Cookie Chanel has a passion for fashion - and a murder mystery to solve!
Cookie Chanel has opened her own vintage clothing boutique, It's Vintage, Y'all, in the charming town of Sugar Creek, Georgia. Always on the lookout for stylish second-hand steals, she attends the estate sale of deceased socialite Charlotte Meadows. But she gets a lot more than she bargained for when Charlotte's ghost appears before her - offering fashion advice and begging Cookie to find out who murdered her. As the persistent poltergeist tags along and a possibly psychic pussycat moves into the shop, Cookie sorts through racks of suspects to see who may be hiding some skeletons in the closet. Do a clothing store owner and a disembodied socialite have a ghost of a chance of collaring a killer - or will Cookie's life be the next one hanging by a thread?

wrong narrator makes this difficult to listen to
This is a fun idea for a light, chic-lit novel. It has a lot of the right ingredients to be a charming, undemanding read. I love the aspect of the vintage clothes, which is why I bought the book. The fantasy of a vintage clothing shop and an almost instantly successful internationally read blog is enticing-unrealistic enough to be clearly fiction but delightful enough to be engrossing. The characters are the same in that they are unrealistic but delightful and charming. The problem is the reader. I feel bad about saying this, because she has a pleasant voice, knows her material and reads with enthusiasm. However, all the characters in the book are from the deep south, the book is set in the deep south, and the book is written in what I can only describe as a southern frame of mind and pattern of thought and speech. It was critical to it's success as an audio book that the reader be able to communicate that successfully. Had they chosen Peggity Price, for example, as the reader, I think I would have really enjoyed it, but this reader just wasn't up to the task. Thus, a lot of the humor is lost, and the story just doesn't flow like it should. I wasn't able to finish it because I found the interpretation so annoying. This won't bother everyone, of course, but for me it's a fatal flaw to what might have been a charming audiobook.
    Cute lightheaded listen!
I loved the narration of Charlotte, I felt like I could close my eyes & see her & all her sass. The story is charming and cute, easy to follow. An all around cozy read. Grab a warm cup of coffee & curl up with this one!
unfriendly and unlikable protagonist ruins book
What did you like best about If You've Got It, Haunt It? What did you like least?
The story had a naive charm and a quiet country atmosphere which, coupled with the sprinkling of fashion references and tips, makes for a fun setting for a lighthearted murder mystery.
What was most disappointing about Rose Presseys story?
The main character is surprisingly angry, antagonistic and unlikable. She immediately take a dislike to the ghost, who is friendly and keen to not only solve her own murder but help the protagonist with her business and love life.

Amory is determined to prove his innocence and find the real killer. As the stakes grow higher and the line between friend and foe becomes less clear, Amory must decide where her heart lies and catch the killer before she, too, becomes a victim.
    Critic Reviews:
"This debut novel by a librarian lays the foundation for a stylish series with Milo and Amory channeling Nick and Nora Charles." (Booklist)
"Fans of plucky female amateur sleuths will welcome Amory Ames, the heroine of Weaver's pleasing debut set in 1932 England... the affable Amory could carry a series." (
    Publishers Weekly)
"A witty and charming debut mystery with a believably spunky sleuth and a compelling story of love that never runs smoothly." (G.M. Malliet, Agatha Award-winning author of the St. Just, and Max Tudor mysteries)

    Horrible Narration
I bought this book because it was an Edgar nominee for best novel or best first novel. Also looking for something like The Royal Spyness mysteries. Big Mistake. This lady keeps pausing or putting the periods behind each word, like she is reading from a paper where she hasn't practice her speech. Annoying. I can't take it. I returned.
    worst narrator ever
Would you try another book from Ashley Weaver and/or Billie Fulford-Brown?
honestly, i couldn't listen to more than 3 minutes of this person reading. i have no idea about the story. the narrator made me want to run away from my phone.
Would you recommend Murder at the Brightwell to your friends? Why or why not?
    no. un-listenable-to
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Billie Fulford-Brown?
    anyone
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    not sure.
    Good mystery, horrible narration
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend the book to anyone who likes Agatha Christie type mysteries - but in book format, not audio. It's not the best or most gripping mystery, but if you like the genre it's a pleasant read.
If youve listened to books by Ashley Weaver before, how does this one compare?
    1st one
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator over pronounced her lines, made strange pauses and inflections, and gave annoying voices to many of the characters. Enough to make me want to stop listening to the story.
Did Murder at the Brightwell inspire you to do anything?
Write a review. I don't do that often, but I bought the book despite another reviewer's comments about the narration and deciding to add my hearty agreement when it really was so stilted that it detracted from the story.
The narrator ruined this book for me.
What did you love best about Murder at the Brightwell?
The story was cute and kept moving.

