Title: Thrown Away Omnibus 1 (Parts 1-4)

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-10-15

    Publisher's Summary:
This isn't a young adult dystopian tale. It's not romance. It's not cuddly.
No one knows how the world died.
They only know that it happened centuries ago.
Among the remnants of mankind - the people that live and die scavenging in the ruins - it is thought that the strangers who live behind the barrier, inside their protected city, may still hold that secret.
But no one taken by the hunters from the city ever comes back.
For Jack Avery, living among the ruins of the outer zone and scavenging to survive is not the worst of nightmares. Something haunts him far more than any hunter patrol. In one short moment, two years before, something happened that changed him. This story is about his journey through the apocalypse, but also through his own regrets and doubts.
    Are there second chances?
Can Jack find the answer to his torment among the shattered ruins of the past?
    Members Reviews:
a post-apocalptic world with so many clues
In a post-apocaliptic and hopeless Earth, Jack meets Ryan, a six year old child, and this fact will change his life and the way he will relate to others and the world. People from the outside world live among the junk and are hunted by troopers who take them away in trucks. None of the people taken has ever come back, and nobody knows where they go and what happens to them. The boy is taken one day and, after some time, Jack decides to go and try to find him.
The premises of this story were so good, a post-apocalptic world with so many clues to find out, but the story and characters were as lifeless as an empty shell. It is very slowly paced because the main story is very often interrupted by flashbacks. In most occasions these flashback parts are longer than the main story ones, which gives a boring rhythm to the book. These flashbacks should have helped to give some depth to the characters and show how important Jack and Ryan's relationship was, but it failed at it, keeping the characters flat and their relationship as something almost casual. With what we got it is difficult to understand Jack's motivations. The end is quite predictable and you see it coming from far, which feels quite anticlimactic.
Josiah John Bildner just used two voices, a neutral one, used for the narration and most of the characters (including women), and a rougher one, for some of the male characters. Sound effects were used when voices came out of loudspeakers, but even like that, they all sounded the same. There were important changes of volume when a sound effect or a different voice was used, and I also observed long silences between the end of a chapter and the beginning of the next.
The concept of this book was very good and succeeds at awakening the curiosity in the reader, but it fails to deliver what we need to know and recreates in meaningless details from the past. I would have appreciated a deeper exploration of the characters but done in a subtler way with shorter flashes from the past. There are still many unanswered questions that would make for another good volume, but the things exposed in this story, along with the characters, feel somehow incomplete.
This post apocalyptic world was a very good conception but it sadly failed at the execution.

    Title: Going Dark
    Subtitle: The Red Trilogy 3
    Author: Linda Nagata
    Narrator: Kevin T. Collins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-10-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 64 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In the third book in The Red Trilogy, former army lieutenant James Shelley becomes a black ops sniper working for the Red - a suspected rogue artificial intelligence that is ripped from today's headlines.
James Shelley has left his lover, Delphi, and his companion-in-arms, Jayne Vasquez, with a fortune acquired from a fallen oligarch. They believe him to be dead, and he doesn't try to set the record straight. His long-running question has been answered: There are other soldiers like him who have served the purposes of the Red - and he has accepted his place among them.
As a soldier of the Red he pursues covert missions designed to nudge history away from existential threats - but that doesn't mean the world is growing more orderly. It's only in the froth of a managed chaos that human potential can grow and thrive. Shelley's missions eventually take him into orbit and into conflict with those he loves - Delphi and Jaynie, who are determined to escape the influence of the Red.

    explosive action sequences, solid world-building..
Going Dark, the finale in Linda Nagatas terrific military science fiction trilogy, The Red, returns Lt. James Shelley to the front lines of a war dominated by artificial intelligence. Presumed dead following his low-Earth orbit exploits at the close of The Trials, Shelley has been serving as a squad member in the secret Existential Threat Management team, a group of soldiers whose deaths have been faked by The Red AI and who carry out missions on the intelligences behalf. After a look-and-see mission in the Arctic puts the worlds superpowers on the edge of all-out warfare, the ETMs cover is blown by a traitor and Shelley and his team find themselves once again serving the US on a series of risky missions related to the competing ideologies of various rogue AIs that may be off-shoots of The Red.
As exhibited in the previous two novels, Nagata has a strong knack for creating deeply layered plots and dense narratives. The various scenarios she puts Shelley and company through are intriguing and paint a highly interesting view of the world as seen through the eyes and minds of these soldiers, a world that is constantly being manipulated by the overarching, and far-reaching, influences of an unstoppable and uncontrollable artificial intelligence.
In this final chapter, Nagata adds a few new wrinkles and subplots, enough so that I hope and wish for more novels in this series despite it being billed as a trilogy. Over the last two books, weve gotten hints of a bigger scope to the world as humanity slowly takes to the stars. Here we get a brief mention of Mars preppers looking to make it off-world, but the narrative remains strictly Earthbound. Frankly, Id love to see Nagata take on outer space at some point. Going Dark, though, does serve a fitting finale to the story of James Shelley, even if a lot of the larger concepts surrounding him go unresolved. With The Red, Nagata has created an overwhelming game-changer, an uncontainable genie that is not easily put back in the bottle. As with the prior installments, though, the focus is strictly on the human element and the ways in which characters respond to the evolving world around them.

