    Title: Shakespeare's Cuthbert
    Author: Patrick Barrett
    Narrator: Steve Lawrence
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-06-15
    Publisher: Thorstruck Press
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
The hilarious niche of British comedic writing has a new contender. At the heart of this riotous laugh-a-paragraph farce that will delight members of amateur dramatic societies everywhere lies a forgotten village in a remote valley where the "real valley folk" live, including Cuthbert, the village undertaker, impresario of the shambolic annual theater production, and holy fool; Margery, the local beauty and mother of the Mafia twins whose constant creative disruption provides a reliable source of hazard and misadventure; the anonymous milkman whose flashing teeth can fell a woman at 50 paces; Percy, the gardener whose still waters run curiously if not necessarily deep; and the regulars at the Mandrake Arms who drink to remember and drink to forget as plots and plans flourish in their midst.
Suddenly into this by-water of rural oblivion bursts a band of newcomers who have taken up residence at the seigneurial Mandrake Hall: Henry, a prominent media reporter, and his daughter, who is more horse than her horse; Henry's brother, Ronald, an adventurer, a mercenary, and a sometime crook; and the unreconstituted Captain and his much-put-upon wife, Elspeth.
What are these rank and unlikely outsiders doing in these obscure parts, and what are they looking for as they vigorously comb the village and the extensive network of tunnels built beneath it? One clue is the persistent legend that the bard himself, William Shakespeare, was once employed as a tutor up at the hall (thus the annual village play), and there might still be fragments of his early work--a fumbling, politically incorrect piece--waiting to be discovered. Fame and fortune may follow, but corpses will be dug up first.

    Absolutely funny!
Patrick Barnett's SHAKESPEARE'S CUTHBERT is hilarious. The premise of the plot is that in the (unnamed) valley, William Shakespeare as a young man worked as a tutor at Mandrake Hall. There he wrote his first play, critical of Queen Elizabeth I, who demanded the play be suppressed and Shakespeare turned over to the authorities for justice. The valley people hid the play and protected Shakespeare until the furor died down and it was safe for him to go to the theatrical center of England, London. Valley traditions developed, including every child's receiving a Shakespearean middle name and Cuthbert's family yearly producing a Shakespeare play. Flash forward to present day. Cuthbert, the protagonist, is an undertaker/farmer/theatrical impresario. Various outsiders, convinced that Cuthbert has priceless undiscovered Shakespeare manuscripts, arrive to enrich themselves at his expense. The plotting continues as a comedy of errors, complete with Cuthbert's production of Shakespeare's first play, Shakespeare's CUTHBERT.
If you remember the 1970s Britcom SOME MOTHERS DO `AVE `EM, Frank Spencer is the prototype for Cuthbert--good intentioned, naive, gormless, producing total chaos whenever and wherever he goes, not realizing that he does so. If you don't remember Frank, think Laurel and Hardy. The villains (a former newspaper reporter, his brother who's a mercenary soldier/assassin, a deranged museum curator, a retired army captain, his downtrodden wife, malevolent twins, a thieving antiques dealer, and the head of the valley Mafia) are appropriately evil and bungling, though they are won over through involvement in the play.

    Publisher: Anne R. Allen
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
Part thriller and part screwball romantic comedy, Food of Love tells the story of Regina, a former supermodel, now princess of a tiny European principality, who has lost her skeletal figure and finds herself threatened by an unknown assassin.
Fearing her royal husband wants to kill her now that shes not model-thin, she seeks protection from her estranged African-American foster sister, conservative Christian television pundit, Rev. Cady Stanton.
Reverend Cady has some serious weight and romantic issues of her own, compounded when an "accident" intended for Regina leaves her temporarily blind. But when Regina is declared dead and Cadys seventy-year old secretary is wrongly arrested for smuggling a small nuclear bomb to the funeral, Cady takes control.
With the help of a porn mogul, a Russian spy, a rap diva and her fierce hairdresser-girlfriend, Cady is able to save Regina, restore the bomb to its proper owners, and unearth the long-buried family secrets that hold the key to her own happiness.
Food of Love has all the classic elements of comedy thriller and believable farce that have become the hallmark of an Anne R. Allen novel. Beneath its roller-coaster plot and comic exterior, the story addresses complex issues about body image, ethnicity, religion and a womans right to choose.

