I liked this one more than first book
As a short story, the author managed to keep and hold my interest through the entire story. Never slow or devoid of forward movement, this is a nice addition to the Riverworld universe.

This is a very clever book.
Humanity has discovered how to travel at FT2L, the double ofFTL, Faster than Light Speed. There is just a problem: organic matter will notsurvive traveling at this speed, so ships able to travel at FT2L will just transport semi-intelligent central units (named factories) able to construct robots in order to mine far away planets and collect precious inorganic materials. Just before the take off of six of these vessels, a hacker gets into the system and leaves a virus by accident, making those six ships to aim for the same planet, and switching the robot plans for toy blueprints from a toy factory. Four ships make it to the planet and start production successfully, but as one of the goals is gaining complete control of the planet, they will start fighting each other to gain supremacy.
The experiments of one of the factories on Teddy 1499 will make him become sentient, and with time he will realize that they are just fighting other factories and that the only way to reach their goals will be to find peace and unite. This is the journey of Teddy 1499 on this new world, fighting for something nobody believes in.
This is a very clever book. The name sounds almost cute, but there is nothing cute about this book. I would consider it hard sci-fi, and a kind of experiment mixing some out of the normal elements. Two meter teddy bears with guns, big elephant dolls, nurse nuns patching the fallen in battle. This is the normal world for Teddy 1499, who starts questioning how things work and experiments thinking 'outside the box'. This story is one of those that could have been born after a 'what if'.
I enjoyed the experiment but it took a long time to take off. I think TomGondolfi spent too much time with the exposure. It is not that it did not have useful information. It had, but I found it a bit distracting, and I was impatient to start the story.
I enjoyed the evolution of Teddy 1499, and how he was also amazed by it. We travel a long journey with him and it is impossible to not feel something for him. In a way, it is an endearing story.
John Hough's narration was clear but I found it a bit too theatrical at times. It could have been appropriate, since he was giving voice to toys, but I think I would have preferred a more neutral narration. It was very good though, and the production had a high quality.
This book is not for everybody, not even for every science fiction lover, but I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys hard sci-fi and would like something different.

At the same time, he is challenged by his doctors and psychiatrist to see if he can defeat his alcohol addiction and to combat his PTSD too.
Also on the ship is the Barony Secure labs, where the research teams are trying to find the Ikarian virus vaccine to give longevity to the RIM - and the Baroness is interested in their success.
While the Caliphate continues to try to find a way to steal the vaccine, they end up using a vacjumper - someone who can go right out into outer space with no suit and attempt to break into the lab that way.
Called on to forget about his illness, Tanner must rise to heed the call to defeat the vacjumper and to do that he must jump out into space on his own. Death, virus vaccines, and love all play a part for him and his quest.

Can Cpt Scott Save the Enkian Virus?
What did you love best about Hospital Ship?
This was finally a chance to see what makes Tanner Scott tick, and more to the point, see if they can get rid of his addiction to Scotch, and make him the Captain that he is meant to be. Scott is easily one of the best characters (and the Main Character!!) of the series, so this was a brilliant start to the book. Add to that, there are multiple sub-plots also occurring simultaneously with the RIM and onboard the hospital ship, you can see why it is such a good book.
There is also a lot more of Lady St August in this book than in previous books, and that also makes this a stand out.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hospital Ship?
The dinner between Captain Scott and Lady St August had to be one of the memorable moments of Hospital ship, but no more is going to be said for spoilers.
    Which scene was your favorite?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    A Burnt Out Captain,
    Assassins and Infiltrators everywhere,
    The greatest prize in history,
    Any additional comments?
Rudnick writes so well as he combines the Military, Royalty and Political situations into a story as well as the personalities of a few key characters to tell an interesting and engaging story. This is Military Sci-Fi as it should be, interesting, detailed, exciting, fun, with some really fast paced and well described combat scenes, as well as brilliant dialogue and intrigue across sectors of space. Exceptional effort

    Publisher's Summary:
Following an accident that almost cost him his life, Howard Falcon was not so much saved as he was converted, through the use of prosthetics, into something faster, stronger and smarter...but also slightly less human and more machine than he was. And with this change came an opportunity - that of piloting a mission into Jupiter's atmosphere and ultimately of making first contact with the life forms he discovers there.
Picking up the threads of humanity versus artificial intelligence and machines, and of encounters with the alien, this collaborative novel between two superb writers is a sequel to Howard Falcon's adventures.
A proper science fiction adventure, this is perfect for fans of Golden Age SF as well as the modern SF listener.
    Read by Peter Kenny.

