Great book!!!

Another fantastic book by Ann Hunter!!!

As said in the the synopsisâ.this is a retelling of The Swan Princess and what a retelling it is!!! It is also the love story of Xander and Aowyn (briefly told in her first book of the series: The Subtle Beauty).

I loved that again, Celtic lore was woven in the story. If I havenât mentioned before, I love anything Celtic. This obsession started when I was in my teens and I havenât lost my love for it over the years.

I loved Aowynâs devotion to her brothers andand to her motherâs memory.

Would I read it again? Yes

Would I reccomend it to family and friends? Yes

Age range? Elementary school (4th grade) on up.

This was definitely NOT like the cartoon movie my daughter watched in the 90's.

This was definitely NOT like the cartoon movie my daughter watched in the 90's. This princess did not turn into a swan, but her 6 brothers did, seemed kind of odd referring to her as the swan princess. I don't know for sure, but I think this was meant as a Y/A book, though I don't think it would be good for the younger ages of Y/A.

The whole story was just too sad, between the deaths of her Mother & of 4 of the 6 brothers, the strange romance, the emotional abuse on Xander by his father & brother, over all made this just too sad for my taste. I don't enjoy reading stuff like that. I also didn't relate to the names of all the characters, though they may be from the Celtic origins of the story, they were just to confusing & most were too similar sounding to follow, I kept getting confused of who was who. There were quite a few incomplete ideas or gaps in the story that left this reader puzzled of intent or what happened or having to backtrack to see if I missed something. Like who/what was Sylas Mortas? He could have been any kind of creature, but I wanted to know what, to help me understand where the story was going with him. What was the bargain that Aowynn made with him? I was very confused over that bargain, took me a ways in to figure out her silence meant no speaking. Or who/what was Crwys? How did she inhabit the body of Ciatlllait? Were they separate identities? & what did some of the pharses translate too, like "Go dtachta an diabhal thú"? I don't know if that's Celtic/Gaelic or whatever, but I need a translation in order to appreciate it in a book written in English. The overall flow was very slow & choppy, I almost put the book down. The characters aren't super likable, the majority of the brothers were not likable in my opinion. Princess Aowyn was ok, not the type of heroine I would have thought. Xander, just seemed odd until near the end.

Narration takes away from the story

This story might be good, but the narration is probably the worst I have heard on audible. There are about twenty words that you hear mispronounced over and over in this book. The narrator also gives little feeling and really bad voice changes.

The book's plot was alright. I actually like some of the magic system. Many times the dialogue seemed too formal or bad, but that could also be because of the narration. I would recommend you read the actual book or wait till a better narrator to read this book.

It's a good story.

There's action in this story. Betrayal, too. I was into the fighting. Feeling bad for those who died. Angry that they should have killed the traitor. Now, he's going to be like one of those scary horror movies - when the bad guy is baaaack when they're not expecting him.

Intriguing

I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Just hope that certain questions get answered by the end

It's been too long since I visited Tellest. The book was well written, the characters well developed. The storyline evolved quickly and captivated me. If you like fantasy I would recommend this book. I own both the Kindle & Audible editions so I read along as the book was read to me. The narration was excellent and added to the enjoyability of the book. I look forward to the next book.

I requested this because I like this narrator, she is funny, and I think she is very talented...but this fell flat in so many areas...the world building was pretty good...but the story jumps around a lot and there isn't enough to it to justify all the jumping around in my opinion...YMMV! Narrator is good though!!!

Fresh Blend of Scifi and Myth

Star Borne is an interesting mix of starships and ancient pagan origins. I will fully admit my knowledge of old Irish myth is scant at best, but some of the terms and names sounded familiar.

The story itself is entertaining and the world building was fantastic. While it may be my inexperience with this type of genre, the slightly detached narrative reminded several times of "Til We Have Faces." While I didn't bond with any of the individual characters because of this, I think it's a fitting way to tell an alternative myth. The terrible, the violent and the beautiful were all told in a fairly impassive tone.

I found Elan O'Connor to be an enjoyable reader, her accent fit well with the setting. If you love myth and scifi, you'll want to consider Star Borne. If you only like one or the other, you may still want to give it a shot, I think it has enough of both genres to keep any reader/listener's attention.

