Addicting Serialized Fantasy Adventure

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! (and I already have!) This is the kind of storytelling experience that can get new listeners hooked on audiobooks.

What did you like best about this story?

This story was just SO addicting. The serialized format reminds me a binge-watching a Netflix tv show, because I just couldn't stop. Every episode ended on a cliff-hanger. It was so entertaining with the right mix of humor and action.

How do I chose one? Honestly I love how the first season ended (no spoilers here), because it left me dying to read season two and see what happened next.

Re-reading this story as an audiobook was an amazing experience. The narrator absolutely nailed the voice of the protagonist. He did not simply read the book out loud, but rather put on a passionate, expressive performance. I was completely engaged the entire time I was listening to this book. This is the kind of storytelling that can get new listeners hooked on the audiobook experience. I would highly recommend the audiobook version of this entertaining post-apocalyptic story. I received the audiobook version from the author. I had previously purchased a physical copy of this fantastic serial.

This was an awesome audio book experience. The narrator was fantastic. The serialized segments of the story actually worked for me. I enjoyed the overall story and really enjoyed the main character and the apocalyptic world he wakes up in. I would definitely look for more from this duo.

Great Narration, Confusing Story

This story was a bit confusing. I felt as if I should have read something else before this to fill in the missing information. Like I was reading book 2 before book 1. There were events and characters that you were expected to know about. I found myself drifting and not paying attention.

The Narrator did a great job. He is the reason I finished the story.

Just love this book (series)

I just can not get enough of this series! I have read all the books and cant wait to hear it all from the narrator! I look forward to more! Thank you again for coming up with this story line!

Yet another gem in the world of zombie books.

I have read the first 3 books in this series and have loved all of them, so I decided to listen to a narrated copy of Dark Grace to see if it would be a good experience. This is my first audio book and I loved it! The storyline was captivating and drew me in. The narrator did a fantastic job, and I could tell that she rehearsed before recording this book. I cant wait for book 4 to be recorded!

Adventureful fun!

This is a fantastically fun extension of the other books that were already written by Amanda Lash.

As I had already read all of those the occasional grammar issues didn't bother me, unlike the other reviewer.

I was mostly excited to see what twist and turns this episode would take.

The witty banter and the descriptive passages made me feel like I was part of the adventure.

I can't wait to see what adventures come next.

Change can do things unexpected

Everyone has a quest, a goal in their lives. Some happen seemingly at random. some are forced upon them. Others get into situations because they are a bit unlucky, or get pulled into them because of a really sexy pair of heels. Whatever the reason, a quest is much better where thereâs someone to share it with. Good or bad, fun or painful, sharing is much better than dealing with it on your own. But then, thatâs what friends are with you for arenât they?

One of the things that I enjoyed throughout this series, now collected into a novel, was that among the jokes, the innuendo, the laughter and more, comes moments that are very serious, very important and change the characters along the way. Thereâs a balance between the two and it helps to speed the story along. Not such that one loses comprehension, but rather that the story doesnât feel like itâs dragging along until the next crescendo.

The pacing of the action works, the moments of thought and consideration arenât just there for the sake of being so. Thereâs a point to things and thatâs always a good thing because it keeps interest in whatâs happening. The chapters connect to each other, thereâs implications for things the characters do. Itâs not so much a question of them doing good or bad, itâs more the question of why that matters.

The characters themselves change from the beginning of the series to the end. Not in a way that makes them completely different, but rather they discover things about themselves, those around them, and try to make the best of things. They adapt, they learn and along the way if some rather shady characters get whatâs coming to them, well thatâs not a bad thing is it?

There are a series of plots that close in the work and some that just come into focus. Many of these look back on the prior series of works and that continuity is good to see. That has implications for the characters and telling that story, in time, is amazing to read unfold. Many of these are relationship driven or focused on, some of them pushing the characters to the edge of themselves at times.

Good fantasy, but not for everybody

What got me to read this book was another reviewer saying that the characters were interesting but the story was generic (I'm paraphrasing). I was willing to try it anyways, I don't regret it. But I do have a couple problems with the book.

From the start, we're introduced to the city of Sacral, which disappeared a thousand years ago due to magic, and has just recently returned. And very little has changed. It's even mentioned that traders come from across the lands and no one is much interested in their wares. Imagine what Earth was like a thousand years ago. The Americas were mostly untouched by the Europeans. Guns hadn't been invented, nor computers or electronics. Public works, philosophy, science. A lot has happened in a thousand years and this bugged me for most of the book. But I admit it's a fantasy conceit and much more famous authors have gotten away with worse.

The other thing was we do get these very interesting, well developed characters. One is fairly generic but the others are pretty neat and the way they deal with things and adapt to the obstacles and troubles the plot puts in their path is really engaging. But they hardly ever meet. Between the major characters there's about three pages of them meeting (on, I think, about five separate instances). Again, this is (has been) a popular trope in fantasy, the really big story, so what can I really say about it other than it happens and I found it a little weird, but not necessarily bad.

Those two things I found off. But I really can't say anything bad about the book. It's a good length. It tells a series of stories that are more interconnected by the world they take place in and in some cases a series of events that happened over a thousand years ago. It's well written, it has neat ideas, I'd really like to see more of it and quite looking forward to the next book (which, judging by the brief glimpse at the end of this one, will introduce new characters). If you're unused to fantasy, and don't like the things I've mentioned or are particularly critical, I'd suggest avoiding it.

