    Great story, funny Ausrtalian accent
This was my first James Rollins audio book and it won't be my last. The narration was very good with the exception of the "Aussie" accent, but it wasn't bad, more funny than anyhing else and easily forgiven. It's taken a while to find an author who is as engaging as Rollins in terms of the characters, and the story. The narrator can take a lot of credit for that as well, so all in all I'd happily recommend this to anyone that likes a Dean Koontz type of read.
    Entertaining. A Good Read
I have read most of James Rollins books, and so I decided to give this older book a try and I wasnt disappointed. This was a gripping story which makes us wonder about the things that man has yet to explore and how it would affect each of us. James Rollins imagination is limitless no matter his subject. Not his best book, but by far an entertaining and thought-provoking read.
    Claustrophobics: Avoid this book!
All other thriller-lovers might want to give this audiobook a listen ... especially since "Subterranean" is James Rollins first novel. As other reviewers have noted, this work does not show Rollins writing in his top form; but, rest assured, he keeps getting better and better. If, like me, you enjoy watching an author develop, then you should start watching Rollins with "Subterranean" ... unless you have claustrophobia. Claustrophobics should probably avoid Rollins altogether: Many of Rollins' novels take place under ground or underwater, in confined, dark spaces (not surprising, since Rollins is an amateur spelunker and scuba diver!). They provide plenty of thrills and chills for anyone with a moderate tolerance for far-fetched plots. Yes, "Subterranean" does postulate a slightly improbable scenario -- marsupial hominids (oops! Sorry, spoiler-haters.), undiscovered until now -- but, as Hamlet said, There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. In his subsequent novels, Rollins unfolds many other fascinating, unlikely-yet-possible speculations. If you enjoy Preston/Child, then you will, most likely, enjoy Rollins.
As for the reader, John Meagher, I say: Give him a try. At first his tenor voice put me off a bit, I admit. However, he turns out to have pretty good acting skills; and, like Rollins, he gets better. I have to take the Australian reviewer's word for Meagher's unconvincing Australian accent (it sounded O.K. to me); but, hey, Australian accents are hard to do!
Not a bad thriller, for a first novel.
    Always a good story
Another success for Mr. Rollins. Enjoyed the listening and the narrator is ok once you get used to the tone of his voice. He does do a good job at keeping you interested.

    Publisher's Summary:
Grady Adams lives a simple, solitary life deep in the Colorado mountains. Here the 35-year-old carpenter works out of a converted barn, crafting exquisite one-of-a-kind furniture. There's little about this strong yet gentle man to suggest the experiences that have alienated him from the contemporary world. But that is about to change. One day, while hiking, Grady spots a pair of stunningly beautiful furred animals unlike anything he's ever seen. They flee the instant they detect his presence, but the mystery of that brief encounter remains. In the days ahead, Grady will approach the creatures again, gaining their trust but coming no closer to solving their mystery. For this he enlists the help of an old friend, veterinarian Camellia "Cammy" Rivers, who, in turn, is stunned - and enchanted - by Grady's new "pets." But while Grady and Cammy carefully observe these enigmatic animals for clues to their origin, they, too, are being watched. Soon Grady's home and hundreds of square miles of surrounding wilderness will be placed under quarantine by Homeland Security. And Grady, Cammy, and the two creatures they've come to feel they must protect at all costs find themselves virtual prisoners - and the unwilling focus of an army of biologists, naturalists, and research scientists. But it's a stunning event no one could have foreseen that convinces Grady and Cammy to do the unthinkable: to escape with the two creatures on a riveting race for freedom.

