Pretty good beginning...

Kathleen Bridge has written a pretty good beginning for a new series. The story is original and it has a few twists. Im looking forward to the next installment. I recommend this to cozy mystery fans.

Murder of the Elite

In Better Homes and Corpses by Kathleen Bridge, Meg Barrett has recently started her own decorating business that also offers appraisals when one day she runs into her former roommate from one semester in college, Jillian Spenser, descendant of the most important of all the important families from the exceedingly rich East Hamptons. Invited to a party at ns home, Meg is delighted to get a phone call the day after the party from Jillians widowed mother, who wants to hire Meg to go through all the items in the attic to see if there is anything of value there. But when Meg, who narrates the book, shows up at her appointed time, no one answers the bell at the door. Meg then knocks manually, and the door swings open, giving her a view of Jillian cradling her stabbed mother on the floor and acting semi-comatose.

Meg has no intent of investigating the murder, but her business partner, Elle, takes on the enormous job of cataloguing all the items of Mrs. Spenser, for the benefit of her insurance company, thrusting Meg into the world of the upper crust and detection into murder. In the midst of all this negativity, Meg finds herself drawn to Jillians older brother, Cole, who has talked on the phone with his mother and sister but not visited them in 17 years.

This book is enjoyable, but I did find myself getting confused at times with the number of characters, especially since Meg only learns about their positions in relation to the rest of the household late in the book. It would have helped us readers keep straight all the characters in the book to allow us to know more about them earlier in the book. But aside from that, I really did enjoy the book.

Vanessa Daniels provides a solid narration of this book. Her voices provided for each character suit them well. With the book written in first person from Megs point of view, Daniels keeps the narration moving without letting it get overly emotional.

Such a cozy book

Laura's determination to uncover the truth of the murder in her town is truly awe-inspiring. The companionship between her and her friends show how much is possible when people stick together. Listening to their story spoken by Angel Clark has been a peaceful time for me.

mediocre at best

I'm not 12 so I can't give a fair review to this attempt at young adult drama.

Spotty entertainment

There are parts of the story that I found interesting, but the characters were unbelievable. I might have been more enthralled if it weren't for the irritating voice of the narrator. The best part of this story is that is was short.

I suppose it's OK

I really wanted a library mystery. This is romance in which a librarian stars. She could just as easily be an insurance sales person considering the part this woman's work life plays in this book. Good for romance readers.

Boring

Come on! can someone think of another better mystery book to write? this would be a good book if main character didn't sound like she was whining and complaining through some of the book.

Good writer

I think the first book about Darling Dahlias was The Cucumber Tree. This is a very good series written by Susan Wittig Albert. The series starts at the beginning of the depression in the 1930's. The characters are very well described and charming. This is how to write a cozy mystery. Not a romance novel . No repetitious fact rehashing ,no blood and gore, just very interesting situations and character description. Very well done.

Also, her China Bayle's mystery's are well written, although I probably would not try the herbal receipts unless I had a café in my small town. Great writing. You will enjoy these books.

I must say I have not listen to Albert's Beatrix Potter series, but I am sure they are well written.

Always intriguing

I love this history lesson bottled up into a great story with some of my favorite characters. Can't wait for more of the Darling Dahlias.

A really entertaining recording.

Susan Wittig Albert always produces a story that holds the reader's interest until the satisfying ending. The reader added personality to each character by providing voice and intonation to dialogue - only a real talent carries this off effectively and this reader did it excellently! Try it, you'll like the book!

This quickly-moving thriller is set in France and reminds me of novels by Sam Christer and others. It's a bit of a stretch to believe certain plot twists, but if you like stories with really creepy villains, you may enjoy this one.

This is a great book; this is the third book in The Sleuth Sisters Mysteries series written by Maggie Pill and narrated by Anne Jacques, Judy Blue, and Laura Bednarski. Faye, Barb, and Reta are three sisters who grew up on farm. They have been renting the farm out to Ben McAdams, his girlfriend Rose, and her three daughters. When Ben and his family abruptly leave the farm, the three sisters are stuck caring for a menagerie of animals and the mystery of what happened to Ben and the ladies. Faye, Barb, and Reta put their sleuthing skills to the test to find out what really happened to them.

