    Series backstory explains poor quality
This volume of the Dalek Empire contains a little "making of" bit at the end, from the writer, and a lot of the issues with this third part of the DE series finally makes sense. There was never any intention of having a third part of the series, as regards a large overarching plot, so nothing was done in the previous episodes to set this section up. This is why a minor character is the one used to make a connection through the timelines. While the rest of the details about the writing process are fairly typical of writing inspiration--small errors turning into major plots, offhand comments becoming major inspiration--the basic fact that this third part was never planned is what's led to the mediocre quality.
As for this particular episode...not much of note happens. Daleks still evil, just more overtly so. A small revelation about a minor character is made. It feels like this episode could just be skipped entirely.
    Loses Momentum
The series loses some momentum. It illustrates the pitfalls of a six-part Dalek Empire series as the story becomes padded and seems to paddle in place for two third of the release and retread old ground. For example, the same pesky bureaucrat appears from the previous chapter in Part 3 to illustrate his reservation about the Daleks and provide a token obstacle for the Wardens. The story does add a new mystery and a pretty shocking revelation at the end but thereâs a lot of padding to get through to get to that.

    Great Vintage Lost Story
Interesting lost story for fans of the early days of Dr. Who. Feel is reminiscent of "Marco Polo" -- our heroes are carried along by events rather than shaping them.
Brilliant Historical and A Concept Piece
This set collects two lost stories from the First Doctor (William Hartnell's) era and reunites original series' co-stars Carole Ann Ford and William Russell to lend their voices to the efforts. Both were written by Turkish Actor Morris Farhi and adapted by Nigel Robinson.
The vast majority of the set is taken up by Farewell Great Macedon, where the TARDIS crew landed in Babylon and are stranded during the last days of Alexander the Great as conspirators plot against the great man. The stories are powerfully written and with superb historical accuracy. John Dorney turns in a fantastic and charismatic performance as Alexander. The TARDIS crew has a great moment in Episode 5 that reveals the type of people they are. The Doctor is far more likable than some other early serials. For the most part, it feels like a very good Season 1 story.
There are some interesting quirks in this one including the Doctor saying he spent two years in medical school and took the Hippocratic Oath and the Doctor goes searching to find oil to refine as part of fixing the TARDIS.
The only downside about this story is that there was a little bit of a repetition and the speech by Barbara at the end seemed far less like Barbara and more like the author to make sure we got his point.
Still, this was a brilliant story.
The second story pales in comparison with the Fragile Yellow Arc of Fragrance. In it, the TARDIS crew have landed on the world and a young man named Rythym has fallen for Barbara and perhaps she's fallen for him too. The story hints at it but isn't really clear. It's a one off story that Farhi wrote as a sample of his work rather than a fully developed script and it shows. The Doctor makes the key decision that resolves the story but we never actually know why he did what he did. It feels like a science fiction story that could be in any franchise and just doesn't feel like a Doctor Who story at all.
Overall, Farewell Great Macedon carries this set and is worth noting for being the first time Russell and Ford performed together in more than 40 years. Well worth listening.

    No doctor in third story.
For those of us who did not live through the original Doctor who series and have only seen the surviving episodes, Sara Kingdom is not very well known. Thus, the third story in this set that only had her character and no doctor is a let down. Plus, the third story has a cliff hanger ending. Maybe those who saw the original series know what happened next, but for the rest of us...
A Great Look At What Could Have Been
Although neither story is exactly 5 star material, they both are great for what they are. The first was definitely the better of the 2. I understand the criticism for the sexism in the story, but I can ignore it since no one with the tiniest shred of common sense can not know to expect extreme sexism from a story written in the 60s about women taking over and being as chauvinistic as men were in the 50s.
The second story sounded like it had potential, but I just couldn't get into it beyond the curiosity of a Dalek episode that never got filmed. I wish I had known before listening that it was the pilot for a spin off type show that was intended for American audiences. I would have listened eventually, but I would have been in no rush if I had known.
Frazer Hines performance as the Doctor is so perfect it makes the first story much more enjoyable than it otherwise might have been. I had to laugh, because in the extras when he talked about how he was trying to do the scene where the Doctor escapes, I had actually pictured the same scene in my head that he said he was trying to emulate.

Domain of the Voord Is Dead On
Andrew Smith does an excellent job of resurrecting the whole mythos that was the William Hartnell era of Doctor Who. I enjoyed the fact that he took the time to recall and research the classic episodes as well as the original comics. William Russell's portrayal of William Hartnell was very believable - he had it down to the hems and haws. Carole Ann Ford's also was excellent in her version of Jacqueline Hill's Barbara.
I like how the stories that have been recently coming out for the earlier doctors are fully equipped with all of the sounds and nuances of the fully casted soundtracks of the early lost episodes that were released a couple decades back. They somehow have a little better feel than Big Finish's usual fully performed stories - where they use narration instead of dialogue overkill to give the audience a visual of everything that is happening. I give this story a Mary Poppins rating: "Practically perfect in every way". Keep up the good work guys. :-)
Perfect recreation of the Hartnell era
The story, the atmospheric music and sfx along with brilliant performances from all involved make this a must have for all fans of the first Doctor and his team.

