    Title: Miami Blues
    Subtitle: Hoke Moseley, Book 1
    Author: Charles Willeford
    Narrator: Stephen Bowlby
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-24-14
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 25 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
After a brutal day investigating a quadruple homicide, Detective Hoke Moseley settles into his room at the un-illustrious Eldorado Hotel and nurses a glass of brandy. With his guard down, he doesn't think twice when he hears a knock on the door. The next day, he finds himself in the hospital, badly bruised and with his jaw wired shut. He thinks back over 10 years of cases, wondering who would want to beat him into unconsciousness, steal his gun and badge, and most importantly, make off with his prized dentures. But the pieces never quite add up to revenge, and the few clues he has keep connecting to a dimwitted hooker, her ex-con boyfriend, and the bizarre murder of a Hare Krishna pimp.
Chronically depressed, constantly strapped for money, always willing to bend the rules a bit, Hoke Moseley is hardly what you'd think of as the perfect cop, but he is one of the greatest detective creations of all time.

    Proof it can be done!
Where does Miami Blues rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is my first book by this author and it won't be my last. Based on my last few books, I didn't think it was possible for an author to write an engaging and often humorous detective story with out being beat up by crude language. Mr. Willeford uses a few choice words here and there but they are appropriate for the character and the setting; however, it isn't over kill.
What did you like best about this story?
It was enjoyable listen and kept my attention. It was a bit drawn out at the end but not so bothersome I would take away a star.
Stephen Bowlby was brilliant as always. In fact, I found this book because I searched for other books he has narrated.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I don't listen or read any book in one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
I choose all my books based on reviewers comments so I really appreciated the comments about this book.

There were two bodies buried under the handball courts at the Bondi baths. The man to get them out? Major Garrick Lewis, aka, The Gecko. With Norton for company, The Gecko literally took Bondi, and everything that went with it, in stride - Mossad hit squads, the KGB, ASIO, yobbo builders and loose women looking for action. It's Christmas Day in the sleepy town of Sorenson, Wisconsin, but instead of unwrapping presents, deputy coroner Mattie Winston is at the burnt remains of a house where a charred body has been found. The victim is none other than Jack Allen - a paraplegic who recently won a huge casino jackpot. Upon closer inspection, Mattie and detective Steve Hurley are convinced Jack was murdered to steal his winnings, giving the phrase blackjack a whole new meaning.... But as Mattie investigates, even her cutting-edge forensic skills keep coming up short in a case with as many suspects as twists. After her odds-on-favorite turns up dead, Mattie and Hurley must race to find a killer before another victim cashes in his chips.

Mattie, Mattie, What are you doing?
A lot of reviewers were very annoyed by this book and the sheer number of stupid things Mattie manages to do in it. I agree it is frustrating behavior for someone we have been regarding as a smart woman. Also, I agree with others who say the amount of disasters in the book is really over the top. It reads more like an action movie that a mystery. But I certainly did enjoy parts very much. The Mattie and Hurley build up is a lot of fun, and there is a scene with a drunken Mattie that was priceless, despite the fact that the narrator is really bad at drunk voices. And if the book hasn't driven you mad by the end there is the up and down of the cliffhanger ending that had me starting the next book within five minutes of this one. But since this is a mystery I should say something about the mystery part. There are two deaths being investigated in the book, and I have to say I am not sure what the author was thinking with the secondary death. It was a downer and didn't showcase anything good about Mattie and Hurley (who I notice both seem to like to play bad cop and feel ok bullying anyone involved in any capacity with a suspicious death). The main mystery was better. Book definitely kept my interest throughout.
    DAM THOSE CLIFF HANGERS
I LOVE THIS SERIES, I JUST WANT HER TO WRITE FASTER. I LOVED EVANOVICH TOO, BUT SHE SEEMED TO LOOSE INTEREST IN THE LATER BOOKS. HERE'S HOPING THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN HERE
    humorous and fun
If it wasn't for bad luck, Mattie would have no luck at all. She and Hurley continue to figure out crimes and their relationship. However the crimes of Sorenson are no match to their relationship. This is a great read and I look forward to listening to the next book.
    Don't bother
I struggled to finished this book. The narrator was terrible and the story line was just not that captivating.
Protagonist is now a sad, stupid, pitiful whiner
Not recommending this one, it sounds like the writer has decided she hates her main character now. I'm so disappointed... First she makes her look more like an idiot than ever before, then she has her turn into a gambling addict and a reckless whiner who dumps her career without even talking to the man for whom she is quitting a job she loves? WTF? This wasn't fun, it was just sad and depressing. I'm hard pressed to read the next one but everyone has an off day (or book), right? We shall see...

