You won't want to stop reading...
I picked this book because I enjoy the reader, but have discovered how talented MHC is. This book is very entertaining and the twists and turns will hold your interest until the surprise ending. This audio is 5 Stars!
    Remember
This is my favorite book of all time. Awesome reading. I couldn't stop listening, it was addictive.
    very confusion storyline
I usually enjoy mary Higgins Clarke but I could not get into this book with the back and forth past and present after chapter 7, I just stopped reading it.
    Good read but slow start
The beginning was a bit slow but overall good book. I would suggest it. Try not to quit half way
    Awesome!
The twist and turns kept me glued to my seat. Every time I thought I had the story figured out another plot took root. I live in a Victorian house and often imagine who live here in those days. I think this helped me to fully embrace the possibilities of haunting. But, you certainly don't need to believe in ghost to be taken in by this story. A powerful story of mystery, love and loss!

    Mrs. Pollifax is my heroine
I met Mrs. Pollifax when I was fourteen and spending the summer at my grandmother's. She had stacks of Reader's Digest Condensed Books collections. Mrs. Pollifax stayed in my memory, but I didn't pursue the relationship at the time. Years later I came across an audio recording at the library while I was looking for entertainment for an upcoming road trip. That's when I was introduced to Barbara Rosenblat, and my then thirteen-year-old daughter and I enjoyed the stories together. The Mrs. Pollifax audiobooks are among my very favorites. I used my audible subscription to collect them as they were added to the catalog, but only if they were narrated by Barbara Rosenblat.
Mrs Pollifax is just a wonderful character. She lived a sheltered, domesticated life, and when she had fulfilled her role as wife and mother, realized that what came next in the established order of things was just busy work to cover the emptiness. She had never been encouraged to pursue her own interests or dreams, but now, with nothing to lose, she takes a leap, and the result is amazing. With most series, I am thoroughly bored with the main character by the third or fourth book. Not only did I love every one of these, but I have listened to them mulitple times (exceptions: story wise, the Second Thief was not my favorite, and I have never purchased Unveiled, as it was not narrated by Barbara Rosenblat).
Mrs. Pollifax gives me hope for my own future now that my children are grown with children of their own. She demonstrates that there is always room for adventure, we just have to say "Yes!"
Barbara Rosenblat's narration is oustanding, she inerprets the characters beautifully and each one is identifiable. She doesn't just read the story, she tells it. I have been known to listen to books just because I'm not sure what I really want, but there is one narrated by Rosenblat.
Mrs. Pollifax at her best. Barbara Rosenblat, too
As usual, this is an excellent Mrs. Pollifax book and Barbara Rosenblat does an excellent job of bringing her to life. Farrell is back and the usual quick mission becomes something more. They succeed, of course, beyond their wildest dreams and foil another plot in the process.
    Great series
What did you love best about Mrs. Pollifax, Innocent Tourist?
Absolutely loved this whole series. Narration was great except for the last book in the series. Loved the locations and the detailed description about the people, customs, and traditions.

    Unsung Heroes
What did you love best about SEAL Team Six Outcasts?
The valor and honor of these seals, even if they are fiction or not. (Honestly, I couldn't tell and don't want to be part of the firestorm that is currently surrounding books like this.)
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Alex and Kat, but the other guys were just hilarious, even in the throroughs of a fire fight.
What about Phil Gigantes performance did you like?
He's a great narrator. He differentiated his voice so it was easy to follow the story and who was talking.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, on the train when the Seals stepped up to protect one that wasn't their own. Won't ruin it for you, but it made me proud to support the armed forces, knowing these were the types of people we have in the field.
    Any additional comments?
Do yourself a favor and listen to this one with a vet. Not only will you appreciate them more but you'll understand why they reup for three, four, and five tours. Makes sense now, even if it breaks your heart later.
Getting Back Into SEAL Team Six
Would you listen to SEAL Team Six Outcasts again? Why?
Yes, SEAL Team Six Outcasts was another great listen. The SEALS amaze me. Their identity is the SEALS.