    Lifeless
I have read virtually every Dean Koontz book for the last 20 years and must say the last few novels I have read (Darkest Evening of the Year, Your Heart Belongs to Me and Breathless) have been more than disappointing. Other than the Odd Thomas series, the more recent works have been basic formulas reworked from other older books, stale antagonists and gaping plot gaps.
Breathless held much potential and then turned into poorly veiled commentary about theology. The characters were likeable enough, but 90% of the novel was development with a rushed, poorly conceived climax (if it can be calledd a climax at all). I remain a loyal Koontz fan, but expect much more from my favorite author.
    Not his best
As a longtime fan of Koontz, I have always marveled at his story telling mastery. This book starts out promisingly. As with most of his books, numerous story lines are introduced, and the reader has the natural expectation that eventually they will blend into a single strong narrative. As I grew ever closer to the end of the book, and the story lines had not yet merged, I wondered how Koontz could end the book with so few pages to go. Well, the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying. I felt somehow cheated.

    Members Reviews:
    Good story; terrible narration.
Love Audible books, listening to 1 every week. However listening to this story is like watching grass grow. The English accent narrator is not suited for an action/adventure story. "We're going to kill you," comes across as "Let's meet for tea and crumpets, shall we?" I am a fan of John Gilstrap but in audio form is painfully tedious.
    Poor Narration
It is hard to separate the awful narration from the otherwise acceptable plot. At times, I thought my MP3 player had run out of battery, then realized it was just another interminable pause in the reading, as if the narrator had run out of breath. I can't imagine how this prissy-voiced reader was selected to read an American action thriller. It is so distracting that I almost gave up on the book, but was on a long drive without other options.
    Narration detracts from excellent story
This tight, fast-paced story with interesting characters holds your attention. Though somewhat one-dimenisonal, the characaters have a way of interacting that makes their personal relationships seem real.
John Gilstrap's dialogue is well-written, but
Jeremy Gage distracts as the narrator. His voice grates. Regardless of which character he represents, he always sounds like an old New England school teacher who lives in over-heated rooms with several cats. Worst of all is his penchant for ending sentences on a rising note as if he has a question.
Listen to the sample before you order and give some thought as to whether you might also have a problem with the narration.
    Good book; bad performance
Would you try another book from John Gilstrap and/or Jeremy Gage?
John Gilstrap writes a good taut, fast-paced story in No Mercy that I would like to read. Unfortunately, reader Jeremy Gage ruins it as an audio book. I don't know anything about him, but he sounds like he is quite elderly and reading for small children. He reads in a "sing-songy" voice that never varies pitch, timbre or pace. He doesn't change anything when speaking as different characters so it is hard to tell who is speaking among the characters, even between men and women. His English or maybe, New Englandish accent would be more fitting for an Agatha Christie novel.

    Glued To My Seat!
I read the third installment, Dying For Revenge, not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised to discover this one had been released. All I can say is I hope this is not the end of the Giddian saga because the ending left me with more questions than answers. Arizona was even slicker and oilier than I remember and I thought she finally got a taste of what she so richly deserved. . I remember her from Thieve's Paradise and because there were references to that time, I actually went out and acquired another copy of that book to fill in what I may have missed years ago. For two days, this book had my attention. EJD, keep it coming. I'm no prude but those fans who are would probably approve of this latest installment as it lacked a lot of the graphic sexcapades in Waking With Enemies. Still, the scenes were hot, as usual and I can't wait to hear what happens to Giddian next.

