    Publisher's Summary:
A new full-length collection of high fantasy by Dave Smeds. A lover spun from moonlight. A wife banished for carrying the child of a demon. A queen, beheaded ten years ago, whose sage counsel may still save the realm. Here are tales of swords, of magic, of romance. And of the struggle to be splendid of heart whether the opponent be within or without.
    Editorial Reviews:
Narrator James Patrick Cronin's bright-eyed performance is flexible enough to give the tales in this collection of high-fantasy stories their own unique stamp. Each story is told from the point of view of a female character who finds herself embroiled in extraordinary - and sometimes perilous - situations, and Cronin nimbly blends drama and tension with his personality-driven narration. Listeners will be enchanted by the tales of love, magic, and power in worlds where a book can foretell an entire life, a beheaded queen's head is kept alive, and a girl falls in love with a man made of moonlight.

Wonderful stories in a high fantasy setting
Wonderful stories in a high fantasy setting. but with some modern sensibilities that really strike home. Off to find what else he's written.
    Raiding the Hoard of Enchantment
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading this book. Each short-story was imaginative, engrossing, & entertaining. Can't wait to read more by this author.
Fantasy Short Stories with Strong Female Protagonists
Raiding the Hoard of Enchantment consists of seven short fantasy tales. In each story, a female protagonist develops a bond with another to accomplish an important task. These bonds are not romantic. Rather, they are based sometimes on friendship but often on mutual need and/or sacrifice and although she is usually a willing participant, sometimes the task is forced on her without her consent but, no matter the difficulty or personal cost, she does what she knows is right.
When I first got this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. I don't usually like short stories but I have to say I loved these. They are beautifully written, beautifully plotted and a real pleasure to read. But above all, I loved the heroines. They were all strong, brave, and independent women, capable of making their own choices based on what was right rather than on what was most beneficial to them.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. If, like me, you hate this new tendency in literature towards female protagonists who are abused and loving their abusers, then this is the book for you. I had never heard of author David Smeds before but I expect (and hope) to read more from him in the future.
    Well worth buying
After receiving my LibraryThing Early Review copy (in exchange for an honest review), I realized that I had already purchased some of these stories separately and enjoyed them. I'm glad to have them collected in one place. None of these stories seems formulaic. All will introduce you to vivid worlds and characters you will not easily forget.
Often the stories are told from the point of view of someone that you'd ordinarily expect to be a minor character. For example, in "A Swain of Kneaded Moonlight," the p.o.v. character is the magical princess' servant/childhood friend. In "The Page Turner," it's the niece of the man who owns the book that foretells the future.

    Publisher's Summary:
The empire that ruled the world is crumbling, and darkness is falling. Cities burn, armies pillage, and warlords struggle for domination. In the shadow of Rome's fall, the land of Britannia is divided and bleeding.
Uther Pendragon and his allies journey to the heart of the dying empire, lead great armies, and forge a fragile alliance, the last hope to preserve the fading light of civilization. Amidst the ruins of Roman power and glory, the free peoples of Britannia make their last stand against the forces of darkness.
On blood-soaked battlefields and before towered fortresses under siege, Uther and his warriors wage the final war for the future of Britannia.
Before King Arthur, before the round table, before Camelot...there was Uther Pendragon, Britannia's greatest warrior. This is his story.
    Members Reviews:
The forging of a king, a great tale of the travails anf triumphs of Uther Pendragon
Britannia is left to fend for itself as the mighty Roman empire undergoes its lenghty collapse, and in the wake of imperial iron and law begins a new age of squabbling kings, ambitious warlords and savage invaders. Meant for the cloth as the 3rd son of a king with imperial lineage, the wilful Uther is thrust into momentous destiny when his family is decimated by war in his absence. Fearsome in battle, indomitable in his unification intent, his deeds bring victory and brighter prospects for all Britons until Uther's intractable desires cast a bloodthirsty shadow on all he has achieved.
Fast paced with a diverse and colorful cast and crisp dialogs, set at a time of epic change that would yield many a medieval legend, the story makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to the next book in tge series.
Brutally frank description of that age.
Been a King Arthur fan for a long time. Always get a chuckle out of the "romance" of the Middle Ages, chivalry, plate arms and armor, knights jousting...baloney! If there was an "Arthur" somewhere, it was probably one or two hundred years after the Romans left. He might have been the son of one of the Roman-descended families left (or voluntarily stayed ) behind. (Kipling wrote a poem/ballad about a Roman veteran asking to be left behind with his family instead of returning to Rome),This is more about Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father and from an offshoot of the Imperial Roman family that stayed behind. We have Merlin,of course, other characters, but this is around 500 - 600 AD, life was simple and brutal. honor was variable, life cheap, agreements were sometimes "changed" without notice. Lots of plotting, combat, back-stabbing, the Britons beset on all sides, with Uther trying to form a united Britain to defend against the other ethnic groups that were raiding and trying to invade. Had a great time reading it. Would like to see the saga continued.
    Plenty of Action
I liked the story and it will be interesting how far the next story will take you that the king didn't heed Merlin he paid a very high price co no I
    Brilliantly done!!
Wow, one of the best books I've ever read on the Uther and resulting Arthurian legends while being brilliantly told. It starts with a bang and the pace continues onward from there - intrigue, treachery and battles. Once aspect I liked the most is only mentioning the widely know `facts' as background but building this telling around lesser known areas.

