    Critic Reviews:
"Character development is impressive...and Shan executes the transition from normalcy to wholesale terror masterfully." (Publishers Weekly)
"Shan packs in the bites, and he rips out enough entrails for even the most jaded zombie fan; the cliffhanger ending...closes on just the right note to leave the audience gnawing for more.... A series opener to sink your teeth into." (Kirkus Reviews)
"A raw and deeply observant tale of a morally questionable kid trying, and usually failing, to move beyond the ingrained racism instilled by B's father. It is a brave move by Shan to posit such a bigoted hooligan as our protagonist." (Booklist)

La migra, the immigration police, come to his classroom and pick him up for deportation to Mexico. Soon back in the United States with a "green card", Francisco struggles through adolescence, working two or three jobs a day and striving to excel at school. But he also finds time to be a typical teenager in the 1950s, an era of cool cars, dances, and Elvis.

wonderful portrayal of a migrant family
I bought *Breaking Through* without realizing that it was a sequel to *The Circuit*. Nonetheless, you aren't lost if you start with *Breaking Through* I loved this memoir because it was one of the best portrayal of a migrant family.
This memoir chronicled the life of Francisco Jimenez from the time that him and his family entered America from Mexico to his entrance into college.
The Jimenez family saved up some money and entered into Mexico illegally. They were soon caught, after a time, and deported back. However, they were able to get papers and return. Despite living in the land of freedom and opportunities, the family has to work hard in order to survive. They worked in strawberry fields, lettuce patches and cleaned buildings.
Francisco is loving school yet struggled to stay on top as he also has to work. His older brother did well in school but worked nearly as much as their often-ill father did. The mother stayed home and took care of the children. However, she often substituted in their work when needed.
*Breaking Through* is a story of a family working together. It's also a story of one finding one's own identity in America. It's also a story of one trying to achieve the American dream.
You'll laugh. You'll cry. If you don't understand the Mexican culture, you'll find yourself puzzled at some things. Coming from a Hispanic family, I found myself nodding and taking strolls in memory lane.
Overall, it's easy reading for a great book.
I love this book and didn't want it to end
I love this book and didn't want it to end. It provides an extraordinary window into the life of Mexican migrant workers that is greatly needed. Each chapter fills in another piece of a puzzle that is mostly hidden to people outside of the farmworker reality. Francisco Jimenez provides a much-needed voice that is articulate but down to earth.
    Amazing story
Everyone should be required to read this book
    Great book
Bought this book for English as Second Language class, it is a great book, if you are a person who love real life books, this is one of the best!
    Breaking Through
Breaking Through was very entertaining. It should be read by high schoolers and junior high students and provides a substantial amount of reading material.

It was a lovely time spent listening
Anna is really struggling with the loss of her mother and grandmother after they died. She needs to learn to trust others and allow herself to be loved. This is a cute story which is well developed and exciting. I wanted more uninterrupted time to spend listening.
Worthwhile and a good family listen because the story flows well and narration is exceptional.
    Wow

    loved it
it was a beautiful story that I have been wanting to listen to for ages. if it hadn't been for the movie by studio Ghibli I would have never know about this book. I loved how rich the story was and how the movie captured so many parts of the book. although the book was much better because I actually got to learn more about these characters than I expected. I definitely would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a coming of age story.
    I really love this story.
it's such a cute story, the mystery and the concept is just so great !

    Shortest car ride ever...
This book is great. I listened to the audible version as I made a 12hr trip in my car. I was riveted the entire car ride wondering what was going to happen next. I couldn't stop listening. The story itself and the writing style reminded me of the book "A Wrinkle in Time" and parts of the books concepts reminded me of Dr.Who. I really enjoyed listening to the narrator with her inflections. It definitely added to the experience. I'm going to purchase the next one in the series for my return trip. Can't wait to see what happens next...
Maybe it's a good story but I will never know
I couldn't get through a third of the story because the narrator is dreadful. Unfortunate.
    bad
I'm not sure if it was the slow story line or just the terrible narration but this was one I couldn't make it 50% thru w/o rewinding multiple times because I wasn't paying attention or had fallen asleep. I usually finish the books I download but not this one.