    Narrator: Samuel Gillies
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-18-14
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 135 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Unhealed scars of the Great War still torment Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge. A haunted, damaged shell of a man, he has been sent to the small coastal town of Hampton Regis to solve a violent crime and to confront his own tragic past.
An officer who served with Rutledge in the trenches of France before being sent back to England under suspicious circumstances has now been accused of savagely beating the husband of the woman he still loves. The suspect has taken the wife hostage, threatening to kill her and her maid unless Rutledge takes charge of the investigation.
Although the case painfully mirrors Rutledge's own past and the love he lost to another man, he cannot refuse it. When the unconscious, brutalized victim vanishes without a trace, it's clear that this peaceful little town hides a vicious murderer and secrets powerful enough to kill for.

NOT ONE OF TODD'S BEST EFFORTS
I love the Inspector Ian Rutledge series but sometimes Charles Todd drops the ball. That's the case here. Nothing about this story makes any sense. Why would Scotland Yard waste valuable resources by sending one of its best detectives to a small country village at the demand of some guy holding two women hostage? Especially since he's unlikely to hurt one of them because he publicly professes a great love for the married woman? While the book has the usual Todd unexpected plot twists, the whole thing just goes on too long. Rutledge is allowed entry into the house several times, yet he never makes a move to overcome the kidnapper. He even allows food to be delivered after several days instead of starving them out. IF anyone can deal with this improbable story, the book should be abridged since so much of it adds nothing to plot line. Also, narrator Samuel Gilles is no where near as good as Simon Prebble who has done most of the Charles Todd works that I've enjoyed. Gilles' Scottish burr for Rutledge's nemesis, Hamish, is so over the top that half of the time I couldn't understand him, Plus Gilles does nothing with the other characters - they all meld together, sounding alike, making the dialogue hard to follow. Definitely not worth the price of admission.
    Very good with surprise ending
Charles Tood does it again. Didn't see the ending coming. very surprising. I would recommend this book to everyone.
    Good Despite The Improbable Plot
I'm a fan so I enjoyed this one, but rolled my eyes more than once at the author's choices for plot progression!!!
Not even close to The Red Door or A Fine Summer's Day.
    Another great listen
Great story filled with well written characters and a fabulous performance, just as I have come to expect from Charles Todd.
Situation not plausible but still a great listen
A hostage situation with no effort to subdue the hostage taker in spite of countless opportunities? Maybe back in those days this would have not seemed absurd?
Nevertheless, the mystery kept me intrigued and I spent a lot of time just sitting and listening to find out what was going to happen, which is unusual for me - I usually just listen to audio books when driving, walking or doing chores.
The characters were well developed and interesting as was the plot if you are willing to overlook the unreasonable set up.

    Publisher's Summary:
Agnes Barton is not your typical senior citizen living in Tadium, MI, on the shores of Lake Huron. She drives a red hot Mustang, shops at Victoria's Secret, rankles local police officials, and has a knack for sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. What does a murder that happened forty-three years ago have to do with missing tourist Jennifer Martin? Agnes makes it her personal mission to find out, and she's not letting the fact she's seventy-two get in the way. Butting heads with Sheriff Clem Peterson is something she's accustomed to, but lately Clem seems to be acting even more strange, making Agnes wonder what he may be hiding ala the Martin disappearance. Agnes' partner in crime, Eleanor Mason tags along, Watson to her Holmes. Together, they unearth clues. If only Eleanor would behave, as although lovable, she has a knack for getting into trouble by tangling with her rival, Dorothy Alton, or flirting with anyone - male or female - and gossiping! She's incorrigible, but she does carry a Pink Lady revolver in her purse, one that has proved useful at times. Life for Agnes and Eleanor is shaken up when Agnes' former boss and secret crush comes to Tadium. Before long, the lady sleuths have more on their hands to contend with as goons roll into town and bullets begin to fly.