    Interesting controversy.
In Caithe, magic is considered to be a gift from the devil, that should be rejected by giving away your life, when the first signs of 'magic madness' start showing. However, the same magic gift is considered a blessing, when used by Caithe's king. Things get even more problematic, when Athaya, the king's daughter starts also showing the signs of the magic.
The book in my opinion is quite interesting, keeping your interest going to the last line. It is the first book of four, with "Mission of Magic", "Sage of Sare" and "The Wizard King" being the three sequels.
The 4 books being out of print, only used book stores might carry old copies, since, so far I haven't heard of any planned reprints.
Interesting concept and gripping Kept my interest
I came to this series in a strange way- I collect Illustration art and ended up with one of the cover paintings. As such I decided to read the book . Growing up in the 1950's when sci-fi novels were usually 160-200 pages I find a lot fo the fantasy and sci-fi today to be 150 pages novels padded out into series- not this one . The initial concept that magic (or most likely psi-powers) is a genetic trait that appears in young adulthood and can lead to madness unless trained is a neat one. Set in a culture where the majority of ordianry people do not have those traits - fear the magicians and persecute them makes for a great plot. And Smith keeps the plot boiling- held my interest with no padding for all 4 books - a good read overall!
    the begining
The story starts in a mevieval world. In a land called Caithe. It was about twenty years after a nearly two centuries of civil war. Peace have been in the kingdom. So to speak of. A king found away joint them together. Their was pockets of destruction. Because. Of madness of magic appearing. Their history claims wizard or Lorngeld as they are known. Caused the mass destruction for over two centuries. A head-strong princess who is sort of tomboy. Is sent of to a nearby kingdom. To create of peace between the two lands. When she arrived, she recover a terrible secret. That was hidden from her people. And found out she was one of thoses people. She taught to fear. And the real reason. Why the civil war started. And why the probems still continuted.
    Read this book!
I think this book had a great plot. In the kingdom of Caithe, magic is thought to be an evil gift from the devil. Unfortunately, the king's daughter has it! The king also has it. His however is artificial and therefore tolerated. When the princess' magic is discovered and it backfires she is to be killed. So she runs to a nearby kingdom that embraces magic. Some unexpected turns are taken and this book leaves you hanging.

