Picky, I know I'm Picky.

I really enjoyed this book -- the plot, the characters, the locale, the whole thing....BUT....Ms Andrea Bates needs to learn the pronunciation of the few Spanish words in the text correctly (unless of course, Spanish in NEW Mexico is pronounced differently than it is in "OLD" Mexico)

.As a writer and editor details are extremely important to me and as a US citizen living in central Mexico, near Guadalajara for 26 years, my Spanish pronounciation is good, even though my grammar is flawed.

Ms Bates just misses on a couple of words, but each is used multiple times and they grated, and made the back of my neck stiff.

First -- Brujas (witches, curanderas) is said bru-haas NOT Bru jaws as in the tape.

The second is Quinceareas, the celebration of the 15th birthday, and that number is the more commonly used slang for the event -- a girl has her "Quincea~nos" of just Quince. Actually that is the part of the word causing the problem -- Quince (15) in Spanish is not pronounced like the fruit, the quince. Any time there is a qui in a Spanish word, it is pronounced "key" So it could phonically be written keencee or the full Quincea~nos (with the tilde over the n) is pronounced Keencee anYos

I know, it's picky....but the first couple times she said Bru-jaws I didn't know what she was talking about.

Thanks for an enjoyable listen and if I could I'd give the performance 3.5, in spite of these words and the 3 or 4 times she had lost her place or fumbled on a word.

Good book

The story really kept my interest. Samantha was a good woman that thought of others. I liked her character. The reader of the book did a great job. She could always be understood and had an extremely pleasant voice. I believe a woman between 40 and 80 would like this book best.

cute and different!

I really enjoyed reading about someone a little older, a little less perfect but still living life aggressively! I got a kick out of her jobs and appreciated how hard Sam had to work.

Great stuff! War and romance.

Okay, I am an unabashed Stephen Coonts fan. This 1986 novel set in the Vietnam war period features 26 year old Jake Grafton as a US Navy pilot in combat. It is the first novel in the 10 book Jake Grafton series and it was also the first to be released as a movie in 1991.

Frankly, Stephen Coonts' books are of inconsistent quality, but the worst are excellent. Since the beginning of Coonts' Tommy Carmellini series, all books in both series have had Grafton and Carmellini as co-protagonists.

Narration is excellent, but Coonts changes narrators too often in his 38 audiobooks.

Superb Storytelling!

Where does Flight of the Intruder rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This audio book is top 10% among all of the ones I have listened to.

What did you like best about this story?

A lot of books start with a good premise that gets lost along the way. Coonts starts, follows through, and delivers an awesome conclusion to a fantastic book.

Flight of the intruder

I've read this before probably 25 years ago. It's still an excellent story. I recommend it.

For aviation buffs

What did you like best about Flight of the Intruder? What did you like least?

If you want to know the intimate details of how an aircraft carrier works, this one is for you. Ditto if you've always wanted to be a fighter pilot. If you are not into the aviation minutia, then maybe take a pass. The acronyms build up to the point that it gets confusing sometimes -- and I worked for the government! "He glanced at the CREP and then adjusted the ITB." That kind of thing.

That said, the book did bring back memories of the Vietnam War and was interesting as the perspective of a participant. The main character is competent but not a super-hero. He's believable, but the love story is not. Actually, that may not be an apt description.

Buy the BOOK, skip the AUDIO

Any time Lincoln Rhyme is called into action, I can count on Jeffrey Deaver to deliver hours of enjoyable diversion, either in print or on audio. Any time, that is, until now.

In print, The Kill Room might equal Deaver's earlier works. I wouldn't know. I made the mistake of listening to the tale. And the new, multi-voiced narration of this work harms the story-telling so greatly, it surprises me that any audio producer would sacrifice his reputation by allowing it to reach listeners.

