This story is set in three different time periods but is essentially an endeavour to thwart enemies by using knowledge, skills and talents from the different times. However, that really is an over simplistic way of describing this action packed story of wizards and robots endeavouring to protect the Earth and mankind from an alien invasion . . . .

Events in all three time periods are portrayed as separate threads which become interwoven as key events and characters influence and connect. The key character is Ada Luring, the teenage daughter of Sara Luring who invented the first robot with artificial intelligence, a robot who was able to learn, adapt and so much more. A robot from a future time travels to find and protect her and a wizard from a past era also travels through time to seek Ada and her mother you just know life is never going to be simple again!

This is a magical and technological adventure with very different characters learning to work together to overcome their mutual enemies. It is a unique mix of so many science fiction and fantasy elements blended to create a fast paced dystopian world and a battle of good v evil. The writing is engaging, flowing well and keeping the reader eager to learn more. However, initially I found it somewhat confusing as I couldnât see how the disparate events related to each other and, even though Iâve now finished reading it, there are still some unanswered questions (such as where did the aliens originate and why did they attack Earth?). I did like how the different characters reacted and related to each other and especially with Ada. Overall I found it an entertaining read and recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction or fantasy stories with gadgets galore and magical powers, too!

So, I'll likely be in the minority here. I was very unhappy with this read.

The world building is lazy. Our aliens look exactly like humans, except they have gills, they're very smart, and very agile. They wear jeans. Let me say again...they wear jeans.

Our girl has a case of insta-love with an alien-boy. Okay, they're all aliens except for her. But alien-boy has zero personality. He's handsome, though (looking thoroughly human except the gills - and he looks good in - say it again - jeans).

Human-girl (aka last human alive, aka angsty teen) wants to be an officer in the military. Somehow, the fact that they all hate humans and that, eventually someone's going to find out, seems to escape her entirely. But hey, she's not that bright.

But somehow, she's the bestest leader on the face of the Earth (that once held humans) - and yes, I said 'bestest'.

So, with our non-existent world building and unimaginative aliens, we enter...drama! There's a villain! Someone might find out she's human. (Or, since she's not that bright, the girl who is worried that someone might find out she's human and kill her as the vermin they think she is - MIGHT START TELLING PEOPLE SHE'S HUMAN!. Oy.)

But...do all the people who hate her actually tell the military she's human? Or does the author give us a softball, lovey-dovey, insta-love-fabulous ending that answers absolutely nothing and makes all the drama completely pointless?

Hmmm...can you guess?

Recommended? Nope. (Because gills and freaking jeans.)

Loved it!

Very intriguing! Great YA book! I definitely recommend if you enjoy reading about witches. Two young girls runaway from home to join the academy. But there a witch out there out to them and secrets become revealed. And people of the past reveal themselves as well. Definitely recommend.

Believe it or not, I considered this book to be a real "page turner".

This was apparently intended to be a middle-school/high-school age primer on the workings of -- and problems with -- the US Constitution. The authors, a world-renowned Constitutional Law scholar and his wife, an accomplished author, describe in accessible detail the highlights of the US Constitution. Interesting background stories are liberally peppered in to make the material more relevant to the less-informed reader. However, while the book may have been targeted at those in their early teens, the issues discussed are sophisticated indeed. Fine points of the US Constitution are compared with constitutions of individual states, as well as those of other countries. We are left with the distinct impression that our Constitution was, indeed, a spectacular accomplishment. HOWEVER, it is similarly clear that some of the compromises made at the onset, as well as some of the key features, have demonstrated themselves to be problematic in many ways (and could cause serious problems in several specific circumstances which haven't yet occurred).

X-Men Meet the Victorian Era

These Vicious Masks is the first installment in co-authors Tarun Shanker, & Kelly Zekas These Vicious Masks series. The story is set in 1882 Victorian Era England where 17-year old protagonist Evelyn Wyndham has had enough of parties, and doing what her mother wants her to do. She wants to be like her friend and travel the continent, and live the life that she wants. But, when her sister Rose disappears after a night of strange happenings with only a bizarre note left behind, Evelyn travels to London against her parents wishes in an attempt to find her.

Evelyn doesn't travel alone. She instead finds herself in the company of Nicholas Kent who truly believes that he is the greatest detective in the world. Then, there is Sebastian Braddock who claims that both Evelyn and her sister Rose are of extraordinary talents thanks to something called saltation. It is also what brought Rose to the attention of the sinister villain in this story. Kent and Braddock couldn't be more unlike. Kent is more socially liked, even though his family is a royal pain, while Braddock is dark, and troubled, and has a hard time not pushing people too far.

One of the things that really stands out to me is Evelyn herself. She's feisty, she hates being put in one category or another, and she could give a good pox if anyone calls her names while searching for Rose in rather unpleasant environments for a so called Lady. Evelyn apparently has the talent of healing which makes things interesting when in search of her sister. As things start to piece themselves together, Evelyn finds that Sebastian has been right all along. It will be up to the combined efforts of Evelyn, Braddock, Kent, and Alice Gray to try and rescue Rose from the sinister villain.

