A Great AU Doctor Novel and Look at What Might Have Been...

When people ask me who my favorite Doctor is or which Doctor was my first, I always answer the Shalka Doctor. More often than not I am greeted with a blank stare, followed by a 'Huh?'. At least it gives me the chance to explain the story around this novelization of a webseries that treated us briefly to Richard E. Grant as the (at the time canonical) Ninth Doctor. Before the series even premiered on the BBC website the TV series was returning with a different Ninth Doctor, rendering the Shalka Doctor an AU (Alternate Universe) Doctor. Nothing against Christopher Eccleston (he's my second favorite Doctor) but this story was my introduction to the world of Doctor Who and as such will always have a special place in my heart. This novelization (by the great Paul Cornell) is great. It adds some depth to the story of the webseries by getting inside the head of the Doctor and co. and providing additional details to the story. It provides some classic Who moments with monsters that wouldn't have been out of place in the classic era of the show. Highly recommended!

Paul Cornell's novelization of the one adventure of the only briefly canonical Ninth Doctor shines with all of his usual wit, and his skill at character drawing. He takes the opportunity to smooth away a few rough edges from the Web Cast script he wrote, and opens the curtain a little on the states of mind and heart of this strangely bitter and flippant Doctor, and his old enemy, the Master, now relegated to companion status, and with his fangs partially drawn.

Interestingly,though, much of the novel's new material puts more flesh on the bones of the people with whom the Doctor interacts--especially Alison and Joe, and Major Kennet, each of whom becomes the viewpoint character at key moments. In all, a fine enhancement to a worthy script, and a fascinating loo at the road not taken.

Hit and Miss Sci-Fi Mystery Comedy

This story is a bit of a Star Trek parody that has the Seventh Doctor mistaken for the murdered new Commander of Dark Space Eight. The story off almost intolerably with a music announcer giving tedious descriptions of the characters and the two lead Dark Space Eight characters being over the top in matching stereotypes. Things improve considerably when the Seventh Doctor shows up as most of the truly funny moments in this story belong to him.

The story hits it stride when it becomes a murder mystery and there are some very nice plots and even some funny moments in the last part.

The story has some fun moments but you really do have to wait for them and wade through a lot of unentertaining material to get to them.

Interesting Tale, Intriguingly Told, Excellent End

The choppy narrative not only disguises a straightforward story but adds to the sense of disconnect from events the Dr and Nysa feel as the tale unfolds.

Nowhere near as complex as some reviewers make out - in simple terms the end of Chapter 3 is the finale and the start of chapter four the introduction.

And although the Dr for once seems utterly incidental to events, the last few minutes give a twist that completely changes your entire perception of what just happened.

Utterly Excellent with Davison and cast on top form.

Highly Recommended.

An Ugly Miss

Nekromanteia is a story that doesn't entirely fail but does fail in some big ways. There's over the top corporate villainy combined with cackling witches. There's an attempted rape and then an attempt to make the would be rapist a sympathetic character, although there were few of those in the story.

The story isn't all bad. The leads perform very well, and the truth about Nekromanteia is actually truly engaging. The story moves along at a solid pace and it never feels like it drags or becomes dull. However, it tries too hard to be adult and mostly succeeds at feeling unpleasant.

Terrible narrator

I didn't get very far in the book. Not sure what's going on with the narrator. Sometimes he would talk twice the original speed for no reason!

Grim, but good!

I had to take away a star on story for this due to being so bleak. Mostly, it was a great tale, but every now and then the author seemed to feel the need to kill a character (usually horribly) and dwell on the nastiness. But leaving that behind, there's a lot to like here. We've got the Great Fog of 1952, East End gangsters (Doctor Who does the Kray brothers! Sort of), and evil, shape shifting aliens. The aliens in their natural form are hard to picture, as they are so vaguely described--creatures of light and dark with no mouths and a hundred eyes are really all we get. An excellent job of narration from Dan Starkey, who does an amazing 3rd Doctor--not an easy feat!

Graphic, But Very Engrossing

Definitely a Doctor Who book for grown-ups. Well defined characters and a great sense of place make the story extremely gripping. Gruesome in parts certainly. Once again brilliant narration by Dan Starkey.

Good story but a little bit too gory for me

Some quite gruesome descriptions of zombies and violent deaths. Other than that I enjoyed the story and could not fault the reader. His different voices for the characters really made it clear who was talking.

Amorality Tale

I found this book really engrossing. The story line is able to keep you interest from start to finish