    Publisher's Summary:
You can't militarize space. This one rule has led to decades of peaceful development of space programs worldwide. However, increasing resource scarcity and a changing climate on Earth's surface is causing some interested parties - namely India, the North American Union, and the Sinese Federation - to militarize. The discovery of a strange artifact by Dr. Alayna Wong precipitates a crisis. What appears to be a hitherto undiscovered comet is soon revealed to be an alien structure on a cometary trajectory toward the sun. Now there is a race between countries to see who can study and control the artifact, dubbed the "Solar Express", before it perhaps destroys itself.
Leading the way for the North American Union is Alayna's friend, Captain Christopher Tavoian, one of the first shuttle pilots to be trained for combat in space. But as the alien craft gets closer to its destination, it begins to alter the surface of the sun in strange new ways - ways that could lead Alayna to revolutionary discoveries, provided that Chris can prevent war from breaking out as he navigates among the escalating tensions between nations.

You've got mail in the 21st century.
Page turning diolg written with subconscious interjection. Geopolitical action with interpersonal relationships weave though a ten thousand years old space relic misery. Many questions are answered but each answer leads to more questions. A couple starts a long distance relationship as tragedies take personal toll around them they help each other while being unable to help themselves.
    Too long, good finale
The storyline is clean, the idea is good (not new but some original perks). The book includes many side details which make it too long to my taste, and at some points lacking action and even boring. Strong finale, which if fact could be more detailed.
I Really Enjoyed This -- Far More Than Expected
I liked "The Martian" (the Audible version more than the movie) because it was near future, pro-science and well-reasoned. This is all of those. A little more hard-science, just as much a sense of using reason and getting things done. There is a more political/personal backstory, but in the end it is another science fiction-procedural. It just adds a more military component as well (which is OK by me.) It is a long story, starting a bit slowly. But the narration is better than average and it moves at an ever-increasing pace to an engaging end. (Is it my imagination or is there a growing re-birth of throwbacks to earlier, more basic sci-fi themes updated for our time and science?) I expected three stars, thought it was four most of the way through the middle -- and ended at 4.5. But it had a lot of heart do I gave it 5.
    Worthwhile listen
A slow-paced novel, with lots of science, politics and a touch of romance. I liked it's mature tone and the plotbearing letter exchange. In sum, a different yet rewarding read.
    dry, repetitive.
would not recommend. this was a short story that got made into a longer than needed book, from a completely predicable ending to listening to the words "multi fractal mini granulations". ugh! i think that phrase was repeated at least a few dozen times over the course of the book.

    Just ok
After reading this book, I can honestly say that I prefer Sawyers later works they are terrific!
This book was ok, I dont have much to criticize I just didnt love it.
    Absolutely terrible narration
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Robert. J. Sawyer is my favorite science fiction writer in current years. I read all of his books. This was apparently one of his earlier works and one has to make allowances for that, but his later works show how far he has risen in the ranks of the genre.
What other book might you compare Golden Fleece to and why?
I guess the closest book I can compare it to would be "2001: A Space Odessey" because of the premise that a computer has taken over control of the ship.
How could the performance have been better?
Change the narrator. This is the first book I have listened to narrated by Steven Menasche and I must say that it was a very uncomfortable experience. He narrates with a certain accent and all of the character voices sound the same. It added confusion to a complicated plot and many times I was list as to who was speaking.
Do you think Golden Fleece needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It definitely could be followed up with many stories, since with book the long journey is just beginning.
    Any additional comments?
Robert. J. Sawyer does not disappoint.
    There's Better Sawyer out there
This is a much lesser Sawyer work... The story is kinda average, and none of the characters are what I'd call likeable... It's not a horrible book, but definitely on the mediocre side of good... Some of the ideas are intriguing, but aren't fleshed out very well... The Closterphobia of isolation, both on the ship, and within the AI is interesting... Some of themedical science and neural mapping is pretty cool... A bit of the ghost in the machine going on throughout, both literally and figuratively... I thought it was humorous that the MMPI is still being used so far in the future w/ so much more learning and tech to draw upon... Much of the dialogue is melodramatic, both from the humans and AI... The narration is pretty poor... It works, for the most part for the AI, but w/ the people comes across as whiny and shrill when going from voice to voice, especially female voices... I can appreciate the uber intelligent AI being judgmental and self involved, but it was a bit overdone... The underlying mystery wasn't complicated, and never really got the deductive juices flowing... Most will see the final reveal coming a mile away... I'd think twice before spending a credit, much less full purchase price... Wait for a sale and you won't be as disappointed...
    Definitely early Sawyer
Except for the WWW series and Red Planet Blues, Golden Fleece was the last of Sawyer's novels I hadn't read.
It's clear that this was written early in his career.

