Holly does it again!

This book is unique in the Sage chronicles, as it continues the story of the 3rd book, rather than introducing a new character. In a way this made it more engaging as one has developed empathy toward the characters already. Beautiful lessons in teamwork & the true familial connection we ALL share on this planet!

Barbo has done it again! Believable characters, fast-moving plot, twists and turns that keep the reader involved. Couldn't put it down till I'd finished it. I hope there is another book in this series!

Great series

This is a great read. I would recommend this entire series to anyone, young or old. It kept me totally enthralled. I certainly enjoyed it. Excellent writing.

The Reweaving by Holly Barbo - ebook

Part of a series but I have not read all the books yet and this worked well as a standalone book. I became invested in these characters and could not wait to find out what happened to them and their world. I stayed up very late reading this excellent story. I have read one other of Holly Barbo's books and missed the two in the middle. I have them and will definitely read them as soon as I can.

This is just a wonderful story. I love the world Holly has created and her characters are a great mix of people with different goals, talents and needs.

As an animal lover, I especially enjoy how Holly portrays the animals in her stories. I also give her kudos for her attention to how people treat others as well as how people treat the environment in which they live. Everything is a balance and Holly's world realizes the importance of balance.

I highly recommend this story to any and all fantasy fans.

A thoroughly enjoyable fantasy

Enthroned by Amethysts is the most engrossing book I have read this year. I could not put it down. Jennifer has blended the mythology of many Terran cultures into a seamless whole. She has created an entire universe of magical beings whose lives seem completely familiar.

The âDance with Destinyâ series has more plot twists than I can count, yet they are not an artificial literary device but rather a natural result of the unfolding of events in the heroine Jenevier's life. Jenevier's only character flaw is that she loves too much and too completely. She often loves recklessly to her own destruction.

The story is fantasy (with plenty of romance) but like mythology and science fiction the book shines a spotlight on the human condition and causes the reader to examine his or her actions and the effect that those actions have on the lives of the people around them. I have already begun reading book 4, Destroyed by Onyx and I cannot wait to learn what happens next!

'Enthroned By Amethysts' is spellbinding! This is the best book yet in the Dance With Destiny series! J K Ensley has again breathed life into the world of finite humanity entwined with the infinity of fantastical and spiritual realms. Passionate and beautiful, raw and tragic. Read with an open heart!

Poignant and astonishing! J.K. Ensley continues to amaze

Book three has the most unpredictable twists thus far in the series and if you have fallen in love with Jenevier, as every reader will, you will agonize over this part of her journey. There are no words to describe how Jennifer Ensley will astonish you with this poignant book.

Don't review this book after one read on a Sunday afternoon.

I am an avid reader of books containing challenging ideas, and after five reads over a year I am still digesting "A Song of Stone".

This book communicates the horror of the human experience better then anything I've read since "The Heart of Darkness". Banks uses a morbid and brooding tone similar to that of "The Wasp Factory" but does so with more maturity and greater lyrical precision. "A Song of Stone" is not for those readers who seek recreational escapism or morally clean and simple tales. Bank's ability to make the horrid both lovely and beautiful is his greatest strength as a writer and is probably the cause of negative reviews seen here. To enjoy this book requires you to be psychology prepared to enter a dark and occasionally monstrous world, and to allow some of your most taboo impulses to surface into conscience thought.

I consider it to be a hell of a good time- definitely a book to own rather then borrow. "A Song of Stone" along with "The Bridge" is Banks at his best. Due to it's content, most people do not consider this "appropriate" reading - I feel that is exactly the reason it should be read.

Human nature unfettered

This book explores the worst of human behavior. It is very believable and I really think these types of things have happened before. It's about refugees trying to escape a war that is encroaching upon the countryside. It happens that they run up on a military unit that takes charge. What follows is what humans do.

The book is very grim and explores the dark side of human nature. I found it to be a powerful experience.

an ode to the futility of war

I was lost reading this story â there was no place or time given, nor any reason for the fighting. They were using horse drawn carts, but had access to gasoline driven vehicles; he was Lord of the Manor with peasants and servants, yet they were using guns and cannons. This ambiguity did not bother my enjoyment of the story.

The story is strictly told from the Lord's point of view, him memories and understanding of what all is going on, and he is strictly telling it to his wife.

Great Finale!

I am still in shock and in awe with this fantastic finale to the Immortal Trilogy. The unfold of the storyline was totally unexpected, without getting away from the main plot, Ms. Katsu proved once again her talent as a writer and story teller.

The story unfold in a way that will surprise you with the most unexpected turns and twists.

We've met a new Adair in each book, and this Adair is even more "godlike" that you can imagine. It is so hard to review this book without giving up spoilers of the plot... I'll do my best.