    Battle of the Bureaucrats
The story focuses more on the Wardens and gives us a look into how the Border Worlds have come to turn to the Daleks for help and the difficulties in their relationship with the Galactic government. In many ways, the problems mirror those that existed between Great Britain and her colonies and it's well-stated without becoming overdone. What is overdone are the arguments between the Daleks and the Border Worlds counsel which consist of the counselor objecting to the Daleks' action and the Daleks pointing out they have "executive authority" repeatedly. The series does continue to do a good job of establishing its characters and mysteries.
Less and less to draw you in
When the Daleks say they are curing a plague...it's best to get details. Nothing is explicitly stated in this episode, but the Dalek's involvement in the anti-plague efforts are alarming enough, and their insistance on geo-forming planets as part of the deal sets the humans up for disaster.
I'm still having trouble getting into this third section of the Dalek Empire series. We have a few more connections to the past--the daughter of a character appears--but nothing that would drive me to purchase the next volume. Luckily, as I got these through the Humble Bundle, not much effort is required.

Tries to be too clever (but isn't)
Initially this seemed like a good story. It has a great premise. However I gave up on it about halfway through as it became quite irritating. It's more about "look at how much I know about Dr Who" as they try to cram as many canon facts as possible.
It's a pity the author didn't do some research on the military as his assertion that Lethbridge-Stewart was a Sapper and then a Lance Corporal along with Mike Yates being promoted from Sergeant to Captain is quite ridiculous!
Narration by Dan Starky is excellent as per his other reads such as 'Amorality Tale'.
    Read well
Great performance. Really captured Doctor #3.
Not my favourite story... should've ended with "To Be Continued..."

An unabridged reading of this classic novelisation featuring the First Doctor and the Meddling Monk.
When the TARDIS materialises on an apparently deserted Northumbrian beach, Steven disputes the Doctor's claim that they have travelled back to the 11th century. The discovery of a modern wristwatch in a nearby forest merely reinforces his opinion.
But it is 1066, the most important date in English history, and the Doctor's arrival has not gone unnoticed. Observing the appearance of the TARDIS is a mysterious monk, who recognises the time machine for what it is. He also knows that the Doctor poses a serious threat to his master plan - a plan which, if successful, could alter the future of the entire world....

Classic Who With A Fantastic Narrator
What made the experience of listening to Doctor Who: The Time Meddler the most enjoyable?
A combination of the audacity and comedy in the writing (translated faithfully from the screen by Nigel Robinson), and the ridiculously good narration and characterisation by Peter Purves.
What did you like best about this story?
Purves is the undoubted stand-out of this release. Not only does he give faithful voice to his own companion-character, Steven Taylor, he has a more than decent stab at everyone else, including Vikings, Northumbrians, and Maureen O'Brien's Vicki. But the great revelation (at least if you haven't already heard his work in the Big Finish audio stories), is Purves' rendition of William Hartnell's First Doctor. While Hartnell was a powerful presence on screen, Purves delivers a version of him that does far more than taking you into the story - he makes you quickly believe that he IS the First Doctor, which anchors you in the world of the story very firmly.
What about Peter Purvess performance did you like?
Everything about Purves' performance enhances this audiobook - his First Doctor and his faithful replaying of Steven Taylor particularly, but (as Purves himself has said before now), much of his career over the last few decades has been filled with audio work of one kind or another, and that expertise comes shining through every second of this telling. In retrospect, it's rather a shame that other Target novelisations of his period, including The Myth Makers and The Gunfighters (both of which worked very well in print), were delivered by other narrators, as Purves would be a solid go-to narrator for all First Doctor stories of his period, because you get more than your money's worth from his performance across the board.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely - The Time Meddler is a story that encourages single-sitting consumption in any case: someone beggaring about with history, with added Vikings. But Purves' performance (it's diminishing to call it a reading) makes it a story you can certainly listen to at a single gulp, given the free time.
    Any additional comments?
The Massacre was pretty hard going on screen, but on the strength of The Time Meddler, and of Purves' delivery in particular, that's one I'll be investing in shortly, so this audiobook resulted in two sales.
    A good doctor who book
A good book for any doctor who fan (like I am)!!!! A bit confusing at times but a still a great story line. Also a bit repetitive at times and slightly gory at one point.