    I may be a fangirl
The Darkover series was my introduction to scifi/fantasy for older audiences, and I was thrilled to see that some of the books had made it onto audible. Rediscovery is a later book in the series, but it is written in such a way that you do not need to have foreknowledge. The narration is spot on, and helps to bring Darkover to life.
    enjoyed it
good performance of a book I read many years ago. I enjoyed listening to it. I'd like more performance by this reader.

    Unexpected and tons of fun
I bought this audiobook because I'd listened to an interview with the author in which she mentioned that this book had space whales and, well, I'm not about to pass that up.
The book was weirder than I'd expected, theatrical in tone and post modern in theme, the story is told through transcripts and radio announcements, interviews and gossip columns. It constantly and consciously shifts in tone, from a noir detective story to gothic horror and more, as characters argue over what, exactly, the story is. All of this makes sense of course, since they're all movie folks and a woman has disappeared without a trace.
All of this can make the audiobook hard to follow at times, but the narrator is really good, with a fittingly theatrical, smooth voice and, when he switches up tone to suit a genre, there's an entirely new level of humor that I don't think you'd get from reading the book.
So, recommended! Just focus on the space whales and you should be fine!
    A Failed Illusion
I'm going to have to give this review in three parts because, whatever else this book is, it is full of extremes.
The first thing I will mention is the writing. The author does a great, one might even say beautifully lush job, of describing the world and sensations the characters experience in it. The language is a delight to the senses and a clever joy to the mind.
The second part is the narrator. I'm not sure how, but they managed to find the perfect narrator for this one. I believe he could read recipes from a cookbook and make them sound intensely interesting. Pairing this narrator with a narrative that is so gorgeously sensual is a master stroke.
The third part is the story, which is separate from the writing. Unlike the writing, which dances through your mind with an almost hypnotic grace, the story was ripped into shreds and scattered about in order to hide its flaws. Let's disguise fiction as reality, throw in some opium generated sequences, combine them with a huge helping of Dues ex Machina and see if we can misdirect the readers attention away from the fact that the core story was likely written by a child on a sugar high. It isn't simply the fact it lacks any attempt at cohesion or even the fact it actively changes the story as you listen, yet one cannot ignore that even the author in attempt to finally come up with an ending that, in some vague fashion, has a prayer of making sense, throws up her hands and literally has cartoon characters explain things to the reader. The explanation is simplistic and made as if to children, which is about complexity of the entire drug induced hallucination.
At the end if the day I would say if you delight in language and the complex joys one can derive from it, then get this one.

    Good story, bad enemies
This book spend a lot of time with the 'bad guys' who are so flat and predictable. To the point where I found it really a struggle to keep reading. But the other points of view were great. And the amount of work the author put into describing the alien flora and fauna was incredible.
    Quite good for modern Sci-fi.
Still a little too much of the military component to get 5 stars. Has a more of the thinking component than most military Sci-fi. The first book was the best. If I had not finished the series, I would have given the first one 5 stars. Conflicts yes, but fewer pitched extended battles.
    Another ripping good yarn
Charles E Gannon continues to build a fun and engaging story with a wonderful mix of square-jawed action in an interesting science fiction story. The aliens are very different cultures and he crafts them well.
    NEW IDEAS
    We are Waiting!
    Narrator is waiting!
    Caine is waiting!
Mr Gannon sleeping, eating, and drinking are excuses get to writing
    Great third book
This third book is a great continuation story that seemlessly flowed from the prior story right into the action. Caine (along with Ambassador Gassbard) are put in charge of a legation to visit the Slaasriithi homeworld. On the way, their plans are interrupted by the K'tor. This book spends a large amount of time delving into the culture and history of both the Slassriithi and the K'tor. Things that were hinted at in previous books begin to make more sense, but yet more mysteries and questions about their origins are raised.
Caine continues to present super human skills in navigating diplomacy, war, and alien races. It is always a pleasure to see what is happening inside his head and how he reacts to every situation. He really is the star of this novel, along with Gassbard and the Slassriithi represneative. There were also a few minor characters that were quite intriguing and fun. However, most of Caine's crew are somewhat forgettable and generic, though their team work was not.
I would say at times some passages could become a tad too long...especially the K'Tor parts. Also, some minor profanity here that could make it less of a YA-appropriate listen.
Overall this was a great third book and continued the story very well, into a majorly enjoyable listen. The narrator continues to do a fine job and never misses a beat.
NOTE: I received this for free in exchange for an honest review.
