Good dive into a world not known by many. Tarot.
What made the experience of listening to Brent the most enjoyable?
It's descriptive. Chris narrates with enthusiasm and purposefully as the character Brent should. It's not monotone. And thus, it kept me interested.
What did you like best about this story?
Learning about Tarot and the meanings of the cards. From the sounds of it, the author knows what he's talking about. Otherwise, he has a vivid imagination.
Have you listened to any of Chris Pattons other performances? How does this one compare?
He does quite adequately (Yesterday's Gone). In this though, I feel he's done much better. Although this is dependent on how the story is written I suppose.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I found the scene with the photographs in the beginning quite amusing.
    Any additional comments?
I found it an enjoyable listen. Although, the speed at which the couple became hopelessly entwined was unrealistic, this was balanced for the better with the interesting topic of Tarot and the quirks of Brent and his thought process. The twist in the danger was also quite anti-climactic and I was hoping for more into the backstory and more into the danger than the jibber-jabber of the new family.

A very witty book, I just started it and I love it.
I have not gotten far, but this is the book I've been longing for. I love gay cabaret, the setting of the book is in the drag queen subculture of Key West, the story takes place in a gay nightclub. I've always been fascinated by Key West, the location of the story. I know this is one book that will keep me entertained. The author allowed that there was a real murder that occurred in a gay, NYC nightclub, that inspired her. It remains to be seen if this is a variant of a "roman a clef".
This book is for lovers of RuPaul, Harvey Firestein and Armested Maupin's Tales of the City. There have been so many serious issues in the gay communities of all our cities, as well as our nation as a whole; it's time to get laid back and enjoy a good dramedy.
Wings go flying-Drag queens drop like flies!!!!!
Another master piece by Yvonne Mason.
A truly good read into the world of Drag Queens

A terrific (dare I say FABULOUS read). I thoroughly enjoyed it. Love the way it also gives the details about drag and the NY info. It roped me in from the get-go and kept me in until the very end. A absolutely delightful MUST read.
    I couldn't put it down!
I was waiting for this release since I first heard about it. It definitely lived up to the hype! I stayed up late several nights just to finish it because I needed to know what was going to happen! There are several times I was laughing out loud, and I also loved how descriptive the author is. Overall a very entertaining read.

odd story. story would have been better if I had ordered a book form rather than disc. reader had the worst irish accent I've ever heard.

    Genres: Fiction, Gay & Lesbian
    Publisher's Summary:
In 2000, Douglas A. Martin burst onto the American literary scene with his sexy debut novel, Outline of My Lover. Following up with three more books, including Branwell, a novel of the Bront brother, Martin has established himself as an acclaimed and distinctive American writer of the new century. His semi-autobiographical novel Once You Go Back is about growing up in a strained working-class household transplanted to the South.
In his inimitably elliptical and evocative style, Martin carefully brings out the curiosity of children on the verge of becoming sexual, and their confusion in the midst of family violence.
    Members Reviews:
    Life changing
This novel changed my life. I was at the lowest spot I'd been in for awhile, and everything was going to hell. From the first sentence, "Pretend you are my sister," I knew this was what would help me get through the day.
I think I read it straight through. I cried, I smiled, I felt safe. Enjoyed it so much that I bought several copies for family and friends for birthday and holiday presents.
I'm not sure what I can say about the text. Saying it's poetic takes away from Martin's mastery of words, and his ability to convey emotion. He's subtle, yet there's no mistake about every action that happens. The reader feels.
I think it's a must read for any aspiring writer, especially ones interested in writing about GLBTQ themes. Dancers should read this too...
    an absorbing tale of childhood
The reader is drawn into this book from the very first sentence and quickly becomes totally involved in this story of a boy growing up in a home where, amidst much confusion and insecurity, he never quite feels he belongs.
The book moves quickly from one episode to the next, in a series of stories, like a series of snapshots, with the absence of the boy's real father being a theme that runs through the book. The scenes are so beautifully and poetically written, and with so much feeling that it becomes a book that you simply won't be able to put down.

