    Title: Real Men Don't Apologize!
    Author: Jim Belushi
    Narrator: Jim Belushi
    Format: Abridged
Length: 4 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-26-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
Now he's sharing his unique perspective with this hilarious book about dating, marriage, and sex that is sure to hit home with every red-blooded American male - and the women who love them.
Any guy will relate to Belushi's advice from the school of hard knocks, such as the Big Toe Theory, about how women encroach on a man's territory, and how to avoid the Pearl Harbor Phenomenon, when women attack without provocation.
Belushi has strong opinions on how real men should act, and he relates his ideas with the trademark irreverent humor that has made him famous.
Included are sex definitions; a quiz to see if you're really ready to get married; tips on how to pick up women; and Jim's list of Critical Things About Men that Can't Be Found in Woody Allen Movies. This is the book that every guy needs in these turbulent, trying times.
    Members Reviews:
A well disguised relationship advice book.
On the surface this looks to be a funny little "waste time" kind of book.
Into the middle of the book Jim starts making some fine points about relationships and how to deal with and or find the woman in your life.
Realize he makes the point by comedically pushing it to comical extremes, but the underlying thought processes are actually pretty good.

  • The CEO of the Sofa Audiobook by P. J. O'Rourke

Title: The CEO of the Sofa
    Author: P. J. O'Rourke
    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-17-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
Ensconced on the domestic boardroom's throne (although not supposed to put his feet on the cushions), he faces a three-year-old who wants a cell phone, a freelance career devoted to writing articles like "Chewing-Mouth Dogs Bring Hope to People with Eating Disorders", and neighbors who smell like Democrats. ("That is, using smell as a transitive verb. When I light a cigar they wave their hands in front of their faces and pretend to cough.")
Undaunted - with the help of martinis - by middle age, P. J. holds forth on everything from getting toddlers to sleep ("Advice to parents whose kids love the story of the dinosaurs: Don't give away the surprise ending") to why Hillary Clinton's senatorial election victory was a good thing ("We Republicans were almost out of people to hate in the Senate. Teddy Kennedy is just too old and fat to pick on").
And P.J. leaps (well, groans and pushes himself up) from the couch to pursue assignments such as a high-speed drive across the ugliest part of India at the hottest time of the year; a blind (drunk) wine tasting with Christopher Buckley; and a sojourn at the U.N. Millennial Summit, where he runs the risk of perishing from boredom and puts readers in peril of laughing themselves to death.
    Critic Reviews:
"The comedic crescendo is his centerpiece, a summary of mankind's achievements at millennium's end. This insightful (yet also funny) essay alone is worth the price of admission." (Publishers Weekly)
"The author's humor works on both sides of the political aisle, and to make it even better, Dick Hill's performance is perfect." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Hmmmnnnn...
Very witty. I like his take on places like India, poverty and polution. I just don't know where I'm supposed to be when I finish reading the book.
Better Satirical Commentary Than Most ...
P.J. O'Rourke spares no one, especially not himself, in his sharp and funny observations on life, politics, culture, more politics, and family. I like his writing. Humor is a risky and delicate thing because it depends so much on knowing the reality behind the joke. For example, I am sure that there are many hysterical jokes that, oh, glass blowers tell among themselves that would elude me completely.
O'Rourke has the knack of being able to find the universal in some rather arcane scenery - like the bureaucrats in India, and has a lot of fun with wine tasting and altering the senses in general. He also likes to tee off on both of our political parties, though, being a Republican there seems to be more glee in his hammering on the Democrats (or maybe my being conservative and Republican, I get more glee from his pounding on the other guys. But I must admit to relishing his exposing the hypocrisy on the right as well.).
This book is a collection of his published articles (at least one unpublished before) that are woven (pasted - pastiched?) together as if they came out of events in O'Rourke's life rather being set up as separate articles. This device works OK and offers the P.J. the opportunity the opportunity of setting up a few more laughs.
I am sure you will enjoy some articles more than others, as I did. Again, humor is a difficult thing and sometimes you find yourself outside the point of the joke. But there are plenty enough delicious barbs that you will find yourself laughing out loud more than few times.