That is, until the young mage Ulin Majere and his traveling companion are summoned there to identify a murder victim. They quickly discover there is more to the rough seaport than just one dead body, including cagey thieves, failing magic, the Knights of Neraka, and a very greedy, very deadly red dragon.
    Members Reviews:
    It Takes a Thief...
It's been a long time since I've read a DragonLance novel. Probably as the result of overdosing on Weis and Hickman's books. Recently I felt a yen to revisit the world of dragons and kenders and picked up Mary Herbert's "Dragon's Bluff." I'm not sure why I decided to read the third book in a new series, but it turns out to have been a fortuitous choice.
This story starts out with Ulin Majere and his betrothed, Lucy, living in Solace after the destruction of the Academy of Sorcery. With magic failing both are making the transition to mundane lives. Suddenly, their routines are upset when a dwarf appears from far away Flotsam and asks Lucy to journey to that town to identify a corpse - one suspected to be the body of her father, Kethril Torkay. Lucy hasn't seen her father in 10 years and, wants to resolve her ambivalent feelings about the man who deserted her and her mother. She also feels a need to prove herself to Ulin, who is a descendant of the famous Majeres. When the dwarf offers 25% of her father's estate, the temptation proves to great and Lucy and Ulin set off on a hair-raising journey by boat and caravan.
Once arrived in Flotsam, Lucy finds that she hadn't quite been presented with all the facts. The corpse is not Kethril, and it turns out that his 'estate' consists of the stolen treasury of Flotsam. That treasury is desperately needed to pay the town's taxes to the fierce red dragon Fyremantle and his horrific mistress Malystryx. Far from being able to pay Lucy, Flotsam is on the verge of destruction and desperately needs help. On the strength of having magically converted several potatoes into firebombs and thus saving a caravan Lucy is offered the job of sheriff. Lucy and Challis the dwarf attempt to organize the town while Ulin, with the help of Notwen the gnome attempt to track down her errant father and Flotsam's missing taxes. Of course, nothing ever works quite according to plan and the fate of Flotsam is not decided until the last minute.
"Dragon's Bluff" turns out to be a charming story full of suspense and surprises. I am used to heavier fare from the DragonLance series and found myself being happily entertained by the many plot twists and the fascinating residents of one of Krynn's more obscure locations. This is by and large an upbeat story, despite being set in a land ruled by vicious and destructive dragons. It is a grim place to be, but the denizen's of Flotsam are determined to survive. Mary Herbert writes for pure entertainment and there is much to enjoy here.

Ray Crandall has just graduated from high school, and is at loose ends over a sticky, Chicago summer. He's been targeted by street gangs for forced membership or worse, if he refuses. His grandmother sends him to a meeting of her favorite charity, intending to get him involved with a safe peer group. He's not at all certain he wants to become a member of something called the Fairy Godmothers Union. The Union pairs him up with a senior fairy godmother, Rose Feinstein, who teaches him about magic and responsibility. Ray finds he has a talent for making wishes come true, and even enjoys the job. There are perks called brownie points one earns for granting a wish, little bits of magic for personal use.
The Fairy Godmothers Union is being targeted by a rival organization, the Demons, Djinni and Efreets Guild, headed by their Grand Master, Albert Froister. The Djinni want the store of brownie points commanded by the FGU, since the DDEG has a different charter. They've enlisted help, the very street gangs who have targeted Ray. He finds himself in the middle of a new kind of turf war, with magic and the children of Chicago as the prize.
    Members Reviews:
    Silly, feel-good story
I'll admit, I'm a sucker for a good, strong good-vs-evil story. This is a great book with a fun, light writing style and a new twist on the old three-wishes genre. An easy, fun read.
    Miracles for Children
The Magic Touch (1996) is the first Fantasy novel in the Fairy Godmother's Union series. It is set within the current era in a Chicago much like our own.
In this novel, Raymond E. Crandall, Jr,, is a eighteen year old Black man with an insistent grandmother. Ray has recently graduated from high school and has a job with the city parks district.
Eustatia Green is Ray's grandmother. She has been a fairy godmother for forty years.
Rose Feinstein is a senior Godmother. She is a friend of Eustatia.
George Aldeanueva is the recording secretary at the local FGU.
Hakeem is a boy who has known Ray since they were infants. Hakeem is smarter that Ray and makes better grades.
In this story, Ray attends a FGU local meeting. He almost leaves, but is restrained by the man sitting next to him. When all the attendees rise to sing the union song, Ray really wants to get out. He had thought singing had been left behind with high school.
Then he has to stand as a probationary member of the union. Then he discovers that the woman who has been pooking him in the kidneys is his mentor. He finds that she knows his grandmother and had initiated his membership in the union.
Rose takes him out for his first tour of the neighborhood. They detect negative emotions from a girl. Rose walks through a wall and takes Ray with her.
They find the girls in a bedroom with four bunk beds. The girl believes that she is not getting any attention from her father. She also believes that her stepmother is not treating her fairly.
Rose learns that the girl likes to roller skate. Her stepbrother had stolen her skates. So Rose converts two rotten cabbages into beautiful skates. The she changes the clothes into a very pretty garb.
Ray gets to handle the next morose child. He is turning nine the next day, but his father is on a job in Argentina. He has just called to say that he can't get away for the party. Ray works up the magic to change the mind of the boss.

