This book is very enjoyable to listen to and especially if you are atheist very helpful for making points on the failure of religion

This is religion, not a story.

There is nothing within that even the staunchest Christian apologist would. It support, if only it was about their invisible friend and not the FSM.

3 Noodley-Appendages out of Five

I love the idea of this book. It's definitely original and fun. However the book suffers from some problems related to being a parody of the ridiculous logic creationists use to try to defend their positions. There are sections of long-winded section with ridiculous nonsensical math equations that are decent parody but are parodying something freakin' boring and thus are also pretty boring. The book starts out strong but then all the essays and whatnot starts getting tedious.

Ramen brother!

Well it was a bit heavy on the math and science I feel that listening to this while nodding slowly certainly made me look smarter which means that after finishing it I must be smarter. Highly educational and I will probably listen to it repeatedly increasing the enthusiasm of my nodding until I appear to be a super genius.

Changed my life!

Have you been touched by his noodley appendage? The FSM is just as plausible as any other god (if not more so!). Give his noodliness a chance.

Audio isn't the right format for this sort of book

I want to be clear that my rating on this one isn't a reflection of the book itself - I'm just trying to suggest that you may want to stop and consider (as I should have) if audio is the right format for a book that is almost completely composed of independent 30 second sound bytes each of which starts with the phrase "New Rule!"

It was just too repetitive to enjoy in this format, which I should have realized if I'd given it more thought ahead of time. I'm sure it's a clever amusing book for people that like Bill Maher, but only if it's in physical form where you can pick it up, read a couple, and put it back down. There's only so many times you can hear "New Rule!" in a three minute period before you realize your judgement was off. Definitely my own fault for not thinking it through.

New Rules Everyone; New Rules

A compilation of many of the New Rules segments from his HBO show Real Time. The liberal Commentator and extremely religulous (I probably spelled that wrong) man gives a broad view of rules that need to be enacted; at least for a little while. His attacks combine politics and humor; intentional humor as opposed to the accidental humor exhibited by the politicians and news commentators. Liberals, or anyone who despised the Bush/ Cheaney administration and enjoys the heretical joy of piercing the sanctimony of organized religion will enjoy this one.

For those of you who practice religion on a regular basis or support conservative politics if you don't already know Bill Maher trust me you'll hate it and probably him.

Easy to get offended but what the hell...

First of all if the "F" word or any mention of sexual body parts offends you, this isn't the book for you but if you want to think of our county in a new light, give this book a try. Not only are his "rules" good advice to live by, his essays give unique ways at looking at what is presented to us on a platter in the evening news. It's worth being offended to be prodded to think.

Great Material But A Little Hard To Listen To.

Despite the fact that the majority of the material in this book is hilarious, it is almost impossible to listen to this book for more than 20 minutes at a time.

First of all, you GOTTA be kidding me! An average of only 2.5-to-3.0 stars???

Really, Nation???

This is a PARODY of "Go The F**k To Sleep," which was originally narrated by the only voice on the planet which could have possibly narrated "Go The F**k To Sleep"... Samuel L. Jackson.

And now the resultant "Go The F**k To Sleep" PARODY, "If You Give a Kid a Cookie, Will He Shut the F--k Up?: A Parody for Adults," was, likewise, narrated by the only voice on the planet which could have possibly narrated "If You Give A Kid A Cookie, Will He Shut the F--k Up?"... Bobcat Goldthwait!

What kind of narrator were people honestly expecting to read this book aloud to them? Stefan Rudnicki?????

As for the vapid criticism of Mr. Goldthwait's narration performance, are any of the previous reviewers who specifically cited Mr. Goldthwait's narration skills, actually FAMILIAR with Mr. Goldthwait's comedic talents and his unique sense of timing a line for maximum effect?

I can understand that a few folks who are tight with a buck might be a little bummed that they had to pay $0.93 (if they missed the free for a day gift from Audible) for only 2 minutes of material. Oh, well...