    Publisher's Summary:
Tempe and Lieutenant Ryan had accompanied the recently discovered remains of a missing heiress from Montreal to the Chicago morgue. Suddenly, Tempe was accused of mishandling the autopsy -- and the case. Someone made an incriminating phone call. Within hours, the one man with information about the call was dead. Back in Montreal, the corpse of a second elderly woman was found in the woods, and then a third.
Seamlessly weaving between Tempe's present-tense terror as she's held captive and her memory of the cases of these murdered women, Reichs conveys the incredible devastation that would occur if a forensic colleague sabotaged work in the lab. The chemistry between Tempe and Ryan intensifies as this complex, riveting tale unfolds. Reichs is writing at the top of her game.
    Members Reviews:
Wow, pretty sure this is the in the series
This is by far my favorite book in the series. There was the usual science, the wonderful Brennan and Yeah, Andrew Ryan. This novel had more character development than in other recent books in the series. I loved every minute of it. I rarely just listen for an entire weekend but I couldn't stop. I love the narrator who brought the characters to life. Sad that we'll have to wait another year for the next one.
Did I read a different book?
I listened to this book of Reichs' despite several ho-hum reviews. All I can say is I found it engaging although a little predictable. I thought other reviewers comments were way off base. First the story is of a forensic anthropologist being gaslighted by someone, so there has to be some level of detail about the situation explained to the reader. I thought that she did a good job in doing that and potentially educating the public about good and bad forensics. As for the French, well merde, it does take place in Quebec, and I guess it was excessive, if you're a second grader. No greater than one word in 1000 was in French, and most were immediately translated. Probably would raise complaints from the native Quebecois about not having enough to make it authentic! I like this for the light escape that I expect from Reichs' books. I would rate it better than many of her others.
    best bones novel
I love the bones books. I have listened to them all. Like its tv counterpart, the down side; 1, the main character rarely or never has fulfilling relationships, or sex. 2. The stories have a similar plot. The good, the Author really draws you in. after reading one of her books, you feel that you are the main character, you feel that you have been where she has been, tasted what she has tasted and been hurt (without actually getting hurt). The science woven in is my favorite part, and much of it is probably the real kind of science, not sci fi. My other favorite part is the rich culture. The sometimes French phrases, or Spanish phrases, or the descriptions of a persons French sounding contrived. I generally only listen to a book once, but it has been about 6 months and I am lonely for a good novel, so, I am going to listen to it again starting today. Btw.. if you listen to it, you will be done in a day, because you will not be able to stop listening to it.
    Loved it!
I think this is one of Kathy Reichs' best. Even when I figured out what had happened (in the last hour of the "read") I was still thoroughly engaged in finding out how things would resolve. There is NOT too much French.

    Members Reviews:
    Superb
I just finished this Brian Haig's thriller. I have rarely given a thriller a 5 star, even a good one but this novel definitely got my highest rating. It is author's finest work yet. It is a thriller masterpiece in all aspects: the story is captivating, composition and flow are excellent, research is superb, characters are euthentic, ..oh and the wit, the classic wit of the writer was the greatest sweetner. Moreover, to me, knowing that the story is based on true account just added another dimension to the experience.
And don't get me wrong: I love Sean Drummond, the writer main character in the previous series, and I thought I'd miss this funny fellow in this book. Turned out not as much as I thought.
To me, this novel was gripping, insightful and highly entertaining. Scott Brick, as always, did a masterful job.
    Enjoy it.
I hesitated and I was wrong.
I have read most if not all of Brian Haig's books and I looooovvvveee Scott Brick as a narrator so I was planning to buy this when I first saw it in the catalog. Then I read the description and didn't think I was interested. So I moved on. Then I circled back around a time or two until finally one day I bought it without really paying attention.
I'm so glad I did! The story was not what I thought it was going to be; it was so much better. Scott Brick as usual turns in a stellar performance. The plot is compelling, and sadly believable. I wasted a lot of time not reading this book - get it today and see for yourself!
    Phenomenal, thrilling, mesmerizing
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunted to be better than the print version?
Yes, Scott Brick's narration brings the characters to life. He had me 'living' the story as he narrated. The narration turned this from a 2-dimensional read to a 3-dimensional experience. Mr. Brick is very gifted. He is able to bring the many personalities in the story to life in a way that - as you listen to him - you understand that this is what the author wanted you to to experience as you read his story.
What other book might you compare The Hunted to and why?
Up Country by Nelson DeMille. Although it is fictionalized, it too is based on real life events that DeMille lived through. The substance of the book when combined with the superb narration puts you into the moment, allowing you to experience the terrain, the tension, the politics, the characters and the lives of the participants and victims of the war from all sides.
Which character as performed by Scott Brick was your favorite?
An unfair question, since the story is broader than just a character - but the top pick would be Alex.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes - there were many such moments. From the first escape scene in the restaurant to the final victory.
    Any additional comments?
This book has gotten me hooked on Audible. I used to be an occasional listener.