All just another day in Serge Storms' sun-splashed paradise!
Thanks to the growth of the Internet, America finds itself plagued by a noxious epidemic of ruthless scam artists. Where do they all come from? If you guessed 110 percent of them are spawned in Florida, you win the cigar.
When a new digital scheme goes horribly awry - causing innocents to die and a young woman to go missing - only one person can set things right: obsessive Florida trivia buff and reluctant serial killer Serge Storms.
Aided by his perpetually addled sidekick, Coleman, and latter-day noir private eye Mahoney, Serge launches a crusade to rid his beloved state of predators and save the girl.
But Serge's mission is hampered by one pesky little detail: He's being tracked by a hit man dispatched from his murky past. And all bets are off when Serge learns the same assassin is responsible for killing the love of his life years ago. It's not long before the two begin tracking each other around Florida in a frenzied Mobius loop.
It's a dance only one can survive - it's the Tiger Shrimp Tango!

    More Miami Madness
As always, Oliver Wyman reads the hell out of Serge A. Storms' latest epic adventure. Nobody does Tim Dorsey better.
This isn't Shakespeare, except for his comedies.
Would you consider the audio edition of Tiger Shrimp Tango to be better than the print version?
Yes the narrator adds a lot to the story
What did you like best about this story?
Once one gets used to Serge Storm's character from other books, this one moves fast and in very unpredictable ways . (Just like Serge).
    Which scene was your favorite?
Any of the scenes involving Serge's "experiments" and his potential escapes.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
To laughter, yes, emotionally -- its not one of those touchy feely books.
    Any additional comments?
This was a GREAT book to listen to while on a caribbean beach with wind and water and fresh warm air.
    Red and Blue make Purple
Serge trying to find a middle ground between the Tea Partiers' and the Occupiers, you can guess how well that works. Johnny Vegas, the Accidental Virgin has a couple of appearances, and Serge wiping out an organized group of criminal scamers in his own special way. If you are a fan of Dorsey, what more could you ask for.
    Not up to expectations
I like the older stories and performance much better. This seems to be a retread.
A lover of the series: First Audiobook
this was my first audiobook in regards to the Serge series and I have to say it was difficult to adjust to the nasally voice of Serge. But the voice actor for this book was so incredibly talented. I mean everybody else's voice other than Serge was just fantastic to me. I think I just had a hard time adjusting because I read 7 volumes and created Serge's voice in my head. Even though the voice didn't match up and that was probably the most difficult part, the voice actor was incredibly committed to the character which brought Serge to life in my eyes or should I say my ears. I guess that's why I really enjoyed listening to this book because it was closer to a drama than a standard audiobook. if you're a fan of the Serge series and you're teetering like I was for months, that's not a joke, then I highly recommend this book.

Their feeling of connection is mutual, so Pam invites Jaine to join The PMS Club - a women's support group that meets once a week over guacamole and margaritas.
But joining the club proves to be more a curse than a blessing for Jaine. Though she is warned that Rochelle, the hostess, makes a guacamole to die for, Jaine never takes the warning literally. Until another PMS member, Marybeth, drops dead over a mouthful of the green stuff after confessing she is having an affair with Rochelle's husband.
While Rochelle and her husband are the obvious suspects, everyone at that night's meeting is under suspicion, including Jaine. So, instead of dishing dirt with The PMS Club, Jaine has to dig up dirt on the surviving members. And soon it becomes clear: someone in this club thinks getting away with murder should be a privilege of membership. . .

