I may have reacted in a similar way to deal with the setting. All of their focus and accomplishments lead to the acceptance of the newly formed Mech Corps.

I had no issues with the quality of the audiobooks narration by Andrew B. Wehrlen. It seemed to be consistent from start to finish. I did not notice any audio artifacts such as swallowing or page turns either while I listened. I like Mr. Wehrlen deeper and rich voice for this book as it added a darker feel to the overall story. If I had one thing I would change, it would be the voicing of a few of the main female characters.

Solid start!!

10 years ago, the world was nearly decimated by a Zombie virus, but they managed to get control of it and everything went back to normal. Except now it isn't. The Zombie virus has been accidentally unleashed on an Island and a group of commandos are sent to the island to rescue some scientists that are stranded on it. But not everything is like is seems and this "easy" mission turns out to be something a lot more!!

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's action packed, fast paced and had enough twists and turns to give you whiplash! It's well written and developed and read like a great action movie. I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout and listened to this as quick as I could. The characters were all well written as well and I pretty much loved all of them. Don't get too attached though because this is a Zombie book after all, so there will be death!!

In all, this is a solid start to what looks like an amazing series. Enjoyable, entertaining and fun, all the while being a horror story too. It was like a movie playing out and I want more!!!

S W Salzman has an awesome voice for horror! He just gets when to add the tension and when to dial it back. He was clear and concise and read it well. He had a variety of tones and voices that was impressive, though his Aussie accent was a little off. It didn't detract from the story though!!

*I received a comp code for this audio book for an honest review*

Not a dull moment! This book is different in that it doesn't start right before a zombie outbreak, not during, and not immediately. It's further down the road, but while things are still being experimented with and such. There's a lot of politics and money behind the scenes. The only thing I might warn about is the harsh language and crude humor shown by some characters, which honestly made them feel more realistic.

Side note:Did anyone else picture The Smoking Man when Mr. Black was on scene the first couple of times?!

I wasn't sure about the narrator at first, being a bit different from what I've gotten used to, but I warmed up to him quickly. He did voices, accents, and he seemed to actually know the story. I've heard several that it seemed like that it was the reader's first time looking at the book, and that always puts me off. Big points for that not happening here!

Overall: If you like zombies and military action, don't mind blood and guts or an f bomb here and there, I would definitely recommend this!

Bioroids! Drunk space royalty! Crafty spymaster!

Set in a galaxy far, far away, Cassius Mass, supreme star pilot, has lost his faith in his side of the war. All his life he believed he was fighting for the right side, the Crius Archduchy. Alas, the Archduchy fell to the Commonwealth and people rejoiced (much to Cassiuss surprise). Now he spends his days drunk navigating a freight hauler, the Melampus, going by the name Marcus Grav. That is, until hes swept up into intrigue and revolution.

I know I have said this before about a new-to-me Phipps series: This is my favorite of Phippss works! Well, I say it again. This gripping scifi story is a little darker than some of his other works and yet still has moments of humor and all of it has this space opera feel going for it. I was rooting for Cassius throughout the story since I felt he would do his best to get the least number of average people killed.

Then I started rooting for Ida Claire, a spy master and captain of the Melampus who may or may not be on Cassiuss side, because she was so damn interesting! I kept picturing her with a bit of knitting as she read over the latest spy logs, quietly drinking rum-spiked tea and casually checking off boxes on the log that would determine who lived and who died. I know. She never had any knitting in the book and yet I always picture her with knitting. Maybe the knitting needle tips are poison dipped.

Lets talk about Cassiuss tangled family tree. So hes technically a clone of his father, yet he was raised as a sibling with his fathers biological offspring. so that makes them his, well, well go with siblings for now. Someone learned from that and decided to make a clone of Cassius to raise an Archduchy rebellion against the Commonwealth. Now Ida wants to stop that uprising and hunt down this clone and whoever is controlling him. Obviously, things are going to get messy for Cassius who was raised to have strong familial ties.

I loved the bioroids! Originally crafted to serve as a slave work force, sometimes a bioroid breaks free and spends the rest of their days working on some rundown freight hauler. Take Isla Hernandez, a medical officer, who is glad for her freedom but still harbors plenty of anger. The bioroids plight put me in mind of the human-like AI robots of Bladerunner and Battlestar Galactica.