But when they get to Kazakhstan, it turns out the infant theyve travelled for has already been adopted, and literally within minutes are faced with having to choose from six other babies. While his parents agonize, Jaden is more interested in the toddlers. One, a little guy named Dimash, spies Jaden and barrels over to him every time he sees him. Jaden finds himself increasingly intrigued by and worried about Dimash. Already three years old and barely able to speak, Dimash will soon age out of the orphanage, and then his life will be as hopeless as Jaden feels now. For the first time in his life, Jaden actually feels something that isnt pure blinding fury, and theres no way to control it, or its power.

Evolved Publishing brings you another rare glimpse into ancient Native American Indian culture, with Spirals, the much anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed Circles, by Ruby Standing Deer.
A Holy Man, who lives in both this world and the Spirit world, waits hidden in a cave in the canyons, as a newly made woman runs toward him. She flees her would-be suitor, who wants from her more than she can give. The Holy Man and his constant companions, a colony of mice, accept the woman within the cave. She worries that he may be crazy, but given her fear of the man who desires her, maybe crazy is not so bad. In this sequel to Ruby Standing Deer's first novel, Circles, the main character of Shining Light is now grown and with family. He dreams of the woman and the Holy Man in the canyons, and knows that, after four seasons of calm and peace in the Forest of Trees, he must go to them. He seeks guidance, but the Spirits tell him only that he must rescue these two people. Yet he need not go alone. Ever Shining Light's faithful companion and Wolf Brother, White Paws senses he must follow his Human Brother. Thus, one Human, one Wolf, and their two families set out for the unknown. The adventure exceeds all of Shining Light's expectations, and he learns more about his place in this world than the Holy Peoples of his band could ever teach him.

    Such a Lovely Story!
Narration - Karen Rose Richter - This is a tough one, because she's a fabulous narrator...but, This book has a ton of characters and I could only identify a couple by their voices. I also felt like some of them sounded like children or women, even though they were adults or males. But again, with that said, I thought she was a great storyteller.
Part of the issue may also be with me, in that I have not read the first book in this series.
So...that's my first recommendation. I suppose that it's not necessarily required that you read the first book, but from other reviews I've read, you will have a better understanding of the characters (of which there are many) if you start off with the first.
As for the story? Well, as I said, Karen Rose Richter is an excellent story teller and this is a lovely story. It is filled with charm, a little humor, Native American Lore, some mystery and (did I mention) a large cast of characters and animals!
I really need to go back and get the first book!
I received this audiobook free of charge courtesy of Audiobookblast in exchange for an unbiased review
    Absolutely Amazing
Spirals is an esteemed sequel to the audiobook Circles. I love this story and what it represents. This story not only adds more depth to the characters as theyve matured, it also introduces several new and integral characters. While I thoroughly enjoyed Circles, I found even more inspiration from Spirals. This is a story for all ages and Im hoping there will be a third audiobook.
This story begins with the young girl Falling Rainbow who goes off for a few days because she doesnt want to be with the young man Night Hunter who wants to take her as a wife.

The U.S. Government wants to test the deadly power of the atomic bomb - and Sorrys island has been chosen as the test site. Members Reviews:
Excellent novel - and the saga continues in the Marshall Islands....
I thought this was an excellent book which put names and faces to the people who were and still are greatly impacted by the testing. Another reason I really love the book is that there is so little literature for our youth in Micronesia to identify with. They are able to connect much more easily and readily with this novel than, say, with all of the novels written about young people's lives in the continental U.S. The themes are applicable to any young person in terms of making decisions (and the risks involved with those choices), importance of family and one's culture, etc. As an educator, I have used this novel while working overseas as well as in Micronesia as it provides the opportunity to delve into aspects of WW2 and the testing and use of nuclear/atomic weapons (analysis, evaluation) - and situations which they may not have been aware of. Even our students on Guam were not really aware of the testing within the Micronesian islands, yet it has also affected our island of Guam (residents and ecosystem).
    Five Stars

Love can be a trouble word for some people. Crazy is also a trouble word.
    I should know.
You've never met anyone exactly like 12-year-old Sarah Nelson. While most of her friends obsess over Harry Potter, she spends her time writing letters to Atticus Finch. She collects trouble words in her diary. Her best friend is a plant. And she's never known her mother, who left when Sarah was two.
Since then, Sarah and her dad have moved from one small Texas town to another, and not one has felt like home.
Everything changes when Sarah launches an investigation into her family's Big Secret. She makes unexpected new friends and has her first real crush, and instead of a "typical boring Sarah Nelson summer", this one might just turn out to be extraordinary.
