The Daleks have a long and terrible history of aggression, and are among the most feared of all science-fiction baddies. Ruthless, cunning, and utterly evil, they have no pity, no fear, and will stop at nothing to destroy all other forms of life. Now Nicholas Briggs, the voice of the Daleks in the new BBC One Doctor Who TV series, goes deep underground to a deserted base in the Utah Desert to unearth the truth about the most nightmarish creatures in the universe. Packed with extracts from the Daleks' many TV appearances, The Dalek Conquests finds out where they come from, why they are bent on universal domination, and what part they played in the Time Wars. Above all, it explores their epic struggles with their nemesis, the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Featuring clips from such classic stories as "The Dalek Invasion of Earth", "Day of the Daleks", "The Planet of the Daleks", "Genesis of the Daleks", and the 2005 episodes, "Dalek" and "The Parting of the Ways", this is essential listening for Dalek fans, and foes, new and old.

So that's where they came from....
If you are not a long-time fan of the Doctor Who series and are curious about where these DALEKs came from; this audiowork is for you. On the other hand, if you've been watching the series faithfully, this documentary is more a trip down memory lane (it fills in some of the gaps if you've been following the Doctor on PBS).
All-in-all, this is just plain fun although it begs the question "When will someone bundle these episodes as a collection?"

    Publisher's Summary:
The Doctor, Polly, and Ben visit a human colony that appears to be one big holiday camp. They soon discover, though, that its inhabitants have been brainwashed by the Macra, giant crab-like creatures who have taken over the colony. The humans are being forced to mine a gas that is essential for the Macra to survive, but fatal to them.
It's a scary race to rescue them, with Ben getting taken in by the Macra for a time, but eventually the time travellers manage to restore the colony's freedom.

Heh, maybe I just like stories with giant crabs
I enjoyed this one quite a bit. The Doctor (along with Jamie, Ben, and Polly) come to a colony on an unnamed planet. It seems Utopian, with Refreshers and machines to tone your body and repair your clothes, until they get the gist that something is up. Not only do the guards seem particularly interested in the ramblings of a crazed prisoner, but certain strict rules are in place. And there is mention of pits and labor sites. The Doctor is quite active in this one (some of the earlier stories would have him as an almost passive observer, in my experience) and works harder than any of his companions to solve the issues. One does have to get used to the "linking narration" (at first, every little thing is described and by the end, several minutes will go by without a lot of clues) but once you do, it's not too hard to imagine the scenes and to enjoy the adventure. My favorite Second Doctor story to date (though, due to the BBC archive wipe, only about the third one I've seen).
Classic lost adventure preserved in audio
A holiday camp of the future controlled by evil crab people. What more can you ask for? Patrick Troughton is at his lovable best and this is the only way to enjoy the Macra who would not return to the TV show again until 2007 - 30 years after their debut.

    Publisher's Summary:
Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in the series) traces the development of this incredibly successful series, which first hit our TV screens in 1963. As well as a galaxy of classic moments from the series, he introduces some of the great and good who helped make the series a national institution, including many of the actors who've played the Doctors and his companions, and some of the series' most prolific writers and producers.
Meanwhile Elisabeth Sladen, the Doctor's trusty assistant Sarah-Jane, travels back in time to discover some little-heard radio gems. There's a 1974 location report from Dartmoor, The Ed Stewart Show broadcast live from Longleat in 1983, Radio 1's Newsbeat on the recovery of a missing episode, and rare archive interviews with Terry Nation, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Mary Tamm, Douglas Adams, and even the mutt-shaped K9. A wealth of comedy is also represented with clips from Hello Cheeky, Week Ending, The Skivers, and Dead Ringers.

Length: 1 hr and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-19-05
    Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 22 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Doctor Who
    Publisher's Summary:
Following a spot of uncharacteristic intoxication, the Doctor wakes to discover that the TARDIS has materialised in the service ducting of the Vipod Mor, a huge craft which is itself floating in deep space. Furthermore, the console has detected Time spillage: someone or something is tampering with Time! Such experimentation could not only damage the Space/Time continuum but destroy the past and future history of the Universe. The Doctor and Peri board the craft to investigate.
Time experimentation isn't the only illegal operation being conducted on board. A number of valuable works of art have been stolen from those planets which the craft has visited, and two rather suspect policemen are patrolling the ducting in search of the intergalactic art thief. Soon Peri has been detained by the police, the Doctor is interrogated about the secrets of Time travel, and everyone has to suffer the on-board computer's split personality.
So is there anyone left to stop the spiteful captain cultivating and unleashing a killer disease?

