Down at the ranch...

** spoiler alert ** I received this ARC from the author through InstaFreebie.

As I've come to expect from her books, the characters are sweet and I got my HEA.

I've read several books by the author and realize there are limitations when writing a short story. Unfortunately there were several instances where gaps in the plot detracted from the overall telling of this one.

When one of the characters is released from jail, how did he have money for a motel for a month? He only had $10 in the wallet that was returned to him. Did he eat during this time? He was unable to find a job. Where was his family?

Why did the uncle come to stay at the ranch? And for a month? Was this an annual vacation for him and his family? It sounded more like a plan to move there permanently...

Having grown up in a farm the tending to the animals took precedent over everything. Even eating. Especially a sit down breakfast first thing in the morning.

I still enjoyed the book but these discrepancies bothered me.

Reads Like a Modern Twilight Zone Episode!

Blends a Twilight Zone atmosphere of aliens trying to influence mankind with an emerging love story between the two main characters Captain Michael Rogers and Captain Maximillian Blair. As usual, the government officials have ulterior motives to get Rogers to open up about what happened while he was on an alien world for nearly 40 years. The motives, to Dr. Blair's delight keep the two men together and growing closer with each passing day. Unfortunately, powers that be push too hard and the men are thrust into saving Rogers' true mission on Earth. Great story!Coming Home Again

Good story, heavy on the romance

This is a is a sweet little romantic story set within an alien abduction-type scenario. I am not generally a category romance reader but I was engaged enough with characters and events to get through in two sittings. Over all, I enjoyed it.

Why can't I give it more than 5 stars?

I'd give it 6 stars if I could, but this was a great little science fiction romp, with a twist. It had aliens, weirdness, the unknown and everything you'd want from this genre. Definitely has the makings of a longer story or universe.

Max has always hoped that heâd find some sign of life on other planets but he certainly never expected to go into work and find that, not only does that alien life emphatically exist, heâs going to be getting up close and personal with it. Giving their unexpected visitor a checkup is perfectly fine, he is a doctor after all, but when his job is threatened unless he can âprocureâ additional information, at any cost, Max balks before reluctantly giving in. Determined to do what heâs been ordered to do without compromising his morals is easier said than done, however, and the situation is further complicated when he finds himself attracted to his patientâand learns the attraction is mutual. When military meddling inadvertently sets in motion events that could lead to the start of an intergalactic war, Max will have to choose for himself whatâs more important; his life as he knows it or the man thatâs quickly stealing his heart.

While not overly detailed, I liked this story quite a bit. The âalienâ aspect of the story was much different than I had anticipated, and I was happy to be surprised by that. The author also chose to go with an âold styleâ flying saucer for the space ship but still managed to make it unique from what Iâd been expecting, which was nice. Things do move quickly in this story, necessitated by the length, but I didnât feel as though the story was overly rushed and was overall quite satisfied.

Great Book!!

This is my second Erin Lee book. I actually read my first two back to back. I liked both but I like this one the best so far. Even though the characters frustrated me with thinking the grass is greener. Hey, that's the point of this book, right? We're all guilty of thinking the grass is greener at times but I do believe that some people do it more than others. Weirdly, having a serious chronic illness (a few of them) and a couple of issues with mental health have made me stop and take a minute when I do start to think someone else's grass is greener. My issues really aren't always something you can see, so what makes me think that I can see theirs?

I enjoyed the three different POVs in this book. I think my favorite was Nora. It was a short but good read. I can't say much because I don't want to give anything away. Everyone thinks everyone else's grass is greener, basically. I liked the end. Nothing was tied up in neat little bows but I feel like it fit. It seemed realistic. You'll just have to read it to see. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the Escape series plays out!!

Greener gets my five star approval.

Greener begs the question if the grass is always greener where others live and answers it with things aren't always what they seem. The main characters: Nora, a shrink with her own set of issues, Dennis, who's hiding in Escape, CO because of his sexual lifestyle, and Caroline, who has spent much of her life in a psych ward are well developed characters who pull us into their stories and make us care.

