If you could sum up Freaks I've Met in three words, what would they be?

Hilarious first person account of a young man from the Pacific NW who is determined to prove to his awful neighbor lady that he is a force to be recokoned with.

What did you like best about this story?

Narrator was spot on perfect, echoing stereotypes of modern America.

What a fabulous story about LIFE, making a living, LOVE and friendship and never let the freaks you meet get you down! DONALD JANS is a genius and love his fun narration!!!! Read the book and so enjoyed the audio version as well! I also love that I could listen whether I had only a few minutes or more time and was able to get right into the story. HIGHLY recommend!!

Humorous, Fun and Educational

I very much enjoyed how this book took the tone of speaking directly to a modern woman, instead of simply pumping out a multitude of facts.

It is rare to learn and be entertained - this book accomplishes both, without talking down to you.

Interesting and funny but, at times, repetitive

I enjoyed the book and can understand the choice for the narrator's tone but it became repetitive listening to her snippy comments. The point I most enjoyed was when she seemed to slip out of the Victorian character to express her disgust at one of the time's leading 'scientists'.

Every woman should have this book!!

Hilarious and Disturbing

Very interesting read, spares no details. Prose is a little over-the-top but lots of fun!

I've been an Audible monthly member since 2000. That's almost 18 years of a book subscription. There are a very small handful that I return to, and THIS book has just shot to the top of that list. The trick to sidesplitting humor is cleverly finding and communicating certain truths. Our dear writer must've been in knots throughout the writing of this book. Her caustic wit expresses itself in such a way that illustrates absurdity PERFECTLY! The performer has proven herself to be the ideal match to this writer. Her inflections are spot on, and had me cracking up on a regular basis. If you've EVER thought that the 19th century was a romantic, dreamy era to live in, this will change your mind. I have no doubt that I've missed parts, so I'll be going back to make sure I catch everything. Again... and again... and again...

One of the best!

This audio book was genius. Think of it like one of the books for dummies. It was written like Willam was talking to a normal person. The tile does what it says Willam teaches you how to suck less. In my personal opinion the company The Great Courses should get Willam to do a full lecture series.

Actually Really Great

If you could sum up Suck Less in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining and Useful.

I admit I wasn't ever a huge Willam fan, I really only bought this book because I had a bunch of credits and had several long flights ahead of me. He seemed like an affected LA queen, but wow. This book explains a lot about his wit and influences. Sometimes you have to be really smart to seem stupid.

What did you like best about this story?

Very approachable, he's got a cutting humor but it doesn't ostracize you.

I have gone back several times to relisten to chapters for actual pointers about life, love and sex.

What about Willam Bellis performance did you like?

Very Conversational, you can relisten to it because it's like he's just talking to you.

No, I have other stuff to do.

the voiced glossary with Courtney and Alaska was hilarious. Generally a very real survival guide that covers all of your bases.

The ONLY self help book you need!

I've been DYING for Willam to write a book ever since episode 1 of season 4 of RPDR! His blunt and frighteningly insightful brand of humor only comes from people who have been around the block. But this book took me by surprise. It's not just some entertainting piece of fluff. There's REAL advice from someone who has been there, done that, and has their face and hot bod on the t-shirt! I could go on for days about why this is an incredible book, but you just need to experience it for yourself! I would say that we need more people like Willam, but you can't duplicate a flawless, one of a kind, like her!

Loved it

I have read/listened to/watched every installment of this series with the exception of this book. I must admit, going in I was skeptical; knowing it had been written after Mad About The Boy... .but I truly lived it. the same endearing feeling was kept in this book and the author managed to leave it open for the final book to be made. I still cheered along, I still talked to myself as Bridget would....and I still hoped for her and Darcy's happy ending. Well done Mrs. Fielding

The movie is better!

I was really afraid to hear the audio book because I loved the movie so much. What if the book tainted the movie or tainted my perception of a character? It's like when you found out about Mark Darcy in the third book ... that was a horrible day.

Verdict: I love the movie. I like the book. I don't know if I favor the movie instead of the book because the movie came out first but I really enjoyed the movie's story line. Patrick Dempsey's character was a breathe of fresh air. (The movie did follow some of the events and conversations in the book.)

"Bridget Jones's Baby: The Diaries" was a pleasant listen. I found myself laughing at times and hating Daniel as much as I did before. I'm still having a hard time believing though that Bridget would sleep with Daniel again after all that he put her through, not to mention what he put Mark Darcy through. I finished the audio book in an afternoon, while I was working on a work document (because the audio book is an easy listen - you don't need to be a genius to follow the story line while you're doing something else.)

What a fun and sweet follow up!

Every now and then I like to rotate fun reading with more intense material and this story was great fun to listen to and relax with. I've read Mad About the Boy and I wasn't keen on it but now I think that was only because there was a missing link. Here it is. Makes sense of the last book published on Bridget Jones character.

If anyone saw the movie version it isn't too far off the book. They were both light entertainment.

Narration was good, flowed easily and spunky.

