    Publisher's Summary:
    From Publishers Weekly
In this enjoyable fourth series entry, Galveston PI Truman Smith (When Old Men Die, 1994) is hired by Lance Garrison, his still unpleasant but now rich high-school classmate, to investigate the shooting of a prairie chicken (really a kind of grouse) on Garrison's federally protected land in Picketville, Tex. Smith reluctantly agrees, largely because his high-school sweetheart, Anne Lindeman, now lives in Picketville. A prime suspect is Ralph Evans, an antigovernment local talk-radio host who declares his concern for endangered species by advertising Spotted Owl in a Can.
When Smith and Anne's father-in-law, Red Lindeman, explore the scene of the crime, a sniper in a crop duster opens fire on them - a "fly-by shooting", Smith calls it. Then Anne's husband, manager of the radio station, is shotgunned to death. Police chief Ward Peavy eventually charges local birdwatcher Martin York.
When Smith discovers that a previous prisoner died in Peavy's jail, the big picture takes shape. Truman Smith would rather laze in his lawn chair, sipping Big Red and reading Tobacco Road, but when he gets on a case, he's methodical. So's Crider, who fashions a tight plot filled with laconic charm and idiosyncratic characters.

    From Booklist
If y'all are lookin' for a real fine read, Crider's your man. He writes one mean murder mystery, and his walkin' tall hero, Truman Smith, is as smart and as tough as they come. Plus Crider knows just how that East Texas good-ol'-boy talk sounds. This time out, Truman gets suckered into one of the craziest cases of all time. Lance Garrison, someone Tru went to high school with and didn't much like, wants Tru to investigate the death of a prairie chicken. Yep, that's right. A bird. But a rare, exotic bird. Lance thinks there's some government plot or maybe a loony-toons nut behind the prairie chicken's death. Tru agrees to investigate, partly for the $500-a-day fee and partly because he'll be in close proximity to Anne Lindemann, the still-beautiful high-school sweetheart who ditched him for Lance years earlier. For pure fun and sheer entertainment, it doesn't get much better than Crider's Tru Smith stories. Highly recommended.

    A Great Murder Mystery
Private Investigator Truman Smith is approached by his buddy, Dino to come to the aid of an old high school nemesis. Truman isn't interested by decides to go see what this guy, Lance wants anyways.
Lance had heard of Truman's success with an Alligator earlier and wants to hire Truman to find out who is killing a protected species of birds, the Prairie Chicken, a grouse. Truman is not impressed until his ex-girlfriend, Anne walks out.
For Truman, it is High School days again and those pesky 'what if's' attack. What if he had ended up with Anne and what if he had never broken Lance's nose on the Football field? Against his internal dialog, Truman accepts the job.
Immediately, Truman drives into Picketville to find people listening to government conspiracies, intimidation, is shot at by crop dusting planes and on and on. There is something wrong in Picketville and the grouse is just a symptom.
    This was a great story.

When a serial killer shows up on Longboat Key, Florida, after a twelve year absence, Matt Royal is stymied. The first woman killed on Longboat Key has ties to a secretive government agency for which Matts best friend Jock Algren works. Was this a coincidence or was she a targeted kill?
Matts friend, Longboat Key detective Jennifer Diane (J.D.) Duncan, investigates the murders but also seems to be a target of the killer. Why? And where has the killer been for twelve years? And why has he come to Longboat Key when his earlier kills were all in Miami?

Will Jock simply take out the murderer, or will he allow J.D. and the law to arrest, try, and convict the bad guys? Matts life is further complicated by J.D.s growing dissatisfaction with island living and her thoughts of returning to Miami.

The Matt Royal series is superb!
This series is not in chronological order. Fatal Decree goes back to the first days of the relationship between ex-lawyer Matt Royal and police detective JD Duncan. This novel is an excellent thriller. I had never listened to this narrator before starting this series. He is the perfect selection for this series.

