    Down the Rabbit hole.
The Sixth Doctor and his shape changing private detective companion Frobisher enter a strange world that's gone insane. The story started off very funny, then it became dark and very bloody. Nice to see Frobisher who was never on the tv show, but in the Doctor Who comic strip. I thought he and the Doctor made an excellent team. Another great big finish story.

    Short Trips, they aren't kidding.
Got this free through a national library app. called "Hoopla Digital." It's best use is as a sleeping aide. There is a story for each of the first 8 Doctors. I felt the stories were pretty bland. I feel the writer could have spent some time describing the Doctors in each story (note: the final story did describe the 8 Doctor well enough) but considering how distinct each incarnation is . . . it just seems sloppy that no mention is given of the 4th Doctor's scarf or the fifth doctors cricket outfit (for example).
The stories themselves are pretty forgettable. A lot of them don't really focus on the Doctor himself (2nd's and 7th's stories barely even have him appear if at all).
The following is full of spoilers of each tale with an attempt to summarize each story.
    1) One of the first Doctor's companions is the focus. The first Doctor is there and talks a little, but I have a hard time figuring out what the point was. I'm guessing it was just that they saw some gas ceatures . . . I don't think there was even a threat.
    2) The second Doctor is there, but he is arguing with an alien in the far distance (to resolve tyranny I believe).

    The Red Planet.
The first humans land on Mars. Exploring the planet they are surprised to find other explorers. A man in a cricket outfit, who has a title instead of a name and an American biology student with a weird name. Together they find a tomb full of Ice Warriors. A great story with the 5 Doctor and Peri. Their partnership was cut to short on tv, so I hope they have more adventures in audio book form. This story was great. Combines plots from Apollo 13 and Mission to Mars. Also love the Ice Warriors. Thanks to audio.com for finely releasing these audios.

    Nothing to see here
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
An actual story suitably adapted for audio.
Although there are references in the commentary to an actual script, the play comes across as something in the ideas stage - "Let's have the Toy Maker from an old William Hartnell story return to confront Colin Baker's Doctor and Peri in Blackpool" - and that's it.
What will your next listen be?
I did buy the complete set of missing stories from a cancelled season of 1980s Doctor Who, of which this is the first. I'm kind of regretting it now...
I'll give them a chance, but it may be the end for my Big Finish buying. There's too much good stuff out there for Big Finish to be complacent any more.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
If I recall correctly, in the early days of Big Finish, they stubbornly declared their plays were not "talking books" and so refused to feature a narrator. (They have since featured narrators in their Companion Chronicle plays, to good effect.)
The alternative to having a narrator is to have the scene described in the dialogue. This can work when the play is conceived of as an audio play in the first place, though in science fiction this expository dialogue often comes across as contrived and intrusive, especially during the action scenes.
The climax of this play is a lot of noises and people shouting at each other. The Doctor wins the day somehow - I've no idea how. It's like watching TV with sound but no picture.
Afterwards I did a search for other people's reviews of this story because I was worried I was the only one who didn't have a clue what was going on. One reviewer had listened to it several times and still had no idea.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Doctor Who - The Lost Stories - The Nightmare Fair?
If anything, I'd be adding scenes.
As it stands, we've got people running around a fair, other people locked in a cell, the Doctor up to something (no idea what) and some guns going off.
    Any additional comments?
The only reason I am not asking for my credit back is because I like to keep my collections complete.
