10 hours of frustration coming to a ludicrous end
I have read all of the other Dr Silkstone novels , I got hooked on the first one and so kept reading. While the quality declined I kept on reading. The cliff hanger at the end of the fourth book was frustrating but little did I know what frustration was until this fifth book.
I kept wondering why this doctor who is credited with being a brilliant practitioner kept doing stupid things. He blunders through three months of trying to get his lover released. From a mental hos
    A let down
Would you try another book from Tessa Harris and/or Simon Vance?
I doubt it, which is a pity. After reading The Lazarus Curse, I had high hopes for this novel. Harris does her historical research and chooses cutting edge topics -- the slave trade in the UK, enclosures. Unlike the first Thomas Silkstone mystery, however, this one asks the reader to believe in a protagonist who is smart enough to solve mysteries but naive enough not to see the obvious deceptions in characters around him. Over and over Silkstone enters into a scene with a villain only to be hoodwinked again. Tedious stuff; maybe his naivete is supposed to signify a "hero." It doesn't work. The ending was a drag and tedious as well; I could have predicted it from a mile off.
I think Harris got tired of him, as did I.
Would you recommend Shadow of the Raven to your friends? Why or why not?
    No.
Which character as performed by Simon Vance was your favorite?
Vance does a good job with all the male characters; his ventriloquized female voice is a little too breathy and high pitched to be believed. I ended up wishing Lydia would just be quiet (not his fault so much as the author's, who gives us a giddy fool for a heroine who is, like her lover, hoodwinked at every turn).
Was Shadow of the Raven worth the listening time?
I'd say no, though I was interested to hear more about the enclosures. In the end I stuck it out, but not quite sure why -- the black and white good vs. evil is a bit much to take.

    Another incredible Willimina Carson thriller
What starts off to be a routine murder mystery suddenly twists and turns to be something so much more complex in its issues.
We also delve into the personal lives of Willa and her husband.. the struggles they go through not only in their professional but also personal lives.
A rash of rather gruesome dead bodies have been turning up dumped in various places(obviously not where they had been killed). They appear to have no connection with each other..
I must admit I did not see the ending or the bad-guy coming which in itself is a great achievement with a crime novel.
Going by this book I will be reading more from this author about her heroine Judge Willa Carson.

The Skeleton Road - Highly Recommended!
Val McDermid does it again, fantastic story line that keeps you riveted right to the end. Cathleen McCarron, as the narrator, must be, in my humble opinion, one of the best narrators I have heard. Her ability to make the listener "live" the story is unbelievable. I will certainly look out for other books she has narrated.
In summary a brilliant storyline excellently narrated. Highly recommended!
I started thinking with a Scottish accent
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I love Val McDermid's books and have been a fan for a long time. This did not feel like her other books, it seemed to take a very different direction. I would recommend it to people but would manage their expectations that it is not typical of her other work.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I loved it. I admit I was hoping for a happier ending but the story didn't build to an "and they lived happily ever after" scenario. That said, it didn't have a sad ending - it ended the best way it could.
What three words best describe Cathleen McCarrons performance?
    Amazing at accents
Was The Skeleton Road worth the listening time?
Yes it was. It was depressing at times and I felt so much compassion for the protagonist, I kept hoping things would look up for her. The story was very intriguing and had some interesting surprises along the way.
    Any additional comments?
Val is a master at her art. I did find Cathleen's Scottish accent quite heavy and not always easy to follow. After a few hours, I started thinking with a Scottish accent. :-) I almost fell over when she read dialogue of American, European or English characters because her accent changed dramatically. She is very good at that. She gave an excellent performance.
    disappointed
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I love Val McDermid's books but, although intelligently written, I found it a boring story with too many surplus to requirements characters
Half way through, I was longing for it to end. I failed to find a character I could like and follow with interest.
Disappointing as a crime thriller but interesting
The discovery of a skeleton on the roof top of a high building in Edinburgh leads to an investigation which soon takes us back to the Balkans War of the nineties. This was the most interesting part of the book as a retrospective of the War and the crimes committed during that period inevitably lead the reader to question how and why such atrocities occur and no doubt will occur until the end of time. On the one hand we are faced with that part of human nature which we think civilisation can shield us from. The institution of Justice is perhaps the highest human achievement to counter balance our more savage instincts. The story argues against taking the law into one's own hands no matter how badly a criminal has behaved.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 46 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Please note: Blessed Are the Dead has also been published under the alternate title Silent Valley.
A remote town. A girl of rare and exquisite beauty. A murder that silences a whole community.
The body of a seventeen-year-old girl has been found covered in wildflowers on a hillside in the Drakensberg Mountains, near Durban. She is the daughter of a Zulu chief, destined to fetch a high bride price. Was Amahle as innocent as her family claims, or is her murder a sign that she lived a secret life?
Detective Sergeant Emmanuel Cooper is sent to investigate. He must enter the guarded worlds of a traditional Zulu clan and a white farming community to gather up the clues Amahle left behind and bring her murderer to justice. But the silence in the valley is deafening, and it seems that everyone - from the uncooperative local police officer, to the white farm boy who seems obsessed with the dead girl - has something to hide.
With no cause of death and no motive, Cooper's investigation is blocked at each turn. Can he tough it out, or will the small-town politics that stir up his feelings about the past be more than he can bear?
In this tale of murder and mystery, Nunn entangles us in a rich and complex web of witchcraft, tribalism, taboo relationships...and plain old-fashioned greed.
    Critic Reviews:
"Will ... resonate in your mind long after you have turned the last page." (Courier Mail)

