Two great houses are locked in a struggle against each other ...
The Shadow Master is set in a walled-city during an epidemic of plague in a time of emerging scientific discovery. Two great houses are locked in a struggle against each other for ruling power and the monopoly of trade. Two star-crossed lovers desperately want peace so they can marry. A man with no name, the shadow master, plays one house off against the other for his own gains.
This story had an incredible setting and several famous people as characters. It had a beautiful cover and promised to be an enthralling read, but it left me disappointed. There were too many characters, meaning many were underused and not developed. The plot was convoluted and difficult to follow, plus it had themes such as time travel which never went anywhere. I struggled to read it and, as I approached the end, I desperately hoped that all the sub-plots would come together but they didnât. Instead it moves from point of view to point of view with little or no movement forward. Added to this a raft of steam punkish technology, which was not overly plausible. To top it off, the book has quite a few typos which make for creative reading. I believe there is a sequel, but Iâm disinclined to read it.
    Five Stars
    Good book. Good author. Downloaded.
Overall, the voice in quite interesting. At times laugh out loud funny, The Shadow Master delivers on the promise of its premise
In a city of masks even the truth conceals.
An intriguing work of fiction, The Shadow Master is a fresh variation on a familiar story. Each turn of the page turns cogged wheels within cogged wheels within cogged wheels. Knights, Bishops, Kings and Queen, move and are moved, manipulate and are manipulated --- by love, fear, hate, and want --- âtil love is one: a key to a future.
The story starts in the right place with a tense and blue-tinged hook.
The main characters are compelling and sympathetic; each has distinct voice, virtues, flaws, and a three-dimensional feel. The characters' goals are clear and proactively influence the plot with well-drawn and believable emotions. Secondary characters are also well-drawn and further enhance the story. Inter-character relationships are believable.
The main characters' internal/external conflicts are well defined, as are they organic feeling and believable. The characters act and react in believable ways --- to believable and unexpected plot twists. The premise of the story brings a fresh perspective to an old story while avoiding cliché. There are enough stakes and tension to make this story a "page turner"*.
The story moves along at a good pace, free of information dumps. Each scene adds to and progresses the story in a compelling and believable manner, flowing with effective transitions. Each chapterâs ending compels you to read more as well.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Edge of the Knife, by H Beam Piper is one of the pivotal not felt was by Piper in his "Terra-Human Future History". Piper wrote this novella in 1957 at the height of the Cold War between the Soviet Union, and the United States of America, and seeing into the future could get you locked up in the sanitarium for dissolution all thinking. The protagonist, Charmers, a modern history professor has just such a problem.
    Members Reviews:
    Simply superb
This short story (677 locations) is the first work by H. Beam Piper I have ever read, and it blew me away. I'm about to go on a tear and read everything of his that I can get my hands (or Kindle) on. I've been a fairly omnivorous reader all my life, and can't believe I haven't found Piper before.
Ed Chalmers, Professor of History at stuffy old Blanley College, has made an awkward slip in front of his history class: he gave them a bit of history that hadn't happened yet. He knows a lot of history that hasn't happened yet, thanks to his experiments in imaginative projection. The ramifications of his knowledge of future history (or perhaps his insane ravings?) spread out quickly in this riveting story.
As I read along, I wondered how Piper could wind this story up in a satisfactory way. I half suspected I was about to be treated to one of those irritating non-endings where the author leaves it up to you to decide how it ends. That did not happen, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this story from beginning to end.
An Interesting View of what it means to see the future.
A good offering from H. Beam Piper. Not his best work perhaps, but, as with most of his work, you are left thinking about it long after you have finished reading it. The basic premise of the books is that a prominent professor has visions of the future, a difficult, and terrible future, one that the present World doesn't believe is possible. He keeps insisting that he is right, and, when one of his predictions comes true, a lot of peopled suddenly become interested in what he knows, or, thinks he knows. Like I said, this is a story by H. Beam Piper, so, you just can't go by what happens in the plot, the real story is what is happening in your mind as you begin to understand exactly what is happening. It is hard not to feel a certain empathy with the main character; who among us hasn't been certain, or at least felt, that we know better than others what may come to pass, and have been ridiculed or silenced for speaking out? In this case I'm not talking about seeing the future, I'm talking about how, when someone raises a loud protest against the status quo, they are labelled as nut-cases, distraught, disgruntled, and so on. Well, in this story, there is definitely a twist.
For Free on Kindle, well worth the time.
    Lesser Piper Story
This is one of H. Beam Piper's short storys. It is mediocre and it could have been better considaring how H. Beam Piper was with his writing. This lacks the usuall overall "Space Opera" theme in this story. But on the good side, The Edge of the Knife is really the beginning of Piper's Terro-Human Federation set of Stories. And one sees the potential in this short story
    Again, Classic Piper
A professor of history, in a stodgy old collage, makes a slip that reveals he can see into the future. Things begin to go south for him after that, of course, since few believe him.