    Dull and Plodding
I can't find anything good to say about this. I'm a great Reynolds fan and have read or listened to all of his other work, so I listened to this in a state of disbelief. To continue Clarke's story with a 50 year old view of what technology might be like on the future is puzzling, as it fails to take into account the technology that we take for granted now. OK, this may be an alternative reality, but it is an extraordinarily tedious one.
I know that Peter Kenny is not everyone's cup of tea, but I am quite a fan of his - normally. But on this occasion his breathless delivery is reminiscent of Nicholas Parsons much parodied introduction to Just A Minute. (Apologies to non-British readers who won't have any idea of who Nicholas Parsons is.)
I am very disappointed with this book, it fails on every level: 2 dimensional characters, sleep inducing pace, poor delivery and a tired plot development that makes it impossible to suspend disbelief.
The only reason I gave this 2 stars rather than 1 is because of my respect for Clarke, Reynolds and Kenny.
    Tedious, goes nowhere very slowly
Oh dear, during chaper 9 I gave up for the last time; the story didn't grip or appeal and i lost the will to keep on listening.
    This was no chasm City
I felt the characters were very two-dimensional not a typical Alastair Reynolds book I don't know about Stephen Baxter as I've never read any of his books before.
The plot was very predictable, it only really got good in the last few chapters. The best thing about this audiobook was Peter Kenny who did superb performance as usual.
    Reflective AI story.
Held my interest to the end, good twists and turns. Well worth listening to with believable characters. A bit rushed around some areas and characters.
    Engaging
Fascinating read with plenty of fresh sci topics to grab my interest. Look forward to more from these authors.

    Publisher's Summary:
The world we live in now is one where you have to fight or die. There are no exceptions. Sometimes, fighting against the people who want to take what you have is harder than dealing with the walkers.
The world may never be the same again. I'm thinking it won't. How could it be? We have lost 75 percent or more of the human population. Since there are no communications, that number doesn't even include the whole world. No one knows how it is in other countries. We have always said the government was incompetent, well, they finally proved it with the zombie outbreak.
The toxoplasmosis epidemic hit around the same time as the flu vaccine season got started. Although live vaccines don't cause disease in the people who get them because they are made with weakened viruses and bacteria, there is always a concern that someone with a severely weakened immune system could get sick after getting a live vaccine. That is why live vaccines are not given to people who have a weakened immune system.
People who were infected with the toxoplasmosis parasite displayed symptoms of the influenza virus. So almost everyone thought we had a flu epidemic going around. People getting the flu vaccine already had a weakened immune system, thus pushing them further into sickness with the live flu vaccine. This somehow sent the toxoplasmosis parasite into overdrive and caused it to wreak havoc.

    Lots of snark.
You will really love Tracy's solutions to issues and her threats. Tracy really cares about her family and this is her motivation during the books.
I became connected to her during the first 19 chapters that during chapter 20 on the audiobook I continued to listen to the story. Problem was during a conversation with multiple characters "Becky says", "Tracy says" ect. The narator's voice also makes this more noticeable. The narator also talks rapidly and I had to check the speed I had audible set on.
When this set of three books were over I could not wait to go to #4.
    Good Story
If you could sum up Southern Zombies Three Book Box Set in three words, what would they be?
    family, action, humor
What other book might you compare Southern Zombies Three Book Box Set to and why?
That's hard to say. There aren't many books related to the zombie apocalypse and family. There also aren't many books that have mostly female characters in the lead. All of the characters are family members and have the usual family spats, sarcastic comments and humor but also come together when they are in dire situations. Overall, the story relates to how a family would interact and relate to each other in an unusual situation and how they take care of each other in those situations.
What about Mandy Mahans performance did you like?
She could have used more inflection and not ended most sentences with a question.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Southern family values.
    Any additional comments?
I would read and listen to this series.

