leathery goodness

It is a good solid story and I liked it allot. The Narrator, I think he did well better than some I've listened to. The flow was off and I just adjusted my kindle to read slower, all was fine.

Great story. Bad reader.

Love this story. I read it a while back and was thrilled to see it in audio format. Unfortunately the guy reading it has serious pacing problems and is just not pleasant to listen to. I only made it an hour in before I had to give it up.

If you can stand the reader it really is a great story worth your time.

Came for the narrator, stayed for the story

I loved, loved this historical romance set in Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. I actually listened to the 2nd book in the series first and was so intrigued with this couple, wanted to listen to their story. This is a very different book than the second. There is much more romance and intrigue than in the 2nd book. Teo is a mercenary who accepts a job to kidnapped what he thinks is a spoiled English Lord. What he finds is a wonderfully grounded young man who is being used as a pawn in the English/Spanish peace negotiation. Set this with the backdrop of Spain during the Spanish Inquisition; not really friendly to gay men during that time, and it made for a wonderful story. Teo is a protector by nature and Christian is forced to become more than his station in light of the danger they both face. The narrator is a favorite and he really does a wonderful job bringing these men to life; complete with Spanish and English accents.

Riveting Love

Would you consider the audio edition of Checkmate to be better than the print version?

I did not know there was a printed edition.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the deep insight into the emotional, and psychological battle the lovers were struggling through and some aspects of their needs in regard to their intimacy

What does Peter B. Brooke bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I never read the book

If you could take any character from Checkmate out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Raul, he was ultimately cool and he knew who he was in life.

I do hope that a sequel is in the works, fantastic story.

Forbidden love during the Spanish Inquisition

Remind me not to take the Time Machine back to old Spain... Lots of big swords on hot, hunky, swarthy dudes but touching often lead to the lash, the rack and the stake. Ouch....

Who was your favorite character and why?

Christian and Teodoro, Raul and Gerard and Esteban. I can't pick a favorite they were all important to such an exciting story.

Peter B. Brooke did an excellent reading of this book. He read with such passion and all the characters were very distinctive. I don't now how he did it. All that was missing was the clanking of swords and some classical Spanish music!

Wonderful story...

What a wonderfully, fantastic story. Though I have not read any of the others in this series, I adore Henry and Locke. The build-up to their relationship was tantalizing, taunting, and titillating...the basic three "t's". For me, Skylar M. Cates, presented the two characters in such a way that I could relate to both of them and I felt for both of them. I remember being Henry, so sure that my body image was the reason I couldn't find love; as well as understanding Locke's sense of not being good enough. I am a good guy, that like's to be a bit bad! The two are perfect together and I think that Cates did an outstanding job telling their story. I also enjoyed the mix of intrigue and mystery...it added to the story. The secondary characters also added to the mix and I found myself drawn toward James and Ron...feeling for them. Which is a good sign of a wonderful author. Now for the narration by Matt Baca...LOVE HIM!! His vocal inflections provided a visionary connection between the characters and the reader. I will look forward to listening to him in the future! Which is going to be soon because I am going to start listening to the rest of this series...Definitely would recommend...excellent author and fantastic narrator!

Best book ever!!

Omg!! I loved loved loved this book. My favorite of the series hand down if I could give it 10 star I would!! & Matt Baca what can I say?? I have a crush on his beautiful voice, he only made me love the story more. I really hope he narrates more books I long to hear his sexy voice some more in future books. ::sighs::

Cop and CPA Suspense!

This was a love story of a cop who is afraid of commitment. meets a guy who don't do hook ups. They compromise for a criminal case and realize they have more in common than they think. Worth the credit.

Outstanding in the genre

This book is of unusually high all-around quality: believable characters and a detective story (that is actually quite good) rolled into one, sprinkled with hot sex scenes (wait for the handcuffs!) and a convincing and satisfying conclusion. The narrator is perfect, never misses a beat.

