A wicked and sharp collection of gay-themed short fiction by author L.A. Fields. These are neither simple nor for simpletons. Fields's takes great delight in being provocative and the reward is being show relationships that are dark yet thoroughly engaging.
    Definately worth reading.
I have admit when I started the book I was disturbed by the subject matter of the first two stories, but as I kept reading things started moving along and just when I thought I knew what was Going on, I kept being surprised. And that is wonderful, that's the kind of thing I hope for whenever I discover a new book. I highly recommend this book, I enjoyed it very much.
    A Great Collection
Countrycide is a well-written and disturbingly beautiful book. The stories take the reader into dark passageways of love, lust, and desire. They push many boundaries, but never quite cross the line. You will shudder, cringe, gasp, and even laugh. It will keep the reader turning the pages into the early morning hours.

Two lovable, Topperesque apparitions from turn-of-the-century America haunt the sometimes-bewildered Rick as struggles to face the enormous problems of contemporary society as the 21st century is about to turn. This sweet historical romance has layers of gay spirituality woven throughout the romance and just a touch of The Twilight Zone.

Gives new perspectives on love, life, and death
A very interesting book unlike anything else I read or listened to. There's the main character in the 'modern' time (the 90s, as that's when the book was first published) and the lives of two men who the main charcater may have made up for his story or may be spirits from the past.
For me, both periods are in the past and it was interesting to reflect on gay lives in that time. The characters were likeable and even if the plot was at times OTT with unlikely coincidents and had some lengths, the author aknowledged it with a wink and it didn't bother me as much anymore. He knew it broke some storytelling conventions and he still had to break them to tell his story in the way he wanted to. The fact that I was draen into the story and cared for the fate of a fictional character and the fictional characters that character may have dreamed up shows it succeeded for me to large extends.
I also loved the introduction of this new edition that gives readers and listeners a new perspective (heh) on the author and the story after many years have past. The narration was good and I feel fortunate to have had the chance to review this fantastical, charming & advrnturous love story <3

    Good First Effort
"Rooftops" was a different kind of read for me. First, there are no chapters, the book is simply divided up into three months. Then it is written almost in a diary style, where you get snippets of events during that month. It also covers a short period of time, the three months following the graduation from college of three friends. For me, Erick was not likable from the start, Rhys was likable but also a bit of a flake, and Joey was very likable and also seemed the most real. Some of the events these guys go through seemed a little far fetched for me at times. Also there were some side characters introduced that didn't really seem to go anywhere. Having said all of that, I have to say this was a very good first effort by the author. I was drawn into this story and finished it in one day which is rare for me to do.
    Looking for more!
An excellent start! For a first time effort Mr. Wiley has hit a homer. If he continues in this vein, we can expect more good reads from him. It was a delightful experience and I enjoyed it completely. He stuck to his characters and did not get hung up on the surrounding background and detail. If not L.A., it could have been in any city and been just as effective. His characters were believable and well developed. His use of emotion was right on and allowed you to see what was going on clearly. It has a happy ending and that usually leaves the reader in a good place. Keep up the good work, John. This one is a winner!
    A very good book!
This is a very good book. When I read the previous review, I decided to purchase the book. This book kept my interest and made me feel like I was on the journey too. Bravo John Wiley! I can' t until your next adventure in book number 2.
    Rooftops
For a first effort, I thought the book was amazing. The characters were real and the story line was well developed. I was interested from beginning to end. I hope this author will write more books. I will surely buy them.
    Five Stars
Loved it! Was sweet and funny!

    I loved this book
It may be old and seem dated, but so many contemporary books are so formulaic they just churn out the same old thing with different names and places, nothing original about them.
But this book was for me a wonderful read, it is well narrated and quite addictive until the last word..

    Title: Shockproof Sydney Skate
    Author: M. E. Kerr

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-03-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Gay & Lesbian
    Publisher's Summary:
A uniquely witty novel exploring sex, freedom, and the process of growing up
Sydney Skate considers himself shockproof. For as long as he can remember, he's known that his fashionable Manhattan mother is secretly a lesbian, although he's never let on that he knows. He spends his summer days caring for snakes at the local pet shop before leaving for college at Cornell, shrugging off his father's demands that he skip college and join the exciting world of swimming pool sales for suburbanites.
Far from throwing himself into work, Sydney can't seem to keep his thoughts from wandering to women. He has memorized the sex scenes of every book he's ever read in order to better seduce the opposite gender. When he's called to help remove a snake from a bathtub that belongs to the gorgeous and sophisticated Alison Gray, everything changes. But nothing could prepare him for his glamorous mother sweeping the girl of his dreams off her feet.
This hypnotizing coming-of-age story captures the timeless ecstasies and struggles of adolescence, and has been a classic of lesbian literature since it was first published in 1973. Hailed as the Catcher in the Rye of the seventies, Shockproof Sydney Skate exposes the confusion of its time and remains keenly relevant to the sexual absurdities of today.

    Good Message, Okay Story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The pacing of this book is extremely slow.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I will probably listen to a dystopian adventure, a hipster love story, or a collection of feminist essays.
What didnt you like about Graham Halsteads performance?
I felt that the narrator could not properly imitate women's voices. I question whether or not narrators should even attempt to mimic accents or voices that vary with race, age, sex, etc. It sounded as if he was mocking women, making them sound dramatic and whiny. Most women don't sound like snobby, hoity-toity, whiny drama queens. His narration made the story difficult to enjoy because when female characters sound stupid, you begin to believe they ARE stupid.
Was Shockproof Sydney Skate worth the listening time?
I'm not sure this book is suited for audio. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read a hard copy.
    Any additional comments?
This book is memorable with unlikeable yet interesting characters. While the subject matter convinced me to listen, it wasn't as exciting or engaging as I thought it would be. Overall, it's a good book that will stick with you for a long time, but it's not necessarily an enjoyable read.