    Fantastic!!
Such a gift for story telling, I truly enjoyed this book. So hard to find a book that doesn't drag, get boring and that you can predict what's going to happen. So worth the credit!!
It gets better by the book
Narrator is wonderful, story too.Next book downloaded.Do read the series,it takes you to another time and place.
    Humphrey Bower is amazing
Best narrator ever! Humphrey Bower is amazing. I will listsen to anything he reads! the best!
    Great Detective Listen
I really loved this book. As an avid reader of police procedurals I am always on the lookout for a great series and Malla Nunn has really delivered with Blessed are the Dead. A beautiful Zulu girl has been found dead in the remote farming country of 1950s apartheid South Africa and our troubled white police detective, with his native partner in tow, has been sent to dig in to the case.
The crime scene offers up very few clues, but just enough information for our team to start asking questions. Questions lead to more clues, more suspects, and so on until our wide circle slowly begins to tighten down on a few good possibilities. Nunn manages to keep the conclusion at a distance but allows you the reader to arrive at it simultaneously with the police. There are no jumps of logic or giant clues just falling in their path; they get to their killer one step at a time bringing you along for the ride. That is the hallmark of a masterful police procedural.
The book also offers up an indirect commentary on apartheid and racism in general, not only as it relates to blacks (natives) and whites, but the whole range of society and where each person fits into it.

Fascinating, historical, informative, and lots is suspense. You learn a lot about how the economic system functions. A totally unique story. I think this work should be translated into English.
A Story that keeps you reading!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The issues it addresses are close to reality, and the story is very interestnig. Some passages can be somewhat predictable, but this does not affect the overall experience at all.
    one of the best

Terrific But READ "WOUNDED PREY" FIRST!!
If you haven't read first in this Sean Lynch series, stop this review now and look for "Wounded Prey"! This is the second in what Sean Lynch describes as a trilogy in a Bob Farrell and Kevin Kearns hard boiled private eye epic. While this book stands on its own bottom, it will ruin "Wounded Prey" for you Don't let that happen, K?
In a way, I found "The Fourth Motive" better than "Wounded Prey" largely because first novels have to allow the new writer to discorge so many thoughts s/he've had in thinking up the first go at getting a publisher's attention. In "The Fourth Motive" Lynch is freed to build upon the dense characterizations of his tough-guy heroes and their motivations. Which allows even more pace to get packed into the narrative.
This book is faster (not shorter - faster) than the first but leaves you coughing up GSR, eye-dazzled from flashing gun muzzles. The book's violent, just, and satisfying if a BIG TAD non-PC.
If you can live with a Batman who works on the the darker side of the law You'll live contentedly with Farrell and Kearns. I'm going to preorder "Officer Involved" the third in this trilogy due out this Spring.
Can't wait for another Jeff Harding creation of a Sean Lynch ensemble. Harding rocks!
    Not for the squeamish....
Sean Lynch stories are "graphic" w/ violence from psychos... but "funny" at the same time. This one was very similar to the first one.
The old guy / young guy duo vs crazy psychos would make a good movie.
    Will be waiting for #3.
    great book
great book great series!! narration fantastic!!! can't wait to read more in this series
    expectations met: yes
    recommend to a friend: yes
Not as good as the first, bu still good...
This is second Farrell and Kearn novel and the plot is a continuation of the first installment. A year has gone by since retired cop Farrell duped young deputy Kearn into joining him on an illegal, nationwide manhunt for a serial child killer. While all of their crimes were wiped clean after that affair, they still have a bad reputation with Bay Area police forces.
A powerful retired judge hires the pair as body guards for his daughter after she is attacked and nearly killed by a stranger. The judge had read their files and knew the two heroes were better equipped to protect and pursue the unknown, deadly adversary.
This is another fast read with plenty of action, violence and tragedy.

    Really different
What did you like best about The Conjurer? What did you like least?
The story is fairly good, but what dreadful narration!! Voice is harsh, emphasis is often put in the wrong place, and pronunciation is simply hopelessly poor! I doubt the narrator read two pages without at least one mispronounced word, beginning with the name of the main character's father, who is our missing body. I simply can't imagine paying someone for that extremely abysmal performance. Read the book rather than listening to it.
    Odd narration
If you could sum up The Conjurer in three words, what would they be?
    Historical mystery story
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Conjurer?
The discovery by Martha of the true identities of men she had trusted.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Oddly, the narrator frequently mispronounced words. Skintillating for scintillating. Oh de cologne once but OOH de cologne another time. Rag Out instead of ragoo. Sparesly instead of Sparsley and A--gret rather than E--gret.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No. I just enjoyed it, especially Martha's character