An all-new adventure of the Cliff's End Castle Guard!
Humans and elves, dwarves and gnomes, wizards and warriors all live and do business in the thriving, overcrowded port city of Cliff's End, to say nothing of the tourists and travelers who arrive by land and sea, passing through the metropolis on matters of business or pleasure - or on quests. The hard-working, under-appreciated officers of the Cliff's End Castle Guard work day and night to maintain law and order as best they can.
A new drug called Bliss is sweeping across the slums of Goblin Precinct. It makes people feel better - but if they take too much, they overdose and die. It doesn't truly become a concern for the Castle Guard until one of the overdoses turns out to be a former elf lord who is wanted for war crimes.
The Captain of the Guard must put his best detectives, the half-elf Danthres Tresyllione and the ex-soldier Torin ban Wyvald, on the case to find out what happened to the elf. But when the magical examiner discovers the truth behind Bliss, it becomes a firestorm of controversy that brings the Brotherhood of Wizards into the case - and that never ends well....

    Members Reviews:
    Another great book!
I love this series. I will buy whatever he writes in this series. the main characters are cops in a medieval type world. there are good ones and bad ones. DeCandido writes with a wry sense of humor that I love.
    Ends on a cliffhanger!
Well, sort of a cliffhanger, at least. They just wrapped things up and BAM! A dooming pronouncement and then, "To be continued!"
The story, of a drug gone rampant in Cliff's End, holds together well, and the characters are quite real, again. There are unexpected twists, along with expected difficulties and problems seeming unsurmountable. There's triumph and heartache here for the characters and the reader.
Quite enjoyable - so glad the series has continued!
I was a big fan of the initial entry in this series,Dragon Precinct, and when, years later, it continued withUnicorn PrecinctI was very happy. Like the two previous books,Goblin Precinct (Dragon Precinct)melds fantasy elements with those of a police procedural and does a great job at it. (The ME, in this case, being the Magical Examiner, etc) I'm not much of a writer so I will simply say this: I've very much enjoyed every book in this series and look forward to many more.
    next?
This was wonderful!! The only drawback is the wait for the next book. It has been a year since this book was published and I would really love to know if there is anyone out there who knows when the next one will be available.
More Danthres and Torin! And even the other people!
If you love Cliff's End, then I don't need to sell this book to you, since it's more and even better of what's come before .All the usual suspects come out, and even more as we get closer looks at the lord and lady of this demense. Keith writes proper sequels, because he remembers everything that came before, and is dedicated not only calling back to it, but building on it. If I have one quibble, it's that he ends on a cliffhanger...

Magic is back, warts and all
In this second book of magic rising, unicorns have returned scattering magic across the land, with wizards now scrambling to master its spells. Readers will be well served to have read the first book as the earlier premise of how evil men develop evil means for their own purposes is deeper than the more straightforward quest in this story of our allergic-to-magic hero struggling to regain his former glory. To be fair, the well-developed empathetic characters all retain their courage and purpose from the first story and I enjoyed meeting them again. At times, I found myself pulled from the kindle page by typing errors that better copy-editing would have caught. Still, I enjoyed the read enough to recommend it for lovers of fantasy.
    Well developed and complex!
The characters are well developed and complex. Story is intriging.
realistic unicorns in a realistic fantasy world
This historical fantasy novel is second in the King's Wolf series and it's a good, powerful story. I love the character of Reandn; he's such a real "guy" and it's fun when he growls at people he doesn't like. The concept of a character allergic to magic is one I've not seen before, and watching the author develop this fascinates me. My only gripe story-wise is I'd love to see the unicorns carry a bigger role.
So why four stars and not five? This book needs a proofreader. There are sufficient errors to stop me every few Kindle screens, and the author is too professional for that. Should the book be updated, I'll revisit this review.
    This is a Great book!
I loved her trilogy Dun Ladyâs Jess and this series is even better! This, the second in the series, is even better than the first one-Touched By Magic. I couldnât put it down. Itâs really fast paced and not at all predictable. If you like Mercedes Lackey or Anne McCaffrey, youâre gonna Love the Magic Rising series by Doranna Durgin. I hope there are more on the way!

Such a fun read! Characters were well developed and the story moved along so interest was always kept. This book has inspired me to read more of her titles.
