    Publisher's Summary:
John Wells goes undercover in Saudi Arabia in a cutting-edge novel of modern suspense from the #1 New York Times best-selling author.
John Wells may have left the CIA, but it hasn't left him. A mysterious call brings a surprise meeting with the aged monarch of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah. "My kingdom is on a precipice," he tells Wells. "Powerful factions are plotting against me, and my own family is in danger. I don't know who I can trust, but I'm told I can trust you."
Reluctantly, and with the secret blessing of the CIA, Wells goes undercover; but the more he learns, the more complicated things become, and soon he, too, is unsure whom to trust, in Saudi Arabia or Washington. One thing, however, is clear: If the conspirators prevail, it will mean more than the fall of a monarch-it may be the beginning of the final conflagration between America and Islam.

    Curses! Islamists foiled again!
There are plenty of good guy American vs Islamist terrorist books out. This one has a fairly unbelievable plot with a few holes but I still found it good for its entertainment value. Thrillers like this are just plain fun to listen to. If you enjoy Tom Clancy, Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, you will likely enjoy this author. The action is pretty much non-stop so you won't want to put it down. Enjoy!
    Chop, Chop Square!!
Spy novels are not normally my thing. Years ago a good friend brought me "A Faithful Spy" by AB. I liked it a lot. Even though the Rag Heads are still the bad guys, AB kind of gives you there side of the story. John Wells is an American, but converted to Moslem, when he was working underground with them. He speaks Arabic and is the first person the government turns to when they have a problem in the Middle East.
This book is mostly about Saudi Arabia. You get a short history and an explanation of there government system. The historical part of the book was what I liked best, as I am always trying to understand how different people think, especially those hostile to Americans.
Here are some interesting facts about Saudi Arabia, as told by AB: They have Religious Police and Saudi's can be arrested, tortured and killed for not being religious enough. Unmarried women are not allowed on beaches. The square in the capital is nicknamed the Chop Chop Square, because they chop off more then One Hundred Heads a year. Of the One Hundred Heads only half are Saudi citizens. The King believed that the sun went around the earth up until 1985, when a Saudi astronaut told the king, he saw the earth orbiting the sun. Even though unemployment numbers are extremely high, Saudi's don't do manual labor, as they feel that is beneath them, so they have thousands of immigrants do the manual labor. Women are not allowed to drive.
John Wells tries to explain why some Muslems are not dangerous, by saying that he does not believe everything in the Koran. He says to his friend who is a christian, "Do you really believe that Christ was risen from the grave?". This one statement convinced me that we will never get along with the Middle East. In this book are lots of examples of Muslims who believe as Mohammed preached, there is only room for one religion in this world.
My favorite AB book is still his first "The Faithful Spy".

    Tedious
What disappointed you about The Hunt for Atlantis?
The heroes were initially developed well but somewhere along the line they were all lobotomized. The plot dragged along because our heroes fell into every obvious trap there was. The characters themselves were not too bad and that was the only thing that kept me going to the end. I have read other McDermott pieces and was disappointed.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Hunt for Atlantis?
There are too many to mention and all of the actions scenes were painfully long and predictable once you realized the formula.
    Any additional comments?
Do not waste a credit on this one folks.
    No Maturity
I've listened to the first half and there have been many times I felt myself becoming less intelligent for listening to the dialog. Each time I felt like turning it off, but it seemed it was still better than nothing. I've finally come to the realization that "nothing" IS better than this. The characters act like what you'd expect from 14 year-old boys.
The story itself is entertaining, but I can't get past the dialog.

I actually enjoy books with some intellectual basis (because I am a total geek), but want trash that doesn;t make me think too hard after a hard day of sorting through Estate tax statutes or Medicaid rules. This seemed perfect- murder mystery set in a backdrop of exotic locales and archeological discussion. I could not have been more wrong.

    Critic Reviews:

"Some of the grittiest crime-writing in the field etched in the darkest of hues and with dialogue so sharp you might cut yourself." (Independent)
"Hard-hitting prose with a bone-dry humour and characters you can genuinely believe in, Stuart MacBride's Logan McRae series of novels are a real treat." (Simon Kernick)