Amazing

This was such a treat to listen to. The first thing any listeners should know is that this story takes place over 4 books; so this one is only 25% of the story. The good news is that all 4 books are published. The bad news is that only this one is in audiobook so far. And that is really a shame because this is an AMAZING narrator. He is not reading the story, he is performing it. He really brought these characters to life, and not just the MC. As for the story, all I can say is I am committed to reading all four books. I bought the 2nd before I even finished this one because I knew I wanted to continue with this couple. The writing is great and the characters have warmth and depth. Jaime is an English Earl who has decided to somewhat reject the trappings of his birthright and become a Scotland Yard inspector. Remy is an American detective that cant seem to fit in and has a traumatic past. They are brought together to uncover an international human trafficking scheme. The story does not evolve in the traditional mm romance way; which is why I am so intrigued. The narrator, who I think is British, performs wonderfully with both the very upper crust accent for Jamie and the American accent for Remy. Definitely worth a credit.

Good detective mystery

This book kept my interest and was completely different in some ways from my usual reads.

Great story, brilliant narrator!

Where does A Simple Romance rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I've never listened to an audiobook before. I won this in a contest, and had to create an Audible account to claim my prize. I have to say, it's set a high bar for other audiobooks to live up to, but I'm grateful for the experience. Thank you J.H Knight and Dreamspinner Press!

This book has everything you could want in romantic fiction.

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Nick did an amazing job of giving each character a unique and easy-to-recognize identity. He also portrayed all of the different emotions beautifully. I found myself replaying some parts over and over just because he gave such a great performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did my best to arrange times to listen to it in large chunks, because part of the enjoyment came from immersing myself in the story and letting the world fall away while I was listening.

The title does a good job of setting up the story. It is a simple romance, a lovely, warm, sexy story with a satisfyingly happy ending. I highly recommend both this author and this narrator, and I fully intend to acquire more books from both of them.

Great author and narrator, sweet story

Skip is at a loss. Hes lost his husband of years to another man and cant stomach the idea of staying in the same apartment or even the same city as his ex, so he moves back home to his mothers house for regrouping. She convinces him to get a job teaching at his old high school and then drops several big hints that he might enjoy meeting the new physics teacher while hes there.

It turns out the physics teacher is none other than Skips first crush, Paul. While both are now out and proud, back then only Paul was, and Skip couldnt deal with it, so he never acted on their mutual attraction. Now that theyre adults, the only thing holding Skip back is the fact that Skip is only 4 months out of a serious relationship and not sure he wants to be involved in another so soon, on the rebound.

In addition, Paul is a widower- his husband died from cancer two years ago and Skip is leery of being Pauls rebound man, as well.

But the two are mega-hot for each other and after their first date there is really no slowing them down.

The rest of the bulk of the story is Paul and Skip deepening their relationship.

Sweet and Unique Old West Romance

Jack Tulle is a completely unique character with a totally hidden past and an openly respectful relationship with the townsfolk who like him and adore his precocious eight-year-old daughter Abigail. But how Jack got here with Abigail and how they will figure out how to keep going with their interestingly loving life together both gets thrown for a loop and also tied up neatly with a ribbon simultaneously with the arrival of one Tom Jude, who is the second most completely unique character in this book.

Yes, there are a hundred little lies here, some of which Jack reveals along the way in his voice which is sardonic, stoic and at times hilarious. And some of those lies, especially toward the end, come together a little too quickly and somewhat superfluously, but there's also a beautifully drawn ending which softens the heart and stirs the soul. Nicely done.

A hundred lies and one truth... Love

Very good story. This is a western, although it does not feature cowboys but rather card sharks. Jack and Tom were once fellow grifters as well as lovers. Jack was comforted by a woman who he married and raised her child . He is now a pillar of the community who runs the general store. Jack and Tom parted ways when Jack married although he never made love to his wife. She died shortly after giving birth to a daughter and Jack devoted himself to the daughter and a life he thought to make him worthy after a misspent life. Tom comes back into his life after 8 years and then the story is told.

A FRESH NEW VOICE - GREAT WRITING AND A GOOD STORY

What a joy it is to find a new writer with a delightful imagination AND a command of the English language! I enjoyed this romance from beginning to end. The two men were fun to know. The story had depth and fully realized characters. I usually read this sort of romance only with a contemporary setting, but broke my rule as I liked the other reviews of the book. I am glad I took the chance and will buy anything else Jon Wilson writes. Lucky us!

