There are few writers who can write a good story with a gay character, primarily because they focus on raw sex rather than the story. A gay character does not need to be a porn star and in fact rarely are as stereotypical as most characters in this genre. This seems to be more typical of American writers, as I have read much more quality material from Brits. This was an exception.

More angsty than the first story, but it does have a good ending

Rating: 8/10

PROS:

- This story is a nice progression from the one before it (Bound by Deception). The characters' personalities are consistent between stories but have evolved as a result of their relationship, and Oliver and Vincent struggle with the sorts of problems I would expect to have arisen in the past 6 months since they first got together.

- Oliver's situation is quite sad. He's in love with a man (a hanging offense), he's almost destitute (for a gentleman, anyway), he's the son of a man with a terrible reputation for excessive gambling, and Vincent treats him with very little emotional affection the majority of the time. Yet he doesn't allow himself to wallow in self-pity, and I like that about him.

- The sex scenes are hot, with a touch of BDSM. It's interesting reading about sex toys from 1830s England. I don't have any idea whether they're realistic or not, but I'm sure the author did some research before including them.

- I liked the ending quite a bit. It mentions the *possibility* of unhappiness in the future, but given the time frame of the story, it's as happy as it can realistically be.

CONS:

- Much of the story is sad in a hopeless, "I'll never have what I want from life" sort of way. (Once again, though, happy ending...)

- I got super annoyed with Vincent's treatment of Oliver and with the fact that Oliver puts up with it for so long. Vincent treats Oliver basically like a prostitute for the majority of the story: he uses Oliver for sex and then leaves so he can get back to his uber-important, aristocratic life. He insults Oliver over and over again, and Oliver is so whipped that he simply takes it.

Boring. Gave up during chapter 3. Cliched and uninteresting story. The narrator's voice for the main character was irritating.

Donovan needs to feel safe and finds an opportunity to try to move on. Tony is also smart enough to take an opportunity when found. Of course after that both need to learn about really being open and telling the whole truth.

I really enjoyed the first part of the story, there was even humor in it, and I found myself laughing at some parts.

From there, it kind of lost luster. like the story was forced.

I really like Derrick McClain and his narrations, so when this came up for review I was psyched! It looked sweet and funny and who doesnt like a friends to lovers story?

I was LOVING this for the first 55% of the book. We start off with a smart-mouthed and super confident Ryan who ends up saving the very nerdy Brandon in high school and the two become BFFs. Sure, Ryan secretly wishes Brandon was gay, and sure, Brandon is secretly gay, but these guys are young.

Off they go to college and in the way of all new adults everywhere, Brandon finally sees the light and admits hes gay and he and Ryan begin a relationship that is physical as well as emotional.

Like I said the first half of the story is just this high school and college. The two finding each other as friends then more.

But wait! At the 55 % mark Ryan gives Brandon a RIDICULOUSLY HURTFUL ultimatum where he demands that the newly admitting to being gay Brandon OUT himself or the two cant be together. So, in a fit of insecurity, Brandon does, but not before Ryan decides hes been stood up and CHEATS on Brandon. ONE NIGHT! OMG. Poor Brandon gets beat up and then 12 years pass! some seriously messed up stuff happens that makes me almost stop listening. I was SO MAD!

However, I wanted to see what happened. Well. I wish Id just stopped.

Our MCs do make it to a HEA but its lack luster at best and totally disappointing given how badly Ryan treated Brandon and the vast amount of time.

I cannot recommend this sorry to say.

Lovable Characters

I am giving this book a 5 STAR based on the fact that it held my attention the entire time. I loved both characters, and there was a plot, too. The cover is beautiful. Since I listen to my books on my Kindle, his formatting didn't disturb me. There are two ways to format a book, one for your printed version and one for the e-version. There were some errors, but they didn't take away from the story for me. If you're a grammar nut, then you might be slightly disturbed. I really got into the characters' feelings. I really wish the author would write more about these two characters. I just loved them. I'll be reading more from this author. I didn't read book 1 yet since the blurb had different names. This blurb, title and cover called my name and I did enjoy it.

Not quite what I was expecting

The premise for this story is so, so good. But the execution is a little lacking. We see the two main characters meet and have a couple of conversations, then fast forward a full year. This story skips over the vast majority of the "getting to know you" and of the healing that is so necessary for this kind of story.

I wanted to love it, but I felt like it was a little rushed.

On the upside - this has a HEA, no cliffhanger and is a standalone part of a series.

Love all of Retzig novels

This is a wonderful sequel. Her characters and story are well developed and you care to learn more about them. Her stories are not the typical arc of romance novels. I would highly recommend this book.

Another Great Story from Ms. Retzig

Though this story, as opposed to Kate and Nan's journey in the last installment, wasn't quite as perilous for character outcomes, the characters continue to be rich. The head hoping was skillfully done, allowing us to be relieved of perceptions in our good guys, while keeping us in the dark about the bad guys.

There were enough dangled tendrils to allow me the hope of more to come from the PI, ney Met. I agree it's a slippery slope when the law and right don't quite align themselves. Let's hope our do-gooder with the big heart walks it safely.

SPOILER ALERT:

I do not get the hope between Jaden sleeping with and defending Mary to Mary being Jaden's long-lost mother. Huh?!? Anyway. The rest was great. Hopefully Sash will become more than two dimensional.