I hesitate in comparing this book to the X-Men. There are those with extraordinary abilities, yes, but nothing like Wolverine, or Storm, or Cyclops, or even Professor Xavier. Characters in this story can not only heal themselves and others, but they bring about death by touch, can make people tell the truth, are able to create portals, and one can even mimic the appearance of anyone she encounters. A positive for me was the lack of a cliffhanger ending. Even though I was definitely prepared to deal with one after all that happens, it never came. Instead, the authors use the final chapter to bridge to the next installment in the series. A book that I will be reading shortly.

A fun, comedic, romantic, adventure romp through Victorian London with mutants

Well, I love Jane Austen and I love The X-Men, so you can imagine that the first tag line hooked me before this book was even released.

Good to get the gang back

A good new beginning but unfortunately the narration performance is lacking, especially when compared to the previous 9 books.

Great story shame about the narrater

I so love Derek Landys work, he is a fantastic writer and has an amazing sense of humour. Especially in the skullduggery pleasant books. The first few books brought to life by Rupert degas are amazing, a little hiccup with Brian Bowles on book 5 but later Stephen hogan put his own fantastic stamp the last few books. I found Caroline Lenins reading, just that, a reading. Unlike Degas and Hogan who preformed each book. Caroline Lennon does stellar work but in my opinion she was not the wright fit for this book. I am extremely disappointed I downloaded it. I would dearly love if they redo with Stephen Hogan or better again Rupert Degas. The book its is fantastic, but I say buy a hard copy and read it yourself because this version does not do it justice. Im sorry to be negative this is just my opinion.

Brilliant but hollow return

Brilliant story, everything I love about this world has been brought to life again.

But I deeply missed the deep rich tones of Stephen hogan, it just wasn't the same.

Caroline isn't a terrible narrator but I struggled to tell the difference between the characters.

If Stephen or a similar narrator could come back and redo this story it would be amazing

It's hard to tell the difference between the characters as she seems to just use her normal voice for a lot of them or only changes them slightly... guy or girl... they sound the same.

a great read for any age

Another great read by Wendelin Van Draanen. I am a grandmother who really enjoys the Sammy Keyes books. I was introduced to them by my grandaughter who while reading a part of one out loud, put so much character into it, I couldn't wait to read the whole book. I have since bought the whole series and can't wait for the next issue. I read them and then pass them on to my daughter and granddaughters on down the line until we all have finished them. We recommend them to all kids, and adults alike.

Another hit in one of my favorite series!

Sammy Keyes is one of my favorite series of books, right up there with Harry Potter. I started reading them in grade school, and even though I'm a high school junior now, I'm still addicted to these! I was so excited when I heard this was coming out that I went and purchased an eBook yesterday (the day it came out).

Yeah, I was just a little excited.

And for good reason-this book, the 12th out of 20 planned books, does not disappoint. Sammy Keyes is just sneaking up the fire escape at the Senior Highrise where she lives-as usual-when an unexpected old guy runs into her. Sammy finds out what scaring someone to death literally means when the guy has a heart attack right on the stairs. To add to this, Sammy's obese neighbor Mrs. Wedgewood has fallen, and oh yeah, the guy told Sammy to throw his bundles of cash into the bushes.

Well, Sammy can't just let bundles of $20 bills be hidden in some bushes. She feels terrible about "killing" the man (even though it wasn't her fault), but when there are hundreds of bucks in her hands where she previously had nothing, well, what can she do! She pockets it, intending on only doing good things-repaying her rich best friend, Marissa, for all the nice things Marissa's done for her; leaving secret gifts for her Grams and Hudson.

Marissa is having problems of her own, too. Her parents are fighting more and more, money is dwindling, and her little brother, Mikey, is uncooperative and acting like a baby. On top of that, she worries she'll never be able to land Danny Urbanski, her crush. Speaking of crushes, what will happen to Sammy and Casey?! Those two are my main reasons for reading this series--they're so cute! Things turn awkward though, when Sammy's mother unexpectedly returns for a few days to Santa Martina-but not to see Sammy. Heather & Officer (I mean, Sergeant) Borsch make a little appearance as well.

Sammy runs into deeper and bigger problems with the money as she encounters a dangerous stranger who visits Mrs. Wedgewood and starts to realize why the old guy she scared to death wanted her to throw the cash away. She decides to go undercover as an old lady as well...which is hilarious, until she's discovered.

An exciting conclusion

While this portion of the story comes to a conclusion, I look forward to a more adult setting for further adventures. I do want to point out that the editing could have used some improvement; there were a lot of grammatical errors. However, the mythology was great and I still recommend this series.

Totally awesome book!! Exciting and breathtaking!!

If you are of Nordic decent or just love stories about Odin and Thor you have to read these 5 books.

WOW. I love her books. I have all 5 of the Valkyrie Novels and love everyone. No spoiler alert, but if I was that kind of person. Well anything I could tell you about the story would only make you want to read these books for yourself. They are filled with the Nordic gods and their legends. I wish these books were on the recommended reading list in school as they would make learning, at least about the myths of the Nordic people, so much more pleasant.

Great Tale

Concluding the series is stirring in that as intriguing as the journey has been, you aren't ready for it to end. Enjoyed all of its twists, surprises, insights, dramas and characters. Great Read!
