Wolfgang Hohlbein. Der Name für das Unbegreifliche.

-- FAZ

A Swampy Louisiana Tale on Black Bayou

This novel is fast-paced and an easy read. I devoured it. Gabe, the hero, has felt unloved and unwanted all his life since he had to grow up in a boys' home when his mom and dad were sent to prison. It seems evil has followed him all the days of his life, and he's spent his life fighting it. When he meets Frannie, he's determined not to let the evil conquer her as well. Black Water Bayou holds secrets of its own. Frannie's father drowned there. Her sister was possessed there. Yet, she's determined to visit the bayou to save her sister. Will it claim her as well? She meets a guy named Spider who fries fish for her and Gabe. Is he more than a simple fisherman, or is he a fisherman of men in his own way? I was attracted to this novel because it's set in Louisiana, my home state, and I love reading and writing novels set in Louisiana. I also write mystery, suspense, and romantic suspense because I grew up on Nancy Drew, and a novel that can tie the components of mystery, suspense, romance, and intrigue all in the same book is one I'll love, as I did this one. It's not a perfect book, but it's about as near as one can come. The only thing I noticed was a few words with no spacing and one or two typos. The story is one that will keep you reading and holds your interest. While I perfer books that come to a conclusion with all issues solved in one, this one does have a parital conclusion with problems solved until Gabe's mom enters the picture again seeming to set things up for a sequel. Of course, I'll want to read that one, too, if I'm right. My novel Southern Superstitions is about a Louisiana swamp, Manchac Swamp, not far from New Orleans, so this one snagged me when I realized it was a similar setting. I love Louisiana plantation novels or swamp ones. I can't wait to discover and read more from this author.

Praise for Black Water Bayou

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Unique and fat-paced. Although there are stories about demons and possession, this is different. The man protagonist isn't a priest, but a special completely human man with a believable ability. he female protagonist is strong but has her vulnerable side also. She isn't a hard nosed, unfeeling "witch" but neither is she a simpering weakling. The balance of these two characters is what makes this book so good. He knows there is no future for them, but his heart tells him something different. She needs to save her family and will do anything to make that happen. The twists and turns will have you saying "WHAT?? I never saw that coming.

amazing narrator

easily one of the best narrators I've listened to in all the years I've been a member of audible. The story itself was enjoyable and then you know, killer clowns are never bad

Dark but enjoyable

If you could sum up No Laughing Matter in three words, what would they be?

Dark, Noir, Fantasy

What was one of the most memorable moments of No Laughing Matter?

There is a Great scene with a little kid helping the detective.

Have you listened to any of Charles Graydon Schlichter IIIs other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. This is one of the ones I like the best so far, along with Temple of the Jaguar.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Very much so - I wanted to know what happened.

Any additional comments?

This is a great story, but it IS dark, and you need to go in knowing that.

Title: The Convert

Author: Fred Anderson

Narrator: Tim Blake

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 30 mins

Language: English

Release date: 02-25-13

Publisher: Fred Anderson

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal

Publisher's Summary:

A childhood accident put Dan Mackenzie in a wheelchair, but he hasn't let that slow him down. He's made a good life for himself in the Florida panhandle, working as a computer geek and playing basketball with his buddies on the weekends. That's where he notices the pretty woman with eyes as green as the Gulf of Mexico watching him. He works up the nerve to introduce himself, and the two hit it off.

On the way to their first date someone tries to kill her, and Dan's heroic effort to save her profoundly changes his life. The two have become separated, and now Dan is fast learning that people are not at all what they seem. There are powers at work he never dreamed existed.

Worst of all, they really want him dead.

Members Reviews:

Fast-paced original thriller, already waiting for sequel.

Fred Anderson's "The Convert" is reminiscent of Stephen King novels, the ones where almost everything in the world is normal except for one key aspect. Weaving you through the early life and present day of Dan Mackenzie, the story follows Dan through a tragic childhood accident and his meeting with a mysterious benefactress who bestows on him the title of "convert." Finding out just what that means and what will happen is page-turning and satisfying, with room for more (I hope there is more!)

Anderson's story-telling and character dialogue are highlights for me, bringing you in closer to the action. Also, the constant flow of action keeps the reader interested and engaged. Of the stories available, The Convert is by far my favorite of the bunch.

Highly entertaining!

My reviews don't give a plot synopsis; I highlight what did or didn't work for me in the character development or the writing.

I read "No Limit" and "The Convert" back to back and I'm glad I did. The author mentions a few events from "No Limit" in this book, which doesn't mean it's a prerequisite for reading or a sequel, because it's not. It's a technique that I appreciate and enjoy.

For those who care, there is a strong religious faith theme in "The Convert" that is completely necessary to the story line and is in no way "preachy" or attempting to 'convert' anyone. The author explains this choice in his Author's Note at the end. Also being from the Bible buckle, I found it to be very realistic and normal for the character and the setting. I just wanted to mention it because some people want to know about that, just as they want to know about blood, gore and violence. There also happens to be a goodly amount of blood, gore and violence, which also supports the storyline very well.

As I mention in my review of "No Limit", I enjoyed this book slightly more, so I gave it a higher rating. The storyline appealed to me and was within the limits of my credulity. The author has a good voice for the characters and is able to take one idea and create an interesting, fully-fleshed novel out of it. I was engaged all the way through and honestly hated for it to end.

Very well-written, edited (!) and cohesive. Many self-pub authors thank their friends and beta readers, but the finished product is still rife with errors. That's not the case here, thankfully! Fred Anderson has a pretty well-developed gift already.

Title: Murdered by Human Wolves

Author: Steven E. Wedel

Narrator: Gwendolyn Jensen-Woodard

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-16-12

Publisher: Steven E. Wedel

Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal

Publisher's Summary:

Fact: In 1917, Katherine Cross was murdered. Her gravestone in Konawa, OK, bears the epitaph Murdered By Human Wolves. This is her story. Acclaimed werewolf saga author Steven E. Wedel touches again the universe he portrayed in his first novel, Shara. Murdered by Human Wolves is that rare mix of fact and fiction that brings out an incredible story. Teamed up with the fictional account in this exclusive volume is Steven's essay "On the Trail of Werewolves: An Interview with Mary Franklin, Paranormal Researcher" which details the findings of her researches in the Konawa cemetery where Katherine Cross is buried.

Members Reviews:

Five Stars

Excellent book, enjoyed reading it.

Five Stars

Excellent book series. I would definitely recommend to others.

Five Stars

Best of the best

Who knows!

Well, I've never been much on believing in werewolves. However, after reading this story, I admit that I have to question it. I would like to hear more from the families. Have they ever been interviewed? This is a great book, I would definitely read it again. The only thing I wasn't happy with is how it ended. Would have liked to of had more detail about what happened between Thomas and the Dr. Did he really do as he said he planned to do? I will definitely read about this again if more is written on this story.

Fast paced with wonderful characters

Steven E. Wedel has taken it upon himself to resurrect an often overlooked area of the genre, werewolves - and he's doing quite a job of it! With his upcoming "Murdered by Human Wolves" he rounds off his werewolf collection with a story based on facts.

Based on fact brings a new level to any story, the 'what if' factor. First, how much of this is real? Could be real? The 'facts' in this story add more by making you curious of the epitaphs in your own graveyards... what do they really mean?

"Murdered by Human Wolves" is an amazing tale that introduces you to the innocence and curiosity of youth, the dangers around them, and leaves you thinking. Monsters DO exist. Besides those of folklore, legend, and fiction - we meet and greet them every day and unbeknownst to us, they carry on. This story offers several 'monsters' - you decide who the real monsters are!

Fast paced with wonderful characters, Wedel gives us another piece of his vision with style and atmosphere. This one is definately worth getting, and remember it includes a very interesting interview/investigation into Katherine Cross' life and death. The book will be available as an e-book and in print, near the end of January 2004. Wedel will be signing 25 copies of the book for use in contests, promotions, etc. Watch the HorrorWeb for more information...

Rating? Definately a five.

Members Reviews:

Great Listen, Ghosts, Guitars, and Humor!

Would you consider the audio edition of No Surrender to be better than the print version?

Loved the story, like Butch and Sundance, Bayou and Razor (think Clint Eastwood type) his father, are owners of the most powerful guitar of all time, Leslie Quinn, the beautiful powerful owner of the Bloodstone, all working together to kill the evil ghosts invading the world. Love Chase Walkers voice. Good job.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Razor, funny, mean, get with it, kill them first, ask questions later. Loves grits and gravy.

Have you listened to any of Chase Walkers other performances before? How does this one compare?

yes, excellent, he only has two recordings out.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me laugh and cry. The father Razor made me laugh, the love of Bayou for his daughter in certain scenes was touching.

Any additional comments?

Great for road travelers.

It's a Rock and Roll Damnation - AC/DC

I loved this unique take on fighting ghosts. At last Hard Rock is lauded as benefiting society. This is a very entertaining book with plenty of fun pop culture references and I can't wait for the next one