    Publisher's Summary:
    A battered detective.
A dead girl on the beach.
    A small town on edge.
A curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable.
After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats 3,000 miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation - forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl's murder.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting
This book seemed to be a combination of opposites. I bought it based on the good reviews I had read. And I largely agree with them. The story is about Garrsion Gage, a former private investigator who is now a curmudgeonly, withdrawn, broken man, who has retired to be alone in a small Oregon coast town after his wife was killed and his leg permanently injured in an attack. He lives with his memories and crossword puzzles, and except for Mattie--an older woman who lives in a small house he owns and her granddaughter Zoe, he has no contact with anyone. Everything changes when he finds the body of a young woman, washed up on the beach.
The opposites (to me) were the fact that the author has created an interesting and believable protagonist, who is far from being without redeeming features. In fact, over the course of the book, he is revealed to have many sides to himself. The plot, as mysteries go, is better than many--certainly held my attention, and I noticed myself thinking about it, wanting to get back to listening, in between times. It moved well, kept a good pace, had well-developed characters and just had enough twists and turns to have it be always engaging.
And yet, I would say the author was a good writer of story, without being skillful at his craft. There were times I groaned out loud, at some of his cliche similes and descriptions. I felt like people do, who attend "B" movies for fun, just because they are so awful! At some point I simply decided that the story was good enough to ignore the beyond-corney descriptions. And similarly, the narrator did an outstanding job of creating different voices, including the few women--which I think can be a challenge for a man reading. Very, very good at that. But--and this seemed in tandem with the author's terrible descriptions, as to the pace of the reading, and inflection, and the weight of words in places, I wished I could have had a rag to bite on, as one thing after another spoiled the moments of listening. And if I had to listen to him mispronounce the word "spindly" one more time (why DID the author use it so much?) I thought I would scream.
So I wanted to write this to say that I really liked this book. And I fully intend to listen to the next in series. And I have decided to focus on the story and characters--which are quite good, and just "listen around" all the other stuff. Oddly, this was a good enough story to be worth the misery of what sometimes had a bit of an amateurish feel to it.

    Publisher's Summary:
What are you thinking, Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions storm cloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do? Just how well can you ever know the person you love?
These are the questions that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.
So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war.
    Members Reviews:
    Get Gone Girl soon!
Remember the film, War of the Roses with Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas? Well, this is along similar lines but there are less physical thrills and far more psychological ones which makes for a better read whereas the former, perhaps, makes for more excitable viewing. I found it pretty impossible to "put this book down." It went everywhere with me while I completed my daily tasks and then again late into the night. I had finished it within 3 days but unlike other books I don't want to read another immediately as I would like to 'soak' this book up for a while and think about it. It is very well written and contains some complex ideas which are described in metaphoric symbolism and therefore made easier to understand. I am looking forward to Gillian Flynn writing another excellent book. Very highly recommended.
    Not just another whodunit
Without giving the plot away, suffice it to say that Gone Girl isn't just another missing person story, but a psychological thriller that keeps up the suspense to the last page. So don't be put off by the length. I'm left pondering the character of the victim as well as the perpetrator, and wondering what will happoen next. It's one of those books I will read again. With the two antagonists telling their story in the first person, the alternating male and female readers was a must. A top book all round.
    Thrilling and Disturbing
Ive been trying to review this book for a while now and it has become a real struggle. I dont want to give any spoilers for this brilliant book so I will try my best. Advanced warning: this review may have spoilers or turn out incredible vague. When I first saw this book I kept thinking this was just another YA novel but then I noticed this book kept popping up everywhere so I thought I better read what this is about and when I did, I had to read it right away.
When Amy disappears in suspicious circumstances all eyes fall to her husband as the primary suspect. Nick claims he is innocent but the evidence is not in his favour. Did Nick kill his wife? As this novel progressed any ideas of what happened will be shattered, any presumptions youve made about the characters will be wrong.