  • Peace Kills Audiobook by P. J. O'Rourke

    Title: Peace Kills
    Subtitle: America's Fun New Imperialism
    Author: P. J. O'Rourke
    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-17-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 24 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
Although he has written about foreigners and foreign affairs for years, P. J. O'Rourke has, like most Americans, never really thought about foreign policy.
Just as a dog owner doesn't have a "dog policy," says P.J., "we feed foreigners, take care of them, give them treats, and when absolutely necessary, whack them with a rolled up newspaper."
But in Peace Kills, P. J. finally sets out to make sense of America's "Great Game" (no, not the slot machines in Vegas). He visits countries on the brink of conflict, in the grips of it, and still reeling from it, starting with Kosovo, where he discovers that "Whenever there's injustice, oppression, and suffering, America will show up six months late and bomb the country next to where it's happening."
From there, it's on to Egypt, Israel, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq, where P. J. witnesses both the start and finish of hostilities.
    P. J. also examines the effect of war and peace on the home front - from the absurd hassles of airport security to the hideous specter of anthrax (luckily the only threats in his mail are from credit-card companies).
Peace Kills is P. J. O'Rourke at his most incisive and relevant - an eye-opening look at a world much changed since he declared in his number-one national best seller Give War a Chance that the most troubling aspect of war is sometimes peace itself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dick Hill's musky reading summons the whisky-tinged professorial presence of the author in conveying the underlying warmth of a disillusioned idealist. Peace kills, but in the meantime we can enjoy the bittersweet music of this human voice." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
An Excellent Cynical Romp around modern warfare
P.J. has done it again. His wit knows no bounds. His unique take on just about everything shows through in his look at the new reality of warfare. Tracing his steps from Kosovo to Iraq circa 2003 he attempts to show the cynical(and hilarious) side of war and of the peace that is sure to follow?
The audio is excellent quality and the narrator has an excellent understanding at the delivery the author was shooting for in the printed version.
Be sure to listen to the postscript- chapter 10. It is truly a moving and inspiring piece of literature and a fine tribute to all our military.
    Poor audio quality
The audio quality of this book was very poor. It seems the first and last words of each sentence were cut off. I am going to request a credit for this title.
    Disappointing
I have been a PJ O'Rourke fan, but this book is just silly - and not in a humorous way. It completely lacks his usual trenchant wit. Don't waste your credit.

Title: Dave Barry Is Not Taking This Sitting Down
    Author: Dave Barry
    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 86 votes
    Genres: Comedy, Satire
    Publisher's Summary:
What's been getting Dave Barry all worked up lately? What can possibly induce him to rise up - yes, actually out of his chair - in indignation? Well, lots of things. For instance: the plague of low-flow toilets; day trading and other careers that never require you to take off your bathrobe; the parent-misery quotient of school science fairs; pine-sap transfusions for tired Christmas trees; the real skinny on the IRS; Donald Trump; the airlines; and so much more.
    Members Reviews:
    Funny writing, awful narrator
I love Dave Barry, but this reader is one of the worst I have ever heard. His voice and inflection are incredibly annoying. I recommend "I'll mature when I'm dead" which Barry narrates himself. I wish Barry had narrated all of his books. Not all authors are skillful readers, but Barry is. This reader is terrible. I am halfway through and tempted to get it in print instead.
    Highly amusing.
This book was my first exposure to Dave Barry. As with most of his books, this is a collection of columns and essays originally published in various magazines and newspapers. Here, his topics range from the inconvenience of low-flow toilets to back to school shopping to Thanksgiving Dinner to medicine comercials that don't really explain what the medicine is supposed to treat. I think my favorite ones though are the two essays discussing Barry's French vacation, where he discusses the American inability to blend into the Parisian cafe scene due to being unable to convincingly pronounce the French R, which he describes as the "secret French code letter."
Narrator Dick Hill does a surprisingly good job with this. I'd only been exposed to him thanks to the Magic Kingdom of Landover books, but he has a good voice for humorous reading as well. He had me laughing almost hard enough to pee my pants during the aforementioned French parts. Definitely worth the credit I spent on it.
    Hilarious!
I loved this book. I listened to it with my teenage daughter from Amarillo, Texas all the way to Oregon. We laughed alot! What a wonderful and light book.

