    A rushed ending
What about Ellen Archers performance did you like?
Her range of voices is amazing and second to none! You never guess as to who is speaking as all of her voices are so distinct. Her reading of the story pulls you in and you can't help but to finish the book even if the story is not all that interesting.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No
    Any additional comments?
This book seems rushed and almost seems like she has to finish up some loose ends and only has 2 chapters left to do it. There is not the full character development thy she was able to do in the first book. A little disappointing and some story lines were left unfinished

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
Mazarkis William's debut novel, The Emperor's Knife, was praised for its exotic settings, gripping intrigue, and vivid, full-blooded characters. Now Williams returns to the sumptuous palaces and treacherous back alleys of the Cerani Empire, where intrigue, passion, and dangerous magic threaten the very soul of a newly-crowned emperor. After spending most of his life in captivity and solitude, Sarmin now sits upon the Petal Throne of Cerana. But his reign is an uneasy one.
Ambitious generals and restless soldiers want war at any cost. An insidious foreign religion stirs fear among the people and the court. And the emperor's own heart is torn between two very different women: Mesema, a Windreader princess of the northern plains, and Grada, a lowborn untouchable with whom Sarmin shares a unique bond.
A natural-born mage, Sarmin also carries within him a throng of bodiless spirits whose conflicting memories and desires force him to wage a private battle for his sanity. In times past, a royal assassin known as the Emperor's Knife served as the keen edge of justice, defending the throne from any and all menaces, but the last Knife has perished and his successor has yet to be named. For his own safety, and that of the empire, Sarmin must choose his own loyal death-dealerbut upon whom can be he bestow the bloody burden of the Knife-Sworn?

    Quality writing helps
Williams is not a perfect fantasy novelist. But the world and atmosphere he creates is original, and he can write adult characters with depth. He can describe detail. He understands story structure. A lot of fantasy fans decide to write, but not enough writers are fantasy fans. Williams fits in the latter group, which makes him worth reading.
LOVED it! Can't wait for the next book
I read 'The Emperor's Knife' (first book in this trilogy) last week. If you have read my review, you probably noticed that although some concepts and ideas were very original, when you calculate all the flaws the book was just an average read to me.
So I tentatively started reading 'Knife Sworn'. After all this book would be a deal-breaker to me, it will decide if I will continue to read this series or give up.
I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the 'Knife Sworn'. It's surprising to see how much Mazarkis Williams's style matured and improved in a year. While I was reading, I felt like he read my review and worked on all the things that really bothered me in 'The Emperor's Knife'. Of course that is not possible, except if he does not own a time traveling machine. :)
All the good things from the first book are still here in 'Knife Sworn': character driven story and show don't tell principle of writing. But switches between different points of view are not so sudden anymore. There is less tension because of chapter per character concept, but I feel it was worth it, because the story flow feels much smoother now.
Whose point of view we now have, since half of them were killed in the first book?
Sarmin is the main storyteller of course. He is now the emperor and he tries to applies all those ideals of peace to his country. To spice up the things and give us some different perspectives and views of events, we also have Grada, Nessaket and Rushes (a servant girl).
You all for sure remember Grada.

    WHODUNIT? An Audio Conspiracy!
A dark night in the city. Uncaring. Unforgiving. Unrelenting. A glaring street light washes down on the sidewalk, where a white chalk outline marks an audiobook's very last moments of life. Beside it, the weapons that laid it's brief life to rest: An author's pen, still wet with ink, and a battered steel microphone, unplugged after the murder.
In this case, both the author and the narrator conspired against the audiobook. Poorly written, and horribly narrated. There are no excuses for this audiobook. NONE.
    MURDER, they wrote.
Authors and narrators, avoid this tragedy. Listeners, please move along. There's NOTHING to see here.
    Or listen.
    Slow start, Good Story.
I won Darkin a while back in some contest on Facebook. I am not even sure which one it was, or why I was in it. I just got an email from some stranger saying I had won this book. I did not even know what genre the book was at that time. I will have to go back and find the email and thank them now though.
Back then I started to listen to it, but the opening to this book is slow, the language is a bit odd, and the narrator's accent meant I had to listen extra carefully as he pronounces certain words in a way I am not used to hearing. Well I gave up on it and set it aside.
Just recently I came across this again and decided to give it another go. I am glad I did. The story was a joy to listen to once I got used the manner in which it is told.
If you like epic fantasy, this is would be a good option to check out. The only complaint I have is that the ending of the book makes it feel like it is only 1/2 a book, instead of a part 1 of 2. Without giving away any spoilers, I will just say that if the last 1-2 minutes were done differently it could have still hooked you for book two and felt more like a whole book.
I have already purchased book two, I did that long before I reached the end but I have not started it yet. I am concerned about the talk of aliens, but I will reserve judgement until I see how it is handled.
    Overall definitely a worthy listen!

