    On a dark, frozen planet where no planet should be, in a doomed city with a sky of stone, the last denizens of Earth's long-lost twin will pay any price to survive, even if the laser scalpels cost them their love and hate and humanity.
    And in the mat-infested streets, around teatime, the Doctor and Nyssa unearth a black market in secondhand body parts and run the gauntlet of augmented police and their augmented horses. And just between the tramstop and the picturehouse, their worst suspicions are confirmed: the Cybermen have only just begun, and the Doctor will be, just as he always has been, their saviour....

    Truly Classic Dr. Who!
    Felt like I could really travel in time, for it was the early 1980's and Peter was my doctor again. Such a joy, I highly recommend.
    Great Story
    Would you listen to Doctor Who - Spare Parts again? Why?
    YES. this is one frightening story and gives great background to the cybermen and their development. The older cyberman have always been a bit more frightening and this story shows just why.
    Worth a listen, but not at this price.
    Where does Doctor Who - Spare Parts rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    I would say it's one of my favourites. It was one of the first Big Finish audios I listened too, so I might be a little biased, but I loved it then, and I still love it now.
    What did you like best about this story?
    I like how it takes what we know about the Cybermen and adds a lot more to them in regards to where they came from. It's kind of like Genesis Of The Daleks, but with the Cybermen, and with more involvement with the people affected.
    Have you listened to any of Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton s other performances? How does this one compare?
    It's nice to go back to a lot of Big Finish's stuff because the Doctor/Companion dynamic gets expanded, even though it doesn't have all the elements as the on-screen stuff. I think that this audio was a big influence on my love of Big Finish, so I would say that this one is a must listen.
    Any additional comments?
    I would have to point out that you probably shouldn't get this here. It's marked at 19.24 or 1 credit, so the cheapest you could get it is about 7 (unless you got a credit deal). All of Big Finish's first 50 releases, including this, are marled as only 2.99 to download because they have been out of print for quite some time. I really think that every Doctor Who fan should listen to this, but get it from Big Finish. It is a lot cheaper, and it means that all the money will go to them to make more audios. You will also get to check out some of their other releases whilst there, most of which are amazing.
    Davison is EXCELLENT in gripping origin story.
    Never tried a Big Finish story before- I prefer books to radio- but this might be the best Cyber story ever.
    I'm surprised it wasn't adapted for TV as it could be done in a contained setting and only gain from the claustrophobia.
    Never my favourite Dr, Davison is frankly amazing here and sells his incarnation better than on most TV episodes. And the cast are all top notch.
    The 'Christmas Tree' scene is one of the most touching in all the WHOniverse; you'd have to be part cyber yourself not to be touched by it.
    Highly Recommended.
    This will disgust, chill and terrify.

    The Doctor has always admired the work of William Shakespeare. So he is a little surprised that Charley doesn't hold the galaxy's greatest playwright in the same esteem. In fact she's never heard of him. Which the Doctor thinks is quite improbable.
    General Mariah Learman, ruling Britain after the Eurowars, is one of Shakespeare's greatest admirers and is convinced her time machine will enable her to see the plays' original performances. Which the Doctor believes is extremely unlikely.
    The Daleks just want to help. They want Learman to get her time machine working. They want Charley to appreciate the first ever performance of Julius Caesar. They believe that Shakespeare is the greatest playwright ever to have existed and venerate his memory. Which the Doctor knows is utterly impossible.