Sci-fi WAR Ugh!

I was lucky to win the audible version of this book. Luckily the Kindle version was and is free so I could do immersion reading. And the voice of Elan O'Connor, narrator kept me listening beyond the boring part.

I love sci-fi. I'm currently reading The Martian.

The relationship of father and son given new wings

What did you love best about Icarus and the Wing Builder?

The narration is masterful. The author has a terrific "radio voice". It enlightened me about many aspects of ancient Greek life, customs and relationships. While the flight plays a central role, it is not the central subject of the book. It explores the depths of the relationship between Daedalus, two Kings, a courtesan, and of course, his son Icarus. How far are you willing to go to secure your child's happiness? How much are you willing to sacrifice? Daedalus shows us over and over, how to live a meaningful life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Icarus and the Wing Builder?

The voyage on the ship and how Daedalus's relationship begins to develop with his son, and the discovery of his deep deception and consequent oath. The vivid descriptions of a world long gone.

Which scene was your favorite?

The trust of Daedalus of his invention and the courage to take the leap into the void, towards flight and the twist at the end.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Soaring love story of the relationship between a devoted father and his adventurous son.

This book was hard to put down because of the great narration, the engaging central characters and the voyage of discovery into a distant past.

An Outstanding Audio Experience

What did you love best about Icarus and the Wing Builder?

Author Robert Case narrates a timeless tale that is as relevant today as it was 4,000 years ago. It is mythology, but with a modern twist. Icarus and the Wing Builder has a subtext about mans relationship to technology as well as his relationship to the Gods and with himself. Its rare for an author to have such a rich voice. It is worth getting the audio version just to listen to Robs melodious baritone.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Icarus and the Wing Builder?

Maybe its just me, but many of the descriptions of psychological motivations of the characters, have really stuck.

Which scene was your favorite?

Reading about Daedalus' problems in court was a favorite.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As a father, the recounting of Daedalus' grief over the loss of his son was particularly moving

Fast-paced, exciting fantasy!

I read this book on a recommendation from a friend. I devour about two books per month normally, and always try to find a good fantasy series so that I do not run out of books to read.

The Tasburai series is great, I wish there were more books in it, it is the kind of fantasy that I prefer, with believable, "normal" personas and borrows just the right amount of types of names and people we know from the "real" world.

The Tasburai order reminds me of the shaolin monks in a way, beging a mysterious order and the Tasburai themselves showing great martial prowess.

I also think that the author spends just the right amount of time describing the world in which the story is set, some fantasy authors spend so much time describing and detailing the world that the story loses momentum. This never happens in Khan's books, the pace is quite high, and I also like the fact that the narrative only changes a few times, so that you get to find out what will happen to a certain character or part of the story rather than always being left with a cliff-hanger.

Thoroughly enjoyed this read and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new series to dig in to!

Excellent read

The tale brings you to a different world but with everyday topics such as bravery, betrayal and friendship. I enjoyed reading this book, can't wait for the sequel.

Fantasy, action and substance all rolled in to one.

While this book is probably aimed at the teenage market, I, being far from my teenage years, thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the sequel. I was particularly pleased to see two strong female lead characters - an important factor I believe for books aimed at the young adult market. In general I enjoyed the development of the characters and the way in which Khan showed us both the the strengths of the main characters as well as their flaws.

I was interested in the use of words, places and ideals throughout the story and wondered if they referenced historical ideology & etymology, which in turn added another layer of interest to the book for me.

Nath Dragon betrayer may have hope

After Nath woke fom the 25 year hibernation his quest to save Dragons turned into one to slay them. The red flags were there from the begining, he killed Lizard men and stabbed the Iron Dragon in the mouth. I know he was being attacked but I don't hurt my Iguanas if they bite me in the face. in that regards I'm proud that Nath didn't kill the small Dragon that bit his arm. There is still hope in that. only reason being however is that its scales weren't black.Naft has the blackest scales so why is he walking the path of the slayer. 7 books in and his dad hasn't made an appearance. I have a feeling his dad would put a stop to his treason. My only hope for Nath is for him to take his first quest back to save Dragons like in the beginning when he was a saint and a hero.
