Great Supernatural Fantasy

This is the third book in The Dead Among Us series, I really enjoyed the first two and they're great reads for paranormal fantasy fans. The third book begins with a demon possessed serial killer headed to San Francisco to hunt down Paul and Katherine. Before it can take on two powerful practitioners, it needs to regain its strength by hunting down its favorite prey, young women.

The two Faerie courts are more threatened by Paul than ever, and they each form their own plan to weaken him. Their attempts to separate Paul from Katherine seem to be working, and she's more distrustful of him than ever. Without Katherine by his side, Paul may not be able to fight all the forces arrayed against him.

I've really enjoyed this series so far. This type of paranormal fantasy, with a magic user that resides in our otherwise normal world, is not my usual read but I liked this author's version of it. He's sold me on his concept of faeries and other fantasy creatures walking unseen on the mortal plane. The writing is descriptive but straightforward, and has plenty of amusing moments to lighten up poor Paul's situation. I always prefer books with multiple points of view, it really keeps things moving, and I genuinely enjoy being in the heads of these characters.

J.L. Doty is both author and narrator for this book, and did a great job with the separate voices for the characters. I thought it was a good performance. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Yes. Loved these 3 books. Started a little apprehensively, but now Im hooked!

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Sometimes the narrator felt a little stilted in comparison to some more experienced narrators Ive come across and some of his accents maybe a little cheesy, but all his characters are clearly defined and easily distinguished from each other.

A nice easy listen with enough intrigue and mystery to keep everyone happy.

I enjoy the relationship between Jack and Marin

Jack's latest client is looking for them to check out this house that his family have watched over for years to see if the magic would prevent the house from being moved. But when Jack and Marin go to check it out, the magic contained in the house is beyond anything they expected. Using the help of Bob and Ewan, Marin's father, can they complete the assignment or will disaster strike. This is the 6th story in this series. I enjoy the relationship between Jack and Marin. I also liked that Bob played more of a role in this story. I wish the story itself had more depth to it but overall, it was an enjoyable read.

Spirelli Paranormal Investigations

I just adorned this series of books and really hope there are more to come. I want to learn more about Bob!! One of my favorite parts was the description of Marin in her dragon form flying. I could just see the colors!

Great Addition To The Series

Another great addition to the serial framework. Characters are getting more deep and developed and it is missing the sometimes heavy handed romance that is present in some of Baray's other stories. Just focusing on story is working, keep it up!

Spirelli 6

With all six of Spirelli investigation series under my belt. I can say they were an easy read. Each novella held its own storyline and went into the other with ease. Remarking with slight hints of the previous storylines. Yet, Jack continue to have mine lives getting hurt in each novella. The storytelling at times had attempted a dry humor one you would grimace not laugh out loud. I fine Jack character could possess a laugh out loud type of humor and Marin could help with the bantering.

Agood read

I found this book to have a bit more meat on it's bones that the previous books. A refuge house that is alive, that no one understands needs to torn down or moved. Jack and Marin take on the case and slowly work their wway through to the end. I enjoyed this book and look forward to readingmore of this series

Rocky Horror!

I quite liked this one, even if it's different than the author's Flask of Eyes or The Persona, though it did remind me a little of his Bog Demon story in Devolution Z #1. Hyde Seed is essentially the story of a man battling his personal demons. I guess one could say it's symbolic of the hard times people sometimes face. Anyway, the story is short, bittersweet and kind of neat. It has beautiful illustrations that give the layout a nostalgic look and what a grabber of a cover! The story is definitely worth reading for those who might like a Rocky Balboa and Jekyll-and-Hyde kind of thing.

Scott Glennon does a terrific job bringing the story to life. The ending, per the pacing of his vocalization, gives the text a real "Rocky" climax feel.

A mystery among the fairies

A Twist of Fae: Surfaeillance by Rebekah Shafer follows the adventures of Burgundy Graves, a detective among the faeries in the World. Assigned to protect a millionaire, but abandoned by her partners, Burgundy is disturbed to see shape-shifting ogres appear and kill him. Finally locating her two partners, Burgundy takes off after the shape-shifters to track down the monsters.