    I thought it would be better.
    Daleks quoting Shakespeare sounds entertaining in theory, but in practice the story wasn't enjoyable at all. The full cast audio is what spared it a 1 star review.

    counter intuitive
    Great stories and characters, can't wait till the next one, but you get such a great picture of the sixties.
    Offshoot from BBCs Doctor Who series
    Just listened to all of the available series on Audible, 1-3, back-to-back.
    The story follows the Counter-Measures team solving mysterious events, similar to The X-Files. Based during the 1960s, it has a period The Avengers-esque soundscape to match.
    The first series is OK, but a bit of a mess in places; within the behind the scenes documentary it is acknowledged they learnt what worked and what needed changing. And am happy to say that series 2+3 are both much improved.
    The main issue with Counter-Measures, for me, is the delivery of one actors lines. So often theyre flat, lack emotion, or are poorly timed which results in them jarring with the flow of dialogue. It does improve in the latter half of series 3 so am hopefully once Audible gets Series 4 itll be a 5* all round review.
    * Series 1 - July 2012
    * Series 2 - June 2013
    * Series 3 - July 2014
    ----------------------------
    Not yet available on Audible:
    * Series 4 - July 2015
    Then it morphs into The New Counter-Measures:
    * Who Killed Toby Kinsella - July 2016 (duration 2 hours)
    * Series 1 - December 2016
    And one last thing to say is, Hugh Ross is fantastic as Sir Toby Kinsella. Hes got a great voice.

    The Doctor and Ace Return to Nazi Germany
    This story introduces Klein to the Doctor Who universe and also features David Tennant's first appearance in Doctor Who as the rather nasty Sergeant Kertz as the Doctor and Ace land in the toughest to escape prison camp in Nazi Germany at Colditz Castle.
    The plot is superb, and the interactions between the Doctor and Klein over the Doctor's hope to change history back to its original course, and you instanty see why there was a decision to bring her back. There are plenty of clever twists along the way including the reveal of what actually changed history and it's not what you'd expect.
    I also liked how well Ace actually fits in in a prison camp filled with POWs who've escaped from other camps, and the nobility of the English officers likable. At the same time, there's a bit nuance provided to the Germans in the form of Shafer. Overall, this is a very engrossing story

    Five Stars
    Fantastic work from the late great Nicholas Courtney. Wish he would have done more Big Finish before his passing.
    Lethbridge Stewart's Tour De Force
    Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart was very much the Man of Action on Doctor Who with little time for contemplation visibly. This story takes another look at the Doctor's iconic Brigadier as he goes to Germany in answer to a call for help from an old friend who has lost his mind as his German U.N.I.T. headquarters has been overrun by phantom soldiers. The Brigadier must turn to the Doctor, with whom he's had a bitter disagreement.
    James Swallow has written a powerful story that takes a fascinating look at the brigadier while the late Nicholas Courtney delivers an evocative performance. His imitation of the third doctor is only so so, but the psychological look at one of Doctor Who's most beloved characters certainly makes this worthwhile listening.
    Not my cup of tea maybe an extra half
    My second dip into the Companion chronicles features old favorite the Brigadier as he tells the story of an encounter at a Unit Base in Germany.
    The reports of Courtney having an excellent 3rd doctor voice are exaggerated to say the least. Personally the story would have been just as good and maybe better if it was just a question of the Brig saying the doctor said.
    The story itself is a pretty solid one of a military experiment gone bad. Toby Longworth plays off the Brig well. His ability to play two parts helps a bit here, but the very format is by its nature limiting.
    I can't help but think a 3rd actor on these things would work better but the budget apparently just won't allow it.
    This is the 2nd audio along with Minuet in Hell (Doctor Who) both of them turned out to be below what I expected. I hope this is not a trend.
    If you are a Doctor Who or Brigadier fanatic you will want this episode, if not then it is miss-able

    wosrt ever Dr who book
    Big fan of Tom Baker. This book never even gets started . God Knows who wrote this. I'm returning this book after fifteen minutes. Bloody rubbish, apart from Tom.. sorry I can't bear the rest of this.
    The Barbarian Queen.
    This was a great story. It was like Doctor Who meets Xena. Tom Baker and Louise Jamson were good as ever as the Fourth Doctor and Leela. Leela acting a lot like Xena is great fun. This was a great historical story, i don't know much about this history and I find the story of the Barbarian Queen very interesting. Leela learns the lesson every companion learns, you can't change history, not one dot. Great story.

