Fantasy Adventure

Good storyline, in my opinion, but could do without the gay reference of certain characters.

worth a try

This isn't the usual type of book I listen to but I thought I'd give this one a try because the story sounded interesting. This was action-packed and it kept me listening the whole way through. Sadly, this story wasn't for me but I'm glad I took a chance on this one - it was a unique listening experience for me and I think that dark fantasy lovers will really enjoy this. The narration was very good as well.

Dark Fantasy

I got this ARC via audiobook boom and this is my review. I am not a fan of dark fantasy but for those who are you will enjoy this well-developed story. The characters are fleshed out as well as the world they are living in. The narrator was great for this story and seemed to understand what the author wanted from each character and delivered. It is a good listen but not my style.

I think people who love reading dark fantasy novels with larger than life characters, they will love this book. It wasn't for me, but I can recommend it to a couple of my friends who are into that kind of books. For me, the story didn't quite interest me after a while. I thought maybe if I try to read the story in kindle, alongside listening to it in Audible, that might help me like the story more. But I didn't find the book in Overdrive. Hence I had to quite it after some time. That doesn't mean the book is bad though. It just wasn't for me.

Mediocre but original - with a very nice audio book version

The book itself is fairly original, but somewhat is clumsily written and very much a product of its time. It is nowhere near as engaging as Dracula. However, as I said it gets points for originality, and has not been retold as often as Dracula.

What I think made it more worthwhile was the audio book. You can get the Kindle edition for free, then for $1.99 you can add the audiobook version narrated by Oliver Wyman. He's one of the better modern audio book readers I've listened to in the past few years, and does an excellent job with this book. I highly recommend that anyone interested in the book put in the extra $2 to get the decent audio book version and listen to it, either with or without actually reading the Kindle edition.

Disjointed and Odd

I did not enjoy this book as much as I hoped I would. The story seems to have a very strange, broken pace. Plot points are picked up or hinted at, then dropped with no explanation and are never mentioned again. Some characters who are set up to seem important are suddenly sidelined, leading me to wonder why they were ever built up at all. The book has an interesting premise. An ancient evil hiding in what seems like a picturesque landscape. But it just isn't handled well enough to make a good book.

If you are getting this for a young child, be aware that the book does contain some surprisingly violent moments, graphically described. It also uses 19th century racial slurs, so you may have to explain that to the child. I am not saying these things are negatives for the book, as they are part of the original writing and I would not want them censored out. But I just mean that this book is probably not a good choice for a very young reader.

I bought this because I love Dracula, and I wanted to read more of Stoker's work. Stoker's epistolary style does not translate well to ordinary narrative, however, and his characters come across as shallow and stereotyped. Stoker also falls victim to the racism of his times as well, assuming that the reader's horror of Africans will provide sufficient ambience to make a scene scary. Stoker comes across as an H.P. Lovecraft, but without the macabre imagination. There is really no reason to read this book.

Abridged version

I read the free Kindle edition of this book. I was shocked at how terrible it was -- the story seemed disjointed and ludicrous (even for a story about a giant white worm that can assume human form).

Involving fantasy from a Finnish writer

As I'm attending the SF Worldcon in Helsinki, I wanted to read some Finnish fantasy and science fiction. Otherwise I wouldn't have chosen to read this book - it seems aimed at young adults. However, I'm glad I did - the author is obviously talented, and I will look out for her future books.

It is loosely based on the fate of the Romanov's after the Russian revolution, but with an injection of fantasy elements, and an invented society based on Moon worship. The switches in point of view are nicely handled and the story moves along rapidly and becomes very involving.

A Crown Jewel of a Tale

A beautifully crafted, well-written tale of sisterhood and revolution. I love the layered effect of the five different points of view. The final third had my eyes glued to the page in an I-can't-go-to-sleep-until-I-know-what-happens kind of way.

I love the world building

Such a heartbreaking ending! I picked up this story because of its connection to the Romanovs, & the book is definitely a shadow of their story, but it's also wildly original & unique. I love the world building, the character development & especially the fact that the sisters are all very different from one another. The sequel comes out on my birthday & I cannot wait!