Intrigue, Suspense and Hide and Seek
Jane Whitefield knows how to make people disappear. How she does it is part of the reason this novel is so fascinating. Equally intriguing is her client is this adventure, a beautiful con artist ho stole millions in the S&L scandals in the 90's.
However, the degree of difficulty is dramatically reduced by Whitfield's endless cache of vable fake licences and legitimate credit cards of her many aliases. She is as resourseful and invisible to the public eye as Jack Reacher, as deadly as the Gray Man, and as invincible as Mitch Rapp. I tend to shy away from super hero series.
Joyce Bean is simply remarkable with all the voices.
Thomas Perry is one of the best authors of our time. Dance for the Dead is well worth the time.
    *****5 Stars for Thomas Perry
Once again Jane Whitefield is at her best. Thomas Perry has a winner, there is no more attractive character than Jane Whitefield
    Good book!
This was the last of three books in this series and it didn't disappoint. If you haven't read the others, wait to read this one- this is a series that is best read in order. Love Thomas Perry's writing.
Kept us on the edge of our seats.
My husband and I enjoyed this together and separately. It's a great story. There are some very evil characters in this book.
Perry is better than this book offers
I have thoroughly enjoyed almost everything T. Perry has written. Inventive plots, fast dialog, and intriguing characters are all to be found in his books.
While Jane Whitefield is truly and intriguing character, this book doesn't take much advantage of that. This is mostly confection without a whole lot to sink your teeth into. Yes, there are both tension and twists in the plot, but they don't really carry the reader anywhere that contains those wonderful surprises that we all love in good books.
One of Perry's trademarks is his ability to turn his plots into puzzles that the reader is compelled to figure out before the bad guys do. "Dance for the Dead" had some of that but just not enough to make it a 4 or 5 star listen.
Re the narrator: Ms. Bean has a wonderful timbre to her voice when narrating a woman's or child's role. But when she is reading as a man, her throat seems to tighten up and you could swear that she is recovering from laryngitis

    Publisher's Summary:
Hours after throwing a third birthday party for their twins Kathy and Kelly in their Connecticut home, Margaret and Steve Frawley return home from a dinner in New York to discover the police in the house, their daughters missing, and an eight million dollar ransom note. The Frawleys meet the kidnapper's demands, but the abandoned car they're led to contains only Kelly, the body of the driver, and a suicide note, saying he had inadvertently killed Kathy and dumped her body in the ocean.
At the private memorial Mass for Kathy, Kelly tugs Margaret's arm and says that her sister Kathy "wants to come home right now." More unexplainable occurrences indicate that Kelly is in touch with Kathy, but no one except Margaret believes that Kathy is still alive. As Kelly's warnings become increasingly specific and alarming, however, FBI agents set out on a search for the kidnappers as Kathy's life hangs by a thread.
Delving into the well-documented but still unexplained phenomenon of twin telepathy, worldwide #1 best seller Mary Higgins Clark takes us deep into the minds of her characters while lifting us to the heights of suspense.
    Members Reviews:
A good story--will hold your interest throughout
This is a good mystery, written by Mary Higgins Clark, who is certainly one of the greats in this genre. This story is about a set of twins who are kidnapped, but only one gets rescued, leading to interesting plot developments that arise partly out of the mother's trust that the safe twin can feel what the other is going through and keep hope alive for finding her. Mostly it is unremarkable in other ways, a bit predictable on most levels.
However, what made it greatly interesting to me is that it was sort of a story about how often people see things or have encounters that leave them briefly wondering, then quickly dismiss them as unimportant. This entire book seemed to be circling around the numerous ways alert people misread signals and situations, passed off important clues as trivial events. It is a reminder, especially in these times, that we all probably should be more aware of what seems odd or suspicious, and not ignore unusual things we observe. That appeared to be a central part of this story--things happening that people chose to interpret as innocent events, thus prolonging the crisis.
MHC is an excellent mystery writer. I thought the narrator got off to a bad start, but quickly improved, making the book an overall good listening experience.
    Another Winner
Great read . . . . oh, I meant listen! Whether you are a fan of the author or listening to her work for the first time, you'll enjoy this book.
    A Good Plot