Must read for all Americans

Especially northern liberals. I'm a college-educated middle class liberal woman from small town New England and this book called me out on my bullshit, most of which I was completely unaware. The authors are first and foremost funny AF. They are also intelligent, informed, self-deprecating, fiercely proud and brutally honest. And hearing their own voices has helped to dispel my preconceptions associated with the Southern accent. In fact, these smart-talking boys sound sexy as hell! More important, their message must be heeded by the American "left," which judging from 2016 election needs to come down from its high horse and get some correctly fitting britches. I sincerely hope the Liberal Rednecks can help pull Dixie out of the dark, but they have already succeeded in shining a light for this Yankee.

Read this if you are a "City Liberal"

Don't confuse this book with the typical redneck satirists like Larry The Cable Guy or Jeff Foxworthy ("you know you're a redneck when..."). Reading this book is like spending time with "real" legitimate southern rednecks who are normal people just like you and me, but see the world from an entirely different perspective. If you were at all surprised that Donald Trump won the US election, then you need to read this book. This book is a must read for all "city liberals" who don't understand what is going on outside of urban America. This book will set you free...and make you laugh out loud.

My favorite thing about this book, besides the reminders of all the things I too loved as a child, from Barbies to horses, was that the author narrated the book. She did her own high school cheers and sang the fight song! I enjoyed going through the memories with Lee St. John.

St. John is a southern woman, born and raised, and her books are written vignette style. When I met her at an author event earlier this year I asked her what motivated her to write her books and she happily told me that these were stories that someday her children would want to know, even if they didn't yet. She is a vivacious and energetic retired teacher, who quite draws that light. She is a woman that brings air into the room, a woman who never met a stage that didn't adore her.

I started listening early this morning and laughed all through the morning routine of reordering my home after the slack weekend. Her vignette's are written as she speaks, with energy and excitement and it's a quick journey through the treasures of her closet. Half way through her litany of practical jokes, fabulous adventures, and cock-eyed memories I felt like I had travelled her life with her.

Yes, her vignettes shape to tell the story of her life, but what I loved even more, was the story they told of being Southern. I am a transplant to the south and there are many things down here that are different from where I grew up. There is a pride in the south, of being Southern the St. John captures in vivid strokes. She's a storyteller along the lines of Lewis Grizzard. I could absolutely see her work serialized in the newspaper. It's a quick read, and enjoyable, expect to want to share some of the tales yourself, or better yet, invite the author to your next luncheon and she'll keep you all entertained.

A timely book about a Swing State - Election 2000?

What made the experience of listening to Best. State. Ever. the most enjoyable?

I loved how he started off, "What makes people think, ' What's up with Florida?' I think it all started with the Election of 2000. All the other states seemed to know who they'd voted for. But Florida,....." ,..ever since then other states love to publish strange news stories about us." But I love my state."

I laugh at all of Dave Barry's books.

I would have preferred if Dave Barry had read his own book.

I visited Florida in the 90's /rented a car to explore, like Barry suggested.. Parts were very nostalgic. (The Keys are beautiful - like the Caribbean, Hemmingway's house with moss-covered trees like the Deep South, etc.)

I started to fall asleep last night listening to the "Lock and Load" machine gun firing range, for the public. I couldn't believe they'd let my friend's 11 year old try one when they visited there. So I want to listen more to see if it's true.

Funny but not side splitting

Still had moments where I laughed out loud. But he focuses too much on and bad language which I did not enjoy.

A fun, romp through the Sunshine State

Dave Barry has done it again. With high humor, this book takes us through some of Floridas lesser-known riches such as a town of fortune tellers, pre-Disney attractions and a Greek sponging town. Along the way, we get Key West and Miami Beach but only as Dave Barry can write it. I will make it my business to visit some of these places. Thanks Dave!

funny and entertaining

I enjoyed this book it was a very entertaining tour of Florida. would definitely recommend it to Dave Barry fans.

Not for me

I tried this because the summary seemed interesting. No one on audible had reviewed the book yet but everyone on Amazon gave it an excellent review. I cannot see what the Amazon readers found so interesting. I found Julia Greenfield to be a busy body who would not respect her aunt's home. I could not find or remember the details enough even though I finished the book.

Don't waste your time.

Could have been so much more...

Great idea for a novel that had so many possibilities but just kind of fell flat. I was hoping for laugh out loud moments that just never came. Very slow, very hard to get through.

Too descriptive, bad story

Couldn't finish this one, the story was super slow and ever single detail was over described which is not what I prefer.

Mildly Annoying

I found this novel mildly annoying for several reasons: I didnt like the protagonist, Julia Greenfield, a self-absorbed 26-year-old intent on losing her virginity who makes a series of disastrously bad choices during a summer living with her maiden aunt in Durham, N.C., and I didnt wholly accept the premise that a reasonably attractive, socially adjusted (if shallow) woman would, four years out of college, still have her virginity to lose. I liked her a little better at the end, after she comes to terms with herself and finally succeeds in achieving her goal (with a somewhat feckless but likable-enough colleague from work).

Such a boring story!

The whole time I was waiting for something to happen, something spectacular, funny or sad, anything really...

This book is not a light-hearted read, but also lacks any depth to call it intense or gripping.