    That'll do Wolf, that'll do
Ms. Alsop has done it again, she won my heart. This two part series was just the sweetest thing I've read in awhile. Fade has escaped the enemy holding the Royal family and is ready to fight for their lives but mostly for his love, Kelianna. Now that their love is out in the open, and they are away from the castle, he's free to show her how much he loves her. Through a lot of politics and deal making, Fade has to chance to free them all, but at what cost? Do you make a deal that could cost your life or risk losing the woman he loves but can never have.
This book had me staying up past my bedtime and glued to every page. So much action and a lot of strange things going on. I just hope that Ms. Alsop hops on the chance to write about these characters again. She left a couple unanswered questions out there, just in case.
    Stand-alone book is great!
I did not yet read part one of this story, but there was no confusion to what was going on. Part two of the series is a stand-alone story, with just enough backstory to let me know what happened without bogging the current story down. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will happily go back and read part one to learn the beginning of the story. If it's as good as part 2 (I suspect it is!), I heartily recommend both. If you like werewolves, you'll like this series.
    Awesome!!!!
Never had a series of books touched me the way this one has. One minute I was happy and the next I was crying. I felt so much a part of the story that I couldn't put it down until I was finished. Love, love love this series and would recommend it to anyone who loves a great story. I am looking forward to reading some more by Cheree Alsop!!!!
    Wonderful read.
This is a short series of two books. Every time I had to lay down the books for something so mundane like sleeping or such. I found myself wanting to see what was happing now with Fade. There is so much action and intrigue with these books. Not to mention romance. All of Cheese Alsop's books are written with so much love for her characters and readers. They are written so the young or can enjoy them. The only thing wrong was there wasn't a third book I didn't want it to end. I would recommend all of her books. I have read all the books she has written. You can never go wrong with one of Ms. Alsop's books.
    Great characters and story line!
    So, this was great.
I have been on tenterhooks since the last one came out and ended on such a cliff-hanger! I was really worried the second book wouldn't match up to the first, but Heart of the Wolf Part Two EXCEEDED all my expectations. It was wonderful.
First, I really liked the plot. I've always felt that characters are Cheree's strengths and plot/sentimentality are her weaknesses.

    Fantastic!!
I absolutely loved this book! This was the first book I have read/listened to from Megg Jensen and I will definitely be reading more. The detail to the main character's emotions was amazing. Some scenes really broke my heart.
The narration was so perfect. I loved how Kai Kennicott was able to change voices so much for each character. The added sound affects made it that much more real. My favorite was the Goddess, so amazing! I highly recommend this audio book.