a sweet story of following the heart
Soul in His Eyes by Christine London
    Kindle Edition - Mar 31, 2008
    4 1/2 Stars
What if you wrote a letter to a famous person and the letter actually reached that person? What if the letter sparked a friendship that transcended distance? What if that friendship turned into something more? Christine London's Soul in the Eyes explores, in a sweet, touching, feel-good way, these "ifs".
Christine Rose lives a happy life. She has two children, a husband that loves her and a fulfilling teaching job. Moved by a force that she can't explain, she writes a letter to famous actor Erik Bartholomew.
To the world, Erik lives a perfect famous life: success, money and adoring fans. But in his private life, he's lonely and disconnected. When he received Christine's letter, he immediately feels a connection towards her words and pictures.
A letter exchange between the two sparks a friendship and feelings that neither expected. Suddenly Christine's life takes a tragic turn. Through the friendship vine, Erik learns of this, but he's stuck in Iceland making a movie. The race to get to Christine begins, but what will happen when he reaches her? Here is where the fantasy begins.
Christine London writes a sweet story of following the heart. She encourages, through her characters, a leap of faith even when it looks too-good-to-be-true. Christine and Erik are strong and self-assured, and together find the trust needed to open the door of friendship and love. In addition, she gives each character strong, supportive friends that take on the super-role of rescuers when needed.
This book left me with the feeling that anything is possible if you just take a chance. It's a message that inspires action, because you just never know what may happen "if".

    Great reads by Christine London
Christine London's books are very well written and easy to read. She makes the story come alive with her descriptions. The stories are interwoven with twists and turns that keep the reader intrigued from beginning to end. I would recommend any of her books, they are all well worth reading!
    Every Woman's Fantasy
Ms. London has taken a rather common premise (every woman's fantasy to catch the eye and attention of a movie star) and breathed new life into it. Soul in His eyes is fast-paced, sexy, and has enough twists and turns to entertain from start to finish.
    Soul In His Eyes
Complex and touchingly honest. In this quintessentially feminine work, Ms London indirectly exposes the fantasies and desires that modern women, from early teens to middle age, are often reluctant to reveal.
    Don't rush through this one.

Was ahead of its time in 1966, not so great 40+ years later ...
Before starting his first year at the US Naval Academy, 20 year old Dennis Eastman flies to Los Angeles for a reunion with his well-to-do older lover, Linc Gardner. He is shocked to be met by a police detective who informs him that Linc had been murdered a few evenings before, possibly by a stranger named "Jeff" whose name was found on a note in the apartment, whom he supposedly met at a notorious leather bar. Dennis decides to spend his vacation trying to go undercover at the bar, with hopes of avenging Linc's death by bringing the murderer to justice.
A simple plot, but I figured a skilled author could do a good job with it. What I didn't know, when I selected the book, is that this book was actually first published in 1966, and was never updated for its current release, making it sound quite dated at times (smoking on airplanes, buying a new car for $[...], communicating in days before cell phones, pre-Stonewall "gay hide" mentality, etc.) It was actually quite "ahead of its time" 40+ years ago, but is somewhat predictable and plodding today. You'd also think something would have been done about the numerous word-uage errors in the book, which must have been just as obvious back then. Overall, I can't give the book more than 3 stars out of 5, compared to current fiction out there.

And with those words, Neal introduces an eerie tale of betrayal that leads to murder....
    Members Reviews:
    Taunt Suspense
"A Man of Principle" is written in a tight, suspenseful style that fits the story perfectly. The suspense builds as the narrator's guest cannot seem to stop himself from confessing what happened to him. Or maybe he's telling it deliberately. Can the narrator and the reader believe every word he says? Read this story and judge for yourself.
A Man of Principle by Victor J. Banis
This short story is for sure not a romance, or at least it's not among the two men in it; the narrator (without name) and Neal met in a bar one ordinary night: what normally could lead to a one night stand, lead instead to a confession that will allow Neal to alleviate his conscience, but probably not his heart.
When I said that this is not a romance between the narrator and Neal, I was simply stating the obvious: not only Neal clearly claims he is not gay (maybe even a little too clearly), but I haven't neither read any vibes in him he can be interested in the narrator, at least not in him as a possible lover. Neal, in his way, his mourning the loss of his best friend Jack, who was gay, but that was only a friend; Neal is quite clear on this point, arriving to stating it to the narrator more than once, wanting for the narrator to believe it... or maybe wanting for himself to believe it.
Jack is dead and nothing could bring him back; with his death, unwillingly, he destroyed also Neal's life and not only in a material point of view. I think that, once Neal lost Jack, only then he realized Jack was really important for him. Neal was always jealous of Jack, true until the moment Jack had no serious relationship it was not an issue: Jack was promiscuous, but he was not in any relationship if not the one of friendship he had with Neal; so in a way the only real relationship was that one and Neal was happy with that. But when Jack met Lonnie and he wanted to build a life with him, Neal saw the future was holding for him nothing. He didn't do anything drastic to end Jack and Lonnie's relationship but he also did nothing to help them and in doing so, he directed Jack towards the path leading to his death. It was not Neal's fault. But Neal felt guilty, and I think he was right in feeling that. What he did after that, again I don't think he did to vengeance Jack, I think it was more a vengeance to himself, an ultimate act of jealousy.
This short tale is extremely well balance, full of suspense and simple in its drama; the ending is surprisingly "quite", but it's a quietness that silently scream hurt, pain and yes, also a little bit of horror.
An excellent example of Mr. Banis' work

