Fun, lightning-fast read for all ages.
First, let me say, I love the name, Juniper Lynch, and I'm intrigued by the fact that Juniper inherited certain psychic powers from her dearly-departed grandmother. Unfortunately, Granny's abilities didn't translate to her own health.
One of Juniper's "besties", Beth, has misplaced her retainer, and might have to spend the summer at a computer camp for nerds, if her dad gets wind of it. She begs Juniper to help her find it.
Juniper's visions, like her grandmother's before her, come from versions of crystals and reflections. Unable to find Granny's "crystal ball substitute, a black-framed mirror, Juniper resorts to a filled water glass, but instead of Beth's retainer, she sees visions of a young girl, badly injured. A Google search find that Laurie Simmons, age 13, has been missing for three days. Juniper, along with Beth and other bestie, Anne, sets out to find her.
I sped through Lost Girl, and was sorry to see it end. This novelette, filled with smart dialogue and snappy humor, is a very entertaining read for tweens, young adults, and adults. I look forward to additional stories in the Oracles Series by Dax Varley.

Charming
What a lovely little book! Author Dax Varley, in Lost Girl, has created characters with a wealth of charm set in a story that moves quickly and even has a twist or two. The "hook" is that the main character Juniper is clairvoyant, and that is a compelling reason for me to read, for adding a little supernatural is always fun. Varley's voice is wonderful. She comes up with phrases that are cute and funny and original. When characters talk like this, it is a fun ride for all. The book is short--billed as a novelette--and I finished it in just over an hour. A teenage girl who has an extra hour or so in her busy summer could pick this up and be enthralled for an afternoon; a mother who is tired of hearing her child cry out "I'm bored" could toss this little book at her and find the whining stops for a blissful few hours. (Wait a minute? Teenage girls don't whine, do they?) I'm a very mature man, and I loved this book, so I suppose it's not just for adolescent girls. But I think they are definitely a target audience.
She see people who aren't dead - yet.
A look into a glass of water and she sees a missing girl. Well this teenager does have the sight.
This book doesn't go much into the downside of the 'gift' and some true believers might get upset with her using a crystal ball, or glass of water, to find a retainer in the first place. But the characters are good hearted and grow throughout the story.