The narrators Anne, Judy, and Laura did a great job with this book, and was very easy to listen to. They did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to in one sitting and I didnt want to stop listening until the end.

If you are looking for a great mystery, with humor and great characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrators.

Savy mystery story

This cozy mystery takes place in Mackinac Island, on the sleuth sisters family farm. The three sisters, Faye, Barb, and Reta grew up on this lovely farm that they were renting out to a very quiet and godly man Ben McAdams. Ben had taken up with a single mother of three, and moved them in with him. One day the sisters receive a letter from McAdams stating that he and the ladies moved, left town, so sorry to not give a notice of departure. Right then and there the Smart Detective Agency side of the sisters raised a red flag! When the sisters go to the farm to prepare it for new renters, they uncover a ghastly secret! With nowhere to go but forward, the sleuth sisters on are on the case!

The story was very relaxed and comfortable with the pacing. I am new to this series, never having read books one or two, but I did not feel like it was hard to follow. Reta, Barb and Faye all had unique qualities about them that meshed well with each other, and I appreciated their relationships.

'Nice'

Would you try another book written by Val McDermid or narrated by Paddy Glynn?

I would try another book by Val McDermid as the story jogged along quite well, although I had worked out the twist really early on. However, I found the narration a bit hurried.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

the story being set in 2 time frames was good, particularly as the earliest time frame brought back many memories of my youth. the least interesting was that the reveal was pretty obvious very early on.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration sounded to hurried.

just about

enjoyed lots of it a bit & bits of it a lot!

'bear with the first 1/3 or so of this one..I found it slow & one-dimensional & uninteresting. After that though, McDermid gets into gear & things do become interesting! I'd recommend.

PS- from very early the 'whodunnit' in this story is obvious but that's ok - it's intriguing to sit back & listen to McDermid's plot.

Another great book from Val

Would you consider the audio edition of A Place of Execution to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book but cannot fault my enjoyment of the audio reading. As with all of this author's books you are quickly gripped by the story and whisked away. The characters are well written and have great 'human' flaws. I would recommend to any reader of this genre as it is a cracking story and well worth trying a Val McDermid book.

Good book overall

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Excellent narration and some great twists. Especially liked the way it combined real events into the story.

Have never listened to anything by this author before but I will now.

Oh thank goodness!

I am so addicted to this series and loved this latest installment. Even better, it's back to the more typical ghostly encounters (instead of the serial killer). I can't wait for the next book.

No more books for me.

I am not that excited to read a Mary O'Reilly book anymore. The past few books have just seemed like a massive let down. I finished this book in roughly three hours and I don't think I will continue on. The books have become rather slow with the twists and turns and also safer and less mysterious. In the first books, Mary was taken along for so many rides that went every single direction to have you become completely surprised at the end. Now I feel rather bored and have been able to guess the endings about half way through. It feels like Mary has become more of a housewife with the paranormal fun as an extra curricular activity when she has time or becomes bored.

Not perfect, but close

I still have some issues with the writing (more about that in a bit), but the multiple storylines were handled deftly and were pretty interesting.

Spoiler alert!

The issue of family counseling was finally tackled. I wish it had at least been hinted at at the end of "Bumpy Roads"--I might have been less unhappy with the book, and more temperate in my review.

I do have an issue with Rosie's character. There are times when she is allowed to be a competent woman who exudes almost Earth-Mother wisdom.

Couldn't Put It Down!

I bought Edna Buchanan's "Margin Of Error" many years ago, but never read it until several months ago. Since the character, Britt Montero, always makes reference to the prior news stories she has worked on, I went online and ordered all of the "Britt Montero" series. I read them in chronological order, to familiarize myself with the character and events that have taken place. I stated with "Contents Under Pressure" and ended with "Ice Maiden".

"Ice Maiden" captivated my interest from the start and even though I knew that a tragic and very unsatisfying ending was to come, I could not put the book down. I really don't understand why Edna Buchanan chose to eliminate the person who figured so prominently in Britt's life through all of her books, but I guess writers don't have to give a reason.

You must read all of Edna Buchanan's books.

Edna Buchanan's Miami 'mystery' novels are not to be missed. She is an award-winning journalist who draws on her years as a police-beat reporter to inject local color and situations into her well written books.