Amazing

This was just amazing. Brings history to life before your very eyes in a magical and also eerie way. There's so much life and personality to the main sisters and it just has so much gorgeous potential. I am so thrilled for the sequel because there is so much ripe promises within these pages.

Difficult to review

The narrator did an excellent job but the story felt a little like a 3.5/5.

The first hour of the book moves so fast I had to go back and start again - way too many characters and their strange names are introduced to keep track of. Even then by the end of the book I felt there were two major characters and it was unclear who they were.

Also with a young protagonist sometimes the book felt - annoying, with their young and naive perspective.

The REST of the book was really good though which means its difficult to recommend for or against. Im not sure if I regret buying it or not. Id err on the side of not - but - I strongly hope for improvements in the writing style of any sequel.

A very different book!

I loved the plot! It is one of the most unique books Ive ever read! The main character has so relatable and awesome! However, it was kind of slow. There was not as much action as I thought. The villain was also pretty easy to pick out. Overall an enjoyable and new read!

Holds your interest

Lot of plot, but a good read.

Golden's 3rd battle is a win

The third book in the shadow saga ends the original trilogy nicely if not abruptly. I always have mixed feelings when writers introduce major characters late in a series of books to the plot that the main character supposedly has known forever, but Golden made me buy into it this time. The epic battle comes to an end, or does it?

The Shadow Saga is made for Hollywood!

Golden is a golden writer. This series is one of the most exciting, fresh ideas in vampire mythos I've read in a while.

Part fantasy, part horror, all explosive and action-packed, Golden weaves a richly drawn tale full of awesome characters of good and evil.

Hollywood really needs to take a good, hard look at this one.

Actually, the 4th book following this, is the best.

His newest Menagerie Book # 1 is magnificent. Check it out.

Ancient Chinese secrets

The teen aspect of this story may be a turn off to some but do not let it. It is merely part of the vehicle that drives this story. Young love, kung Fu excellence and a dastardly metaphysical bad guy, what more could you ask for? Charles Colyott did a good job on this one. Black: Canto I of the Nephilim Codex is well worth the credit but I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

High adventure and lots of laughs smeared in blood lol

If your looking for a great break from all the BS of political and environmental gloom read this book

Set in the 1990s it will take you back to a better time filled with great music and good memories

I was completely absorbed by the story

After accidentally killing his girlfriend on an accident and spending two years in limbo, Daniel finally decides to break from everything and have a fresh start on the other side of the world. Accepting a job as a translator, he moves to an Eastern European country, where he will catch a mysterious disease which will transport him to another world.

It took me a while to get into this book and follow the three different story lines: first, we have Daniel's story in Country; second is the story line happening in the Night Country; and last, the story in the poem Daniel has to translate. We get excerpts from the poem at the beginning of chapters, and there is a duality shared with the story in the Night Country. As soon as I got a grasp about the structure of the book I couldn't stop listening.

The story is set in an European Eastern country, called Country in the book, and the city is simply the City. The city is referred to as the City of Churches, which made me think of Vilnius (Lithuania), Krakow, or Przemysl (Poland). But other references and the use of crowns made me think of the Czech Republic. The fact that everybody drinks vodka made me think of Lithuania and Poland. I know Vine took the liberty of just using Country as a name to avoid being tied to a specific geography, but I enjoyed guessing where this could be set.

I was completely absorbed by the story. I think Vine did a good job in building up the intrigue about the Night Country, and I found the characters there interesting. I had issues trying to like Kashka, and I am still puzzled about Ink. I wondered why Daniel insisted on meeting with them both since they didn't offer much to him. I guess their role is more about the Night Country, and there will be more about them in the next book. The story about the Night Country amazed me, and the details we learned just had me wanting to know more. I hope my questions will be answered in the next book.

Despite the fact that some of the characters were not very likable, I think the characters were very developed in general, especially Daniel.

I received a kindle as a gift for christmas/birthday because I have always loved to read and because I started traveling more and more. I love the amazon kindle that I have. I had an app on my old smart phone because I always wanted to read. While traveling, having my kindle helps kill time during waiting periods, especially during lay overs. I have had some lay overs lasting over 10 hours. Having a plethora of Amazon kindle books to choice from is fun when I get ready for a trip. I selected this book in the middle of a binge purchase and I am glad I did!