    Mystery at its finest
What did you love best about Them Bones?
The character was transformed beautifully from a woman needing a job, to a young detective. The plot was excellent and this book became a fast read.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, the author did an amazing job keeping the pace fast and the plot thick so you didn't know what would happen next and the clues kept piling up.
Which character as performed by Kate Forbes was your favorite?
This book stayed with the main character throughout, and the narrator did an excellent job with her.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I was constantly wanting people around me to stop talking so much so I could finish the audiobook.
    Any additional comments?
Definitely a great read, a great mystery, and generally mystery is not my preferred subject (though I did love Sherlock Holmes). I will definitely pick up the next book in the series and continue watching the character grow.
    Amazing to the very end!!!
I didn't know what to expect as I started down this southern path of entertainment, but oh my! This enlightened journey, enhanced with soothing narration, has proven a great beginning to my summer reading. Rich in "color" with enough twists to make the bayou jealous, I can't wait to delve into book three! Yummmmmy Big Daddy Girl!
I kept wanting to like it!
The only reason it got two stars is that I stayed with it as long as I did. Boring, Dull, Disappointing.
The reader Does not help, Very Bland! Maybe I am spoiled with some of the wonderful readers Audible gives us, but a boring reader does not help the book when it is already weak.

    Well Done
I spent the first six weeks of my summer break enjoying this Savannah series. What a treat to read about a strong, mature woman who is happy with who she is. Savannah doesn't "need" a man like many characters do, but appreciates everyone she loves for who they are and ends up with a real husband. A husband who isn't perfect either. Along the way they solve murders together with great plots. McKevett writes fun mysteries with some great lessons on humanity under the surface. Thanks for making my summer reading a season to remember.
    Thoroughly entertaining.
If you are a G.A. McKevett fan, you will not be disappointed. As always, she is funny, witty and her stories are always a page turner. If you have never read G.A. McKevett, you should order every book in the series. The heroine is a southern belle personified with a heavy kick if you are not minding your manners. The characters come to life and with the end of each story, you are left wanting more time with the "family." I have read every single book in this series and I can't wait to read the next one!

And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. Another Great Read from Connelly
A very good read, Harry Bosch is back and on form. I'm a recent fan of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series, but I've now read the whole series. This ranks high among the series and I can recommend everyone to read it, not just the fans.
    Best Yet!!
What did you love best about The Black Box?
Having read/listened to all the Bosch books, this is by far the best story so far. I really liked how Michael Connelly has created a story from the past and brought it into the future. Similar to a couple of others since bosch has been in the open unsolved unit. But this story had me hooked from start to finish. Great story that comes together very nicely. Connelly is a genius the way he puts all this together. From Bosch starting with one small clue that leads him on a journey to find the truth.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    As always, Harry Bosch.
Which character as performed by Michael McConnohie was your favorite?
    Bosch.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely. Was hard to stop this when I had to. But got through it in two days.
    Any additional comments?
Please keep them coming Michael. I am at a loss without my fix of Bosch's determination and skill for finding justice.
    Bosch is back!
Would you listen to The Black Box again? Why?
complex plot, realistic policing, fast interesting plot.

    JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER
Kudos to Carolyn Haines! Number 12 in the BONES series is a funny, fast paced and extremely well written book. Sarah Booth (posing as a maid, bless her heart!) and Tinkie are up to their lovely necks with charlatans, flim flam artists, spirits and oddball characters of all description in beautiful Vickburg, MS. And, need I say that Oscar and Graf are NOT happy about it? I'm delighted to see that Harold Erkwell and Roscoe have returned. Roscoe is my favorite Haines character and he is laugh out loud funny! If you haven't read the others in the series, no problem. Miss Haines skillfully introduces the characters in each book so that they are equally enjoyable as stand alone reading. So, pour yourself a tall glass of sweet ice tea, get cozy in that white wicker rocker on the veranda and enjoy! That's what I did.
Can This Series Get Better? Yes!
This series is getting better, more solid and interesting murders, better characters, and the Romance is picking up. A bit of something for everyone. There was also a political stream running throughout the book, but not enough to bother the storyline, in fact it added to it.
The humor. Oh the humor. I was laughing my head off on pages 260 thru 262. I had been caught by a good argument on pages 51 and page 262. I would tell you why, but, then you might not take the effort to find out for yourselves and then what a mistake that would be.
Sarah Booth Delaney and Tinkie Bellcase Richmond are asked by their friend and psychic, Tammy Odom to look into one of her client's newest ideas. Tammy is getting scary dreams of her client's safety. Tammy also feels there might be a scam of some sort going on.
Sarah and Tinkie are still in a bit of trouble with their menfolk for being in such a dangerous job. What can going undercover for a couple of days hurt?
Plenty, it turns out. Armed guards, con artists, greed and more fill this house and Sarah Booth and Tinkie must use all of their talents, help from friends, and new 'guard pets' to get them safely back to Zinnia, Mississippi.
This was a terrific read and my only complaint is that I finished it so quickly and easily. Carolyn Haines is one of the best mystery Authors.
    Good Mystery
This author always puts together a great story. I have yet to read a bad one. This story just wasn't as engaging as the others, but don't get me wrong, it was still a good story. I like the author's writing style and her humor. Her books are real page-turners. BUT! I'm not feelin' it for Graf. Since his introduction, I just never liked him much. He's so perfect with his, "Shall we make love" type personality, I'd just wanna smack him & say "oh for heaven's sake." There's no chemistry between Sarah Booth and Graf like there was with Hamilton or Coleman.

    Loving This Series
I am loving this series so far and Johanna Parker is doing a great job on the narration. Some good twists and turns in this one although it was sad to loose one of the characters but then I wonder if he was really lost....and I have to say the ending on this one....if the next book was not already out...I would be very upset about having to wait to find out what happens next....off to start book 6
Picked up nicely for a fifth installment
What did you like best about this story?
It had all the things I like about this series. Plenty of wisecracks, plenty of Jace and Charley, plenty of weird inter-dimensional beings and gods.... Even a little heaven and hell. We meet Tanaka again, chase Stoker around, fight gigantic monsters and search for missing pire children. Plus, it leaves off with a cliff hanger that was strong enough for me to buy the next book to see what happens.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Meeting the skeleton in the graveyard and the awesome fight that ensues.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I don't get this question... If I have a good book, I want to draw it out as long as possible... But either way, it's a fun and entertaining book, but it doesn't fall into one of the "top 5" if that's what you mean.
    Any additional comments?
I'm glad the series picked up some. I took a little break between 4 and 5 because I wasn't inspired to move on to the next book. I don't think 4 was terrible, it was just getting kind of old. I'm willing to admit it could have been my mood. But I'm ready for book 6. Lets see what happens.
    Still fun
Would you listen to Back from the Undead again? Why?
Maybe, but the Bloodhound books are not the kind that you forget.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
No. The characters drive the story. You know that some how, some way that things are mostly going to turn out fine. The dialog is fast, fun, and snappy.
What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She makes the characters come alive.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I did not want it to end. Why rush?
    Any additional comments?
I really like the quirky, funny, and flawed characters.
    Can't stop! Need more!
I'm very happy with this story and character development. I've been on a binge! I love the narration with the perfect level of snarky sarcasm each situation needs. I'm on to the next book.

    Members Reviews:
Wish R.C. Bray Did A Better Sinatra
A tad predictable and a lot of the atmospherics are driven by dialogue. While Carnoy's ear for character voice is quite good, Bray was challenged by Sinatra. No he isn't awful and I'll listen to more work from both Carnoy and Bray... Still this time the duo didn't live up to their promise in Carnoy's earlier introduction to this ensemble cast in Knife Music. In this case Bray got the words... but lacked the music.
    The Big Eit
This book was a good story. What I did not like, was all the bad language as there was way too much of it.