Like the Logan MacCrae series? You'll like this.
More of the same smart but gritty detective work from Logan MacCrae in this book. The toxic atmosphere in the station is still there, as are the life-like relationships with the other officers. The raw (but funny) Scottish street humour is also present, along with a healthy dose of colloquial Scottish terminology, which might cause some head-scratching for non-Brits. Overall a good read.
    Another Great Novel
I am on #7 in the Logan McRae series. Again I'm very impressed by plot and character development. On to #8!
    Addictive listening !
Loving these Aberdeen based crime novels. Each one becomes more interesting in the development of the characters. Inspector Steele's wit and humor keeps things light. Brilliantly done!
    Very average
I've listened to most of this series, but kind of gave up because the formula started getting a bit annoying... the Bosses yell, and don't listen, the papers blame the cops for not solving crimes the day they happen, and Logan never, ever gets a day off. Of course, there are some great parts to this series - primary among that is the funny characters, like Steel, but i guess the annoying parts just got too repetitive for me. Anyway, it's been a couple years so i thought i'd try another, and i'm kind of sorry i did. The formula is still the same, and this one wasn't quite as funny. And the previous narrator seemed better to me as well.
    difficult to understand the narrator
Would you try another book from Stuart MacBride and/or Steve Worsley?
I love reading macbride books but found the 3 I have just purchased in audible format impossible to understand with any ease due to the strong accent of the narrators. Having to replay constantly to understand dialogue is frustrating.

    Man-Apes and a new ally
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have enjoyed not only the book but all of the "Chess Team" novels. I would recommend this and the other books to anyone who like Special Force/Super Solider and/or Science Fiction books. This book blends the Super Soldier and the Sciencie Science Fiction genres to create a well developed story and characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
King-He is the lead and is trying to deal with family issues on top of heading up an elite super soldier force all at the same time. He is Rambo and Bill Cosby's love child.
What about Jeffrey Kafers performance did you like?
Kafer brought an easy listening style to a rapid action sequenced and multi-arena story lined book. He had to make each character as well as each storyline separate and distinguishable at the same time since at some parts of the book all the story lines and characters were happening/talking over each other.
    AWESOME! ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!
The Chess team is exactly what a spec ops team is all about. plain and simple.
if you are looking for a great series this is it!
It's awesome! well worth the read or in this case the listen! I have become a fan boy of jeremy robinson and his books! To be honest it been hard to find a series that can hold my attention and cause me to remember each character and its history.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
An aging but formidable strip-club owner, Claudiu "Manco" Kapak, has been robbed by a masked gunman as he placed his cash receipts in a bank's night-deposit box. Enraged, he sends his half-dozen security men out to find a suspect who is spending lots of cash and is new enough to Los Angeles not to know he was robbing a gangster.
Their search leads them to Joe Carver, an innocent but hardly defenseless newcomer who evades capture and sets out to make Kapak wish he'd chosen someone else.
Meanwhile, the real culprit, Jefferson Davis Falkins, and his new girlfriend, Carrie, seem to believe they've found a whole new profession: robbing Manco Kapak. Lieutenant Nick Slosser, the police detective in charge of the puzzling and increasingly violent case, has his own troubles, including worries about how he's going to afford to send the oldest child of each of his two bigamous marriages to college without making their mothers suspicious.
As this odd series of difficulties explodes into a triple killing, Carver finds himself in the middle of a brewing gang war over Kapak's little empire, while Falkins and Carrie journey into territory more strange and violent than either had imagined.

Not A Waste Of Time But...
This is like a collection of short stories...Maybe even comic book stories. Each is interesting and they do hang together... And it's not really boring. But I kept expecting something greater than the sum of these parts would happen and less did. There are so many books to listen to and I'm a tad disappointed that I spent this much of it on "Strip".
Still it made my morning gym visits less uncomfortable and wasn't bad company during household chores. Not sure that's a great recommendation though. Plus there are brothers in this plot and Michael Kramer seemed stymied over how to make their tongues seem different enough to keep track. On the other hand they, like most of these characters, really weren't much deeper than comic book characters so, maybe he didn't care about them, so... neither did I.
On balance? Pass on this one. It's not a waste of time but....
    Better and Better
I have always been a Thomas Perry fan. He writes formulaically and that is not a knock if done well. But how an author can produce novels for 18 years and scripts for years before that and suddenly step up his game like this is beyond me. This is uber Elmore Leonard but even better than the beloved Elmore. "Strip" is so good on many levels.
There is Karma. People get what they deserve and even if this doesn't happen in real life, it is tremendously satisfying. But what do the characters in "Strip" deserve, exactly? You think you know when you start out. There is the innocent man under attack, the nasty small-time gangster, the thief, his put-upon girlfriend, a bodyguard, a collection of hoods. Good guys-Bad guys, right? Not so fast. Perry lovingly unveils these characters until you become very fond of some people you assumed you would despise-- and then they disappoint you, these fleshed-out characters that you have become invested in.

