    Author: Jon Stewart
Narrator: Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, Wyatt Cenac, Jason Jones, John Oliver
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-21-10
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2432 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
Where do we come from? Who created us? Why are we here? These questions have puzzled us since the dawn of time, but when it became apparent to Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show that the world was about to end, they embarked on a massive mission to write a book that summed up the human race: What we looked like; what we accomplished; our achievements in society, government, religion, science, and culture - all in a lavishly produced audiobook of approximately 200 minutes.
After two weeks of hard work and nights in the recording studio, they had their audiobook. Earth (The Audioook) is the definitive guide to our species. With their trademark wit, irreverence, and intelligence, Stewart and his team will posthumously answer all of life's most hard-hitting questions, completely unburdened by objectivity, journalistic integrity, or even accuracy.
Read by Jon Stewart, the Daily Show correspondents, and featuring a special performance by Sigourney Weaver.
    Members Reviews:
Good book, not great. But let me explain.
The first thing you should know is that I gave this book four stars instead of five because it just didn't live up to how good the first Daily Show book [America: The Book] was. In fact, if you haven't listened to that one, do it first. It's funnier.
    THAT BEING SAID,
This book really is great. The "new" Daily Show cast never phones it in and every personality leaps into your ears. The book is whimsical, angry, funny, politically crazy, and everything else we look forward to from Jon Stewart and his gang. Listen to this one and America: The Book. you won't be too disappointed.
A Treat for Daily Show Fans
Presented as an introductory guide to a vanished human race for the benefit of visiting aliens, "Earth" is a perceptive, tightly written, awfully clever survey of mankind's whole history. It's especially good at leaving unsaid the best punchlines, which immediately form in the listener's mind. With help from others, it is nonetheless mostly the voice of Jon Stewart who--freed from the rather more frantic persona of his TV show--is a skilled and expressive narrator. It's a joy to hear.
Like Earth, it warms the longer you stay with it.
The premise of the book is quite simple and Jon Stewart works it well. The target listener is an unknown alien race which stumbles upon the book (in some format) sometime after the demise of mankind. In our wake, this (audio) book is what we've left to guide them and a candid guide to who we were, how we lived, what we did and how we did it.
This one is a slow starter. I was a little harsh on this aspect at first, but the book gets much better after the first hour and it's enough to pull it up to five stars. The beginning is a bit out of the realm of where Jon Stewart does his best stuff and it sort of slogs along discussing geographical formations and nature in as humorous a way as you can do it. The good news is that it ultimately pulls out of its stall and makes the day.
Nice transition from print to audio. Once we get into the politico-social humor, Stewart shines. And this is classic Jon Stewart, which saves the day. His poignant, honest and sarcastic commentary had me laughing out loud during my jogs.

Title: The Big Jewish Book for Jews
Subtitle: Everything You Need to Know to Be a Really Jewish Jew
    Author: Ellis Weiner, Barbara Davilman
Narrator: Ellis Weiner, Barbara Davilman, Yuri Rasovsky, Lorna Raver
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-09-10
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 34 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
If both Ike Turner and Isaac Bashevis Singer are Jewish, what does being Jewish even mean? The assimilated Jews of today are lost, and they need to relearn the old ways so their identity comes to mean something other than laughing knowingly at Curb Your Enthusiasm and being ambivalent about AIPAC. What they need is The Big Jewish Book for Jews, a hilarious compendium of instruction, handicrafts, and lore that will help them rediscover the traditional wisdom, skills, and recipes, going all the way back to Moses and the original Exodus from Egypt, when God was the only GPS you needed.
The Big Jewish Book for Jews brings together Jewish wit, inspiring tales, classic skills, and even pickle recipes, for the instruction and edification of the modern Jew. Listeners will learn how to sacrifice a lamb unto the Lord, the rules of Canasta, how to build a pyramid (both the Bernie Madoff and the Egyptian kind), and how not to accept the first table you are shown to in a restaurant. Through this funny and informative reference, listeners will build a connection to their ancestors and finally understand what it takes to be the Jew-est Jew of all.

    Hard to Hear
This books reads as if it had been written by 3 people who do a poor job at blending the 3 texts. It reads as if one of them was funnyt, one liked making fun of Jews and the other really, really, really like typing.
The book has many funny moments, but many others are not. Someone once told me a great joke: "A Jew goes to an Orthodox Rabi and asks he put a Mezuzah in his Ferrari, the Rabi asks 'what's a Ferrari?' and when he finds out it is a car he refuses, so the guy goes to a reform Rabi and ask him to put the Mezuzah in the Ferrari and the Rabi says: 'what's a Mezuzah?'. In this book the joke includes 3 Rabi, very slow speech from the narrator, very, very long pauses, and they repeat many, many times the whoe thing. They kill the punch line. They really kill the joke. I only use this as an example, of course.
Even though the book is not meant as a Hebrew Language Course, they pronounce many of the Hebrew words wrong, which makes no sense if they are trying to suggest ways to "be more Jewish". They say MezUzah instead of MezuzAh, iOmkeeper istead of iom kippUr, and so forth. That, to me, made the whole book "funny".
At the beginning of the book the volume goes up and down. Then they play music between chapters at what sounds like twice the volume of the one used for speech, so make sure you are ready to turn the volume down on your MP3 or car stereo.
They book could be good, but they need a second edition, a new editor to leave out the stuff that adds nothing to the book and a new director for the audiobook, someone who will take into account the proper pronunciation of foreign words, speech tempo, pausation, and, of course, an engineer who'd monitor the volume lever properly.
    Funny and Fun
Had me laughing and entertained throughout. A bit of history thrown in to round it out. A great read. Recommended.
    Kosher laughs all round!
Funny and informative. I took a Bible, a Hebrew phrase book and this book to Israel. This book got listened to the most, but it's so un-PC in places that we had to listen to it quietly just in case we gave offence to other residents in the hotel.