Theres also aliens! Yes! Humanity knows they exist but has very little to do with them, per the aliens choice. Were not evolved enough to be of interest. Then theres the nearly alien Chel, a race of once-humans that are so far removed from humanity in purpose, biology, and technology that they are considered alien by most. Clarice has had contact with them and it wasnt pretty.

Another good novel...

I wish the author had done a proof on the audio. I love Me. Weintraub's voice , but there were so many mispronunciations it detracted from the content. Psion- the P is silent. Behemoth- accent is on 2nd syllable... and many others.

Loved it except...

Another great story in a wonderful universe, but I cringed every time I heard the "puh-sion", and in this universe that makes for a lot of cringes. Still, very worth the listen.

1920s War Lords take it to Mars

Starting in 1898 with the final throws of the Martian invasion, humanity is at a breaking point. However, the human bacteria prove deadly to the Martians and on mass, they die, leaving their advanced technology for the humans to scavenge. Skipping ahead to 1924, the world leaders have decided its time to take the fight to Mars and a massive invasion is launched.

Im a fan of HG Wellss works, including the original War of the Worlds. So of course I was thrilled to dive into a novel that told a story of what humans did afterwards. How does a failed Martian invasion change the course of humanitys history? Gardner and Rust give a decent answer to that question.

I think this book would have extra interest to those who have studied WWI. Theres plenty of European and North American names to recognize in this novel such as Charles de Gaulle, Rommel, George Patton, and so on. You dont have to be particularly knowledgeable about any of these historical figures to enjoy their characters in this tale. I was a bit surprised that the Asian countries werent represented at all. Also, since it was a world wide Martian invasion in 1898, I was initially hopeful to see how that great leap in tech affected many of the countries in Africa and South America. Alas, those continents are barely mentioned.

Theres plenty of great tech in this tale. First, I really enjoyed that some tested and true war machines of WWI were in this book, like the Fokker airplanes. Theres also some brand new vehicles made especially for the Martian invasion. However, I did notice that the physics of Mars was skimmed over when it came to actual battles.

Now, let me get out my little polished soap box. There is exactly 1 female character (Nurse Hill) in this entire book and she doesnt appear until the last hour of the story and she isnt plot relevant at all. Theres a few other ladies mentioned as wives or mothers. This pains me. Here we are in this fascinating science fiction novel thats essentially about the survival of the species, and the women arent present. Sigh

OK, so moving on. I loved that we got a look into Martian society through the Martian characters.

Futuristic Fun

This book was an excellent science fiction-action-adventure tale with plenty of humor mixed throughout. Basically, in the year 2064, violent crimes no longer exist (at least in civilized society). This is thanks to Timecasters, cops who can use a sort of time travel device to catch criminals basically 100% of the time. It's enough to stop anyone from even bothering to commit a crime, leading to a practical Utopia. But something has gone wrong. One of the few remaining Timecasters, Talon has been framed using the technology, even though that's impossible. Even though he watches himself commit the murder using his timecasting equipment, he knows he didn't do it. This leads him on a quest to clear his name and catch the real killer. And to amp things up, he's also shown to have blown up Boise, Idaho, killing a half-million people. You better believe he now has to dodge every authority figure in the country while doing so. This one is filled with graphic violence and sex, so it's not for the faint of heart, but the action and humor throughout definitely make this a worthwhile ride. Give it a shot.

Futuristic Fun!

Talon, a peace officer, is approached by Neil, who wants a wellness check for his Aunt Zelda. Sadly, Aunt Zelda is dead, stuffed in her refrigerator. (NOTE: READ THE GLOSSARY!!!) Talon uses a gadget (glossary, remember?) to see who killed her. Imagine his horror when he realizes it was HIM! He knows that isnât right, he was home with his wife.

Knowing the entire Chicago peace department (no more police because of aforesaid gadget) will be looking for him, he enlists the help of his friend Harry McGlade to find the real killer.

In the meantime, he blows up Boise. Well, no, he doesnât.

This is a fast, fun read. Full of sly humor and outright laughs, the adventures of Talon while clearing his name is different in so many ways than any other Konrath book. READ THE GLOSSARY. Not suitable for kids.

Fast, fun, funny

Talon Avalon is about to get a cure for his boredom. In the future, nearly all violent crime has been erased thanks to the ability to see into the past and catch any criminals in the act. The people who use this technology are called Timcasters. Talon is one of very few left and, since people stop committing crimes before they're even committed, his life has been reduced to giving lectures to school children.