    Where are you now?
I have read or listened to every book she has ever written, even co-written. This was my all time favorite! Could not stop listening, she is brilliant.
    Outstanding suspense mystery!
Where Are You Now? was released in 2008 soon after Mary Higgins Clark's 80th birthday. This wonderful suspense thriller is as good of any of her earlier novels. The publisher's summary gives a good synopsis of the story, so I will nor repeat it here. Narration is excellent.
    Predictable
The good narration and likable heroin make an otherwise utterly predictable mystery tolerable. You know theres a problem when you can guess the killer the moment the character first appears in the story. There were a few enjoyable surprises along the way, but with so many points of view and so many characters, it was hard to keep track of everyone. No matter, in the end the killer was exactly who I thought it was. Oh well, this made for a pleasant enough diversion once I just decided to go with it. But if youve read this author before and are familiar with her formula, then youll likely guess the killer as well.
Why can't I ever guess the end?
I really enjoyed her book like I do all her novels. There is some heart ache in it but also a happy future. Great character development with out laboring over details. Still the Queen of modern day suspense
    Great read
Great ending. I did not see it coming. Will find more of Mary Higgins Clark books to read.

    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Lawrence Block will keep you hooting with laughter as you follow the hilarious hijinks of his incorrigible character, Bernie Rhodenbarr: notorious burglar and part-time sleuth. Trying to go legit, Bernie has taken over a secondhand bookstore in Greenwich Village, but he still can't resist stealing things when the rewards are right. Ever since he bought Barnegat Books, Bernie has been having trouble making ends meet. When a mysterious client asks him to steal a rare edition of Kipling's poetry, he seizes the opportunity to practice his criminal talents and pay his creditors. Pilfering the book is boringly easy. But delivering it is difficult - with the police and a host of shady assailants hot on his heels. A Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster, Lawrence Block packs his entertaining whodunits with plenty of action and unexpected plot twists. Richard Ferrone's gravelly voice and expert pacing will keep you glued to the tape deck as Bernie lands in one dangerous scrape after another.

    How does Bernie do it?
I don't think that I have read this one before, but I'm glad that I caught up with it now. It is somewhat more convoluted than some of the others. I often find it worth a giggle or two to see how far communications and inflation have come since the book was written. The story involves double crossing, double dealing, some godawful poetry, and a mink coat.
Richard Ferrone continues to be marvelous as Bernie Rhodenbarr.
Ferrone makes these easy burglar stories a treat
    The Narration makes the book!
The story is fine but Ferrone makes the character come to life.
    Bernie the best
The characters are wonderfully realized by Mr Block in one the best books in a great series. Mr Ferrone's reading brings the characters to life: he's a very good reader.
    How about something new
Bernie steals, Bernie finds dead body (or not but it's there) rest of book Bernie evades cops and murder charge then wala Bernie proves he didn't really kill anybody oh and the cop pockets some cash....REALLY getting old.
    Remember that dead horse?
    A great Bernie mystery
What other book might you compare The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling to, and why?
I'm a big fan of the Bernie mysteries. They're kind of light - due to the relaxed, friendly persona of the protagonist; but always well written, with great meandering dialogue, and cleverly researched themes.
I'd contradict another reviewer who called this series 'samey'. Yes, they are about a burglar who gets involved in murder mysteries, so they're as samey as any other serial mystery character. It's the well explored theme of each story that separates the books, for example the work of Kipling is explored here in a very interesting way. And the husky noir-ish voiced narrator is excellent.