    "UNBELIEVEABLE"
I thought this book would be a fun light listen. Like the MudBug series or a Molly Harper book. But it was diffucult to finish. The attempts at humor were lacking humor, at best. The plot was weak. And the conculsion felt rushed. I kept thinking, did I skip a part?
And the narrator should not attempt to perform voice changes. It sounded like a grandmother trying to do voices for a child's bedtime story. Really, one expects a professional reader to have more range ability. This is not a series that I will continue.
    Bit different
Not your average sleuth story. Grandmas take on a serious case in a funny way. Good basis for a nice series.
    jumpy and nonsensical
the only reason I kept going with this book is that it was an audio book and I didn't need to physically read it. the main character's behavior was erratic and contradictory. the narrator's voice was dull.
A fun read with some dark parts
First, this is a spoof. So of course, much of the humor is over-the-top. That being said, be careful not to eat or drink while listening to this one, or you will need to keep a towel handy (or someone who knows how to do the Heimlich). Yes, some of the parts relating to the murders, and the dangers that Agnes gets into are quite disturbing, and unless you have had a 93 year old female relative who rode around in her truck with a shotgun mounted for easy release to provide "instant roadkill", you might find some of the situations wholly improbable. But I did have that relative, so all I had to do was imagine her and LMFAO! No plot recap, that was done by publisher, but expect lots of plot twists.

Disabled in California's war for independence, Ted is locked out of the new tech. Living on the fringes of society for years, he's found a way to turn his disability into cash: finding clients who need their info kept off the grid.
But when his daughter is accused of murdering her boyfriend - an agent in California's Secret Police - Ted has to dig himself out of the hole he's been in. To save his daughter, he ventures into a shadow world of underground hackers, high-end programmers, and renegade gear-heads, all of whom seem to have a stake in California's future.
It soon becomes clear it's about more than one dead agent. Solving the case might save his daughter. And it might get him killed. And it just might open the door to secrets surrounding the attack that almost killed him eighteen years before.

I HAD TO WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN
DO YOU WANT TO SEE ME DEPORTED TO ARIZONA
Just like THE GIRL AT THE END OF THE WORLD, this book enjoyed a push from Audible, that some much better books did not get. It premiered at the top of several lists and has been included in every sale available. The first three pages of reviews with the exception of one, praise the book for it's smarts and excitement. Once the readers got a hold of hit, it's rating sunk to 3.9, which is not good. The America presented does seem unique, but the story and lack of character development is boring. Some reviewers would lead you to think Noir means boring. My first Noir books, were James M. Cain, and those books are entertaining and exciting. This is the second Levesque book I have had to quit, there will not be a third.
    Good read
I loved the author's take on our digital future and the main character's analog style. I enjoyed the Steven Jay Cohen's performance even more the longer the book went.
Nice noir feel for a techno-mystery
This book is part Orwell's 1984, part Scalzi's Lock In (although this book came out before Lock In parts of it remind me of Lock In. I'm sure Lock In and this are not the only ones to have these elements to them anyway) and part... Crichton's Disclosure. Disclosure was the one with the virtual reality file storage system, wasn't it? Maybe a little ready Player One too, in terms of the dystopia where everyone is online all the time. Just without the 80's references.
Set in a world where everyone is connected to the internet semi permanently using something akin to Google Glass. Our hero, Lomax, is a war veteran private eye (aren't all private eyes war veterans?) who doesn't use the eyeware interface and prefer to do things old school.

    A burned-out L.A. detective...
A woman of mystery who is far more than she seems...
A grotesque, ancient monster bent on a mission of retribution...
When these three collide, a new standard of suspense is born. The legend of the Golem of Prague has endured through the ages, a creature fashioned by a 16th-century rabbi to protect his congregation, now lying dormant in the garret of a synagogue. But the Golem is dormant no longer.
Detective Jacob Lev wakes one morning, dazed and confused: He seems to have picked up a beautiful woman in a bar the night before, but he can't remember anything about the encounter, and before he knows it, she has gone. But this mystery pales in comparison to the one he's about to be called on to solve. Newly reassigned to a Special Projects squad he didn't even know existed, he's sent to a murder scene far up in the hills of Hollywood Division. There is no body, only an unidentified head lying on the floor of a house. Seared into a kitchen counter nearby is a single word: the Hebrew for justice. Detective Lev is about to embark on an odyssey - through Los Angeles, through many parts of the United States, through London and Prague, but most of all, through himself. All that he has believed to be true will be upended - and not only his world, but the world itself, will be changed.