    Publisher's Summary:
He was called by many names - Columb, Colom, Col - but we know him as Christopher Columbus. Many questions about him exist: Where was he born, raised, and educated? Where did he die? How did he discover the New World? None have ever been properly answered. And then there is the greatest secret of all....
From Steve Berry, New York Times best-selling author, comes an exciting new adventure - one that challenges everything we thought we knew about the discovery of America.
Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Tom Sagan has written hard-hitting articles from hot spots around the world. But when a controversial report from a war-torn region is exposed as a fraud, his professional reputation crashes and burns. Now he lives in virtual exile - haunted by bad decisions and the shocking truth he can never prove: That his downfall was a deliberate act of sabotage by an unknown enemy. But before Sagan can end his torment with the squeeze of a trigger, fate intervenes in the form of an enigmatic stranger with a request that cannot be ignored.
Zachariah Simon has the look of a scholar, the soul of a scoundrel, and the zeal of a fanatic. He also has Tom Sagan's estranged daughter at his mercy. Simon desperately wants something only Sagan can supply: the key to a 500-year-old mystery, a treasure with explosive political significance in the modern world.
For both Simon and Sagan the stakes are high, the goal intensely personal, and the consequences of opposing either man potentially catastrophic. On a perilous quest from Florida to Vienna to Prague and finally to the mountains of Jamaica, the two men square off in a dangerous game. Along the way, both of their lives will be altered - and everything we know about Christopher Columbus will change.
As a special bonus, this audiobook download also includes a recording of the short story "The Admiral's Mark," read by Scott Brick.
    Critic Reviews:
"As always with Steve Berry, you're educated about significant things while your knuckles are turning white and the pages are flying by." (New York Times best-selling author David Baldacci)
"Berry raises this genre's stakes." (The New York Times)
"Steve Berry writes with the self-assured style of a veteran." (New York Times best-selling author Dan Brown)
    Members Reviews:
    I Enjoyed This Ride
This was my first Steve Berry novel and I enjoyed it! I enjoyed it despite Scott Brick, (Brick has ruined more audio books for me than any other reader) and I almost didnt get it because of him, but the premise was intriguing enough I mean, who ever really thinks about Columbus? I didnt, but I love this type of historical fiction because it inspires me to think about the past in new and interesting ways and the next time I see a Columbus biography in the bookstore I just might pick it up and flip through it!
The writing and storytelling here is more solid than anything from Dan Brown, but the two main characters, Tom and his daughter Alle, are a bit melodramatic we meet Tom just as he is about to commit suicide over an apparent mistake he made some years earlier.

"[A] sexy thriller.... Another explosive hit.... When it comes to mixing that perfect blend of romance and danger, Ms. Howard is unbeatable!" (Romantic Times)
    Members Reviews:
Enjoyable enough, but not Howard's best
Solid narration by Kate Forbes. Fair story. Nothing special, but not bad. I liked the scenes where John Medina (Tucker) was teaching self-defense to Niema Burdoch. There's explicit sex towards the end. The two protagonists did something very stupid, hanging around in France when danger clearly lurked.
Linda Howard's "CIA Spies" series get lots of acclaim, but personally, I think they are half-baked. They didn't feel complete as a romance nor as a suspense thriller.
The three books in the series, in order:
    1. Kill and Tell. An old US Marine (retired) sent his "Sniper killbook" to his estranged wife and daughter. It contains evidence that would expose a corrupt senator. When said sniper is murdered, his daughter Karen turns to New Orleans PD detective Marc Chastain for help. A CIA agent (John Medina) gets involved because the bad guys also killed his father. Too much torrid sex in this one, but a decent plot.
    2. All the Queen's Men (this book). Covert CIA agent John Medina (introduced in Kill and Tell) puts the sting on a deadly explosives operation, meanwhile putting the moves on CIA techno-geek Niema Burdoch. He's loved her for five years. We also learn that John Medina has a soft spot for Karen and Marc (book 1), keeping watch over them.

As a medical examiner, Samantha Owens knows her job is to make a certain sense of death with crisp methodology and precision instruments.
But the day the Tennessee floods took her husband and children, the light vanished from Sams life. She has been pulled into a suffocating grief no amount of workaholic ardor can penetrate - until she receives a peculiar call from Washington, D.C.
On the other end of the line is an old boyfriends mother, asking Sam to do a second autopsy on her son. Eddie Donovan is officially the victim of a vicious carjacking, but under Sams sharp eye the forensics tell a darker story. The ex-Ranger was murdered, though not for his car.
Forced to confront the burning memories and feelings about yet another loved one killed brutally, Sam loses herself in the mystery contained within Donovans old notes. It leads her to the untouchable Xander, a soldier off-grid since his return from Afghanistan, and then to a series of brutal crimes stretching from that harsh mountainous war zone to this nations capital.
The tale told between the lines makes it clear that nobodys hands are clean, and that making sense of murder sometimes means putting yourself in the crosshairs of death.