This is the third book in the Escape from Reality Series that I've read. A new one comes out each month on the 15th. I can't wait for the next novella. The characters intermix between books written by twenty different authors writing in many genres. I love series because I don't know what I'll get next.

Riveting

Action packed, full of drama, heartache, love and dedication. William Charles Furney shares an amazing tale about Anne Bonny and Mary Read and their journey of survival through towns with enemies, dangerous seas, and friendships that hold grudges. When Mary kidnaps Anne's child, Tye, and sails away with him, Anne must do everything in her power to get him back. Even if that means giving up her long time alias of Peg Brennan and becoming the pirate she swore she would never be again. Through trials like Anne's never been through before, she's bound to save Tye, and maybe herself.

I am blown away by this book. You captured my apt attention in the first paragraph and kept it to the very end. Your storytelling skills, character development and command of multiple topic areas were incredibly impressive--food, nature, sailing, explosive devices, slang of the era put me squarely in the time. That said, it was just an absolute great read! You offered a rich and explosive environment in which to tell the story of these two incredible women. I may have been in Hawaii on vacationlast week, but I felt like I was in North Carolina on a pirate ship. Bravo Bill, Bravo!!!!!! Now waiting for the movie and the sequel.

Highly recommend it.

I love that each of the titles to this series are so apropos to the content.

Told from Miners POV this time, the story is quite a whirlwind of all the things that happen to the two men: Pirates, another evil Wizard, a foolish King, a Slave Market, almost dying multiple times

While this was interesting from Miners point of view, I missed having Enneks. I regretted that the interesting things that happened to Ennek were mostly off page with anecdotal recounting by Ennek later to Miner. Those were action moments I really wanted to read.

Thats not to say Miners adventures were minor, he does go through quite a lot, mostly getting captured, being hurt, and then being rescued by Ennek, but the reality is Miner continuously saved the day. He saves Enneks life, he prevents Ennek from embracing his inner Monster, he physically prevents Ennek from being trapped and usedjust as in Stasis they both continue to save each other.

Joel Leslie does a terrific job with the narration here. His character voices, timing, pacing, and emotion are all fantastic.

I just flat out enjoyed this audio.

Once again, this is a low steam book with a cliffhanger ending. Yet its not the kind that leaves you angry, and remember, the final book Equipoise has already been released.

Im looking forward to seeing what happens to Ennek and Miner next.

Part 2 gets our heroes into more trouble!

What did you love best about Flux?

This is part 2 of a trilogy. I enjoyed the first book, despite the terrible narration. The story gets our heroes into more dangerous situations as their love grows. Kim Fielding adds new characters and another country for our heroes to adventure into. The writing was very good and the story was intriguing, keeping my interest throughout. I can't wait for Book 3!

What did you like best about this story?

I really enjoyed the parts where Ennek and Miner stayed with a family in their new found land, despite the language barriers. The sweetness of the ladies who realized that Ennek and Miner were lovers and welcomed them into their homes, one of whom even paints a picture of the two of them holding each other that captures the beauty of their love. Also, we have Ennek's Wizard powers developing, but he is still connected to his mentor, Thelieus, despite Thelieus being in stasis. This allows him to tap into Theliues's powers. He is still kind of a loose cannon and does some bad things, but you'll have to listen to find out what those are! No spoilers!

What about Joel Leslies performance did you like?

Thank God for Joel Leslie taking over the narration! I hope he does part 3! Joel adds such depth and life to every book he has narrated. He is able to do just about any voice and any accent with a realism that is just right for that particular character.

Frazier knocks it out of the park and into Olympus

When you listen to audiobooks on a regular basis, as a listener you start to find performers you love. Before you know it, when youre looking at the lists of audiobooks, youre searching the listings not by title or author, but by who performs the audiobook, and then reading the blurbs of the books theyve done. Finding a new and awesome performer is like finding a new author, and in fact absolutely leads to just that: finding new authors through the performer.