    Very disappointing.
Would you try another book from Jonathan Kellerman and Jesse Kellerman and/or John Rubinstein?
I have read all the Jonathan Kellerman Dr.Delaware series.
If youve listened to books by Jonathan Kellerman and Jesse Kellerman before, how does this one compare?
I kept listening thinking it was going to get better and make more sense but it never did.
What about John Rubinsteins performance did you like?
It was his usual great job.
    Any additional comments?
This book was just a waste of my time. I'm usually patient with books developing a story line but this just wandered around and never answered any of the questions posed as it went along. I was afraid I was going to be disappointed at the end and I was, even more than I anticipated.
I should have paid attention to the reviews
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Better plot- it was too plodding and didn't make sense. Not at all what I expected from jonathan kellerman.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jonathan Kellerman and Jesse Kellerman again?
Jonathan Keller- absolutely. Love the Dr. Delaware series.
What three words best describe John Rubinsteins voice?
    Love his narration.
    Any additional comments?
Just that I wish I had paid more attention to the reviews. Audible readers provide great insight into the books. Great community of Audible readers.
Weird Biblical Connections and Mystical Happenings
What would have made The Golem of Hollywood better?
I don't care for mystical happenings, and this book's attempt at a conclusion relies on such beliefs.
Would you recommend The Golem of Hollywood to your friends? Why or why not?
NOT AT ALL. I don't know anyone that wants to read about a 500 year old bug that can morph into a seductively beautiful (& naked) woman that kills bad guys.
Which character as performed by John Rubinstein was your favorite?
John Rubinstein's performance was, as always, great.

"Best P.I. Novel" - Shamus Award finalist
In a "sophisticated international thriller" (The New York Times Book Review) from "a fresh voice in crime fiction" (Kirkus Reviews), antiques dealer turned PI Jim Brodie takes on an elusive group of killers hunting for a long-lost treasure with a dangerous history.
After wading through the tragedy of San Francisco's Japantown murders, struggling antiques dealer Jim Brodie is back in Japan for a well-earned vacation. But checking in at the PI firm Brodie inherited from his father, he immediately acquires a new case: a Japanese World War II veteran shows up and spins a dark story connected to the war and a pair of violent home invasions committed in Tokyo only days earlier.
Brodie agrees to provide protection for the old warrior, but soon an unexpected murder shocks him and his crew, and they begin a wild ride through the worlds of war atrocities, Japanese kendo clubs, the backstreets of Yokohama's unfathomable Chinatown, and Chinese spies. With the crusty PI Noda at his side, Brodie pokes around where he's not wanted, and when a friend is delivered up to him in pieces, Brodie is once again running for his life - while seeking the answers he needs to save it.
Barry Lancet "imbues Tokyo Kill with a vivid sense of Japan, from sections of Tokyo that only a native would know about the meticulous research into the country's history and legends.... Lancet hit the ground running...with his superb debut, Japantown, and continues that winning streak with Tokyo Kill" (The New York Times/AP).

Would you listen to Tokyo Kill again? Why?
Probably. There is so much going on with no lulls that if you're not paying attention you can easily miss something.
What about Scott Bricks performance did you like?
Scott Brick narrated flawlessly. Since he is one of my two favorite narrators my opinion is slightly biased.
    Any additional comments?
This is such a thrilling book! It's like reading something by Eisler and Berry with a little Russell Blake thrown in for fun. You have these murders committed by this gang of bad guys trying to make it look like another gang who are trying to make it look like someone else altogether? Then there are these bad guys who maybe aren't so bad, or maybe they're the good ones? Don't forget the good guys, or are they? Or is there a woman behind it all? I wouldn't want to spoil this work for anyone but of you're reading my review get the book, Audible has a guarantee but if you're anything like me you will not need it, this is one book worthy of your time and credit. I just can't say enough, take my word, get the book and please leave me some kind of feedback so I know if other people liked it as much as I do. Right now I'm off to get the first in the series and can't wait for the next.
    Superb action thriller!
First, thanks to listener Shelley, who I follow, for her review which led me to Tokyo Kill. This is one of several novels which her reviews led me to purchase.
There is a lot of Japanese and Chinese history included in this action thriller.