I've always loved mysteries. Well, I love mystery stories, not necessarily IRL mysteries. Through the suspension of reality, I am able to dispassionately live through tangled intricacies in plots. Thank you, Ms. Retzig.

I loved this book. Excellent writing. I was glad I listened to The Wrong Woman before I started A Question of Trust. It really helps to read them in order. Love the depth of the characters. Excellent narration by Anne Day-Jones. Jane Retzig- Please keep writing the quality books that you do.

Convincing. Enthralling. Romantic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It would have to be the charismatic Jaiden because she is strong and brave but also remains vulnerable. Saskia is a very close second.

Have you listened to any of Anne Day-Joness other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes, I loved her narration of "The Wrong Woman" in which we first meet these characters. She adds to the story by differentiating between the characters so clearly and making each one believable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending - I'll say no more!

Be yourself!

What made the experience of listening to Bad Boy the most enjoyable?

Everything! The story, the characters, the suspense, the vengance, the HEA! Everithing. Of course the narraton of Randal Marsh was just perfect for Ren. His voice was smoth and sexy <3 Just like Ren is.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ren of course. He's a true hero. He was going through a lot and accepting that he wouldn't have the support of his family and best friend was def hard. But he had his friends and and his vlog and he made it. I'm so proud of him.

Have you listened to any of Randal Marshs other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first audiobook narrated by Randal Marsh and I loved it. Bad Boy is really unique in every sense of the word. The story is original and the narration fits perfectly to the story.

If you could take any character from Bad Boy out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Red of course. I'd take him to eat a huge burger with french fries and soda with so much ice. I think that's a food that he'd enjoy so much.

Another triumph.

Many readers have noted this is is the fourth volume in what they supposed was a trilogy. This is confusing, so allow me to clear it up: the Bacon series is actually a linked pair of trilogies, with Law's initial three volumes (Fires of London, Moon Over Tangier and The Prisoner Of The Riviera) taking the fictional Bacon through his middle age; and the forthcoming trilogy, of which Nights In Berlin is the first (to be followed by Afternoons in Paris and a title TBD) taking Bacon through his teen years.

Law deftly raised the action in the three preceding volumes to make Bacon, in real life an alcoholic painter with no discernible athletic skills, into what I would call a gay Sam Spade. This is delightful: Law, a Scot and a woman who grew up in that nation's lower class in wartime, is sharp with her take on British society at the time. Fans of Ross MacDonald will enjoy this series; Law's books are concerned with relationships that go awry and what spins out afterwards.

But casual browsers may ask: why all of a sudden is the fourth Bacon volume about a teenager? Law has said in a number of blogs and interviews that she felt that the real Bacon's life became very depressing after the war -- he descended into alcoholism -- and she felt that was not a fertile ground for her fiction. Apparently, she intended to end the series with the three volumes, but her family asked her to continue the series for private reading. It is has also been reported that her publisher accepted the idea of three subsequent novels sight unseen due to their popularity. As a result, the Bacon series hops back in time. (If you are the kind of person that was bothered by Star Wars' release schedule, this may not be the series for you.)

All of these books are fast read, but what makes them special is the fact that the character of Bacon is so well developed. Whether he is 17 or 45, he comes off as an engaging (if perhaps a bit too horny) rogue of a character. Some commenters have commented on the gay sex in these books, and it is true that people who have difficulty with same-sex relationships will perhaps not enjoy this book. That said, it is worth noting that the author, a surprise LAMBDA award winner, is an elderly white woman who has been married for over a half-century.

Flamboyant Thriller in the Gay Berlin of 1927

I got a kick out of this frothy thriller set during the latter days of the Weimar Republic, but not as big a kick as I got out of Janice Law's "Moon Over Tangier," the 'Francis Bacon' novel that got me interested in this series originally.

Fast Paced and Exciting Holiday Rom Suspense

Where does Stranded rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Probably middle of the group. I enjoyed this story- characters, setting, situation and much of the plot, but I also felt that it need a few more pages about the secondary character who was introduced and his actions never explained.

What other book might you compare Stranded to and why?

Lisa Henry and JA Rock's Playing the Fool trilogy for the antagonistic lovers who have some secrets and issues to work out. Same reason for why I'd compare it to Abigail Roux's Cut & Run series or SE Jakes' Hell or High Water series.

What does Dorian Bane bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Well I have read the book and I just experienced it with Dorian Bane's narration so I can say without a doubt that it really came to life in my imagination having him narrate. Many times when I do both and read it first, the narrator clashes with what I established in my own head about the characters and their voices. But not this time. I thought he did the characters and the story with intuition and skill.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Would you listen to Stranded again? Why?

I would, and will. I loved the marriage of the written word and the narration.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Oh that's hard. I liked them both so much. Cabe was wounded and betrayed, his heart buried under a steel exterior he projects so it won't get broken again. Brax, the man that fell hard for Cabe and made the ultimate sacrifice to protect Cabe.

What does Dorian Bane bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He gives both men dimension. There's only so much that can be conveyed through words on paper, Bane brings their personalities and pain to life perfectly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book was pretty much non stop start to finish, but I particularly liked the end, when Cabe went to claim what was his.

This was a very interesting book highly recommend it

I find the writer did a pretty good job of getting you to like the character from the very beginning and Kevin you wanting him to find happiness again I'll be sure wondering what you would do two characters are great and well written together so far the cancer tournaments great health of the continuous reading the series will be very much of the same direction the story was very well done by the shannana