    Publisher's Summary:
Sandro Vasiliadis, a nurse at the Whidbey Island General Hospital, has died of an apparent heroin overdose. When his grieving mother bends over to kiss her son's corpse at the viewing, she shrieks, "That's not Sandro!" Convinced that her son must still be alive, Maria Vasiliadis hires Kyra Rachel and Noel Franklin to solve the mystery. With questions of foul play continuing to swirl around the death, the detectives' inquiries lead them deeper into Sandro's life and eventually to a medical clinic that specializes in transgendering.
The second in the Islands Investigations International Mystery series, Always Kiss the Corpse takes Kyra and Noel's investigation from the rush of Seattle to the seeming peace of the San Juan Islands in this thrilling pause-resistor. It's only once the detectives come to understand Sandro in life that they unlock the secret to his death.
    Editorial Reviews:
John Morgan deftly shifts tones in his electric reading of Sandy Frances Duncan and George Szanto's engrossing second volume of their Island Investigations International series, effortlessly switching from the thick accent of a grieving Greek mother to the whip-smart banter between the amateur sleuths Kyra Rachel and Noel Franklin, who attempt to wade through the shroud of fog surrounding the death of Sandro Vasiliadis: Did he die of a heroin overdose, or did his connection to a medical clinic specializing in transgender operations play a role in his demise?
John Morgan's superb performance will keep the listener compelled as this gripping mystery unfolds.
    Critic Reviews:
"Duncan and Szanto bring their A-game to this daring and complex novel." (Lou Allin, Crime Writers of Canada)

    Trouble in Paradise
Island Investigations International (Triple-I) follows up its initial success, Never Sleep with a Suspect on Gabriola Island, by crossing the maritime border into equally scenic Puget Sound. Award-winning authors Sandy Duncan and George Szanto dispatch their intrepid and pleasantly eccentric duo to Whidbey Island, not far from Seattle. A bereaved family has a puzzle on its hands.
Sleuths Kyra Rachel and Noel Franklin are hired to find out why a dead man's mother bent over his corpse at the funeral home and said, "That's not Sandro!" Is she merely distraught, or has the embalmer botched the job? The conservative Greek community values discretion as much as it prizes manhood. So when Sandro Vasiliades's cheeks seem too smooth for the heavily-bearded masculine figure everyone remembers, Kyra and Noel think they might have an answer. Complicating the case is the sad fact that he died apparently alone in a remote spot from an overdose of heroin. Family and friends swear that he was a happy man who never dabbled in drugs. The truth is critical because in the Greek Orthodox Church a suicide may not be buried on sacred ground.
Once again, the authors showcase the mystique of the Pacific Northwest island culture, whether taking ferries or touching down in a float plane. In the rare temperate rainforest setting, these island jewels sparkle as much as the writing. "He glanced through the float plane's window, so tiny it seemed as if he had to view the constricted panorama with only one eye at a time. Below him the south end of Gabriola Island gave way to Valdez.