Audio casting is remarkably bad. Rhyme is presented in a weak, petulant voice, undermining the gravitas that our disabled forensic investigator presented in early audiobooks (and films). Sachs is even worse, portrayed with a voice that is not serious and is almost flitty. All this is even more disappointing since previous narrators, including the great George Guidall and Dennis Boutsikaris, performed so outstandingly that they enhanced Deaver's work.

Worse, something went wrong technically with the merging of these voices. You can hear that these two voices were not actually recorded at the same time and that Sachs was spliced into the overall audio. This is so jarring and so noticeable, it is unforgivable that professionals would not have corrected it before releasing the "finished" product.

There are worse narrations in the Audible catalog, but none for such a high-profile, popular novelist. How did this happen?

Narration aside, the plot is interesting and offers a few surprises. Rhyme continues to be developed nicely as a character, as does Sachs. This may not be Deaver's "A" game, but it isn't too far off the mark.

In short, The Kill Room is worth a READ, but not a listen. This time, buy the BOOK.

Multiple narrators = multiple things to hate

Usually l love the diversion of a Lincoln Rhyme novel. The multiple narrators distracted from the story in this case. In particular I hated the voice for Amelia and the way her dialogue popped in and always sounded like it didn't flow.

Primary narrator was fine but multiple voices did a disservice to a story that was already not one of my favorite in the series.

How Bad Can it Get?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Deaver should be a bit more diligent in picking the reader for his audio books. The latest "talent" left too much to be desired. His past readers/performers did a great job instilling the characters in my mind. This new genre of 3 readers is a joke. It makes it hard to listen to and hard to visualize.

Je pense que l'histoire aurait pu être un peu condensée. Mais c'est un excellent livre audio! Et pas trop de sang ce qui m'a beaucoup plu.

Keeps your interest

I found this to be a very good suspense/thriller. Patrick, now a reporter was an abused child, that we become acquainted with throughout the book, since he found evidence of a long ago missing child in his dead mother's belongings. The whole book is trying to solve the mystery of why his mother would be in possession of the medallion worn by the missing child. Patrick puts himself in deeper and deeper danger as he unravels the puzzle.Clues unfold and Patrick's tormented upbringing comes to light, as a killer pursues him.

Meh

Lots of immature dialogue, probably thrown in for entertainment, but it wasn't. I don't understand where the high ratings came from. One review mentioned it as being a B movie, I think they were right....

The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted

I just finished listening to this fantastic book by Andrew E. Kaufman and performed/read by Luke Daniels. I gave it five stars and would give it 10 if possible. The storyline was unique, intense and kept me glued to it until I was finished. It was so well conceived, tightly written, you felt like you were in the story yourself. The characters were so identifiable that it felt as though I was riding along with Patrick. There are places where you laugh, places where you cried with empathy and action aplenty so that you never had a moment the story didn't have you hooked, sometimes to the point that I would realize I was holding my breath, anxious to rush forward to know what was going to happen next. You begin to feel invested in the characters and your emotions rode up and down, around and around. It kept you guessing until the end and when the plot came together at the end, you felt relief for the characters but you didn't want to let go. I just couldn't get enough. I look forward to the next book by Mr. Kaufman that I can dig into! And the narrator, Luke Daniels, really brought the book to life for me. He was flawless in his delivery of different characters. But his delivery of Patrick was so very authentic, I felt as though Patrick Bannister was telling his own story with a voice that was rich, emotion-filled, personable. Thank you to both the author and the reader for making this one of the best books I've read or listened to in a very long time.

An homage to Agatha Christie

This book is a bit different from previous MHC novels but different isn't necessarily bad. I felt like this was an interesting twist on classic who dunnits. The book itself reminded me a lot of the Agatha Christie novel Taken at the Flood. Fans of either writer should give this book a shot. I liked it a lot and found myself trying to find a similar book to read after I had finished this one.

Always a nice read

Would you consider the audio edition of Daddy's Gone A Hunting to be better than the print version?