    A+++
This is the best book of the series so far. It is funny, witty and clever. Jane takes after her father in that they both get involved in cringe worthy but funny situations. I laughed out aloud as I listened to this book. The murder mystery developed slowly but picked up and moved fast. There were lots of red herrings to prevent guessing the killer. The narrator did a good job with all of the voices. I would recommend Laura Levine to anyone who like cozy mysteries. I'm off to download the next book in the series.
    Love this series!
I read the first few books in this series in print and switched to audiobook for this installment and I am glad I did. While I loved this series in print, the narrator for this series really adds and extra element. I love the mixture of humor and mystery in this series and look forward to each new book. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY
The yummiest kind of brain candy!
I consider this book (and series) "brain candy," akin to the whole Hamish MacBeth series, but what a delightful read when you want something with a little whodunit in it that will also make you laugh out loud. The protagonist, Jaine, is utterly charming and hapless, and the cast of characters that run throughout this series provide depth and comedy without appearing wooden or stereotypical. In my reading so far (I have almost all of Levine's books), there is always a murder, plenty of antics, and a few entertaining screwballs. This book won't give you high drama, particularly if you read the series (it's not always obvious who the "bad guy" is, but you can bet that they will be found out and the plot will be wrapped up in a neat little bow), but although some of the shenanigans seem a little formulaic they are written (and read) in a way that come across as hilarious anyway. Pressley is the perfect narrator for the voice of Jaine, and she also delivers on all of the other characters (male and female) in a way that is believable yet also maintains the humor of the situation. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a series of light-hearted cozy murder mysteries.
    love these stories
another great one in the series.

If St. Francis was in your city park,,,,
This is a lovely book about religious simplicity, an attempt to find holy things in lowly things, and an understanding of redemption. I'd read it years ago and still found it fabulous. One of my favorites.
    A great read
I've enjoyed many Laurie R King books including the Mary Russell stories , and the Folly stories. I'm very happy to be introduced to Kate Martinelli a San Francisco homicide detective. Although this is the second book in the series , it is the first one I have read, and I think it was a great one to start with. I love the quirky characters, and I'm impressed with the depth of knowledge of various sources including Shakespeare and the Christian Bible. All in all, another excellent read.
    Yawn
Very slow moving and boring book.
The only good thing I can say about the book is the person reading the book was ok.
The least interesting of Kings novels
Although well researched and written, I did not find the novel note worthy. Kings considerable talents are best realized in the Sherlock Holmes and young wife Russell series. In the later she excels in creating mystery from both male and female perspectives.
    entertaining
it's well written and narrator it's great. the story line is slow but gets better.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Rebus and Malcolm Fox go head-to-head when a 30-year-old murder investigation resurfaces, forcing Rebus to confront crimes of the past. Rebus is back on the force, albeit with a demotion and a chip on his shoulder. He is investigating a car accident when news arrives that a case from 30 years ago is being reopened. Rebus's team from those days is suspected of helping a murderer escape justice to further their own ends.
Malcolm Fox, in what will be his last case as an internal affairs cop, is tasked with finding out the truth. Past and present are about to collide in shocking and murderous fashion. What does Rebus have to hide? And whose side is he really on? His colleagues back then called themselves "The Saints," and swore a bond on something called the Shadow Bible. But times have changed and the crimes of the past may not stay hidden much longer -- and may also play a role in the present, as Scotland gears up for a referendum on independence.
Allegiances are being formed, enemies made, and huge questions asked. Who are the saints and who the sinners? And can the one ever become the other?
    Critic Reviews:
"Ian Rankin's latest Rebus mystery is stuffed full of multiple plotlines, but James MacPherson's pacing and various character voices keep the story rolling along with the listener hooked, and never confused. Rebus is once again an Edinburgh cop, thanks to a change in retirement policy, but at the cost of a demotion, which results in his former protégée, Siobhan Clarke, now outranking him. MacPherson's tones make clear that Rebus is still cranky and mischievously wayward while Clarke, who has less of a Scots brogue, is more controlled. MacPherson's fine performance includes gruff crooks, powerful businessmen, sleazy lawyers with stretched out syllables, and a slurring ex-police officer weakened by a stroke." (AudioFile)