    Great audio performance, boring story
Originally posted at Fantasy Literature. We review SFF, horror, and comics for adults and kids, in print and audio daily.
The Lady of Han-Gilen is the second novel in Judith Tarrs AVARYAN saga. In the first book, The Hall of the Mountain King, we met Mirain, supposedly the son of the sun god Avaryan and a human princess. Mirain appeared in Ianon, where his grandfather rules, became his heir, and fought for control of the kingdom. The story wasnt particularly original, but I enjoyed Tarrs style and Jonathan Daviss audio performance.
This second installment, which can stand alone fairly well, takes place several years later and focuses on a new character: Princess Elian of Han-Gilen, foster sister of Mirain. Red-haired and independently-minded, Elian has left a trail of spurned suitors in her wake, but now shes getting older and feeling the pressure to marry. When she finally meets a man who is good enough to match her in wits and martial skills, its time to finally make the choice she knew shed someday have to make. Instead of marrying the perfect suitor, and probably being a happy wife, she decides to go find Mirain, the boy she promised herself to when she was a little girl. But hes traveling around the continent, trying to peacefully unite neighboring kingdoms under the sun gods rule. So, Elian disguises herself as a boy and sets out to find him. If she succeeds, will he be the same person he was when she knew him? Will he want to marry her?
In The Lady of Han-Gilen we learn some of Mirains backstory, we find out what happened to his mother (the king of Ianons daughter), and we learn about the sun gods enemy and why Mirain wants to unite the kingdoms. (This, of course, is viewed by the other kings as Mirains lust for power.) We also become reacquainted with Mirains squire and we learn that Elian has some powers of her own which might be useful to Mirains kingdom.
The story started off well. Elian is easy to like, at first, when shes knocking off the suitors who arent smart or strong enough for her. But once she finds Mirain and he doesnt act like the rest of her suitors (apparently he has no idea how to woo a woman, which is surprising, because he knows how to charm everyone else), her confidence dwindles and this fiercely independent red-head devolves into a spineless ninny who cant decide who she loves and what she should do. I love Mirain! No, I hate Mirain! I love the other guy! Damn Mirain for not helping me make up my mind! Does he love me? Does the other guy love me? I love Mirain! I hate him! This got boring fairly quickly, yet it went on for hours. Unfortunately, not even the immensely talented Jonathan Davis could make it interesting, though he tried valiantly, contributing lots of emotion and angst to Elians indecision.

    Love this series
Unforgettable characters, amazing imagery, great storyline. This author brings you into his world and you live the story as its happening around you. the narrator does a wonderful job of bringing it all to life.
    Excellent sequel to Onyx Dragon
Where does The Ascent rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
For quality, this book ranks very high.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters and story line fit together nicely. I liked how the characters are all actually different, having personalities of their own. The story is smooth and flowing with heart wrenching moments even more distressing than in the first book. I found myself almost in tears at the end.
What about Keith L. O'Briens performance did you like?
His accent is perfect for narration and I think he did a great job voicing the different characters. Erenoth's accent was a little Romanian sounding, which actually kind of fit him.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I actually did listen to this in one sitting. I wasn't bored once.
    Any additional comments?
I will continue to follow this author and see how well his writing becomes. For this being his second book, it was unreal. The style was even better than the first, so I am looking forward to the next books.

    Wonderful Up & Coming author
After reading this series, I am now watching the news, wondering if any of the things I see on there have been "helped" along by some celetial beings =) This was my first experience with Ms Twomey and it was a delightful surprise.
The story line drew me in and I eagerly anticipated each segment of this series. Fully enjoyed the multi-layered characters which were highly approachable. She demosntrates the ability to have a twisting plot line without ever leaving the reader behind. Excellent book, excellent author. Thank you Ms Twomey for letting us into your world for a moment! I look forward to reading more of her work!
    Rushed the Finale
I was not pleased with the (apparent) end of the series. After 3 delightful installments it seemed the author was in too much of a hurry to just get finished. Unnecessarily killing off Ash with little preamble or justification and ending Henry, asked like fabricated twists just to make the story depressing. Disappointing story, but the ending was as expected.
    Great Book
I really enjoyed this book. When I finished this book I could hardly wait to see what happened in the next book of the series.
    A lot to handle.
There are some very sad parts, principally because when people you care for go through this, it's tough to witness. You can't put it down, though, and it does eventually resolve. Very good, worth reading; gonna miss them.