As a busy mom being able to have the audio version of this book was great. I was able to listen on my commute to work, while doing housework and when getting ready to go to bed. Print versions are good, but being "read to" while doing mundane chores is way better!

What other book might you compare Daddy's Gone A Hunting to and why?

It is similar to Mary Higgins Clark's other books, but I own all of them, so I guess she is doing something right.

Which scene was your favorite?

Kate's experiences and flashes of memory while in a coma was interesting.

I gave the book 5 stars because I did enjoy it.The reader was good but the sentences were too long for the sentecnce to flow smoothly for any reader. Too much information was given at one time of the characters. More info could have been reveled as the story unfolded.There were too many characters with only a small role in the book but they too had too much history making it too "wordy".

A bit disappointing compared to her other books.

What didnt you like about Jan Maxwells performance?

Her voices were awful, especially the older men. At one point she switched from an Irish accent to another voice mistakenly. Not the quality I was expecting at all.

Pressia, Bradwell, Lyda, Partridge,and El Capitan, are all once again on a mission to bring down the Dome. If you have read the first book, then you will definitely enjoy this one! This is full of adventure, romance,sadness and has excellent narration! This will keep you on the edge until the very end however it will keep you hanging. If you dont like to wait for the ending, then I recommend waiting until the next and final book comes out before you start this one.

CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!

What made the experience of listening to Fuse the most enjoyable?

......I love this series...I think it is so much more original and interesting then most dystopian society books, lately. I am just fascinated and horrified, by the way the nuclear blasts changed the world and the people. Well, at least the unprotected ...

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

absolutely!The way the author can find beauty in the ghastly...is worth the listen....It will not disappoint!

Which character as performed by the narrators was your favorite?

The main characters are intricate and the way the author "writes them" to us, you truly care about them....its very cool.But there is something about "El Capitan" and his brother...I dont want to give anything away....you just need to listen....these books are like nothing else you've listened to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the books from start to finish. But I enjoyed the way the people were described, finding how their deformities can be lovely. And their will to survive, under such dire conditions....It also has a lot of symbolism, I think....

Narrator hits the wrong note

What did you love best about Circle of Bones?

I like the story very much

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was tense at times, and, this being a new author to me, I couldn't be sure the good guys and gals would survive to the final page.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Angela Dawe?

Sadly, just about anyone. The narrator started off with far too much tension so that suspense didn't have a chance to build. Her odd intonation didn't help, either.

The second book in this series is also narrated by the same individual so I won't be purchasing it as an audiobook.

Couldn't get through the first chapter

I am sure the story is great - but just could not listen to the mechanical/robot-like narration. It was like listening to MapQuest/GPS trying to read me a story. Would definitely try another book/series from this author, as long as there was a different narrator.

Such a Disappointment!

Full disclosure: I listened to 5 hours and couldn't go on.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Kling's Saychelle Sullivan series - huge - and expected this to be on par. The description of this book appealed to me for a long road trip; I thought my husband would enjoy the diving for sunken treasure. Five hours in, there was NO diving. The ONLY thing that happened in those 5 hours was a rising body count; and, boy howdy, did it rise! Plot development was further slowed by constantly switching back and forth between past and present, which added nothing to our understanding of just what the heck was going on. I am still asking myself if this is the same Christine Kling.

The main reason I quit after 5 hours (during a 6+-hour road trip) was this: Angela Dawe gave me a headache. As my husband described it, she was reading in all caps. I may have been able to get through the story had it not been the physically painful delivery.

Great story, but the narrator...

Fascinating story, yet it was difficult to get past the narrator. Her style is almost identical to my GPS tone - quite mechanical and intense. Too intense from the beginning. The only time she changes tone is when she changes accents. Worth the effort to continue, however. Don't let her voice stop you from purchasing :)

Poor Narration

I have returned other books narrated by Angela Dawe, but never can remember her name until I hear that annoying voice inflection at the end of every single sentence. I was disappointed because the book seemed like it would be engaging. I wonder how the narrator keeps getting work, when there are so many delightful narrators available. I made it through about ten minutes before I had to stop listening.