This novella is full of delight and creativity. It is fun, combining mystery with the world of Faery, with a monitored portal between Earth and Faery, but potential for illegal portals to be created. With shape-shifting ogres out to destroy her, Burgundy has a big job to do, but this is one bold, capable woman, a detail I really enjoy.

The audio edition is narrated by Anna Castiglioni, who helps to bring this book to life. She makes Burgundy seem even more real than she might seem on paper.

In spite of my general disinterest in things fantasy, I enjoyed this novella. I picked it up because I was asked if I would review it, but now I'm ready to listen to the next in the series when it comes out. I give this book four stars.

You owe it to yourself to read this book.

The first novel in this series created a rich world where history, myth and fairy tale blend together and offered us a protagonist driven by duty more than heroism as it built towards a climax. This second volume picks up with the fallout of the previous years events, dropping the reader straight into the action as we discover that far from being allowed to fade back into the background, Red Ben is going to be fighting for his life.

The focus in the second novel is on the eastern and western guardians of the remnants and the lore and the machinations of the Envoy, leading us through Xanadu in the past, Paris in the present and of course, a little bit of London among others. The threads of loss, betrayal, longing and survival weave throughout the fantastic story telling and compelling characters. It's faster paced than the first, full of visceral battle scenes, with the occasional potent moment of sorrow or despair, rooting it deeply in the readers heart.

James Bennett is a superb storyteller and this series is a must read for fans of knightly adventures, dragons or fantasy, or pretty much anyone who reads fiction really.

I would recommend reading the first, but technically I think you could dip straight in at book 2, Bennett drops just enough breadcrumbs to follow the plot without the full background, although I think it is a shame to miss out on book 1 personally.

A great follow up to Chasing Embers

Dropped into the middle of...?

The first book was good, but this 2nd book felt like I was dropped into the middle of a book, fed a couple of chapters, and then kicked back out. Everything in this very short book happened in one room, with no lead up to what was going on or what had happened since we left the story in the first book; you kinda got an idea by the end of the book, but I would have preferred to know how this book hooked up to the first book - and what was happening at the end - cliffhanger...ish. Good writing in both books; I'd recommend the first one, but this one - not so much.

Novellas are enjoyable

Enjoyed the story within a story. Author uses confession device to tell the tale and has made her supernatural characters very human and approachable. Best to read in sequence but can stand alone.

Nicely Done!

A unique tale of magic and fantasy, Druyor does a beautiful job of creating distinctive and appealing characters and a plot that will keep you reading to the end. A charming read!

An intriguing puzzle .. !

Laylea has to solve a mystery and gets thrown into a murder plot. Plus there's this ancient cursed box and a vampire running around. Luckily Laylea has friends with superpowers.

My daughter said I would like this book:

I must say I was skeptical, but after 25 pages I was hooked. It was a fun read.

Vivid Imagery, Outstanding Reading

Where does The Lover of Lord Eithras rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Excellent short-fiction structure, good scene structure, pacing right on the button, and the point comes across bright and clear.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eithras, the main character is very real - feeling mis-cast in his social role and so vulnerable to seduction. But he learns from his mistake, and matures into a person we can trust. The main subject is "Possession" -- the characters get "taken over" and must fight free.

What does Colin Hussey bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Because Colin Hussey was the reader on one of my anthologies, Through The Moon Gate, I really shouldn't try to give an impartial evaluation of his skills -- but the thing is, he has my personal combination down pat. I just love his interpretations of Characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This one is very short so it was easy to fit into an evening. But Colin Hussey gives you that "can't put it down" feeling.

Any additional comments?

If you like this short, you will probably love this series -- this piece introduces a whole world, with its rules of magic and practicality as well as social structures constraining Characters' actions. It gives you the problems the Hero has to confront and a hint of what he must become to emerge a winner. In other words, this piece is a nice springboard, or what they call in TV, a "Pilot Episode." I think it ought to be picked up for Web Radio, podcast, or something, with lots of actors and background music, full production. Could make a Netflix Original Series -- it is that vividly visual.