Toned down version of Aaron by the same author
If you could sum up A Broken Kind of Life in three words, what would they be?
    Post-traumatic Recovery Romance
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Broken Kind of Life?
One of the less obvious moments but one that really appealed to me and "sold" the whole idea of Aaron's supportive family takes place at a family restaurant. Aaron's two younger brothers both do some serious looking-out for their big brother in really sweet ways. One by simply taking him outside to "ride out" a panic attack and one by ordering off the child's menu so that his big brother can have the meal he really wants.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I listened to the audio-book version of both books, Aaron was narrated by Tyler Stevens. Stevens did an amazing job with the narration. The voices of the main characters are easily distinguished and fit well with my conception of the characters. Stevens also did a brilliant job of switching between Spencer's cadences as a deaf speaker and the more common cadences of the hearing speakers. he also did a remarkable reversion to child-speak voice that Aaron uses when panicked that was particularly effective. Tristan Wright did the narration for The YA version a Broken Kind of Life and was good but having heard Stevens' version first, I missed some of the brilliance of his performance. Both audio versions suffered a bit in that there are several very rough segues between time changes. Perhaps these should have been separated into chapters or there might have been a musical cue. As presented the abrupt changes were at times hard to follow
    Any additional comments?
Two years ago Aaron's life as he knew it ended when he and his best friend Juliet stopped to give directions to the men in the beat-up van that hailed them. Now Juliet is in the cemetery and most days Aaron wishes he was too. Instead he lives in state of near constant terror unable to look at his scarred face in the mirror or even shower his burned and scarred body without flashing back on the horrifying events of that day.

    Wrong narrator for story
    Any additional comments?
This could have been a fun listen. I enjoyed the story itself, but the narrator was completely wrong for the story. These guys were suppose to be diva's but the narrator had an older gruff voice. He definitely didn't sound like a diva. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if I had read it instead of listening to it.

    Publisher's Summary:
What if you learned that the AIDS virus was the result of bioweapons research gone bad, and that somebody knew and was hiding the truth? What if there's a cure? Could you trust your source of information? Could you trust your own perceptions? Could you act on such information? And what would you do? This is the situation that San Francisco AIDS counsellor Jonathan Stiers finds himself enmeshed in in this wisdom-tinged thriller novel by gay spiritual writer, student of Joseph Campbell and former editor of White Crane Journal Toby Johnson.
Originally published in 1987 when AIDS was still a mystery disease, successful treatments had not been developed and spiritual/attitudinal healing--of soul, if not of body--was the only hope, this novel, with its explanations of healing and presentation of wisdom from A Course in Miracles and The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment, was originally titled Plague: A Novel about Healing.
Twenty-five years later, the novel's quandary about the nature of evil and its message of hopeful acceptance and love of life are still relevant, perhaps even more so. The story of the ''fourth quill'' comes from an Indian tale about a previous incarnation of the Buddha who discovers the ''treasure of the ages'' and it's not what he'd expected; Johnson retells the tale and derives a meaningful and life-affirming attitude that transcends the specific issues of AIDS in the 1980s.
The Fourth Quill recasts the story into a parallel universe with a surprising and happy ending where Jon Stiers really can wonder if he has brought about the cure of AIDS. Woven through the hero/adventure plot is a lovely and heartwarming romance--with an unexpected twist. A little modern, scientific and sensible and a little mystical, The Fourth Quill exemplifies Toby Johnson's style of dramatizing gay spirit through storytelling and speculative fiction. This is a parallel universe readers will likely remember and come back to.
    Members Reviews:
    A Page-Turner and Spiritual Quest
The Fourth Quill is an engaging beach read, a page-turning thriller, a quest to understand the nature of suffering, and a cautionary tale of good intentions gone awry. A lesser-skilled author and spiritual thinker could hardly pull off such a feat, but in the deft hands of Toby Johnson, The Fourth Quill delivers entertainment and spiritual insight.
Johnsonâs treatment of the pre-cocktail AIDS era rings with spot-on authenticity, but one need not have lived it to get pulled into the very human stories his characters tell. At times light, funny, heart-breaking, and enraging, Johnson shows the reader a way out of suffering and a path to healing. A disarmingly easy read, this book packs insights that will keep you thinking long after youâve turned the last page.
    a rush
reading this was a rush - eg the whole enlightenment episode in the cupboard carried me right along, great to read such a vivid description of that deep inner process, facing despair and glory, breaking through to peace. not many books contain that. i found the story captivating, was not expecting the gear change into espionage! the book carries the emotional intensity of the aids years and records the spiritual headiness that went with it.

    Horrible narration!
Didn't even finish chapter one. Audra Reed is an awesome mms romance writer..but bad narration will put a slowly mind warp on anything...procced at ur own risk!
    Editing?
    Any additional comments?
The runtime of this recording should be about 10% shorter than posted. There are so many unedited word, phase or sentence repeats that I wanted to through my player at the wall. Totally an amateur job.
3 Strikes, including audio that is abysmal
    3-Strikes:
    1) Poor writing quality of the book itself
    2) Terribly edited audio with repetition of sentences like skip/scratches in a vinyl record. This audio is so terrible, that I think audible/Amazon shouldn't sell it. I seriously thought of calling customer service to request a refund!
    3) Subpar audio narration: The narrator sounds like he's, well...reading. I don't like a narrator who "just" reads. I can read a book aloud myself without paying for an audiobook.