Edgar Mason is ready to embark upon his new life at Agamemnon Frost's side. But all is not perfect. His Martian overlord, Pandarus, has implanted a dark voice in his mind, a voice that urges betrayal. And though Mason can keep close to Frost, there's little room for romance under the watchful gaze of the engineers from Station X.
That changes when Mason and Frost reopen their investigation into their old enemy's whereabouts. Posing as double agents and investigating cryptic rumors of "hollow ships," they find him impersonating a London banker and worm their way into his confidence.
But their success soon brings them trouble in spades. Pandarus takes them into the belly of his ships, where he plans to transfigure them into mindless automata. And with Earth on the brink of invasion, Frost's old flame Theodora reappearing, and Pandarus's brainwashing growing more effective, Mason and Frost will find their bond tested as never before.
See how it all began in Agamemnon Frost and the House of Death.
    Members Reviews:
Enjoyable Second Book in the Series
The second Frost Novella sees Mason and Frost acting as double agents hoping to smoke out the aliens. Frost's fiancee, Theadora, may still be alive and Mason isn't quite sure how to handle that situation considering his growing attachment to Frost. There's also the worry that once again Mason may betray Frost to the insistent voices in his head.
In this book, we get more much needed development between Mason and Frost. The noble is still playing it very cool - with Mason not knowing where he stands. There are several hints that Frost isn't as unaffected by mason as he seems - and has a valid reason for keeping his former servant at a distance.
Plot wise, we learn a bit more about the aliens and the group organized to fight them. There are a lot of foreign terms used this time and I admit I did get lost in the somewhat labyrinthine plot at some points. But what I liked most is that Knox was able to use this book to get past the world building and give us more Mason-Frost interaction while still blowing lots of things up.
In all, I am looking forward to the next book!
Book two of a fun series
Reading this series, I got the sense that Ms. Know truly enjoyed her characters and the world she created. Highly recommend for someone looking for something different.
    More Please....
    Another 3 1/2 Stars...
I recieved Agamemnon Frost and the Hollow Ships in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Things get even more intense in this installment. Not only do Frost and Mason need to find Pandarus, the task seems nearly impossible because they don't know `who' he is. That, combined with the fact that Mason is fighting off the pull of Pandarus and the constant battle in his head, keeps things more than interesting.
I'm liking this story more as it goes on. The concept is complicated and the pace is fast, but the characters are interesting. It's been a while since I've visited a Steampunk world, so I'm also enjoying the change of pace.
Once again, nothing is as it seems and even when the characters think they know what to expect, another mystery or complication changes things. I like the unexpected.

And when Joe's tennis partner, the son of the American ambassador, decides to celebrate his eighteenth birthday by appearing unannounced at Joe's BOQ door, the potential difficulties of their love-match must be addressed - seriously and without delay.
    Members Reviews:
A great second entry in the series
"Captain Harding and His Men" is the follow to "Captain Harding's Six-Day War," and is even better than that terrific book. Both follow in the footsteps of Ensan Case's "Wingmen," as stories based on intimate knowledge of the military and the problems of being gay and a committed service member.
In "Men," Joe Harding is still at Wheelus AFB in Libya, a backwater during the Vietnam War, "a very large summer camp with a filling station attached." For an ambitious Captain, there's not much chance of advancement. A plane crashes into that routine existence and escalates from an accident into a clue to a clandestine arms deal that threatens Harding and his friends.
You really have to read "Captain Harding's Six-Day War" before this one. Although Mackle gives good, quick reminders about relevant parts of the earlier book, it will still be tough going for anyone who hasn't read it. In "Men" Captain Joe Harding once again is dealing with his own sometimes reckless behavior, while he shows a strain of brilliance in dealing with regulations that are being subverted by others. Not all the military guys are bad guys, and not all the gay guys are good guys, so the story is nuanced. Readers will find themselves caring about Joe Harding and his men.
Mackle pays his readers the compliment of not writing down to them. You have to pay attention, or you'll miss some subtle shift. There's gay sex here, but all of it exists to forward the character development and plot. What's exciting for Mackle's fans is that there are plenty of hints about upcoming sequels (I hope plural) as Captain Harding applies for a transfer to Vietnam to get the experience he needs to move up the military ladder.
Truly satisfying follow-up to Cpt Harding's Six Day War
Having narrowly averted a major international political crisis less than a year before, US Air Force Captain Joe Harding is endeavouring to stay away from trouble (in both his work-life as well as love-life). The book setting is ensconced in the 1960's and any hint of homosexual scandal spells disaster for any armed forces personnel.