As for myself, I feel that Marcy Roznick wrote a GREAT little parody and that Macmillan Audio gets bonus points for actually having taken the time to properly voice this short gem by hiring Mr. Goldthwait.

Kudos all around for a rare, comedic gem!

Totally worth it

The perfect narrator for a hilarious book for parents. Sure to be in my Rotation permanently. Bob Golthwait is PEFECT for the story.

It was okay for what it was

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I am familiar with the If You Give a Kid a Cookie books and this was my first Audible purchase. I mostly just wanted to see how the program worked. The sound is good, but the text came on a little strong for my taste. I don't know if its only the text or the combinationn of text and voice of Bobcat Goldthwait. So, it's over the top (IMHO) for the text, but mild for Goldthwait.

Reminds me of my ex husband

I believe the story was loosely based on actual incident that my ex husband has done. I am the ex wife that handed him divorce papers as I bailed him out. Bobcat did an excellent job narrating this incident and its full glorious splendor. A great bedtime story for children that can serve as a warning for what may happen. So never snitch on your Pops kids.

Ultimately, the book is a compendium of anecdotes tied together by the ideas of faith, trust, and belief, concepts that Jillette better understands through work and family than he does through any religion.

Nobody else could narrate this book, as Jillette's radio-ready and television-tried nasal rasp is too well known and too much fun. He is in fine form here with some of his best rants, and listeners will immediately judge him as honest, however else they judge him. Jillette earnestly recounts the deaths of his father and sister, pirouetting seamlessly between such sad stories and the more ridiculous moments of his life in Las Vegas. These include deflowering an ex-Kosher Jew with a double bacon cheeseburger, accidentally burning his genitalia on a hair dryer at an ex-girlfriend's in the middle of the night, and tossing his cookies while in zero gravity with Billy Gibbons. Though this book is unlikely to convert to atheism anyone who isn't halfway there already, Penn Jillette's charisma certainly shines through. Book is great, narration is awful.

I read Main Street years ago and thought it was time to reacquaint myself with the story. The book is great, but this narrator was awful. No subtlety, weird and inconsistent accents, makes Carol sound like a helpless sap, and pronounces the name Bea, bee-ah. Just terrible. I ended up buying another version because I couldn't stand it.

Excellent description of the political battlefield

What made the experience of listening to Rules for Radical Conservatives the most enjoyable?

I really had never heard anything like this before. This man analyzed the parts of the political debate and how the left has succeeded in mastering the process. The right has simply showed up to the game and thought since they obviously had the best ideas they would win. The author shows that having the right ideas is not enough since most of the people who vote can not articulate a rational reason for their choice. Something else motivates them to vote, and the author shows us some of the tactics that need to be used.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You could listen to this book in a sitting, I listened to it on the road in my truck.

Would you try another book from David Kahane and/or John Allen Nelson?

I was looking for a book that would provide insight into dealing with left wing ideologues. I was hoping to find a book that countered Saul Olinkys Rule for Radicals. This was not it.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Kahane again?

I wouldn't be likely to consider buying another book from this author.

Would be much funnier with a different narrator

Would you try another book from P. J. O'Rourke and/or Christopher Lane?

No. I don't think Christopher Lane has the right tone to deliver what O'Rourke writes.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

O'Rourke has very witty comments about the political system. The chapter about freedom was a bit too long.

How could the performance have been better?

It could have been miles better.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Don't Vote - It Just Encourages the Bastards?

I wouldn't cut it, just make sure that he narration has the same tone as the book.

Amusement for political nuts

This book is very amusing, but filled with interesting information. I finished this in two days so it's very easy to get through and not boring at any level. Probably not the best O'Rourke book, but it's still worth having. I will say that O'Rourke is getting both bitter & better in age. Try it, you'll like it.

Meh

I am a long time fan of PJ's and even socialized with him once in Hong Kong. I have read all his past works and have often found myself in philosophical agreement. In this work PJ follows on much of the same Cato-esque philosophy, pointing it toward modern events.