    Publisher's Summary:
The author describes his audiobook as a simple audiobook from a simple mind: Stephen Colbert's. In plain conversational language, not to mention the occasional grunt and/or whistle, Stephen explains his take on the most pressing concerns of our culture: faith, family...hygiene.
Why now? Stephen fears America has lost its balls and he hopes to re-ballify us...even the ladies. Ladies can have balls: lady-balls too. Stephen likes to call those "Thatchers". Stephen will show how he got his mammoth swinging sack with tales of courage and vital documents from his own life, including the Mother's Day card he made at age six, disputed credit-card bills, and putt-putt score cards - all the major milestones.

    Funny, but disappointing.
As a long fan of the Daily Show, and the Colbert Report, I was excited to see that the Daily Show team had made the book "America The Book". I downloaded the audio and have since listened to it dozens of times. I was, is, and always will be, overwhelmingly funny. So when I saw that Colbert had released his own version of a comedic audiobook, I didn't hesitate. To be fair, the book is entertaining, more entertaining I think if you have not seen too much of the Colbert Report show. But it falls way short of the comedic genius that was "America the book". It is my opinion that the Colbert character, while funny, is best served in doses with other characters mixed in. The thing that made "America the book" so good was the collaboration of the various Daily Show comedians, Stewart, Colbert, Bee, Black, Cordery, etc. "I am america" is basically Colbert in a monologue with a few interruptions, it consists of a rehashing of much of Colberts hilarious stereotypes of a right winger into book form. If you think the Colbert Report is better than the Daily Show, this book is definitely for you, buy it now! Personally, I have always preferred the more balanced comedy that only Stewart and his team or comedic personas can create.
Love it or hate it , no middle.
Rarely do I read reviews with so bimodal a distribution of reviews and stars.
    Love it or hate it.
    I laughed till I hurt.
    My wife finds it silly/offensive.
If you like the Colbert Repor' you will find it a lively dose of Steve in a different method of delivery.
If you find Steve Colbert's style of irreverence, cynicism, disrespect for any and everything funny buy it and enjoy and laugh. The art of laughing at ourselves, our society and our way of life is his forte.
If you find Mr. Colbert's style of humor tasteless or tiring or too cynical move on and keep shopping.
    I loved it.
    Where is the rest?
I too bought the book as soon as it was avalible. It is a great listen. My only problem with the book is it is abridged. I would like to have had the option of the unabridged version of this very funny book.
    Not good for listening
This book might be a good read but it is not good for listening.
    Scuba Lessons
2 of my friends and I listened to this book while we drove to Scuba lessons. As much fun as the scuba lessons were, we had the drive to look forward to also. Of course I'm the hero since I paid for it. If I have any complaint: there is just not enough Colbert on Audible. More Colbert, Sarah Silverman, and Jon Stewart. If you like this get the interviews on Fresh Aire with Terry Gross.

    Critic Reviews:
"A welcome reprieve from common tiptoeing around the fraught subjects of race relations and immigration." (Publishers Weekly)

    Good but long
It is extremely funny, but some of the stuff is repeated a couple of times. I had planned to listen to it on a 10hour drive and was happy to have another audiobook downloaded to the ipod.
    Reading Butchers Spanish and Spanglish
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes. I do not like the strong language, however, it does provide a lot of good information.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
There are two narrators. They both butcher the Spanish and Spanglish. It is hard to listen to and not nearly as funny as it would be if someone who knew how to pronounce things were to narrate the book.
    Initially hilarious, clearly disasterous
Initially incredibly funny. I was quite pleased with the obvious background and even research that had been done. The first section contains many educational tidbits. Very regretably soon there after, the book deteriorates into very inappropriate language and repeated base narrative involving body parts. The language for the most part contained explitives in every other sentence. Sadly, this is not a book to share with the family or that can be recommended. It's sad because this book could have been very funny and very valuable in the educational potential the name bears. If audible had a return policy, this one would go back.

