The stars align for a good story

The TARDIS takes the Doctor and Sarah close to the Mandragora Helix as they travel through the Vortex. Forced to materialise there temporarily, the TARDIS picks up an unwelcome passenger in the form of a ball of Mandragora energy, which forces the TARDIS off course to 15th century Italy.

There, Prince Giuliano is in a precarious position politically, under threat from his uncle Count Frederico, and the second, hidden threat of the Brotherhood of Demnos, a black-magic cult that Mandragora plans to use for its own ends... Caught up in political intrigue and the manipulations of a secret society, the Doctor and Sarah must prevent the annexation of Earth by the Mandragora Helix.

'The Masque of Mandragora' was an excellent TV serial, and makes the transition to the written page under the pen of its producer, Philip Hinchcliffe. The adaptation is a reasonable one, but perhaps suffers from the lack of the wonderful scenery of Portmeirion, where the serial was shot. However, the story is a strong one and makes a good transition to the novel form.

Lots happening here

This episode of the Doctor has quite a bit going on with two significant foes to be dispatched. First there is the political intrigue, a brother who is trying to steal his sibling's rule by killing said sibling and his son. Then there is the evil intelligence (the Mandragora) the Doctor has unwittingly brought with him. Its goal is (of course) to rule the universe.

The Doctor is aided by Sarah in this one, which takes place in Italy in 1492. No mention of Columbus though :) I found the political plot to be a bit distracting at times, it seemed more time was spent on it than the Mandragora. Personally I would have prefered more emphasis on the Mandragora.

All in all an OK book, and a quick read.

Masque of who?

A great, fun old Who adventure. In this novel, Doctor Who gets knocked out twice, Sarah captured four times, and then the doctor sets up a trap that kills hundreds of peasents because they were dupped into a cult. Does the Doctor feel shame or sadness? No, he just asks for a salami sandwich. A fast read, and a good one. Enjoy it for what it is.

Not my favorite

I've listened to two other Doctor/Donna stories (Beautiful Chaos and Pest Control) and this is my least favorite. I don't feel like any author has really captured Donna's voice and personality in any story I've come across and they compensate by just making her yell at the Doctor all the time. The story didn't keep me very interested either, and the whole Gandhi thing felt weird, kind of fake in a way. It has a low re-read factor.

One of my favorite Doctor Who audio books

I enjoyed the Ghandi storyline. The narrator's characterizations were nicely done. The best moment was the effect that Ghandi has in the final part of the story.

No Ghosts, only Blandness

Would you try another book from Mark Morris and/or David Troughton?

David Troughton is a decent reader, but I think I'll avoid Mark Morris in future.

Has Doctor Who turned you off from other books in this genre?

I'm still interested in soft scifi. Doctor Who is always a bit variable.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The pacing was okay.

What character would you cut from Doctor Who?

I would cut any two of the supporting characters selected at random, maybe even three. The weakness in the cast comes from a little bit of characterization spread too thin over a stock Indian Boy, medical figure, big pompous Olde Worlde Mustache, etc. Narrowing focus on a few of these characters to flesh out the tangled relationship between imperialist conquerer and oppressed people afraid of the chaos the empire will leave in its wake.

Any additional comments?

The Doctor and Ghandi would have been more interesting if they didn't get along, especially if they highlighted some of his less savory character traits. While the Doctor would admire ghandi, I think he might be frustrated with the absolutism of his ideals sometimes, and the man who blamed the Jews for not just submitting to the Holocaust is not going to see eye-to-eye with somebody who usually kills serious threats to humanity.

Most of all, though, i was annoyed because the white organic automotons are in no way ghosts. We've had LOTS of doctor who monsters that were much more ghost-like in episodes that didn't even mention ghosts.

I like doctor who stories with ghost-like things. :(

Some potential but still extremely juvenile

I never understand how the writing for the TV show is usually so brilliant and the writing for these audio novels are so mediocre.

The god awful accents she used for subsidiary characters. I couldn't finish the book because the stupid regional accents she gave the characters spoiled the story for me.

OK story and narration

The narrator is OK, but I didn't think there was enough differentiation between Martha's voice and that of the Doctor. Interesting interaction between the Doctor and Robot Twelve, possibly better than Martha's role in this story.

Introducing Sarah Jane Smith

'The Time Warrior' features two firsts: it introduces new (and, according many, best ever) companion Sarah Jane Smith, and is the first time we see the Sontarans, one of the Doctor's more popular recurring foes (in terms of appearances on-screen, only the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master beat them).

The Brigadier asks the Doctor to stay with a group of scientists who have been housed together for their own safety. Here he meets journalist Sarah Jane Smith, who is posing as her Aunt Lavinia, a noted virologist, in the hopes of getting a scoop.

As it turns out, the scientists have been kidnapped by Jingo Linx and taken back to the Middle Ages, where he has crash-landed and used his technology to travel forward for the skilled help he needs to repair his spaceship. The Doctor also heads back in the TARDIS, with Sarah stowing away...