    an old friend
Sometimes you get involved with a series where you know that when a new book comes out in the series that you will buy it and enjoy it. It's like seeing an old friend again, you just look forward to it. This latest book in Ian Rankin's Inspector John Rebus series fits that mold. It was a good story, going back in time when Rebus first became a detective and working on a current day case that ties into the old days. It was well done. I find with the narrator and his Scottish accent, i really have to pay attention all the time. When I pay good attention I get most of what is being said but if my attention wanes at all I start missing stuff. I guess my choice would be to keep the narrator and accent as the story is set in Edinburgh, Scotland after all. I'll look forward to the next one!
    Great narration, great book.
    Any additional comments?
James Macpherson proves to be the perfect Rebus narrator, much to my surprise. I've read Rebus for years but avoided James Macpherson's abridged versions. Other reading's have just not worked for me. Tried these on a whim, and I absolutely loved it.
Top notch Rebus, loved the slow build up of his return to the police force.
    I loved it!
I think this is such an excellent series. I relate to the characters, the story moves at the right pace, and the city of Edinburgh comes to life. The narration was perfect.

    A great thriller
I believe Lawrence Block at his best is among the three top thriller writers of the past 20 (30?) years. A great writer, but also very inconsistent: he reaches his best in the Matt Scudder books where the affinity with the main character, the need to deliver complex and consistently new plots, the familiar New York ambiance (where Scudder stories are taking place) truly inspire him and contribute to deliver excellent results. While the Rodenbarrs series are pleasant, but lightweight, the Keller books were surprising and stunning at first, but get repetitive and almost boring as new episodes come out, Matt Scudder continue to grip the reader with wit, dark dramas and the finely described characters and the environment of New York.
Scudder is following two cases at once: one involving a girl, a would-be
actress, who has been missing for several months. The second is more personal and involves the dead of an AA friend. In both the situations the police has given up and the leads few and scants. Suddenly both cases fortuitously intertwine and ..
By the way, Dan Butler is superb !
    Moving Scudder-- surprisingly strong ending
I had low expectations coming in, because this audiobook's rating wasn't super high. But I left it very satisfied. It's a pretty good story with surprising nuance. Dan Butler as narrator is a mixed bag. He is a bad choice to voice Matt Scudder, through no fault of his own but just because his voice doesn't match what Scudder fans have come to expect.
However, he is so good at at least one other character that on balance it comes off pretty well. It's hard for those of us spoiled by Alan Sklar, whose voice and manner fit Scudder so well. I wish that he had done all of these books. But Butler earns his keep in the end. I for one would love to spend an evening with his version of The Butcher. Recommended.
    Great reading by Dan Butler
In my opinion the best for Scudder stories due to his ability to catch the right tone. Also this is one of the best stories with several memorable characters and meditations on trust and betrayal.
    A good listen
The book kept my attention. I Was surprised at the twist it took at the end.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
If you want to know all about AA this is the book for you.
If youve listened to books by Lawrence Block before, how does this one compare?
This book is my least favorite of his books. I don't thing I will buy another. Good luck with Aa
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Witty dialogue, good plot, and quirky characters, I hope more Jaine Austen on Audible soon!
    meh
The story is OK. but there are too many times she over-states something and then tells the truth. it was funny the first dozen times.
even the main character is not believable.
    Great Read
This is another great book in the Jaine Austen series. Jaine is once again under suspicion for murder. She noises around to find the killer. As always, there are plenty of hijinks on Jaine's part and also from her father. The mystery is fun and enjoyable. The characters are entertaining and realistic. This is a very good story. I can't wait until the next book comes out.
    Oreos and Chardonnay
I love California mysteries. I've been reading Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone since "C is for Corpse" (1986), published the year I moved to Southern California. It's a place of stark contrasts - an oasis wrenched from the desert by William Mulholland, always flooded or in drought; of glittering Hollywood dreams built on the backs of migrants 'sans papiers.'
I keep looking for Marcia Clark's Rachel Knight ("Guilt by Association" (2011) etc.) at the Grand Central Market on Broadway when I get Thai take out after a Case Management Conference at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. And Michael Connelly - can I subpoena Harry Bosch ("The Black Echo" (1992), etc.) when I am defending a driver confused by Ventura Boulevard? And there's the LA Noir of Raymond Chandler, Gar Anthony Haywood, and Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins . .
