Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Many business audiobooks fuel unrealistic notions about what a good idea looks like, how fast a founder should attract investment, and how quickly growth will take off. The problem with this mythology is that it can sometimes end with entrepreneurs abandoning their dreams too soon if they don't see immediate results.
In The Hockey Stick Principles, author Bobby Martin shifts his focus away from all the hype about rapid growth and the pursuit of funding and instead takes a look at the real process behind getting a good idea off the ground. Using a hockey stick as a metaphor and highlighting four key phases, Martin shows the healthy way a business should grow and uses entertaining stories and interviews with successful entrepreneurs, like the founders of LendingTree, Under Armour, and iContact, woven throughout the audiobook not only to share a wealth of advice but to chronicle the ins and outs of these different phases:
Innovation almost always involves a number of challenges, misdirections, and uncertainty and can take several years of struggle. But The Hockey Stick Principles gives aspiring entrepreneurs and those in the midst of the messy process a realistic, human, and inspiring understanding of what starting an innovative business is like while teaching you what to look out for along the way as you shepherd your business through to success.

An author that gets it because he lived it! Realistic preview of what it is like to launch a high growth startup.
Bobby Martin is the real deal. He has lived the life of an entrepreneur and angel investor. As a result, his writing is high on practicality/realism and low on theory (and in this case that is a great thing). In addition, his writing is fluid, he is a great storyteller which allows him to bring his concepts to life through anecdote. He doesn't stop there though, he actually went out and interviewed over 100 companies in order to gather data to test his assumptions. This was what really put this book over the top for me. Not only has he put out a product that is easy to read and relate to, he has inserted some rigor into his lessons by drawing on some data beyond his own personal experience. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to the process of building or getting involved with a high growth startup.

Bobby does a good job of laying out why hockey players lose a few teeth along the way to the big leagues. As most entrepreneurs learn, there is no single path to accelerating growth in your business. The book does a nice job of concisely providing examples of multiple paths entrepreneurs have had to take to figure out what works best for their business. Great book for investors and board/advisors to growth companies. Would love to see a sequel focused on old-line businesses and see what paths they have taken to their success.
A really good read for anyone thinking about a startup
A really good read for anyone thinking about a startup. From the decisions that need to be addressed, to setting realistic expectations "Hockey Stick Principles" is right on target.
A candid and gritty look at finding entrepreneurial success
This is a great book for any entrepreneur who really wants to dig in and gain practical insights from others who have been there.

  • The Magic Cup Audiobook by Howard Behar, Jeffrey Brotman - foreword

    Title: The Magic Cup
Subtitle: A Business Parable About a Leader, a Team, and the Power of Putting People and Values First
Author: Howard Behar, Jeffrey Brotman - foreword
    Narrator: Christian Steiner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-29-16
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
We all love the fairy tales we grew up on, creating a world in which good always wins over evil, where those whose hearts are true and who do the right thing come out on top. But grown-up competition for success is rough, even cutthroat, and we've often heard that nice guys finish last.
Not according to Howard Behar, whose career as one of the three leaders who built the Starbucks organization most definitely proves that nice guys finish first. In The Magic Cup, Behar spins an engaging corporate tale to teach us exactly how we can do the same thing.
The story revolves around Vince Steadfast, the newly named CEO of imaginary manufacturer Verity Glassworks, which has fallen on difficult times. Vince is hired to help the once iconic company return to its glory days, and he brings with him a parting gift from his mentor and former boss: a stunning crystal coffee cup from Verity's halcyon days. The cup turns out to be magic - truly - and helps him come to understand and reinvigorate the values that Verity has misplaced along the way.
As Vince and his new team make their way to (and through) many challenges, including the aptly named Worthy Way, Perilous Passage, and Arduous Stair, the cup fills with a gold elixir, and the universal truths that they learn to embrace - such as responsibility, forgiveness, and courage - magically become engraved in the glass.
In the tradition of great parable writers throughout history, Behar quickly involves us in an engrossing fantasy, continually challenging us to compare each situation with our own real-life experiences. The story of The Magic Cup helps each of us discover that only by acting on sound moral principles can we fill our own cups with the personal and professional success and satisfaction we seek.
    Members Reviews:
    Story too simple
The story is silly, makes little sense and teaches nothing but basic concepts of leadership.
    Brilliant and relevant
Tip of the hat to Howard Behar for this corporate fable I relate with. The story and characters are the makings of a film. May this message serve millions!

