    Publisher's Summary:
The first installment in the legendary Matt Helm thrillers
Matt Helm, one-time special agent for the American government during the Second World War, has left behind his violent past to raise a family in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When a former colleague turns rogue and kidnaps his daughter, Helm is forced to return to his former life as a deadly and relentless assassin.
Originally released in the era of the James Bond novels, the Matt Helm novels were considered grittier and more realistic than Bond, garnering them critical praise and an ardent audience.
    Members Reviews:
    Great tension... and that VOICE!
Would you consider the audio edition of Death of a Citizen to be better than the print version?
Didn't read the print but i really appreciate the reader. It was weird when he was speaking as a woman (when is it not?) but beyond that... man. Just perfect. Greatly added to my experience. Especially considering Helm's pragmatic disposition.
What other book might you compare Death of a Citizen to and why?
Casino Royale. Obviously. Endless parallels. The vixens effecting the protagonist, the callous protagonist, both spies blah blah blah. Helm is essentially retired here where as Bond is still operating. Bond is presented as monster then stripped into a man. Helm is presented as a man and abruptly revealed to be a monster.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The climactic portion of the hotel because it was a moment where the tension exploded.
    OR
The portion where Tina's husband follows Matt.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Matt's savagery and directness during an important scene. It really shows his "shoot first, talk... eventually" training. He his very decisive and does not flourish just because " thats what cowboys do" or "a speech would sound good here".
    Any additional comments?
A more than decent story. The ending wasnt as exciting as id hoped but the build up was fantastic. Matt was believable and consistent in his ideals methods so it made him feel more real. I felt like the world bent around him. Rather than "Our hero" changing bit by bit to make him more human or relatable. Matt is a force. The reader is more than noteworthy!
Not the Matt Helm you're thinking ...
Where does Death of a Citizen rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Very good thriller.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yep. Loved Helm's being torn between two worlds. I enjoyed the grittiness of the writing; so far from the Hollywood Dean Martin movies as you can imagine.
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?
Top of his game. He's always amazing. Could read my grocery list.
    Any additional comments?
Book is too short! I'm on to the next in the series.
    lets face it, it's Helm!
to be perfectly honest, the guy reading this book, does not seem to be misreading anything in the book, its all there! surprisingly how adult ,slight smokey voice, sounds about the right age that Helm would be, perfect mesh of book and reader, really with this audio version giving you the works, makes you wonder why you need to actually read books any more, just exactly right!!
    New to the series.
Really enjoyed this story and will be buying the rest of the series.