What a marvelous addition to this series! Not only has Irene Radford has gone to a great deal of historical research to continue this story but she has also written highly believable and memorable characters. This is a series to read and re-read many times. She deals well with the notions of a spiritual and mystic heritage set in an historic background, weaving in the gender role of the time, believably setting strong female characters into a time in history when women were seen as property.
As an amateur historian and an avid reader, I can't recommend this series and this book highly enough.
The Guardian Delivers on the Promise!
This is the final and fourth of the "Guardian" series by Irene Radford. The story is set in the time of Queen Elizabeth I and the descendants of Merlin, Hal & Deirdre, continually embark on spy missions to save the Queen and England. The forces of Chaos are always threatening to destroy what Elizabeth has built. These forces come in the forms of werewolves lead by an magical madman known as "El Lobo." He seeks to put Mary Queen of Scots on the throne in Elizabeth's place only be the power behind the throne and make her a puppet queen.
The constant exciting missions fraught with magic and sorcery will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is very exciting reading that keeps you wondering will evil or good prevail.
    Excellent
I loved reading this book, and all of the others in this series. They are definitely keepers for my personal library.
Book Good if You Like Dark Fantasy
This is a book set in the perilous Elizabethan time. Donovan Griffin is heir to the house established by Merlin. His niece Dee and son Hal are two very powerful mages, as he is. These are the people that stand against chaos. Betsy, another daughter of Donovan, and the werewolves of Spain, headed by The Master, are on the side of chaos. Time is running out for those trying to stop chaos from reigning. Hal and Dee go to Paris to try to stop destruction there. Donovan can't pursue them, as he is forbidden to leave England. The Master makes his major move against Hal and Dee in Paris. With The Master dogging their heels, will Dee and Hal be able to make peace return to the lands they have sworn to guard? I loved the plot. I just thought this book, so far into the series, was a bit write by number. It was as if the author had run out of ideas in some places, so had pulled old ideas from her other books. In other places, it was very exciting.

Would you consider the audio edition of Deathwind of Vedun to be better than the print version?
The audio edition allows the listener to experience the long lost art of storytelling. The audio edition allows the listener to tap into a different part of the human brain that stimulates multiple senses; making the experience more fulfilling than is had from simply reading the same story. I read this book originally 30 years ago. I loved it then and have become thrilled by the opportunity to read it again via the audio medium. I am a Martial Arts Master of 30 years. This book has particular appeal to me. I give it 5 stars because it is a Masterpiece encompassing such an expanse of characters, plots, story lines, philosophies and more. This book is a treasure that will benefit any reader by multiple readings. It sits in the company of Lord of the Rings, Don Quixote, and The Art of War. I interpret Gonji as Miyamoto Musashi, author of The Book of Five Rings. If a novel had been written of his life as a fiction story...I believe Gonji would hit the mark as well as could be done.

Philippa Ballatines dizzying fantasy tapestry, the first in her Shifted World series, is brought vividly to life by the talented Caitlin Greer, whos versatile performance masterfully glides between the multiple perspectives on display, from heroine Talyn the Dark and her unrelenting quest to redeem the Vaerli, her once-proud race, to the tale-spinning Finn, the fox who tells stories of unfathomable cruelty and genocide that draw the ire of the treacherous Casiah, the oppressor that drives this kaleidoscopic, wonderfully realized narrative of sword and sorcery.
