New narrator

This one had a new narrator, although not bad, the change of voice and pronunciation slightly distracted me from the story.

Why did they change narrators?

It's a good series but why do they change narrators on series all the time. They wait until they are 4 or 5 books into a series and change the narrator. They did this in The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey too but got so much negative feed back they switched back. It's not a good idea to do that on any series after the first 2 books because by that time us listeners are use to voices being done in a certain way.

Less sexism, also if the Author stopped endlessly repeating himself that would be good too. A good general plot ruined by poor dialogue and unnecessary over explanations of thing that would be obvious to all but the authors most dim witted readers.

What could Raymond L. Weil have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Have a more enlightened attitude towards women. These are meant to be elite Earth space marines yet he writes the women as flighty, insecure, delicate flowers in need of a mans protection with nothing on their brains but men and babies.

What aspect of Liam Owens performance would you have changed?

The sound of his voice.

Wonderful

I've read and listened to every book in this series and never been disappointed in content or story. Line

Entertaining but a very abrupt ending

I'm a big fan of the series but this particular edition, while entertaining is abrupt. There is no clear climax and it seems to be just additional information for the rest of the series. I loved the narration.

Average all around

It took me awhile to finally get into this book. I originally only had the ebook but then bought the audiobook in hopes of getting through it. It did help and I started to enjoy it. In terms of characters, I was really sad that the only two females were both annoying to me. The pacing feels alright but as we see at the end, the adventures are far from over. The narration was alright, nothing good but nothing bad. Wish the voices had been more unique and consistent but at least it helped me through the book.

Total waste of time

There's so much fluff in this book, it's ridiculous. If you got rid of all the times the aliens repeat that every other races are vermin and will be destroyed, and all the times the human's think "oh no, how will we ever survive", the book would end up being about 4 hours of actual content. And with the narrator's fast reading, you'd actually get about 3 hours of audio.

I'm sure the only reason this series is still being published is because the author is also the producer. Don't waste your time or money on this book.

Fast narrator

The narrator was too fast for my enjoyment. The editing is not good. Multiple sentences are repeated throughout the series.

Not really what I expected

Following up two awesome books this book seen a little rushed. Action was not as intense, characters seemed a little lacking. I will give book 4 a chance hopefully I comeback around

Love this series!!!

Another great book by Raymond Weil! I can't wait for the next. My only complaint is that there is a few parts where the narrator repeats the line he just said, it happened in the first two books as well. I'll be waiting as patiently as I can for book 4!!!

Weakest of the triptych

While still entertaining, I consider this to be the weakest in the series. One thing it does properly is concluding many stories that started from part one (The End is Nigh). Whether the ending is satisfactory is a different matter. Some new stories (the Disneyland one stands out here) are really beautifully written. But unfortunately, this volume is a continuation and conclusion of the triptych, and cannot stand on its own.

Bit of a let down.

The quality of the stories was more mixed than previous installments. Some conclusions were solid but others seemed not up to par with the setups. But more were the performances. This seemed more of a beta release, fewer performers and thus less distinction among tales, with some that kept the same person one to the next. Also, no extra info such as author info. All led to a rushed feel, a "who do we have handy to record?" feel to get this out now!

Most of the returning authors finish their triptychs with engaging flair, while newcomers deliver some great post-apocalyptic stories. Marathoning all three books, back-to-back, might not be recommended. Inundation of depressing themes and zombies (maybe too many derivative zombie centric narratives) could wear on some readers.

A wonderfully inventive science fiction adventure

This was a wonderfully inventive science fiction adventure, spanning across time and space. The characters and locales were fresh and creative. The narrator did an excellent job portraying the various characters.

Pleasantly surprising

Was kinda hard to get attached at first, but quick grew to become enthralled with the story enjoying how the story unraveled itself to me.

What's a time traveling doggo?

A big ol' dimension jumping pupper!

Summerhill uses the same story mechanics as Dr Who or Rick and Morty, but in its own way. You will be transported to many magical places in your mind as you listen. It's a great book, highly recommend.

Summerhill is a science fiction novel that it quite the mind teaser. It always makes you actively looking for answeres and stuff. If you're into a long fantasy adventure this is it

Astounding

I can't believe how engaged I was with this story! I got through it in 2 days, faster than any other audio book, and can't wait to listen again, something I've never wanted with any other book, traditional or otherwise.

I can't tell if I want a sequel or if it's perfectly self-contained, but I know I love it.

Compelling Concepts

This was the first R.C. Wilson novel I have read. I have a particular love of social science fiction of all types. The Affinities has a nice meaty premise; social personality matching taken to the extreme. It's a competently written book - not at all literary, style-wise, but good.

The overall structure of the plot was solid and goes along at a pretty fast clip, but I found the character development a little lacking. Especially when it came to antagonistic characters. They felt very cardboardish to me.

I'm also one of the few people who is not a massive Scott Brick fan. I find him over-dramatically emotive in his readings.

But if you like this narrator, and enjoy a clever, fast-paced alternative fiction thriller, I think this might hit the spot.

Originality: What Makes RCW's Works Stand Apart.

I loved this book. It's quite a trick to write something that is

1) Populated with characters who feel real, that we can connect to

2) Actually says something; make you think

3) Is genuinely original

The way 1 & 3 are artfully combined is what I think makes Wilson's books so enjoyable. Often originality is synonymous with 'weird' and hard to relate to. Not so The Affinities. The concepts of the novel are borne of a substrate made up of solid characters; indeed you could almost lose the science fiction aspect and still have a pretty decent book.

I agree with some other reviewers who have said that The Affinities could've been a bit longer. That's true, but the "fill in your own blanks" feeling one may be left with at book's end is I think even better. The reader is forced to think; in my case, not so much along the lines of "what happened next?" No, nothing like that.