A fun mediaeval romp with a realistically threatening alien foe, the story was a great start for the series' eleventh season. As a bonus, the book is adapted by Terrance Dicks, and it appears that he enjoyed doing it as it is a more lively adaptation than many that Mr. Dicks carried out. I particularly enjoyed the prologue, which was written especially for this book.

A Book worthy of Doctor Who Fans

This book is one of those Terrance Dicks Books which makes you enjoy each and every moment of the antics of the Doctor. Terrance Dicks is one of the best Doctor WHO authors I have come across. His books are far more realistic, believable and scientifically advanced. The Doctor seems actually like a doctor (and not a cross between a joker, time traveler, scientist and an alien as many present generation authors portray the Doctor to be).

This book is not as fascinating as the Dalek Series written by Terrance Dicks, but anyway, an exciting read. To all the Doctor WHO fans out there, you may already be knowing about the legend of the Time Warriors and where they fit into the universe timeline.

About the seller, I only have two things to say- The shipment arrived awfully late, but in perfect condition. The packing was good, since this is a tiny book (144 pages).

Lots of fun

The Doctor has a less daunting task than usual in this one. He has merely to save the Earth, rather than the entire universe. A Sontaran warrior has crash landed in the Middle Ages of Earth and is willing to change history to get back to his people and their never ending war with the Rutan. Sarah Jane Smith makes her first appearance and (after some initial misconceptions) ably aids the Doctor.

Lots of action and adventure make this a particularly entertaining story.

Great story

Will Thorp did a great job telling this story. He really brought the west alive. The different voices were amazing and he sounded so much like the tenth doctor, I forgot he wasn't him. A must to listen to.

The story is of typical Doctor Who quality - interesting plot with fairly well drawn characters. Nothing particularly spectacular - I'd be surprised if it ranked among anyone's list of favorites, but neither is it weak or bad. A good, solid, enjoyable story. Unfortunately, however, the narrator is particularly awful. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Will Thorp's Doctor Who narration in general - he speaks WAY too quickly and his characterization of the Doctor is just off. But I can usually tolerate it without too much grinding of the teeth. But his work here is almost intolerable - at least for an American audience. Perhaps a British listener wouldn't be quite as annoyed because they may not be as familiar with the sound of an Old West accent (like an American may not recognize a bad impersonation of a Welsh accent, for example, because they aren't as familiar with what a Welsh accent actually sounds like). But, honestly, Thorp's attempts at Old West and midwest are so totally ridiculous that I think any listener, regardless of their nationality or familiarity with the Old West would find it gratingly over-the-top. It sounds like something a comedian would do as a parody - like something you'd see on SNL or perhaps a Warner Brothers cartoon - like a really, really bad impression of Yosemite Sam - if you heard it out of context you'd probably assume it was a joke. It really bothers me that BBC would hire someone like Thorp when there are /so/ many great voice talents out there! Especially when, given Thorp's earlier performance in

Great Doctor and Martha Adventure!

This is an excellent adventure! The story is well written. I can picture it's world, characters, and creatures. Martha and the Doctor are in character. This could have very well been an episode. While I'm not fond of the 'romance' aspect of their early (Season 3) relationship, it refers to it an casual, tasteful way near the end.

There's a lot of running and action, with a few twists. It starts as creeping dread before becoming fast paced. There's a real tension and worry about the Doctor and Martha saving the day. Though I KNOW they will, I still feel my heart racing as the story barrels towards its climax.

The characters feel real and remind me of a show about people colonizing a planet. Fortunately, this group has the Doctor and Martha on their side. The villain is a dark, imagined malevolence that isn't really revealed until a little ways past the halfway mark.

It's a good plot and I didn't hear any plot holes when I listened. Everyone has an equal part in the plot. There aren't throwaways here. It's a short story and the author makes every detail and character count.

I LOVE Freema's reading. The actress always gets it right! I really wish her and David had read most of their adventures featuring their characters together. Not that there are really 'bad' narrators for the DW books, but Freema and David are top-notch!

A Darker Who Adventure

This stood out from a lot of the Who stories I've read and I loved it. It has a darker tone, with a mad building and an equally mad man. And not the one you think!

The characters are handled well and I'm glad it avoided the Mad Scientist cheesiness of similar stories. I love the two bots, the villain, and the ominous presence of the Craw. The family are more background stock characters than real people. The father irritated me, but it was probably because that kind of personality always does. So in a way that is a good thing.

I love that you really can sense the danger of time passing as the story goes on. It has some grisly, violent bits and though it's more machines than people. The plot is straight forward and the resolution is unexpected, but will make you grin.

My only issue with this is that the Doctor and Martha, especially her, feel like sidekicks in their own story. It seems as if they are supporting the others characters in every way.

Will Thorp, as usual, does an excellent job reading the story. The villain's evil, glee is brilliant and his performance adds life to the story.

Solid and enjoyable

The story was a bit weak in places but overall a good Dr Who.
