The Only Thing Wrong...

The only thing wrong with this book is the 3rd book in the series (Serpent Rising) isn't written yet. My review of book 1 tells you what I think of the series and it hasn't changed one bit. This series is fantastic. If you like Magic, Shifters, Trolls and other creatures with a Lord of the Rings & Game of Thrones type series with plenty of adventure...it's here. There is a little romantic angst. So far, no X rated stuff so it's good for all ages.

My husband & I normally have long discussions about everything under the sun, HOWEVER, since I started listening to this series...no discussions, no talk, no interruptions. The series is that good. As I said in the first review, Goodreads has the series at a solid 4 stars. That means many people (like me) gave it 5 stars while a few gave it a little less so that the average is 4. I was surprised that a few people rated it with a 1. I guess it just wasn't what they were looking for or were intimidated with the length of the book. I think that 4 is a pretty good rating overall. I hated when the book ended & am waiting with eager anticipation for book 3 to appear (Serpent Rising) in audiobook format. I only hope it is as long & detailed as the first two books. It would be hard to get any better. I can't wait to continue the journey that Finn takes with Princess Lorelei and am eager to find out what happened to Brendolowyn and the rest of the gang.

Better than Book 1!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vilnjar. He's most balanced and well-rounded. He still makes mistakes, but he doesn't get as caught up on rights, wrongs, slights, and wants as some of the other characters do.

Have you listened to any of Veronica Gigueres other performances before? How does this one compare?

Veronica is consistent and always a joy to listen to. She can make sad words tug at your heartstrings. She really brings things alive!

Any additional comments?

Sorrow's Peak picks up right where Edgelanders left off, so it's a pleasant, pretty much nonexistent segue into the continuing story. I was treated immediately to more of the character I really want to know more about, Trystay, but it was brief.

A world bigger than any one character

If you've read the first two books, this one doesn't disappoint. Shader and his compatriots must take the fight to the Technocrat and his evil experiments on his home ground, along the way meeting and making strange alliances with dwarves, Elves and arrogant politicians as likely to kill them as help. Most impressive are the loose threads that demand to be played out in other books. I've got quite a bit of reading to do.

Exciting series

First one was ok, 2nd was better 3rd was great. Unfortunately Mr. Prior is continuing the story line with another trilogy.

I was unable to put it down.

DP Prior is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. I have been a Science fiction and fantasy reader discovering Token in my youth. I would place these stories easily on par.

Complicated plot, full of surprises and action. Magic and tech combined with mysticism. Detailed characters with colorful personalities. Definitely a good read.

I've greatly enjoyed Tarr's other work

I've greatly enjoyed Tarr's other work, and this book features her trademark, gorgeous lyricism of prose. It's slow to open, but rewarding once you get past the set-up. A book heavy on politics, religion, mysticism, and myth; also contains occasional visits from empathic sabertooth cats, which cannot help but please. Very satisfying.

Fair warning, though: lots of people die in this book. Be prepared!

The Realms of Arydd are ruled in cooperation between King Rasaad and the Dragon High Council of Three. The go-between and stave mentor, Galddor, is hard taxed in this story by dealing with wayward pupils bent on creating chaos and exacting revenge. Elves, goblins, mountain dragons, sea dragons...plenty going on and all the sidelines are used in telling this tale.

Wendy Anne Darlings voice is delightful to listen to as she narrates the story. This work is a great escape and Im giving it five stars in this version. Well done.

AMAZING!!

This book itself is a great read, the details are endless. When I heard this book being read Wendy Darling does a fantastic job and hopes she continues with the series! The author really keeps your attention and keeps you wanting to keep reading!

narration wrecks this story!

this was serious work to finish

In its audible form, with this narrator not on your life. but as a stand alone work to read sure.

How could the performance have been better?

the narrator is just bad! From mispronunciations to just bland terrible cadence that puts you to sleep the only time it is redeemed is if there is a dialogue then you can stay awake because you are so irritated about bad accents, and just WRONG pronunciations.

I am very sorry for the author because the editor did him a serious disservice by publishing this book under this narration. It was just so hard to get past it to the actual book. I think that the plot was imaginative and would have been captivating if I had been able to read it. In fact the fact that I did continue to push on to the end is a good test of the fact that its a good plot with good characters and would be a good read. I really wanted to stop sooooooo many times!!!!! I will get the other books from the library or ebook. I think this book and series will go far. I do think that the attempts at sexual intimacy were very forced and just put in for maybe the teen sale value????? they could easily be left out and not hurt the book at all. It's a great book without being embarrassed that the author is trying to force this in. I think it would raise it a large notch without it.

entertaining and the storyline was good. Of course I did not want the main character Aaron to Die. I wanted him to spend more time with his son but all in all I enjoyed the book.

A different culture revealed

I had very little knowledge of East Indian culture and mythology. Thoroughly delightful. Nice and naughty in the right places.

A Hindu Fantasy

THE WILLING SPIRIT by Piers Anthony and Alfred Tella is a very refreshing novel. Written mostly by Tella with only a small involvement by Anthony this is a tale straight out of Hindu mythology. Two spirits, one female and pulchritudinous and the other male, crude and violent, form a wager as to the effectiveness of their methods. They will each have seven chances to cause a chosen mortal's seduction or destruction. The target is a young Brahmin who has decided to take a journey of discovery.

During the Brahmin's travels he becomes involved with nobles, the Rajah, powerful religious figures and many other interesting and colorful people. Needless to say he is still alive at the end when he returns to his home village.

I do not pretend to be an expert on Hindu mythology and beliefs but the story seemed consistent and well researched. The only flaw I found involved a pair of conjoined twins who were not identical (while possibly lifted from some Hindu tale it is scientifically impossible). With the usual assortment of Arthurian and Medieval European fantasies stocking the shelves THE WILLING SPIRIT bings the same fresh approach that BRIDGE OF BIRDS did last decade. While I hope I don't have to wait another decade for something similar, this one is well worth seeking out.

A novel novel

In this modern world of computers and skyscrapers it's always nice to be able to escape into the realm of fantasy. This little sojurn takes the reader to the India of the past where a young Brahmin, Hari, goes out into the world to learn of life only to become a pawn in a game of the Gods.