I have a trio of performers like that. Barbara Rosenblatt, Jane Entwhistle, and Jason Frazier. Every time I go looking for a new audiobook, I quickly search the three out to see if theyve got anything new, and when they do, it jumps to the top of the list for consideration.

So, you can imagine my joy at finding a new Jason Frazier. In and of itself, that was a fine, fine thing. He doesnt narrate, he acts. His voice acting is so great Ive twice now purchased audiobooks for which I have already read the books physically, and listened to them as a second read-through. To be clear: I nearly never re-read. But Jason Frazier doing Steve Bermans Vintage? And Gavin Atlass The Full Ride? There was no resisting, and it was a joy to revisit.

Now, add to that the realization that this new book narrated by one of my favorites is a novella from Felice Picano, and all hesitation was gone. Id clicked before Id even read the description. I had it queued up for the next dog walk, and in the space of two days I was done.

An Asian Minor: The True Story of Ganymede is a very small class of narratives: mythology retold with a clever and consistent voice. Quite a few times while I was listening to the story, I caught myself thinking of Mark Merliss An Arrows Flight, but where Merlis crafted a unique contemporary hybrid of the myth and a modern world, Picano instead does stick to the time period in question as Ganymede tells his story, but it is told now, by the immortal in the present day, with all the colloquialisms and long-view wisdom the eternal and immortal young man has gathered since.

That conversational voice, written so cleverly by Picano and given such charm and insouciance through Fraziers performance, is magic in a bottle. Or, well, an earbud.

As Ganymede sets us straight on what really went down from the time he was born, receiving a troublesome destiny, this breezy tone delights with amusing asides and clarifications of many a mistake in the retelling of the modern myth: most centrally, Ganymede insists, the notion he was somehow some innocent doe-eyed youth with no idea of the powers at play around him.

Very interesting novel.....

A solid 3.75! This is the first time that I have read Cara Hoffman's work, and I don't think it would be the last. I found this novel to be very interesting in subject matter. I felt that the novel flowed very well. The story is set in Athens Greece, and we are introduced to a cast of characters who are known as "runners." Runners are individuals who entrap tourists from buses and trains in the area, and persuade them to stay at hotels/brothels in order to get a kick back from the establishments in order survive.

I loved the premise, and the characters were very interesting in themselves. I wish that the author would have expanded a bit in the narrative, allowing readers to get to know the characters a bit more, also I wish that I would have gotten to know the tourists as well, which this is not really covered throughout the novel, we are left to wonder where these people came from, what they were thinking about the runners they encountered, would have been nice to get a piece of that dialogue. Overall, great story, enjoyable, a decent read, with some improvement needed.

Cara Hoffman is doing some amazing work

Hoffman's vision is demanding. She writes about broken systems (the patriarchy, America itself, and in Running, broken families). Her characters are people who live in the cracksâassault survivors, veterans, the homeless, the mentally ill. She gives them a kind of freedom, a savage independence despite their extreme vulnerability. Her first-person protagonist, Bridey, articulates what exactly is needed to survive not only a nuclear holocaust, but the world as it is: "You have to be strong to be one of the last people on earth. Strong enough to see if there are other survivors. Strong enough to live alone for years, looking."

Iâll grant it: reading her is a tense space. Yet I admire her work exactly because thereâs something unrelenting about it, a kind of âWhere do we go from here, broken as everything is?â She doesnât put up with illusions or luxury. Her writing is strongly moral in its dead rejection of status quo and unearned privilege. Thereâs a hardness to her fiction, no place to rest unless youâve already given up on the system in question and proven that you can survive on your own. Hoffman wants us to be uncomfortable.

The discomfort, though, is part of what makes her work so thought-provoking. And in Running, she gives us a trio of sharply imagined expats in Athens, whose hustle for basic necessities take them further into dangerous territory, toward a decision that resonates across decades.

Beautifully written love story

I absolutely love this audio book. I fell in love with the characters and the story line. Could not stop listening , the narrator did a great job too.