    Food of Love
Right off the bat I seemed to have trouble keeping the characters straight, but I persevered due to all the glowing reviews, assuming the story would get more coherent.
I read all the way to the end and was underwhelmed with the ending....just not my kind of writing style, I guess. I love so many of the other female authors who write zany mystery novels that i expected to love this, too. I do appreciate the sensitivity & support for weight issues, religious values and women's health....these, to me . were this book's best features. I just couldn't get to "know" these characters and care about what happened to them.
I bought 3 Kindle books by this author; 2 down and one to go....we'll see. Sorry I can't be more positive in my review...you may like this author's work....it's just not my "cup of tea".
    warm and funny read
I read Food of Love when it was first released from England. I loved it then and love this clean rewrite. Anne has a sense of humor that takes the reader through her characters' crazy yet very human struggles and leaves you giggling. You love them and their quirks.
    Frolic on the Fun Side
I was pleasantly surprised with this read as I had never read anything by this author before. It was a mystery from a comical view. Regina is flighty but funny and her sister, Cady, is pretentious but ultimately human. There is also a surprise ending. I would definitely recommend this book.
    Great Read
Really entertaining. Anne R. Allen has quickly become a favorite author, her stories are entertaining, I cannot put my kindle down. I think she writes really well from different perspectives and she can weave one heck of a story. Well done.
    Foodie or Lover?
Anne Allen at her best. I read the Camilla Randall series backwards - from latest release to earliest. Did not know that at the time but, in any order you do it, DO IT. Fun, fun romp!

    Critic Reviews:
"In a hilarious and touching portrayal of a kindly and misunderstood soul, McCall Smith has created yet another memorable character who will become an instant favourite to his many fans."
"McCall Smith's generous writing and dry humour, his gentleness and humanity, and his ability to evoke a place and a set of characters without caricature or condescension have endeared his books to readers" (New York Times)

    Poor Fatty
I loved the story but thought Fatty had a pretty tough go of it.
Glad he was happy in the end but just felt it fell a bit flat.
    Would read it again, though!
    Good narrator, bad book
I did listen to the whole of the book, but I nearly gave up a number of times.
The good points? Well the narrator was good. The bad? The characters were unlikeable, the situations were unbelievable, and the resolution of the story was unsatisfactory.
I think the author was trying to write in the style of Wodehouse, but it was just far to clumsy.
    enjoyable
this is amusing and I laughed out loud at some of it. easy going and feel good
    Not the usual standard
There is no doubt that I am an avid McCall Smith fan but in my opinion, this book is one of the most disappointing. I have lived at the book's location on the east side of Lough Derg (there is no 'south side' )for 60 years; a local has never called it the 'lough', always the 'lake'.I know this is a tiny research point but it distracts from the authenticity as one realises that someone who usually speaks Scottish-English is telling a pretend story about Ireland. The mystery of Fatty's missing clothes from the laundry room is left unsolved, just suggesting that Mrs O'Connor was using them as rags. However, why would she need to when she has an accumulation of left behind property.
A reader might think that I'm being pedantic, but that is not true. I am familiar with copious McCall Smith works and have been spoilt by flawless research that has transported me from Botswana to Edinburgh in blissful cloud of fiction!

    Title: Eating Trees
Subtitle: A Piece of Total Fiction
    Author: Jeff Koppelson
    Narrator: A. T. Al Benelli
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-14
    Publisher: Jeffrey Koppelson
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
Eating Trees is a rags-to-riches-to-rags story of an ordinary working guy who suddenly has an extraordinary idea.
Nick Cerelli has always been "big-boned," as he and his family refer to their tendency to put on weight. He works hard as a laborer but never seems to get ahead until he makes an observation one day while working on a construction job: Fine sawdust feels like flour.
"See, my big idea was to make some kinda diet Twinkie outta sawdust. Really. And why not? Lucky just showed me sawdust that looks and feels like flour! Fine enough to powder a baby's rear end. Talk about lucky!"
Knowing that sawdust can't be digested, he speculates that if he could somehow make an appetizing cookie out of the sawdust, he could cash in on the diet craze and finally make his fortune; dieters could enjoy the cookies and not put on weight unless, in his words, they were termites.
Nick enlists his friends and family in the scheme to invent an artificially flavored and sweetened sawdust cookie and starts up his own company, Beaver Brand. For a brief while, Beaver Brand becomes the latest Big Thing, and Nick and his crew get to experience the sweet taste of success until people eating too many of his delicious cookies start to have digestive issues.
Nick relates his story in the first person, speaking in the colorful dialect of his New York neighborhood. Anyone who has battled weight issues or dreamed of "hitting it big" will relate to and laugh at Nick's preposterous idea as he thinks it through and decides that this is it: This is going to be his ticket to the good life.