Great Monsters

I loved listening to this story and its monsters of the night. From the beginning of the story I was captured and just had to hear more. I really enjoyed that it doesn't follow normal popular vampire mythology and swings in its own direction. Marissa had a wonderful voice and her emotion helps make the story spooky. There were times when words were cut off or unclear, but it didn't effect understanding it is just something that bothers me when it happens (even with everyday speech).

NEED NEXT BOOK SOON, LOVE THIS SERIES

As with the previous books, this one blended action, magic and mythology extremely well, I have and will continue to recommend this book & series to anyone looking at urban fantasy, my only complaint is the books are a bit short for me, I prefer about 12 hours of audio, because I go through anything shorter in less than a day, but that is do to my ability to listen to the books without it effecting my work or anything else. in any case I look forward to the next installment, this book left a few directions the next could go and I am curious to see where the story heads next...

The Fireworks Keep on Coming!

What do you get when you combine a refreshing and inventive urban fantasy author with a talented voice actor? You get "Torment" by Nicholas Olivo, narrated by Ian McEuen. I cannot say enough good words about this audiobook series.

Olivo again delivers an interesting, action-packed plot, literally putting demi-god Vincent Corinthos, through Hell. Vincent is really put through the wringer, but also manages to gain a better understanding of the powers he inherited from his father, the mythological Janus, that allow him to manipulate time.

As always, Olivo interweaves the folklore from real places in the Boston area in a realistic way (but giving it that urban fantasy twist) that really brings to life the novel's setting. We also get the long awaited appearance of a significant person in Vincent's life, who has been mentioned but never before seen in the Caulborn series. There are tantalizing hints of a possible new Galahad, some look at alien technology, and a satisfying finale to one the series' long standing story arcs.

Narrator Ian McEuen does an outstanding job of bringing this series to life, and this audiobook is no exception. He gives each character its own voice and makes listening to the Caulborn series very enjoyable.

If you like urban fantasy, give this series a go! It's well worth the trip.

Everything about this audiobook was exceptional. Dave Duncan is a master of great stories with humourous witty characters every historical fantasy writer should aspire to create.

Love this series!!!!

Shade is really becoming a Faerie Queen. In this book she begins to realize just how powerful she is. The bond between Dylan and Shade is explored more in this book. You get to see them truly as a couple and its sweet. Don't worry there is lots of action and nail biting also! Those Ancients are up to no good!!

What? The tale is finished??

Relationships lost, relationships found, relationships weakened, relationships strengthened - what a wonderful series! And, as at a real life wedding, I had tears in my eyes at the one at the end of this series. Thank you for sharing these wonderful characters with us, Alexia. My all time favorites category has added several new books and one fantastic author to it.

I cannot wait until the History of Fire series with Benton finally gets the first book published. I wish I could add it to my wish list right now!!

I'd Recommend this Series to my Grandchildren

I have always been a lover of the fantasy genre. When I first ran across Evangeline and Ever Shade for free, I was hooked on this series. Alexia Purdy has created a wonderful series that ties the World of Fae and humans together. Throughout this entire series, each of the characters have grown, made mistakes, and learned from those mistakes. The is also true for the latest book in the series, Ever Wrath.

In Ever Wrath, we continue where the last book Ever Winter left off. Shade is still seeking to end the war in the land of Fae that also threatens to destroy the human world. Her quest to find the remaining Ancients continues, but yields unexpected results. Her relationship with Dylan grows while she still has to combat unwanted advances from others. This book, like the previous books in this series, is well written. You laugh, get angry, and cry along with the characters. You feel as if you are a part of their world.

If you have not already read any of the books in this series, please do so. You won't be disappointed. The prequel, Evangeline, and the first book, Ever Shade, are currently free. This series is perfect for the YA genre as well as older readers as well. I would highly recommend this series to my grandchildren.

Deliciously dark!!

I'm a big fan of this author and have to say that this is different than his other works. While his books are always dark, this was his darkest yet!!

So the world was sent back to the dark ages after a CME destroyed the power grid. Now, humanity is struggling to survive, not only from famine and social unrest but from the unleashing of hell on earth. Demons are possessing people and others are turning to the church for help. But the church is struggling too. A newer belief is trying to take hold and Rome has sent Exorcist Ossian McGregor to investigate. Along the way McGregor sees that evil is trying to take hold, but how can he stop it?

That is just a brief summary of what goes on in this book. There is so much more to this than what I've just said. The plot took a little while to get into and it dragged a bit in parts, but for the most part, it was entertaining, deliciously dark and gripping. It is gorey and hard to stomach at times, but it adds to the overall feel of the story. I loved the uniqueness of the plot and devoured the book!!

I loved McGregor. He has had a tough time of it and something happened that ended with him in prison and excommunicated from the church, but when the SHTF, he is called upon for his services and sent to France to check out this new church that they hear about. He is tough, brave, kind and just an all round bad ass!!

In all, this was a great read. Different than the normal post apocalyptic books, which I liked. While it won't be for everyone, I think anyone who likes a dark and, at times, gruesome read, will enjoy this.

Jake Urry was fantastic as always!! He has such a unique and distinctive voice and always reads the story well. He has a wide and varied array of voices that always make it a pleasure to listen to his work.

A rare book that dose lives up to its disclaimer

This book starts with a rather blunt disclaimer about the contents therein promising violence depravity and all sort of interesting tidbits. As the story proper started Jake Urry eased into the book with a voice that after getting used to it I couldn't see anyone else really doing the priest as much justice.
