Definitely one of the better ones. The story is well written and performed by the author, Christopher H. Bidmead.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Doctor Who: Logopolis?

The ending is well known and is a very powerful childhood memory when watching the show. It's just as good in written form.

The Doctor is always a favourite but the Master was well performed too. Tegan Jovanka was hard to link to Janet Fielding's performance so, if you've seen the story, expect that.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not necessarily. You could easily binge in the same way you can binge the story on DVD now but it's not a necessity here.

Tom Baker is back as the Doctor.

It's great to hear Tom Baker back in the rolw of the Doctor. I only wish it had been sooner. I recently purchased this lone CD. Here's some feedback.

1. I purchased this lone CD from Amazon at a discounted rate.

2. This story is part of a master story. While you can follow the story, it's apparent that the listener is missing out on some of the story.

3. The story format is such that the Doctor is narrating the story to Yates. I think this format lacks something from the full dramatized Big Finish stories.

4. Unfortunately Tom Baker's age is evident in his voice. It's less than his peak powerful and commanding tone.

5. The narration format and the story lead to an anticlimactic offering.

I am elated to hear Tom Baker back as the Doctor. I wish the story and format had been different. I am intrigued by the story potential (anything more would be spoilers) and I hope to complete my purchase of the series.

Solid Second Episode

This is the second in the Hornet's Nest mini-series and it gets started quite a bit faster.as the Doctor and Yates are quickly established to be "in the Nest" and then the Doctor gets in to telling how he hopped into the TARDIS to go back to 1932 for a reprieve from the Hornets in the presents. He finds them hard at work in a museum where a young dancer steals ballet shoes to do give her career a boost, little knowing that her mind is at risk.

This is a nice romp with a lot of very spooky Horror like elements that work here. The idea of Doctor Who as a Fairy Tale can almost be seen here as the young dancer's greed opens her up to the Swarm. I feel the swarm as a real threat here and the concept is terrifying the more you think about it, although as villains, this is something best done through audio. This also gives us some the back story on the Doctor's housekeeper Mrs. Wibbsey.

Charming? Yes. Doctor Who? Maybe.

Tom Baker's [Fourth] Doctor was a master of quick, quirky quips and turn-on-a-dime reaction. With a booming voice, instantly recognizable scarf, and a series of memorable facial expressions: he still is /the/ Doctor for many fans of the long running series. While all the other living Doctors from the original series have showed up in third party materials, especially the Big Finish radio productions, Baker has tended to stay aloof from the role, excepting bits here or there, since he departed in 1981. Getting any bit of Whoniverse with Tom Baker in it is a delight: Hornet's Nest was absolutely a must buy.

It IS charming and interesting. Baker's voice is magnificent. Franklin, returning as once-Captain Yates, is spot on. The foley effects and soundtrack are all top notch. The story, too, is appropriately weird and spooky and ends only after hooking you in for more (parts 2-5 of Hornet's Nest). It is just not quite Doctor Who.

The presentation has a lot to do with this. It is not an audiobook, nor is it exactly full cast. Somewhere in between. Most of the 72 minutes is taken up by either the Doctor or Yates retelling what happened to them, with a second voice or so added in during key dialogues. While I will never criticize Baker's speaking voice, it does break the weird, sporadic quirk that was a staple of his version of the Doctor. Only in one or two short spots does the cadence we are used to seep out.

The Tardis is mostly mentioned, not used (short time jumps, apparently, took place). The rest of it surrounds 7th-9th season [Third Doctor] like storyline of him being in one place for some time. It even has an [ex-]UNIT member.

Still, I chuckled at the explanation of why the Fourth Doctor got captured so often (the best way to see inside the secret fortress) and I'll have to hear more: give it time to bring out the Tardis and more "Who"-esque stories.

You Need A Better Medium

No, I don't mean communicating with spirits and all that rubish! I mean that sometimes the special effects of the day could not capture the best imagination of the scripts of these Third Doctor/ U.N.I.T. stories. A full cast radio production may be a much better medium. Jon Pertwee was especially delicious in this story - he was always at his best when confronting authority figures, and there were plenty to confront, here. I also liked how the sound effects hearkened back to the days of the first lunar expedition. Fans of the current Eleventh Doctor series on BBC that began with "The Impossible Astoronaut" may find some delight here. Just be warned that the pace of the action is a bit slower than a fan of the current T.V. series is used to. Nonetheless, this lifelong Doctor Who fan found many things to enjoy in this audio.

Male actors sound similar

Distinguishing one male character from another was difficult as the actors' voices were similar. Both I and my 8 yr-old son kept asking "who's that". This was our first Dr. Who audio title and I was looking forward to introducing the Boy to the series. He liked the plot, overall, so it's off to find another title, hopefully with better results.

Vampire alien trying to take over the world

The Narrator and the female vampire like monster who hypnotizes men to kill them and women to help her kill men and take over the world by building a new race to replace the ones that are now dead.

It kind of gave me the creeps, Michelle Ryan did a really good job with the creepy alien voice and as I listened to this on Halloween it was extra creepy.

Less than interesting story

Michelle Ryan reads it well but the story isn't as interesting as I had hoped. Not as gripping as some other Doctor Who stories on Audible.

Great Voice, Boring Story

Like all companion novels (excuse the pun)the stories widely vary in their quality. Freema's reading is wonderful but the story is boring and has virtually no plot. It sounds more like listening to an old person recant a war story with clif notes.

The Weeping

This was just an okay Doctor Who Story set on a frozen planet with strange Creatures. Mostly typical but okay. Freema Agyeman does a competent job as the material gave no opportunity to do otherwise and the writer does a good bit picking up the Doctor-Martha interactions.

Yes, if you liked Martha as a companion (or if you like Freema Agyeman as an actress) than this book is a fun supplement to her year on Doctor Who.

I love Freema Agyeman's voice, it was one of my favorite things about her as Martha on the TV show. She does a fairly good job mimicking David Tennant's vocal mannerisms too. You could almost picture another episode in your head!

The story-line is fair, but the best part about this audiobook is how it brings the TV show back to life in your mind!

A solid story well told

I was expecting a story about one of the things that happens to Martha during the Year that Never Happened. That's not what this is, but it foreshadows what will happen during Season 3 of the TV show. I didn't find the plot particularly surprising, but it was interesting and enjoyable. Freema Agyeman voices it wonderfully. She has a way of capturing the Doctor's voice without trying to do a David Tennant impersonation.

I Love Doctor Who!!!

This is just like if I was seeing the movie. Awesomely delicious.

I thought I was downloading the story of Martha as she journeyed across the earth, since that was the description listed, but it is a book about the Doctor and Martha defending clones. Not a bad story, I'm just very disappointed since its not the story I paid for or choose to listen to.

Not what I expected

From both the description, the title and the cover, I'd expected this to be about Martha's journey around the earth during the ' year that never was ', at the end of series three. I was disappointed at first but Freema Agyeman narrated so well that no could be disappointed.