The past is never over. It just gets dusty.
Lisa Grant was a rising star in a prestigious law firm in Lexington, Kentucky, when the firm went bankrupt and she lost her job. With an ailing mother to care for, she takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. Scott is as disagreeable as he is sexy, and Lisa suspects the only reason she got the job was Scotts fond feelings for her mother, who treated him well when he was just a farmhand on the Grants large horse farm while Lisa was growing up.
After she misses an important court date, Lisa doesnt get any special treatment from Scott. As punishment, he sends her to organize cold-case files in the basement of the courthouse. What Lisa expects to be a mind-numbingly boring task turns into anything but when a missing-persons case draws her attention. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family father, mother, and two children disappeared without a trace more than 28 years ago. Except thats not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin.
Before Lisa can learn more, a series of catastrophes strikes close to home, and she realizes that finding the photo has put her in terrible danger. Determined to uncover the truth, she confides in Scott, and their relationship develops into something beyond that of employer and employee. Together they unravel a terrifying web of criminal connections that could shatter what Lisa knows of her past. And its clear someone will go to shocking lengths to make sure certain secrets stay hidden.

    I Managed to Finish Listening
This book would be much better if it had been edited to half its length. There is far too much extraneous stuff, especially about what Lisa is thinking, feeling, and/or how her breathing is quickening. Come on! I'd like to know if any real person would be as aware of her every emotion, feeling, or quivering as Lisa seems to be. In fact, the character of Lisa, in spite of all the feedback about her response to everything, is not really well developed. I suspect that the author wants Lisa to come across as a strong, appealing woman. I came away feeling that I knew too much about Lisa's responses and not enough about what kind of a person she is. The character of Scott could use some rewrite as well. Rude and manly don't do it. There needs to be more to make the reader want to root for Scott to win over Lisa.
Then there's the plot or lack of it. When I read the reviews of this book, I thought the plot line had tremendous potential. When I got through the book, I thought that there has to be a better way to develop the plot. I am still confused about how some of the plot is supposed to have taken place. I would not have bothered reading this book had I known how boring it would be. I hung in there just to find out how the author would explain the mysteries. It was very unsatisfying.
Would give it 10 stars if I could!
This is one of the best books I have listened to on audible in a long time. The story is fantastic and the chemistry between the two main characters, Scott and Lisa is amazing! Narrator did a great job too.

    Good but with problems
This is a good page turner/book to read on a vacation. Basically put it's not the brightest of novels. The science fiction, while sound in the reality, is a little vague in terms of the why's and what's. But if you suspend your disbelief enough it all comes together in a nice wash of dumb euphoria.
There are 2 problems I had with the book:
    1. the "good guys" speak and deduct like genius' that really only serve the plot which is slightly annoying. Some of their reasoning skills come down to the reader thinking, "really? because that's infering quite a bit and there are many more solutions that counter that. On top of their genius there are HUGE mistakes made that seem illogical for them to make. I won't spoil anything here but keep in mind, if you understand how a technology works why would you allow it to basicially work in the enemies favor?
    2. The book, while trying to keep the female lead strong and intelligent fails to due so in most respects in order to keep the male lead the main protagonist. She says smart things and we are told she's smart, but then we have this male protagonist with zero experience in the things he's dealing with deducting for her and otherwise making her look dumb. He's always telling her what is happening and she's always dumbly following and saying, "I don't know, what do you think?" It comes across as chauvinistic in my opinion, and I'm male.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a quick fun read, but don't expect to remember this one as it's poor character development makes it forgettable.
    Unspeakably surprised; No regrets
I chose to buy this book for the sole reason that Jeff Gurner reads it. I had never heard of the author nor the particular title. I finished Jeff Gurner's other reads, namely Daemon and Freedom (TM), and was blown away by his performances. On that single criterion, I chose this title, along with the help of another reviewer which said the book was a wild ride.
Aside from the predictably fantastic narrator, the book was shorter than the other books I've purchased, by about half the length.

Killing Orders, V.I. Warshawskis third adventure, starts when her great-aunt Rosa summons the detective to her cold suburban home. Rosa made V.I.s childhood miserable and the detective resents the command to help her aunt prove she didn't embezzle five million dollars from a local Dominican priory.

But Warshawski continues to follow every lead, even when they point to some pretty unorthodox conclusions: Perhaps the Dominicans are covering up a financial scandal. Maybe the whole conspiracy is under the patronage of an international conglomerate, or of Don Pasquale, king of the Chicago mob. Worst of all, someone whos close to Vic could be involved her darkly handsome English lover, Roger Ferrant, or even Aunt Rosa herself.