    Title: Winners and Losers
    Author: Paul Beck
    Narrator: Alec Sand

Length: 1 hr and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-15-10
    Publisher: Trout Lake Media
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
Originally course notes for a university level creative writing class, this book blossomed into something far more profound.
Authors note: Our creative writing class was trying to come to some concrete conclusions about the characters we were designing and discussing. We needed a simple and straight forward system to design characters that travelled well on what writers call a character arc. In a story, you want some characters to change. They are called round or dynamic characters. Some characters dont change and are called flat or static characters. We needed a path for the characters to travel, a code for them to follow. So we decided on a design principle where characters were one of two things, winners or losers. It worked out brilliantly.
More than just a 724 point list, this book is part philosophy, part poetry and part standup comedy routine. It will change the way you write, change the way you think, and ultimately change the way you live. Winners and Losers is a thought provoking and sometimes controversial examination of the human character. Every page is guaranteed to provoke discussion, dissonance and laughter.
    Editorial Reviews:
Originally course notes for a creative writing class, Winners and Losers is a mix of poetry, philosophy, and comedy - a 75-minute reading of the various whimsical things that could make one a loser. Performed with a wry wit by noted audiobook voiceover artist Alec Sand, listeners will find this collection of statements at turns thought-provoking and amusing, whether they agree that "If you live in Hawaii and don't surf, you are a loser" or "If you think that everyone is beautiful, you are a loser."

    WHAT. IS. THIS.
This "audiobook" is on sale for $3.91, and for good reason. This is one of the worst pieces of writing I've ever encountered: unoriginal, unimaginative, and certainly far from "thought provoking" and "controversial." HOW this made it to a recording studio, (much less to a publisher) is beyond me. An open mic night would have been more engaging. The Publisher's Summary said: "More than just a 724 point list, this book is part philosophy, part poetry and part standup comedy routine."
Mmm. No. It's just a 724 point list- and a negative point list for that matter. The Publisher's Summary also said: "It will change the way you write, change the way you think, and ultimately change the way you live." Really. (How presumptuous!) It didn't change the way I write, think or live. So... No, no and no. (Sorry for the hostility. It's surprising even to me. Can you imagine what my review would have been if I had paid MORE than $3.91? :-)
horrible may even be a practical joke
This was not a book. It is not philosophical, educational, or even entertaining. its literally a little over an hour of a guy listing things that make people winners and losers. "If you are X you're a winner". "If you're Y, then you're a loser". Although it was only 4 dollars, I am going to try to get my money back out of principle.

    3 Men + 1 White Canvas = Big TROUBLE
This is a wild ride of a play, ideal for making two hours fly by whether you are on the road or doing housework. Nothing is lost here from stage to audiobook, as the action resides almost exclusively in the dialogue. (Since the "Art" in question is a plain white canvas, even that need not be seen to be fully appreciated.) Reza's masterpiece of a play skewers notions of friendship, art, culture, intellectual criticism, and what constitutes true value, all in one incredibly enjoyable, wickedly funny, sharp and fast-paced interlude. Bob Balaban is perfectly cast as Serge, Brian Cox seethes as furious powder keg Mark, and Jeff Perry unexpectedly nearly runs away with the play as mild-mannered, stressed-to-the-max Ivan, whose lengthy monologue/rant about the debacle surrounding the printed invitations to his upcoming wedding nearly brings down the house.
This recording would deserve 5 stars across the board except for the incredibly bad decision by L.A. TheatreWorks to place AN INTERVIEW WITH THE TRANSLATOR in between Act One and Act Two!
Charming play on the value of art and friendship
A very enjoyable L.A. Theatreworks prodution of the Reza/Hampton play ART. The play is really just a one-acter, but it's well worth a listen (or two) for all that. I especially enjoyed Brian Cox's measured and sly performance. One complaint--for some reason, L.A. Theatreworks broke Act 1 and Act 2 with an interview with Christopher Hampton. I enjoyed the interview, but why on earth did they put it in the MIDDLE of the production? Its placement was a poor decision, which broke of the continuity of the play, in my opinion. However, ART is a most interesting download for any lover of contemporary theatre. BTW, Reza and Hampton also collaborated on this year's Tony-winning "God of Carnage," a much inferior play to ART, which depends largely on a theatrical gimmick for its popularity. (I saw it in April 2009 on B'way.) However, if you are interested in "God of Carnage," you should certainly try ART first.
    Hilarious Performance!
All three actors deliver a wonderful performance if this witty examination of art and friendship.
    Brilliant exploration of friendship
Top notch cast deftly wring out every drop of wit and heartfelt sentiment from this exquisitely written play that challenges our assumptions about artistic aesthetics, friendship, what binds us to others and the expectations, needs and desires we place on our friends. Very funny, provocative and moving.
Save Your Money - Save Your Time
If you REALLY like stories, simply because the characters are gay, you might enjoy this book. However if you expect a story, with wit, wisdom, or information, then you are wasting your time.