60 minutes of my life I'm not getting back.
It was 1985, and Doctor Who had been placed on an 18 month hiatus by the BBC due, in part, to failing ratings and persistent criticism of the increasing levels of violence that were on display as Colin Baker had taken the reigns of the lead character (while season 22 was uneven, there was a lot of promise in the notion of a darker character in The Doctor; I will leave the debate of the merits of Colin Baker's tenure to others, as I rather enjoyed some aspects of his era). It was during this hiatus that the BBC produced a one-off radio drama written by then script editor Eric Saward (who's work I almost universally loathed in the program). Slipback is thus the only "new" Doctor Who that aired between Season 22 and 23, and unfortunately these 6 10-minute episodes weren't encouraging for the future.
Saward attempts to marry almost Douglas Adams-esque style comedy with what would otherwise be a somewhat brutal run-around featuring a fairly large cast of uninteresting characters doing uninteresting or questionable things until the majority of them are dead. The Doctor himself is side-lined for much of the story and the ever-present banter between him and his companion Peri (voiced as always by the lovely Nicola Bryant) is, ironically, the only high point. Most of the wit on display in the story is found in the sometimes wonderful dialogue delivered by Baker and Bryant.
Otherwise, the story stretches the listener's tolerance with a questionably voiced computer, which doubtlessly was intended to be funny but comes off as stilted and annoying, and a convoluted cast of characters with sometimes unbelievable motives, few of whom the listener ever cares about making the outcome somewhat irrelevant (and its the worst kind of deus ex machina outcome after backing the plot into a corner anyway, which I find annoying).
Aside from some minor wittiness in the dialogue, Slipback ably illustrates the problems the show was facing at this point in its history.

    Good Who
I read another review saying how horrible this audiobook is. I completely disagree. This isn't an audiobook in that somebody is reading a book. It is an actual sound recording of THREE lost Dr. Who episodes with linking narration on each to help to explain what is happening and for a Dr. Who fan this is a must. The telesnap reconstructions give me headache, this I can listen to my car or any place and get a feel for what the episode was like without the headache. On the plus side I'm saved the poor quality sets and am able to create my own. Until the video/film records of the lost episodes are found (if they ever are) this is so far the best way to enjoy them.
    good classic who
What made the experience of listening to Doctor Who the most enjoyable?
revisiting some of the early Dr. Who stories
Who was your favorite character and why?
Steven -- as one of the Dr.'s early companions, he is quite different from Rose and others, yet one sees similarities too.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The dr complaining about the horse was pretty funny
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Two -- both times leaving while chaos took over
    Any additional comments?
worthwhile for anyone who is interested in early Dr. Who.
    Classic Who Stories
A number of the older Doctor Who stories have been more-or-less lost to time, with there being no known complete copy of the video available (having been aired before either VCRs or re-runs were yet invented). Thankfully, those stories do at least have the audio recordings still remaining. This collection covers three such stories.
The Myth Makers is a First Doctor (Hartnell) story taking place in ancient Greece
The Massacre [of St. Bartholomew's Eve] is a First Doctor (Hartnell) story taking place in 16th-century France
The Highlanders is a Second Doctor (Troughton) story taking place in the 18th-century Scottish highlands
These stories are important pieces of Doctor Who history, with companions joining or leaving the Doctor. It's too bad the video isn't completely available, but the linking narration does a great job of keeping the audience engaged in what's occurring onscreen.
    Dr Who / Dr Why?
I am giving Dr Who Adventures in History a one star rating because zero stars was not a choice. This is terrible. Not bad taste, violent, racy....just bad. Boring, nearly impossible to follow and then when you do follow it...you wish you hadn't. Don't waste your time or money. Use your free time more wisely. Learn a craft, read a chilhood favorite, but skip this book and I would assume the entire series.
    Bargain lost adventures
If you like Doctor Who, you need this bundle. Firstly, all 3 of these adventures are lost.

Story #40 - The weak story in season five
Another six part story in which only a single episode still exists in the BBC video vault (episode 3). This story is noteworthy for several reasons: 1. Patrick Troughton not only plays The Doctor but also the villian Salamander. 2. Barry Letts who directs this story would go on to produce most of the Third Doctor stories in the early '70's. 3. Patrick's son David makes his first appearence in Doctor Who.
As far as the story itself, it takes place in Earth's future in the 21st Century with the evil Salamander controling the United Zones Organisation who looks exactly like, yeah, you guessed it, The Doctor. While I like alot of the ideas in here like the whole One World Order concept, some of it is just too slow in the middle. Frazer Hines does a good job of narrating.

    Childs Play.
Children in sci-fi and horror and fantasy stories are alway causing trouble. The Doctor tries to save the day, when a child's fears and imagination ago muck, with the aid of a powerful egg. The story ends on a great cliffhanger. The storyline of the mini series is going well. Tom Baker is still the best Doctor I hope the rest of the series is just as good.

    Good story idea somewhat mishandled.
If you know nothing at all about the story when starting a listen, it's an OK episode. The first 15 minutes or so is actually great. However if you read the summary in advance, the "big reveal" comes as no surprise at all. Summary is not a total spoiler, but it still reveals a bit too much for the episode to become enjoyable.
Somewhat lackluster performance by Blair Underwood. Supporting cast is actually better.
Not bad, just a missed opportunity at making a really great episode.