Title: Dry Bones in the Valley

    Author: Tom Bouman
    Narrator: Joe Barrett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-22-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 74 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
When an elderly recluse discovers a corpse on his land, Officer Henry Farrell follows the investigation to strange places in the countryside, and into the depths of his own frayed soul.
In Wild Thyme, Pennsylvania, secrets and feuds go back generations. The lone policeman in a small township on the sparse northern border, Henry Farrell expected to spend his mornings hunting and fishing, his evenings playing old-time music. Instead, he has watched the steady encroachment of gas drilling bring new wealth and erode neighborly trust. The drug trade is pushing heroin into the territory. There are outlaws cooking meth in the woods, guys Henry grew up with. When a stranger turns up dead, Henrys search for the killer will open old wounds, dredge up ancient crimes, and exact a deadly price.
With vivid characters and flawless pacing, Tom Bouman immerses listeners in rural northeastern Pennsylvania, a region in the grip of change. In these derelict woods full of whitetail deer and history, the hunt is on.
    Members Reviews:
Good mystery rich with character and context
What did you love best about Dry Bones in the Valley?
There may not be a better mystery writer publishing today. Mystery is well plotted without resorting to generic formulae. Characters, setting, and context are brought to life in literate prose. Rural Northeast Pennsylvania, with its methamphetamine labs and hydrofracking wells and contrast of newly rich landowners and down-and-out renters was richly described.
What other book might you compare Dry Bones in the Valley to and why?
Winter Bones, which brought the backwoods of Mississippi onto the big screen in a frighteningly realistic way. This book would make a great TV miniseries, like True Detective.
Which character as performed by Joe Barrett was your favorite?
Henry Farrell was the everyman- impossible not to relate to him.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Total immersion. Love a book that takes me to a new place and introduces me to characters I feel I already know.
    Any additional comments?
I understand this is a debut novel- I can see the seeds have been planted for sequels, and I am looking forward to them!
    Authentic background, excellent narration.
I come from Pennsylvania's coal country and the landscape, economic problems and alcoholism are all authentic. The more current issues of meth and fracking are new to me but handled with a resignation and understanding that seems just right. The narrator reads beautifully without acting. Reminiscent of George Guidall's handling of the Longmire stories. Very good story; hope it's the first of many.
    Boring
What did I even just listen to?
Get lost several times and the narrative didn't help at all. Boring and dull
Dry Bones in the Valley: A Novel
I could listen to Joe Barrett read the telephone directory and so running though his back catalogue I came across Dry Bones which at the time hadn't been rated and so I thought I would give it a shot. The story I found a little confusing, probably because I have a terrible memory for names, but the characterisations and the descriptions in many instances blew me away... very well observed. I absolutely loved the writing style and look forward to the next book from Tom Bouman.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
A prosecutor of violent criminals. A detective on a dangerous beat. Together, these seasoned pros take on an off-the-books case that threatens to strip them of all they hold dear. When a 22-year-old killer walks into the courtroom, his eyes confirm what Mia Quinn already guesses: He blames her for his conviction. In seconds, he knocks her to the ground and holds a razor blade to her throat. She manages to escape, but it's just one more reminder that Mias job prosecuting Seattles most dangerous criminals is risky.
As a single mom, the last thing Mia wants is for her work to follow her home - or discover that it already has. Now Detective Charlie Carlson is suggesting the very thing Mia doesnt want to believe - that her accountant husband's deadly car accident was no accident at all. When Mia and Charlie encounter resistance to reopening the case, they take the investigation into their own hands. And find much more than they bargained for. Was Mia's husband more than an accountant - and less than an honest man? As the truth becomes more shocking and the case grows more complex, her husband's enemies take note of Mia - and her children. How far will this prosecutor go to learn the truth, and how far will she have to go to protect her family?
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent crime mystery!
Despite not having listened to Book 1 in this series this novel, Book 2 stood up well on its own. The protagonist is a prosecutor whose accountant husband was believed killed in an auto accident but was actually murdered by his jeweler client.
    Excellent mystery!
Another great book from this duo! I love the mystery woven with social issues and the struggles that take place with the characters in this mystery - Lise Wiehl is one of my favorite authors!
Good Mystery without the Usual Filth
Finally a good mystery without the f word in every other sentence . . . good writing, believable characters, crimes committed and followed up on . . .Mia's job prosecuting Seattle's most dangerous felons is a hard one, a single mom after losing her husband, she has a preschooler and a teenager. . . but she hasn't turned callous . . . and she can't turn a blind eye to "the least of these" . . . Mia suffers as any wife would when she learns that her accountant husband was an adulterer and perhaps assisted his clients in illegal activities . . . then when she and detective, Charlie Carlson begin to investigate his death, suspecting something other than an automobile accident, things become dangerous for her and her family . . .
    Disappointed by sloppy detail.
    Any additional comments?
When a story is set in a real setting -- in this case Seattle/King County-- it is usually best to continue to use real places or, at the very least choose the names of fictional places with care. Otherwise, readers familiar with the geography have trouble staying in the story. I enjoyed book 1 of this story. But in book 2 the authors chose to set the site of Mia's husband's death in the county south of King County. They chose to give that county a fictional name (probably because the painted the sheriff's department in an unfavorable light). However, they chose to give the county the name of an actual city south of Seattle. This makes it look like a mistake and throws the reader out of the story every time they run across that name.

    LOVE THIS GIRL
I have truly enjoyed the Lucy Valentine mysteries. These are good books and are not smutty. Lucy does tend to spend way to much time wondering if there is true love for her and if it will last.
    fun story, great characters.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator is great with her voices. At times I hear actress Jennifer Coolige speaking. it's fun
    Great Fun
A sense of fun and magic without losing touch with reality is a mix that's hard to pull off, but Heather Webber manages it. I've come to love the world inhabited by Lucy and her friends and family and can relate to her choices and struggles as well as her story. The mysteries are good enough to keep my attention too. Definitely worth the money.

Lucy Valentine is as smart as can be, as single as you can get, and so not qualified to run a matchmaking service. But when her parents temporarily step down from the family business, Valentine, Inc., it's Lucy's turn to step up and help out - in the name of love.
    Plus, her rent is due.
Here's the problem: Lucy doesn't have the knack for matchmaking. According to family legend, every Valentine has been blessed by Cupid with the ability to read "auras" and pair up perfect couples. But not Lucy. Her skills were zapped away years ago in an electrical surge, and now all she can do is find lost objects. What good is that in the matchmaking world? You'd be surprised. In a city like Boston, everyone's looking for something. So when Lucy locates a missing wedding ring - on a dead body - she asks the sexy private eye who lives upstairs to help her solve the perfect crime. And who knows? Maybe she'll find the perfect love while she's at it