    Great author and narration!
Forensic pathologist delves into military secrets-
Ellison starts a new series with a take-off character from another series. Dr. Samantha Owens is a Forensic Pathologist in Nashville, Tennessee. She's been devoted to her job until tragedy struck her. Her husband and two children are dead and she lives with self imposed guilt daily. When the mother of her old lover, Donovan, calls and asks for help, Samantha reluctantly agrees.
Donavan's body has been found shot in his car. The Washington,DC police are calling it a car jacking, but his mom believes there was more to his death. After the autopsy, Samantha also believes this ex-Ranger's death was a more complicated murder. Samantha investigates with a couple of interesting policeman, delving into a long held secret of friendly fire and more from the Ranger's service in Afghanistan. Tensions are taught as Samantha must also work with Donovan's wife, who knows of Samantha's and Donovan's past affair.
This book is psychological, revealing the mind set of everyone involved. It also becomes fast passed as Samantha finds answers and finds herself in great danger too. Good start to a new series. Relationships are set up to continue a few of these characters in this series, which should be exciting reading.
    "Speak: Woof"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes and this was a daily deal, so double the value! Fast pace and a full mystery, note: must use the new 1.25x speed to get the impact author intended.
What other book might you compare A Deeper Darkness to and why?
Lots of characters which reader does very well. This has a bare hint of Karin Slaughter's medical examiner without the awful horror that Karin includes in her stories.
Note to author: please add more humor to this series.
What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She is a pro and has only gotten so much better in recent reads. A must is Tammy Hoag's Still Waters. J.B. is our heroine in that story.

I Love Carl Hiaasen, but man this was the hard
What disappointed you about Powder Burn?
I cant rate this book because I was to bored to get past the first 3 hours. If you love Carl Hiaasen stay away from this book. Its starts slow and I think that's the way it will continue. This book was a slow starter like the Lords of Discipline
Would you ever listen to anything by Carl Hiaasen and Bill Montalbano again?
Not both this book was too boring to complete. I have listened to all of Carl Hiassen books longer than 8 hours and I loved them all, this one was just not for me.
Would you be willing to try another one of Robert Ramirezs performances?
I didn't finish the book so I don't feel like I should rate his performance
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Powder Burn?
I was to bored to finish the first half let alone the complete boo.
    Any additional comments?
    Can I have a refund?
    Darker
Would you consider the audio edition of Powder Burn to be better than the print version?
not sure, since I did not read the print version, but the audio was great
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, fast paced, no long rambling speeches
Have you listened to any of Robert Ramirezs other performances before? How does this one compare?
    good
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    tough question, not really sure
    Not Much Hiassen Here
Would you try another book from Carl Hiaasen and Bill Montalbano and/or Robert Ramirez?
After reading other books by Hiaasen, I am convinced that he simply put the finishing touches and added a few funny parts to this tome after Montalbano had finished.
What could Carl Hiaasen and Bill Montalbano have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I would have had Montalbano tell Hiaasen the structure of the story, and then have Carl alone write the book in his style.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Robert Ramirez?
The idea of having a young Latino read the book was a good one, but It seems that you need someone with a greater range of tone in his voice. It needs to be read by someone older, and with a more gruff voice.
What character would you cut from Powder Burn?
    No Idea.
    do not buy
I've loved every single Carl hiaasen book that I've read, until now. This book is garbage.
Didn't seem like a Hiaasen book
Usually Hiaasen has some comedic characters that give the novel so light parts. This is a dark novel and not good reading for me.

Wonderful Brett Battles stand alone novel!
When I find an thriller author I really like I purchase all of his/her novels. I recently purchased No Return and Rewinder to complete my Brett Battles library. (I have the complete works of quite a number of other authors including Vince Flynn, Ben Coes, Brad Thor, Karin Slaughter, Brad Taylor, Bob Meyer, Michael Connelly, Patricia Cornwell, Brad Metzler, Mark Dawson, Brian Haig, David Baldacci, Greg Iles, Charles Todd, Daniel Silva, Dalton Fury, Tom Clancy, Harlan Coben, Lee Child, Lisa Gardner, Mark Greaney, Michael Koryta, Nelson DeMille, T. R. Regan, and a few others. I prefer the audiobooks, but I buy the KIindle versions when the books ar not available from Audible. It is little wonder that my Audible library is approaching 900 books and my Kindle library is over 500 books.)
No Return is set in the desert town of China Lake, California where Brett Battles grew up and where a Naval air base is located. The major plot line is about a plane that crashed near the town with the pilot being misidentified by the Navy. The subplot is about a death that occurred in the town while the main character was growing up there. As usual with Brett Battles the characters are well developed and the story has lots of suspense.
The narrator is Scott Brick who also narrates Brett Battles entire Jonathan Quinn series. Scott Brick is one of many excellent narrators, and he happens to be my favorite.
In addition to the Quinn series, Battles has another great series named Project Eden which is narrated by McLeod Andrews, another excellent narrator. He also has the short Logan Harper series which is not as good as well as being co-writer of the two book Alexandra Poe tseries which I find disappointing.
One of the really nice aspects of the the more recent Battles novels that are narrated by Scott Brick is that they end with a 15 to 20 minute interview of Battles by Brick.