Let's begin saying is the culmination of a love story, is about the power of love, and how much we are willing to give up and sacrifice in order to be with the love one.

But is not a fairy tale either; this specific book it might seem like one, but if you have followed the story since book one, you know that is not the case. The main characters have gone thorough a journey of self discovery, and not an easy one. From romantic love, addictive relationships, abusive relationships, codependency, immortality, betrayal etc. Until they find true love, not without being hurt and not without paying a price.

One part of the book that touched me deeply, and made me meditate is when Lanore met Sophia in the underworld. Lanny felt guilty of Sophia's suicide, and Sophia tells her that she is giving too much credit to what she did. At the end, our ultimate fate is in our hands not in the hands of others, based on the decisions and choices we made.

This book like it's predecessors is about fantasy, magic, power, immortality, Love; but in this one we are also in touch with the underworld and the Gods. A fresh and romantic approach to Dante's Inferno and Greek Mythology. Never see that coming.

You won't be disappointing with the final outcome.

The Descent is the final book in author Alma Katsuâs The Taker Trilogy. After reading, and loving, the first two books I was beyond anxious to see how things would end for Lanny, Adair, Luke and Jonathan.

Swords, sorcery and sex!

Okay, now that I've got your attention I'll begin the review. Published in 2011, "The Chronicles of Varuk: Book One" is your run-of-the-mill sword and sorcery tale written by Scott Reeves. The story centers on a young (18 years old) barbarian warrior named Ko Yingh Varuk or just simply Varuk who has decided to seek adventure outside of his mountainous Northern village. Against his parent's and the tribal elder's wishes, Varuk gathers his meager belongings and begins his treacherous journey Southward into civilized lands to seek fame, fortune, women and whatever else lies beyond. Here are my thoughts on The Chronicles of Varuk: Book One;

Pros

+ Good old fashioned barbarian sword and sorcery.

+ Engaging story.

+ Some clever plot twists.

+ Sex scenes weren't overly gratuitous or ridiculous. (This may be a con for some readers!)

+ Accomplished writing.

Cons

- Author often ignores perfect opportunities to expand on action in the story. Examples include; the struggle with and possession by the canyon spirit, fighting the bridge soldiers, death of the princess, fleeing the cities soldiers, fighting the beasts in the arena as a boy and battling the slurteen spirit. I feel if the author fleshed out these scenes a bit more he could create some great action sequences that would allow the story to fall more in line with the true sword and sorcery genre.

- Overall story feels slightly disjointed as each story seems to have initially been written as a separate short story and loosely linked together.

- Nothing terribly original for the genre.

- No map.

The Chronicles of Varuk: Book One reminded me a lot of David C. Smith's "Oron" series and of course Robert E. Howards "Conan." While it's difficult not to picture a hulking Northern barbarian and not be reminded of Conan, Reeves does an admirable job of giving Varuk enough of his own personality to make him memorable. Running a length of approximately 75 pages the four stories included in this book were "Varuk: Rites of Passage, Varuk: the Maiden and the Demon, Varuk and the Razorbeast and Varuk and the Princess." All in all an enjoyable fantasy read and I look forward to reading the further adventures of Ko Yingh Varuk.

Good story, but WAY too short!

If this story had been about as long as a typical paperback book, I would have rated it with 5 stars, as it captivated me from beginning to end.

However, I would NOT call this a BOOK! It's a short story... one that should be included with an anthology of perhaps four or five more stories IN a book. I was able to read this one in about an hour. Most paperback books will last me four to six hours, at least.

I am VERY disappointed that there are no Amazon standards here on minimum pages required, to be requisite for the status of being called "a book".

To add insult to injury, the author set his price at $2.99.

Excellent, original world full of promise

I've never been a huge steampunk fan but after listening to Bruce Boxleitner's amazing voice talent reading this book I have to say I'm definitely a fan now. Fascinating, original world with the dark political hues of Game of Thrones it's worth listening to in preparation for the upcoming TV show and comic book series. Lots of promise for this creative concept. I just wish the story hadn't "ended" so soon! Talk about a cliffhanger!

All hype and steam, no substance

Whhaaaat is up with some of the high star reviews on Amazon? This is written HORRIBLY, in a tell-don't-show manner that just doesn't work for books. The narration dictates to us precisely what we're suppose to think of so-and-such and the details of the world are so vague that it's impossible to get a feel for where they are. Even if this were a tv series, the premise of the story wasn't interesting enough to convince me to watch. It's disjointed and nothing is described well (if at all).

Characters make abrupt choices without any proper development to make their decisions believable, and none of them are likable enough to really care about what happens to them anyway. I don't know what the male equivalent term to a 'marysue' is, but Isaac Grey is just that, and Killian is set up to be the same. This should not have been approved to be sold to a paying audience.