I enjoy sinking my teeth into a quick read of all types of genres and being able to just stick my head into a different world allows me to escape from the world and any current stress. I love both fiction and non-fiction, allow the world of fiction reads allow you explore a new place without having to go far. I can read through a 300 page book in two days, I love connecting with a story and a character. There is a great joy from completing a good book. I can read while listening to music or even watching tv. I really do not like when someone interrupts me when I read, I can get so engrossed that I do not want to pull out and entertain conversation. The worse is when people want to talk about the book you are trying to read. If you wanted to have a conversation, you would not be reading. I do not understand why people think it is find to just randomly start conversations that are not needed.

I have found that the kindle fad has started to dwindle, but it is a great innovation that I am happy to have because of that access to millions of titles and I look forward to downloading more as I plan more travels and can travel to new worlds in my head before traveling to new lands.

Five stars awesome book

I give these books 5 stars. The fantasy story that Craig holleran has going is just simply amazing. I still haven't read the sixth book yet currently just finished number five. So far Carlotta people have been captured and or died.

The fundamental message of this story is that "beauty is only skin deep". The TARDIS arrives on an unnamed planet, where they have an odd encounter with a robot, named by Vicki as a Chumbly, before being captured by abgroup oif female warriors known as the Drahvins.

The Drahvins claim that the planet will self-destruct in a few days time, and seek the assistance of the TARDIS crew in defeating another downed spacecarft of aliens, the Rills, who have managed to repair their ship. They prompt the travelklers by holding one of them hostage against the success of the mission.

While casting good-looking women as villains may have not been very copmmon in 1965, it is so old hat by now that what may have been surprises when the show was broadcast will surprise no one these days.

This is not greatly assisted by William Emms uninspiring adaptation.

Hidden Gem!

This was a very fun little read. If you love Doctor Who and enjoy the 1st Doctor and his companions you will enjoy this!

I'm not sure what the other reviewers were looking for, this is not meant to be fine literature, but FUN DOCTOR WHO! It has succeeded at this in my opinion.

I suggest reading this and then when the missing episode finally gets released you can see what it looked like on screen! The recovery of the missing episode meant that we have seen the aliens for the first time since the original broadcast, you can find screen caps online if you want to first.

Deftly executed urban fantasy

Sloan takes the reader deeper into a urban fantasy that feels fully three-dimensional. The fantastic elements all stand firm on an underpinning of background that allow easy suspension of disbelief. He portrays the magic, demons, mysticism, rituals, cliques and cabals in as 'realistic' a way as one could. Not being much of a scholar of the occult myself, I can't say if he's crafted a thoroughly believable fantasy or done an enormous amount of research into actual spiritualism, but whatever it is--it worked. I slipped with ease into the story, glued to the book while metaphorically biting my nails while I hoped Dorian found a way to save the young girl's soul.

I read the first book in this series some time ago, but the world is rich and detailed enough to where I picked right back up where I left off. Sloan adds enough reminders of previous events without overburdening with flashback. Dorian is a character reminiscent of House MD, a bit of an ass, an egoist (to a fault), but on the inside he's looking for the most 'right' thing to do.

If I had to say anything bad about this story (trying not to express this thought with too much of a spoiler) Dorian makes a decision regarding his soul which feels a bit repetitious with what happened in the first book. I am looking forward to the third in the series.

Another brilliant book by Mr. Sloan

Once more Mr. Sloan has created a page turning story filled with characters who are not only believable, they are people you grow to care about, or as the case may be - characters you grow to dislike with the same intensity. The person the story revolves around, Dorian Lake, is a curse merchant with a conscience. The author, Mr. Sloan, has crafted a story with many layers. Each turn of the page peels back another tantalizing clue as to who or what type of magical entity Dorian must deal with. The author clearly has - as Dorian says - been in 'the life' and is familiar with magical theory and practice or he has done a considerable amount of homework to familiarize himself with hermetic and esoteric schools of thought. He writes about magical practise with genuine believability.