I LIKE this narrator quite a lot!!!!

What did you love best about The Crime at Black Dudley?

I am not going to answer all these questions, I'm just going to write my review. I am writing this review primarily in defense of the narrator, who I think does a very good job, and as of my writing there are nothing but complaints about him in the written reviews posted. He does Margery Allingham the courtesy of reading her work the way she wrote it, and I appreciate that in a narrator. I did not like the narration of Frances Mathews, who read the only unabridged versions of Allingham on Audible prior to the full series coming out with David Thorpe reading, and I think Thorpe is much better.

Some have complained that in this book, Campion has an annoying, high pitched voice as read by Thorpe. Allingham tells us clearly in this book, on multiple occasions, that Campions voice is annoying, high pitched, and falsetto and Thorpe has the integrity and courage to read the character the way Allingham wrote him. Additionally, I find it annoying in some readers when they aren't familiar enough with the work to give the lines of dialog that occur before the explanations of them the correct emotional tone, an error Thorpe never makes. An example of the kind of thing I mean is a character will say, "I'm coming back now" and the reader will read it in a cheery tone of voice, and then the next line in the book is "he said sadly", and there we are with the jolt of a line read incorrectly by a reader that didn't do his or her homework and prepare properly for reading the the story. Thorpe has done his homework, he doesn't' make mistakes like this, his delivery is completely true to what Allingham meant it to be. There is no higher tribute a reader can pay to an author and it's one as a listener I REALLY appreciate, especially when I am fond of an author as I am of Allingham. Also, Thorpe reads with energy and sounds as though he is enjoying and appreciating the story as he reads it, and finally and perhaps most importantly, he GETS THE JOKES and reads the text in such a way that we can get them too. There is nothing sadder with these lovely examples of English humor than a reader who doesn't get the subtle humor and ruins it for the listener by reading it wrong.

Still a great series

Action, suspense, great characters and a well-written story. I am getting used to the narrator/voices in my head disconnect (you know, when what you're hearing isn't how you thought the characters should sound ); Ms Corbett is absolutely capable-her men sound like men, her accents are amazing, and I like her voice.

If you're up for a decent forensic series without a lot of gore and isn't going to leave you unable to sleep at night, allow me to suggest this entire series. And I do suggest you start at the beginning to get the full flavor of how things are put together and who these people are.

And I'm delighted to say that while this series is beginning to flag a bit, it is still a solid 4 stars.

Great Ruth Galloway Mystery!!!

Ruth remains one of my favorite mystery characters. She is very real with believable strengths and weakness. Like all of us she is always second guessing herself. DCI Nelson and the Druid Cathbarth, other characters in these tales, are well developed with their own strengths and weakness. Ms. Griffiths' books, well plotted and riveting until the last paragraph, leave the reader wanting more.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Clare Corbett?

BRING BACK Jane McDowell! Clare Corbett is a terrible match for these characters! I'm going to finish the book, bit I'm dreading hearing the male characters talk. I can't comment on their accents, but she sounds as if she's doing parodies of male voices.

Another good episode in series

The Ruth Galloway series is well-written and interesting, with good continuing character development throughout. Ruth is an archeologist who tends to always become involved in forensic activities, so has developed a strong relationship with some of the local police, as well as her friends from the university where she teaches.

In this book, Ruth receives a letter from a friend from an earlier time in her life, just after he has been killed in a fire, hinting at a stupendous archeological discovery. Ruth feels she must travel to Pendle University where he taught to investigate. So she sets out with her young daughter. Her friend Cathbad the druid is there, and so, conveniently, is Nelson, the policeman who is also father to her child.

As she looks into the discovery, dark and strange events begin to occur.