    Publisher's Summary:
Outsourcing is nothing new. Brick and mortar businesses have been doing it for years. But what may surprise some people is that online entrepreneurs can also use this common business strategy with a great deal of effect. Of course, outsourcing is not ideal for everyone. But by understanding the basics of what outsourcing is, how it works, and how it can benefit a business, it is possible to make an informed decision about whether the approach is right for your business.
In the broadest sense, outsourcing is an approach to task management that involves utilizing resources that are outside the direct control of the company to handle tasks that are relevant to the operation and success of the business. Generally, this involves contracting with a service provider to handle the specific function for a specific period of time and with guidelines that are agreeable to both parties. In some cases, the service may be granted limited powers to act in the stead of the client, if that is necessary to perform the contracted tasks. The main function of outsourcing is often to allow employees to focus on company operations that may be more detailed and directly related to the growth of the business. Daily housekeeping issues are handled by outside firms, who do the job at a fraction of what it would cost for a full-time staff to accomplish the same tasks. This helps to minimize the amount of clerical support that is needed in-house, and thus keep employee-related expenses relatively low.

Management Parable that Emphasizes Proven Methods & Introduces New Ideas for Leaders
Rapid Teamwork is the management parable for the 21st century leader.
Glaze introduces you to a team of people that any leader could relate to, then skillfully crafts a story about creating a successful, cohesive team. The point he makes using the acronym GREAT are solid, proven advice when it comes to leading a team. But what I especially like about the book were some unique points that Glaze makes that I havenât seen in other management writings.
The exercise on rapport building is something you can take directly to your own team. What he says about the value of silos and cliques in the workplace and how to capitalize and expand their influence is a great example of working with human nature, rather than against it. And the tie between emotional connection and accountability make so much sense, you have to wonder why more leaders arenât willing to get in touch with their feelings.
Iâd recommend this book to any leader looking how they can rapidly improve their own team.
    This advice is GREAT!
Fun to read and awesome team building tips
What a great book. Sean Glaze managed to get everything you need to know about building a great team into one easy and fun to read fictional story. Never expected this. I can only hope that everyone will get this book. I highly recommend it.
    Awesome
A very powerful parable for leading in today's chaotic world where "instant" success is the expectation. Full of tips on how to create a GREAT team in a minimum amount of time - definitely worth the investment!
Parable version of your next management team building session
Rapid Teamwork is a parable version of Sean Glaze's 15 years of leadership development experience. In coaching and mentoring of leaders, the eyes and mouth of a stranger, e.g. consultant, sports trainer, or senior, are helpful to get a leader or team of leaders moving again towards performing. The management team in this booklet is disconnected, focused on results rather than people, and cannot decide what needs to be changed.

  • All Hands on Deck Audiobook by Peter J. Boni

    Title: All Hands on Deck
Subtitle: Navigating Your Team Through Crises, Getting Your Organization Unstuck, and Emerging Victorious
    Author: Peter J. Boni
    Narrator: Walter Dixon
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-23-15
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Disruption creates 10 times the opportunity to advance your organization and your career, according to former CEO and author Peter J. Boni. In All Hands on Deck: Navigating Your Team Through Crisis, Getting Your Organization Unstuck, and Emerging Victorious, Boni shows any leader or aspiring leader exactly what to do. Following his advice, recognition and rewards come quickly. It allows leaders with or without MBAs or Ivy League educations to leapfrog over those who have superior credentials or stronger ties to an old boys' network.
Beginning with the riveting, true story of Massachusetts clipper ship captain Josiah Nickerson Knowles, who saved his crew and all but one passenger during not one but two shipwrecks in the Pacific, author Peter J. Boni demonstrates how adversity should be embraced rather than avoided. Boni presents a proven process to overcome chaos and disorder. By interviewing himself as the CEO of embattled Safeguard Scientifics as well as five prominent C-suite executives who triumphed over difficulties in the fields of consumer products, health care, biotech, nonprofit, and academia, we understand the thinking and actions necessary to get and keep organizations out of trouble and onto solid ground.
The 12-Step Kedge-Off Process that Boni created is a blueprint for repositioning organizations and a model for any executive facing business dysfunctions and setbacks. The process is divided into three phases, each anchored with the easy-to-remember moniker the "ABCs to Advance": Boni would agree that you cannot prevent the storms that are inevitable in real-life situations. But with his ABCs to Advance as well as the instructive real-life stories of All Hands on Deck, we have a valuable guide for how to think in a crisis and how to cultivate the character traits to become an effective leader. While the techniques will get you out of a jam, use them early enough and they may very well keep you out of a jam.
    Critic Reviews:
"During his four-decade career, debut author Peter Boni has specialized in turning companies around. In All Hands on Deck, Boni admirably walks the listener through the phases and steps of the process, using both historical and contemporary examples to support his premise that disruption creates 10 times (10x) the opportunity to advance."