    Hilarious!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Oh definitely... This was sooooo fun to listen to... All my friends at one time or another... have dreamed of making it big... Have been on some kind of diet... Have fallen in love with Italians and their food... Have run across a character like this...
What other book might you compare Eating Trees to and why?
Is there a book version of "My Cousin Vinny"? I mean... it's just like that! If you liked that movie with that little Italian mob guy as the lawyer... you're gonna love this.
Have you listened to any of A. T. Al Benellis other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. I'm a fan and follower of his. I would put this up as one of his BEST... if not THE BEST! I see it won an Earphones Award...
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It has to be at the end when he argues his case with the other lawyer... Only Italians have that kind of "logical" thinking. I laughed out loud...
    Any additional comments?
Other than the occasional 'cuss words" this would make a great family movie. As it is I wouldn't give it to young kids... but for teens on up? Hell Yeah. Fuhggeddaboudit!
Wanna relax with a fun story ?
Eating Trees was a fun, entertaining jaunt through the lives of colorful characters. Al did a great job of keeping the story flow moving and wanting me to hear each succeeding chapter and story.
A must to listen to. Great light hearted story.
Easy listening story about a guy trying to make it big. Narrations were wonderful.
Funny Story Made Hilarious by Expert Delivery!
Have you listened to any of A. T.

    fun book
As a podcast and audio drama comedy fan, I have been enjoying Bell's in the Batfry for years. I think for this book the blurb is pretty accurate but I enjoy good puns and not always so good jokes.(if good pun is indeed not oximoronic) As soon as I heard Mr Bell's recent interview and audio book preview on the Sonic Society I had to check it out. I am finding the book to be filled with groaners and belly laughs. Some of the language is kinda cchloccchmik. (oops that may be a spoiler)
I have been enjoying this audio book enough that I don't mind if I lose my place and wind up relistening to parts.
I did see a couple of the jokes coming from following Mr Bells podcast but that did not stop me from really enjoying the book. A plus is he did not use up all the good stuff in the previews. I think if you like the previews you will like the book or at least it was true for me.
I can hear bells in the batfry as I read this
There's a gag on every page. Great fun with homonyms.
Look for his podcast and give that a listen. I wish there were more.

    The \Hole Story!!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hole Opportunity to be better than the print version?
I never read the printed version, but I laughed all the way through the audiobook. "I'm a HOLE farmer!!"
Who was your favorite character and why?
Collin was my favorite character because of his ideas. They were so out there and you just knew they were going to go wrong....somehow...
Have you listened to any of Pete Nottages other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first time I have listened to this reader. He did a good job since I could tell everyone apart, which for me is what a good reader does. :-)

All the more bizarre, he arrived just in time for Founder's Day.

    highly entertaining
KHDZ by David Beshears is an entertaining tale of what happens when red tape and ill completed paperwork in Heaven happens. John Smith is sent from Heaven straight to Hell. Although he repeatedly submits requests pointing out the error, he is doomed to spend some time in the hottest place on earth. As a result of the mistake, Smith is assigned to the Hades television station. Here he meets characters that are unique and obviously strange both in appearance and personality. On top of this he is forced to deal with programming that is anything but fun, it is boring, nonsensical and annoying after all he is in Hell no one is supposed to enjoy things there!
Founders day and the fear of pleasing Mr. Horn is overwhelming. All the Founders day games and activities are geared to make Mr. Horn happy. A record amount of lost souls in the parade and the paperwork error bring Mr. Horn to the station first time in 4 or 5 years! Smith thought his time in Hell was bad? Wait until he meets Mr. Horn aka Nicolas Cage look-alike.
This presented quite a different take on Hell; highly entertaining. Michael Bradley did a great job of voicing the characters. It was light, frivolous and fun. Bradley didnt hinder the fun he kept it going.
I had no issues with production.

Great start, bad ending, ok effort.
As the book started out, I thought I was going to love it. Similar to Neil Gaiman in style the story was original and entertaining. As the story carried on, the characters were developed nicely and I was still enjoying the book when... it abruptly ended. It seemed like the author was in full stride when the publisher called and told him "times up".