    Poor shooting at easy targets
This is a disappointment. Easy shots with a few so so risky 'fucks' and 'cunts' thrown in just to try and prove that they are not just what in fact they are, tame middle-class 'radicals' who think that attacking easy establishment targets makes them right-on and cutting-edge...just boring crap I'm afraid and not in the least funny...no laughs at all, just an embarassment.
    Like Grumpy Old Men
This was a nice listen to. Nothing fantastic but did make me laugh a number of times. If you like 'Grumpy Old Men' then this will be the type of thing that you should like. Yes lots of swearing but I liked it, well placed im my opinion. It seems that the people reading the book are the 2 guys from Green Wing. This is not going to win any prizes for book of the decade but I would recommend it.
    Oh! What a pity!
Just listening to the Play Sample was enough for me. It reminded me of a bad Rik Mayall script from Bottom. I think this Book could have been amusing if tackled intelligently.
    This book certainly is
I'll give it one star for the title, which summarises the quality of this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
That's the premise of this hilarious new primer-style book in which George, Laura, and the entire Bush family communicate with uncharacteristic expressiveness, conveying shades of feeling and nuances of meaning that plain old English can't deliver--by peppering their conversation with Yiddishisms. Like all good primers, Yiddish with George and Laura tells a simple story and, in the end, important life lessons are imparted.
    Members Reviews:
    Fun way to learn Yiddish
As a aspirant to Yiddish mastery, you wonder what is the best way to learn it. There are text books with cumbersome vocabulary lists, and remembering everything seems insurmountable. Other books are in English with Yiddish words. Because they have humorous themes, they make the more scholarly books less ominous.
This book is a story about President George Bush and his wife Laura. It features the President's mother Barbara, as well as various Washington dignitaries. In one place, the President says, "I'm going upstairs. I'm going to take a 'shluf' (or nap)."
Yiddish has been considered to be a dead language, but words have crept into popular usage, chutzpah, finagler, goyim (gentile), and schlamazel.
This is a fun book. It's better than memorizing vocabulary lists.
One of the best cheap gifts for a yiddishe friend
I've bought this book many times as an amazing and cheap gift. The politicians references are a little dated, but the Yiddish, the political views, and the humor are still perfect.
    You've Gotta be a "Leftie...."
Even tho' George and Laura are no longer in the White House, one day i needed a good laugh, so i bought this. I had gotten "Yiddish with Dick and Jane" and was curious what the authors would do w/"W" and Wifey.
'Enjoyed the humor, and the dictionary in the back of the book was worth the ENTIRE book it was so funny!!!!
Buy it, and if you are a Left Winger, add a sixth star.
    A very FUNNY Book
This Book was a Present to one of my Family members.
The Book "Yiddish with George and Laura",
was a big hit! The Smile on the face tells the whole story.
I had been searching for awhile to find this book.
It was delivered in plenty of time for it's Christmas presentation.
    Thank you Amazon!
    Dennis.

gave it to a Jewish friend, he loved it!! Folks who are fluent in Yiddish will appreciate this book.

    A Goldmine
I found this book a delightful read. My favorite part- and it's not easy to choose, was the hilariously informative section on how to be a good guest. Make no mistake, the content is not just great satire, but an actual handbook on how to give a successful party. The included pdf files of the recipes mentioned are the icing on the cake.
Ms. Sedaris gives useful tips I have never heard or seen anywhere else. Her narration is top notch and a treat in itself. I can't wait for her next effort!
This is the book you will give for the Holidays.
    Hilarious
I listened to this book on a long flight to Hawaii. Amy's strangeness and humor is a precious gift to a world that takes itself too seriously.

you have to have a sense of humor...
If you don't have a sort of off the wall sense of humor, you may not find this funny, I on the other hand, found myself laughing out loud at the park with my earbuds firmly implanted in my ears so that I probably looked like a crazy person. I found it to be extremely funny.....

i really like this. being a black british woman, i dont suppose it was aimed at me, but i found it very funny. enjoyed it a lot
    Fab!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't get any better than "Phone calls from Jewish mothers." Please keep in mind that this is a book written by Jews for Jews, and some segments may offend extremely devout born-again Christians. This Christian, however, loved it and hopes to someday get a chance to see the Broadway show. (Skip through the truly infantile chapter regarding human excrement- proof that Brian and Sam didn't let their mothers read the first draft before sending it off to the publisher. The rest of the book is great.)
I was hoping for good or light hearted humor - NOT
I was really disapointed to say the least. I found it silly - dumb. Listening to a real bad comedy with little substance, and really poor material. Just not worth the time to listen and at some point I had to turn it off. It just wasn't funny or amusing to me. I would not recommend this to anyone, and not recommend it as a gift. I'd skip it. It was unfortunate, as I was really hoping for some good ol Jewish laughter. They were the only ones laughing, and I'm not sure what was so funny.