Just finished "A Hundred Little Lies" by Jon Wilson. Great story, loved it all. Not "just another western paperback" Great balance of characters and suspense, with unexpected turns, and tears. Like riding a nice saddle horse; comfortable, yet each new step an unknown.

Very cute!

This is a very short, very cute, GFY with amnesia! Adam wakes up not knowing who he is and everything about his relationship with Joe screams of something more than friends. He cant help but see the longing in Joes eyes and though he claims they are only friends, with his amnestic mind, he wonders: why?

As the memories begin to return, Adam remembers that it is Joes desire to leave their roommate situation that propelled him into the street, blinded by emotion, and into harms way. He realizes he doesnt want to ever be apart from Joe and that he has probably been lying to himself for years about his true feelings.

Luckily the couple has been granted a second chance to get things right, and with a new set of priorities, Adam convinces Joe to give a romantic relationship a try.

I love the GFY story line. Add in amnesia and I was hooked! Chris Scully is a new author for me, but she did a great job of telling a great story in a few pages. We move quickly through the amnesia part and begin to deal with the much tougher relationship changing stuff.

I was very glad to see there was a sequel and I highly recommend reading it as well, because it takes off where this ends, giving our couple their first explorations into being gay.

I highly recommend this short story and give it 4.5 of 5 stars.

Audio:

Jeff Gelder is a recurrent narrator for this genre and he does a nice job. I was disappointed that the many Italians in this story did not have much of an accent, I thought that would have added a nice touch.

The story is still good and he does a nice job of fading into the background, yet giving each voice enough distinction that we know who is speaking.

I give the narration a 3.5 of 5 stars.

I loved Joe, the way he was described the way he treated joe, it was so obvious his love and his feelings, I loved his family

to know that love is real, to know that people don'y choose to be gay they are just who they are added to that the deep love the togetherness this is love, this is a family. It's a wonderful story

Sweet and second chance

This was my original short thought on this book: Very cute and Joe, he was so adorable.

Edit: Re-read this and liked it just as much. After reading When Adam Kissed Me I couldn't decide who I liked more, Adam or Joe, and I still can't.

Now that Ive listened to it I love them both. Adam has temporary amnesia from being hit by a car. As his lifelong best friend, Joe is just horrified that he nearly lost the man. As Joe takes care of him, and as the memories start to slowly return, you get to see the love and devotion there is.

The Beauty Within...

A story about never forgetting where you come from or else a mysterious gray-haired older lady will make you remember. A play on a Christmas Carol, Javier must realize what he has become and remember who and what he use to be. During this journey, Javier learns that those whom he thought were important were not and those forgotten were indeed important parts of who he was. An enjoyable tale that I recommend...

I think this audible was the first time I've heard Morey actually whine, but it was perfect for this story.

Javier Torres went from an isolated, over weight and insecure teenager to a conceited, self absorbed and condescending adult. Somewhere along the way, Javier forgot what it was like to be the one who was picked on, ridiculed and ostracized because of his appearance and sexual preference. Enter one lovely little old woman with silver hair and a stunning smile to remind him.

When Javier wakes up in the body he thought he left behind and his partner jets off to vacation without him, he is left alone and confused just days before Christmas. A cup of coffee in the mall and a random message scrawled on the table send Javier back to the place he couldnt get away from fast enough a decade ago, home.

In a twist on the Its a Wonderful Life and Christmas Carol stories, Thomas takes a man that lost sight of whats important, and shows him that the grass isnt always greener on the other side. In an effort to hide the pain of his past Javier re made himself only to turn into the type of person that sent him away in the first place. When the tables are once again turned and he heads back home, he is embraced, to spite his appearance.

I really enjoyed the moral of this story and how Thomas explored such a wide array of emotions in such a short amount of time. Add to that the voice of Paul Morey and his ability to stretch himself into a multitude of characters from one breath to the next. I dont think Ive ever heard him actually whine before though, and it was so perfect for Javier when he is at his lowest point. Javier learns through pain and disappointment what is truly important. The good thing is, its not too late for him to have a chance at happiness.