    The Doctor and Charley decide to take a well-deserved break from the monotony of being chased, shot at and generally suffering antisocial behaviour at the hands of others. And so they end up in Venice, well into Charley's future, as the great city prepares to sink beneath the water for the last time...which would be a momentous, if rather dispiriting, event to witness in itself.
    However, the machinations of a lovesick aristocrat, a proud art historian and a rabid high priest of a really quite dodgy cult combine to make Venice's swansong a night to remember. And then there's the rebellion by the web-footed amphibious underclass, the mystery of a disappearing corpse and the truth behind a curse going back further than curses usually do.
    The Doctor and Charley are forced to wonder just what they have got themselves involved with this time....

    Anything But Your Traditional Story
    When I first listened to The Stones Of Venice I admit I wasn't hugely impressed with it. However as I've been going back and listening to the firsts season of audio stories for the eighth Doctor from Big Finish I was surprised to discover that it was a much better story this time round. Not only that but I came to really enjoy and appreciate this classically inspired tale of Venice's final hours, a cult worshiping a dead woman, amphibious gondoliers, an ageless duke and his lost love.
    Paul McGann and India Fisher given nice performances as the Doctor and Charley. This was the first story they recorded together (although it's the third in proper story order) and the chemistry between them is fantastic to listen to. McGann's performance is interesting as this was his first outing as the Doctor since the 1996 TV movie and there echoes of that performance to be heard in this story (such as this Doctor's ability to pick up on the pasts of other characters almost instantly). Yet McGann pushes towards being his own Doctor from the teaser sequence right to the finale itself. Fisher too gives a marvelous performance that, more then in either Storm Warning or Sword Of Orion, gives her a chance to really show off her skills as Charley ends up separated from the Doctor for a while. Fisher makes moments like Charley's being hypnotized and her reaction to it credible as well which I can imagine is nowhere near as easy as she makes it sound. All told, it is this story that really cements as a fine Doctor/companion combination.
    The story has a fine supporting cast as well. Michael Sheard is fine as Venice's ageless and cursed Duke Orsino who finds himself at the heart of the events in the story. Then there's Nick Scovell as the duke's art curator Churchwell who becomes something of a companion to the Doctor while Charley is away and a target of a cult. That cult is led by Vincenzo who is played by none other then Mark Gatiss and with considerable tongue and cheek at that. Then there's Big Finish regular Barnaby Edwards who plays the gondolier Pietro, one of the many amphibious gondoliers who plots to reclaim Venice after it sinks into the sea. Last but certainly not least is Elaine Ives Cameron as Ms. Lavish, an elderly lady who is amongst those to see Venice in its final hours yet is far more then she seems.

    Great narration
    Really enjoyed this one.
    Jon culshaw is a fantastic narrator. His Jon pertwee impersonation really is great. Also having Nick Briggs do the dalek voices adds an extra detail to the audiobook and makes it much more exciting. It's not too long too which I find also helps.
    I am already very familiar with the TV episodes it is based on so was fun spotting the various additions. lovely added sound effects and noises really keeps you entertained and interested.
    Magical Retelling!
    Loved this new retelling of a Terrance Dicks classic, John Culshaw's narration is great and he has Jon Pertwee down to a tee. Magical!h
    Cuishaw Is Jon Pertwee
    I highly anticipating this release and was awarded well, impressionist Jon Culshaw excelled in mimicry of the late Jon Pertwee who was The Doctor on screen, The story zipped along at a cracking pace, and Nick Briggs as usual brought the Daleks to nasty life. Great audio recommended.
    Classic Who brilliantly brought to life !!
    John Culshaw is just the best!! he really has a feel for these classic adventures. You can hear his love for the material in every sentence. Spot on narration with some nice audio effects and music, and with the ever brilliant Nick Briggs as the Daleks makes this just about perfect!
