An unabridged reading of this classic TV novelisation featuring the First Doctor, as played on TV by William Hartnell.
The Doctor is feeling confident: this time the TARDIS has landed on Earth, in England, in 1963. But when he and his companions Susan, Ian and Barbara venture outside, they are soon lost in a maze of ravines and menaced by gigantic insects. However, the insects are dying - every living thing is dying....
Meanwhile, in a cottage garden on a perfect summer's day, the man from the Ministry arrives to put a stop to the production of DN6, a pesticide with the power to destroy all life-forms. But the men who invented DN6 will stop at nothing - not even murder - in their desire to see DN6 succeed. Can the one-inch-tall Doctor foil their plans?
Members Reviews:
Slightly Above Average for Terrance Dicks.
If you've watched the First Doctor episodes then you know what you are getting. I don't think Terrance liked being stuck with having to write the books based on the TV episodes and it often shows. He rarely gives insight into what the characters are thinking and he adds nothing beyond what the TV script offered, which is truly a shame. I'd love to see what these books would be like if they were written by someone who realized they didn't have a "BBC budget" they had to stick to. Some other authors develop the characters more and provide new insights even if you've seen the TV episodes. This generally doesn't happen with Dicks. This is one of his earlier books so I found it more bearable - plus I love the first set of companions (Ian, Barbara and Susan) so that helped pull me through. It's a very easy and short read regardless. For those who haven't experienced the First Doctor or his companions. These two (Ian and Barbara) are often overlooked but I find them as some of the greats. They are some of the strongest characters written (both in the show and in the novels and audio CDs) and often do most of the work at getting themselves out of danger while also contending with an often scheming, arrogant and contentious Doctor. These are the companions who likely shape the Doctor he becomes in the future - not that you can see that in this book but it's worth giving them a look. Barbara is surprisingly overlooked at the first really strong female character prior to Sarah Jane Smith. She was extremely strong willed and capable and she stood up to the Doctor on many occasions - something that went away with later female companions.
Early environmental story for Doctor Who
As a general rule, people associate the era of the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) with stories that make political comments about the real world. This book is based on a serial that was first broadcast in 1964 and looks at the possible dangers of insecticides.
The TARDIS arrives in 1964 and, due to an accident on landing, the ship and its crew are miniaturised. Much like the later "Land of the Giants" TV series, their adventures tend to centre on the threat of full-sized items to miniaturised people. As you can imagine, the insecticide DN6 becomes a major peril.
Running parallel with this story is one for the full-sized people. DN6 is under investigation, and its inventor will stop at nothing to prevent his own financial ruin if it is banned.