    Members Reviews:
    What an unexpectedly amazing story.
Arena by Holly Jennings is the first book in a series called Arena. Kali Ling is a professional gamer in the Virtual Gaming League in 2054, akin to a professional sports league in 2017. As a part of an elite team fighting in the famous RAGE tournaments with realistic fighting that ends in real pain perception in the virtual world, the pressure is high. Not only do the gamers need to remain in top physical shape as their own physique is translated to their game personas, their fame requires them to constantly be on view for the paparazzi, including photo shoots and constant appearance at clubs. Kali is the first female captain of a team and she must manage her team, traumatic changes in the teams lineup, difficult team members, and also learn to manage the rising tensions in her life before she completely breaks down.
What an unexpectedly amazing story. I am not a gamer or a sports-lover, but the Jennings has really combined the two and the pressure of fame into a really unique world that may not be too far in the future. This is a novel that is filled with real-life problems of varying degree: loss, drug addiction, pressures of fame, lack of diversity, and more. While all of the characters are not fleshed out to a degree that I would prefer, it can be forgiven in this first novel because of the sharpness of the world that Jennings has created. There is the gaming league that manages the tournaments and they are focused on ratings and money coming in. Similarly, the team owners are also focused on the money that the team can make through sponsorships, leaving the players on their own. At its core, this is a story about fighting against the status quo when its clear that the status quo is not good for people, in this case, the gamers, and this plays out in some really powerful moments. I also loved the diversity of the characters. Kali Ling is half Chinese and is the first female captain of a team. Hopefully, in the next novels, the other characters get their backstories fleshed out a bit more. The gaming aspect was more limited than what I was expecting, but it doesn't feel forced, which is good.
The narration was Erin Spencer was really well done. She really captured the characters, especially Kali. Unfortunately, the production quality was not ideal. There are a few skips and really fast speed through for less than a second.

    Chuckle-worthy Military SF
To say that this book didn't get go where I was expecting at all would be an understatement. Okay, that's not exactly true. As far as space-faring mercenary stories go, this one did follow the basic formula. However, based on the synopsis, I expected a more serious tone than what the story actually gave me. This was largely a humorous story that brimmed with action and a little intrigue. Joe was a funny, endearing character, and it was an excellent decision to tell this story from his POV as it makes it very easy to connect with Joe. Narrating Joe's story is Andrew B. Wehrlen, and he was a great choice for this book. He does an admirable job of capturing the humor of the story and Joe's personality. He managed to find distinctive voices for most of the characters, and I thought he did a fair job on the female voices which can be a little hit or miss with me where male narrators are concerned.
The supporting cast of characters aren't as fleshed out as Joe aside from maybe Joe's partner who is described as a mix between an armored beetle and a Great Dane and tends to spout random facts. Regardless, Bible introduces us to many new races in this story, and while we learn a little about some of their physical characteristics, we don't learn much about them beyond that. Given that this book is supposed to be a fast-paced military merc story, I don't think these characters suffer from not being explored as the action is the driving force behind this book, and it doesn't fail to entertain.
There are a few portions of the story that left me a little foggy. One very big instance is when a story that is being told to Joe, but readers are never actually told the story. It's skimmed over, and all I know is that it involves a questionable death. Beyond that, there's no revelation or consideration for the reader even though it leaves Joe speechless. Then, there's the ending. I have mixed feelings about it. It sort of dived over into the science-fantasy genre for a bit there, which I love, but I don't know if that was exactly the best ending for a book of this nature. It felt too whimsical, a little too overpowered for this, even with the considerations made for the story.
I enjoy military science fiction, but I don't get to read it as much as I'd like. This definitely appealed to that part of me that enjoys stories in this setting. This sets up an interesting universe for a series (I'm assuming this will be a series), but works well as standalone book.

    Superfluous and Unbalanced
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, the book seems to force as much as scientific words as it can in a sentence. Never in my life have I heard so much science jargon in a book that just makes it seemingly unnatural and annoying. The narrator also could use some work: I understand the need for inflection of tone and volume, but the audio is very improperly mixed in this one. There will be moments when the narrator's voice suddenly goes strikingly loud, like nails on a chalkboard. I could not finish the audiobook and don't intend to.