I LOVE SUSAN ERICKSAN!! I HAVE YET TO LISTEN TO A BOOK THAT SHE HAS READ THAT I HAVENT ENJOYED! SHE DOES AN AWESOME JOB. SARA PARETSKY KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT WONDER WHAT WILL HAPPEN!
    Love it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this title! Although my favorite narrator is Jean Smart for this character, I still found that the readers voice was good and easily understood. This novel is full of suspense and action which I absolutely love! This is the 2nd audio book by this author I've experienced and am now hooked on the entire series! If you love detective novels with a smart-a$$, strong willed, kick-a$$ and take names type of character then you'll be in absolute heaven! Also, many mystery novels I read/hear end abruptly and never give you much aftermath information; Paretsky does!!! I love hearing how the characters end up, and this book is a good example. The family component in the novel is also awesome, since it gives you a better understanding of detective VI's history and upbringing. VI's temper, however, is something I had to get use to. Being a very relaxed type of person I couldn't relate to her getting upset at certain times. It seemed like whenever I would have gotten upset she was fine and when I didn't care she'd get upset. However it didn't ruin the story, just made me look at my own feelings more, HAHAHA!
    Killing Orders
Could hardly stop listening to this story. Paretsky packs a fast pace action filled story with a human touch. Susan Ericksen did a great job narrating this book. Almost feel as if I have been to Chicago listening to the description in the story. Will be looking for more books by this author and reader.
Good tone and characters, ending needed work
I enjoyed the characters and thier interactions, but the ending felt rushed and slap-dash. There were some plot holes and inconsistentcies in the beginning and middle of the book but they were minor and easily ignored. Overall a good read.
    Don't waste your time
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The author succeeded in making the protagonist one of the most disagreeable characters I've ever read. V.I. Warshawski is arrogant, foul-mouthed, and unreasonably confrontational about everything. By the end of the book, I was actually rooting for the mob assassin to do her in.

this was a three star book to me,
I think that Deep Freeze was a good book, one that i did not want to put down as far as the suspense, yet the demented mind of the killer for a romance book was a little much, I would not have put this book in the romance section i would have put this in the mystery & Thriller section, not much romance in this book although i did enjoy this book i found myself fast forwarding my ipod through the killers demented sections, If you are looking for a romance suspense you might want to look else where for the romance,
    Deep Freeze
    Excellent!
    Don't waste your time
This finally started to hold my attention after about the 7th hour, but at that point I think it was because I wanted to see if I guessed right at what was coming next. The storyline was completely preditcable and the charcters were flat and uninteresting. Save your credits & time. Don't bother with this one
    My first Lisa Jackson book
I received a paper back copy from my cousin on Christmas and started listening to the audiobook towards the end of January I couldn't put the book down or stop listening.
    good but.....
good but way too long, too wordy, not good enough. too much extra unnecessary words.
    should have been tightened up.

Zachary Flynn is off to Ireland to escort an old friend, Sean O'Riley, home to Rhode Island after a bout of illness in the land of his birth. Zach has no idea he'll be coming home with far more than old friends. While Zach doubts that murder was intended, he must accept the possibility, since Sean's business partner has gone missing. Caer, a woman with an agency in Ireland, knows that Sean's life is in danger, and she takes on the role of Sean's nurse to stay close to him. Zach doesn't trust her anymore than he trusts the third partner in the sailing and charter business, his wife, the cops, or the man in the moon.
But if Sean is to make another Christmas, especially after receiving a strange gift in the mail, he knows he has to find the truth behind the mist that comes in the night, and the strange whispers of ancient Ireland that tease him in the darkness.

    it was great!!
my new favorite of hers! loved the Irish folklore!
great job Heather! keep these coming! Especially this narrator
Not as great as the other 2 Flynn books
I really liked the first 2 series of the Flynn trilogy but I felt this wasn't great... The narration by Phil Gigante was amazing as always.
Flynn Brothers meets the Luck of the Irish!
This tale from the Irish lineage is my favorite of the trilogy. Great twists and turns. Happy to see the old tales wound up in a good mystery!
    Not awful..
..but it does not live up to expectations based on the first two in the series. The female lead is completely underdeveloped and the chemistry between characters is poor at best.
    Far wierder than expected
I don't mind occasional psychic ability. I'm not exactly fond of characters who see ghosts, but I can tolerate that if necessary. But this book goes way beyond those lines. Had I known what this story was about, I would never has bought the 3rd book in the trilogy.
