I Fell Asleep 3 Times Reading this âTHRILLERâ 2Â stars
Well, the best I can say about this book is that it certainly illustrates the tedium, dead ends, misunderstandings, disrespect and difficulties police put up with during a complex investigation that apparently has no clues. Again, weâre dealing with the lowest dregs of society, though Steel does try to get help for a family that needs it. And that useless profiler is absent.
It seemed a long dull exercise in futility for most of the book until Geraldine finally wraps up the case. DI Steelâs personal life is still absolute garbage. She drinks too much, feels lonely and cries a lot, but doesnât take any dating advice. She does get to meet her semi-conscious, heavily medicated mother for a few unfulfilling minutes.
The search for her mother has been the only thing that kept me reading the series, and now our DI has to search for someone else, if she can bother. Fortunately, I only have one more to read in this over-rated and depressing series, plus the first Ian Peterson book and I can write Russell off.
Also the author is incorrect about most of the differences between a diamond and zirconia. Diamond is an excellent thermal conductor and zirconia actually has more fire than diamond, though it is not as brilliant and lacks depth. In fact even faceted glass reflects colours. I noticed that at 10-y-o, playing with a âbegemmedâ plastic hairclip during an interminable outdoor assembly.
I really canât understand how any author can torture herself at the computer writing such hopeless brain-numbing drivel for 320 pages.
Kept Me Guessing Throughout
A mahoosive thanks to No Exit Press and Leigh Russell for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read by the author, although ashamedly I admit I have a few other of her books waiting patiently on my TBR. #MyBad
The Murder Ring is part of the Geraldine Steel series and I have to say, although it can be read as a stand alone ~ there were times throughout this book where I felt I would have had a better understanding had I read the previous books in the series.
The plot was relatively fast-paced and kept me guessing throughout. The themes of revenge, loss, anger and the past affecting the future were interwoven through the chapters. There were various characters that strengthened the story-line, one such being Sam. I really enjoyed the banter that flowed between Sam and Geraldine despite the seriousness of the case. For me, it made the characters all the more relate-able. There also seemed to be some new characters introduced âthe new DCI : Adam Eastwood who sounded like he may have been a bit of âeye candyâ!! Phwoar!
I have to admit, I was slightly surprised when the murderer was revealed, and if I am honest, I am not sure I found the motivation behind the killing all that believable â but that is just my opinion and it certainly did not take away from the story at all.