    The Perfect Narrator
Have you listened to any of Dina Pearlmans other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to all of Dina Pearlman's narrations for Heather Webber's books. She is absolutely perfect with different voices for the different characters. I can't wait for the next installment because this narrator brings the characters to life. I'm hooked!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    definitely
    Glacial romance
    Any additional comments?
The romance in the story was slow moving and bland. 4 books in and the couple are still trying to form a deep connection, which is a shame because the narrator is humorous and light hearted, which I usually enjoy. Overall the characters just left me rolling my eyes and the romance lacked the heat that could have made up for that. It felt like I was listening to the toned down love story I'd relay to my bible bashing mum.
    Cute light listen
Kinda fun. Good little twist I didn't expect. I think I'll continue with the series.
was a great story with fun characters.
I found Heather Webber from her other books, and I love both.
Entertaining characters, that feel real...even with the "magic". It is a story that I know I will come back to again and again.
    Truly
Good read, little slow at first. But overall fun story and loved the narration. looking forward to next one.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 37 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Written in the tradition of Robert B. Parker's Spenser and Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, the Jim Knighthorse series introduces a new hard-hitting, wise-cracking hero with a modern twist.
Private investigator Jim Knighthorse returns in book 4 of the series when he's hired to find out if Freddie Calgary, a popular movie and TV star, really overdosed and died two years ago, or if he is still alive. The investigation turns into a big road trip as Jim follows the clues to L.A., Sedona, and San Antonio. There is plenty of action and danger as the dark side of Hollywood spills its blood, secrets and scandal over three cities.
    Members Reviews:
    Best Knighthorse yet
Once past the first two or three chapters the Spenser clone aspect of the series faded a bit and more aspects of the character evolved. Jim is still the one woman man; Cindy (Susan.) The dog that sleeps in his bed; Junior (Pearl.) The homicide detective that he's tight with; Sanchez (Quirk or Belson.) However the character of Jack sets Knighthorse apart from not only Spenser, but from pretty much any of the fictional literary detectives. Jack is a man who may or not be god; dresses and smells like someone who sleeps in an alley or behind a dumpster. An agent named Atkins appears in Knighthorse's doorway. his star client Freddie Calgary died of an overdose in Sedona two years earlier. Things get complicated the next day Atkins is killed by a gunshot to the head. So Knighthorse heads for the red rocks of Sedona. Rather than spoil the second half of the book I'll just say that our boy Jim kicks ass, takes names and brings justice to a couple of not so nice thugs. An excellent escapist story and Knighthorse is an entertaining character.
    Hilarious!
audiobook, comedy, contemporary, detective, hard-boiled, hilarious, mystery, murder
Never met a Rain book I didn't like, and this is no exception. Lots of snarks and innuendo and a main character who certainly is adds to an intriguing mystery. If certain aspects of Jim Knighthorse weren't so blatantly tongue in cheek, he could be rather annoying, but you can't stay irked at a guy who has lunch with God. The mystery is good and full of twists and red herrings, so enjoy!
Jason Starr is terrific as narrator and has the sardonic down pat.
    Great Rain ,,,keep them coming.
I love Jim. and of course Jack. Great story and characters. I am a big fan of J.R Rain. Maybe his number 1# .
    ANOTHER ENTERTAINING JIM KNIGHTHORSE STORY
What made the experience of listening to Clean Slate the most enjoyable?
the tongue in cheek humor plus the idea of God at McDonalds. The story is well written and entertaining.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jim Knighthorse, of course. He doesn't realize how limited he is.
What about Jason Starrs performance did you like?
He SOUNDS like Jim Knighthorse. He does a great job with the other characters, too.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    a bit boring plot realy
OK to read since it is part of a series but really didn't seem it had much interest maybe Beaune the carafes were not fleshed out
    Stories Getting Blah
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would make it shorter, it has a lot of empty word that could have been eliminated. Took forever for me to listen to the one.
Would you be willing to try another book from Carolyn Hart? Why or why not?
Yes I already have the next one but I think it will be my last one. A little disappointed in the last few books. They just drag. Too many word to describe everything. Some stuff is so unimportant.
Did Death at the Door inspire you to do anything?
Yes to quickly listen the #25 and not purchase anymore. I don't like forcing myself to finish a book, which I always have to do.
Too much of a good thing
I really found this mystery to have too many characters, too many lists; it was especially tedious to get through as an audiobook.
    Uggh! Very disappointing last novel!
What would have made Death at the Door better?
I have loved this series because I love Annie and Max Darling and I love the time she spends at the bookstore with all the other goofy female characters.
What was most disappointing about Carolyn Harts story?
This story had NO side stories about the beloved characters in the Death On Demand Series. I had to stop the book halfway through as I could not bear the grossly exaggerated descriptions of every little motion made or emotion felt.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    Voice was way too syrupy.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Nope, especially given that the series has been excellent and this was such a divergence from the series.
Can someone wake me when the book is finished...
What would have made Death at the Door better?
Some excitement, a narrator that could read like the cared.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Another author, not this one. Was looking to add to the list of books I read/listen to, but won't be adding this author or narrator.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Readings performances?
    No
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment

This was on the dark side of cozy. It still had the cozy feel that Sarah Graves created in Eastport Maine. But, the plot was dark with lots of twist and turns. I loved it. I can't wait for the next book.

    Take me to this Beach
Another fun Fried ride. Take a little bit of action, a little bit of mystery and a little bit of the beach and you have yourself a neat little book. Nothing too heart pounding, and nothing too serious, but if youre looking for something that has some mystery and helps take you to the beach while your reading you should definitely look at eating this Falafel dish. As an added bonus these are great standalone so you can start from the beginning or just jump into the series here!
Mr. Ellis does a good job bringing the book to life but his delivery is sloooooow. I listened to this on 1.5X and found it easy to follow along.
