    Title: Stalin's Gold
    Subtitle: A Frank Merlin Novel
    Author: Mark Ellis
    Narrator: Matt Addis
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-18-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
December 1938. Moscow. Josef Stalin has lost some gold. He is not a happy man. He asks his henchman, Beria, to track it down.
September 1940. London. Above the city the Battle of Britain rages, and the bombs rain down. On the streets below, DCI Frank Merlin and his officers investigate the sudden disappearance of Polish RAF pilot Ziggy Kilinski while also battling an epidemic of looting unleashed by the chaos and destruction of the Blitz.
Kilinskis fellow pilots, a disgraced Cambridge don, Stalins spies in London, members of the Polish government in exile and a ruthless Russian gangster are amongst those caught up in Merlins enquiries. Sweeping from Stalins Russia to Civil War Spain, from Aztec Mexico to pre-war Poland, and from Hitlers Berlin to Churchills London, a compelling story of treasure, grand larceny, treachery, torture and murder unfolds. Eventually, as Hitler reluctantly accepts that the defiance of the RAF has destroyed his chances of invasion for the moment, a violent shoot-out in Hampstead leads Merlin to the final truth...and Stalin to his gold.
Stalins Gold is the latest in the Frank Merlin Series and follows on from Princes Gate.

    London's wartime detective
Merlin has to struggle to do his work while London is being bombed. The find of a gold bar stamped with Polish markings leads his investigating their community. He is also asked to unofficially investigate the disappearance of a polish flyer. The night bombings, the fires and looters all make London a very dangerous place for Merlin and his team.
This is the second book in the Merlin chronicle and is as good as the first one. Read by the same narrator who adds depth and enjoyment to the characters.

    Any additional comments?
If you are a fan of the WW11 era and enjoy PI novels, this book is for you. I will say that there are a huge amount of characters and you might find it hard to keep up with for a few hours, but if you can deal with that then you will settle in to an engrossing, enjoyable and detailed story. The Narration was ok, decent accents but could have been better.
This is a mini journey through time where the era of ww11 is the destination, very riveting. I liked Frank marrow and his methods; gritty, tough and ruthless at times. I disliked how the story jumped about with so many characters; but as I said if you are able to keep up with that then this book is for you, and therefore a good reason for me not to mark it down as such.
    Great novel...thoroughly enjoyed.
Enjoyable listen, well written and well narrated. Would definitely recommend to all who are interested in detective novels around WWII.

    Action in overdrive!
This was so fast paced! Loved that. Not the first in the series but it bother the story but possibly there's more to it later? I listened for free for my review and though not usually a military type story this was throughly enjoyed!
Now I have to read the series!
Would you consider the audio edition of One Day in New York to be better than the print version?
Always is, but I only listened!
What other book might you compare One Day in New York to and why?
This is a supernatural mystery thriller....and its a good one....
Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafers other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have, and I like Jeffrey's narration...he has a great masculine deep voice..and makes the story even more intense!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was really not happy when the nun was almost violated....that is just so wrong!
    Any additional comments?
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
This was creepy from the start...a person being burnt on a cross is never a good sign! The story is quick and intense, and one you will not want to put down! Jake is an arkane agent and comes to NY to help investigate an ancient cross that may have fallen into the wrong hands...and gets more than what he bargains for....danger ensues and he finds himself having to make a decision that could possibly destroy the city but may help him get the revenge he has wanted for his family for a long time....Pretty good listen..and made me want to listen to the whole series! Great narration and I recommend!!

The Good, the Bad, and the Clueless.
I have never read this author before, but I will now! Novellas are not usually my thing, but this one is rather like a hook to get one addicted to others in the series. The protagonists feel real, and the visualization is clear and relatable. Good evidence of sound historical research and vivid imagination. See publisher's summary for lead in without spoilers. Be assured, this read is worth the time and money!
Sorry, but personally, I don't think that Kafer was a good fit here. His style is a little too detached for my taste. Good on a technical level, but just not engaged.

This is my first novel by Kylie Bryant
and I am going to read the other 2 just as fast as I can order them. This is a fast paced novel, police procedure with overtones of the FBI profilers only they are called mindhunters in this book and there was a movie by the same name starring William Peterson. All are excellent. Getting inside the head of a serial killer takes an unusual talent and gift and this girl has it and more. I will not depict the plot here, others have already done it better than I, but the fast pacing, excellent plotting and daredevil action cannot be beat. Sit down, settle down and enjoy a rollicking good read.

It's scones and scandal for Indigo Tea Shop owner Theodosia Browning in the latest from the New York Times best-selling author of Steeped in Evil....
Normally Theodosia wouldn't attend a black tie affair for all the tea in China. But she can hardly say no to her hunky, handsome boyfriend Max, who directs public relations for the Gibbes Museum in Charleston. Max has organized an amazing gala opening for an exhibit of a genuine 18th century Chinese teahouse, and the crème de la crème of Charleston society is invited.
In the exotic garden staged in the museum's rotunda, a Chinese dragon dances to the beat of drums as it weaves through the crowd. The guests are serenaded by a Chinese violin as they sample an assortment of tempting bites. And to give them a memento of the occasion, there's even a photo booth. But Theodosia makes a grim discovery behind the booth's curtains: the body of museum donor Edgar Webster.
While Theodosia prefers tea service over the service of justice, this case is difficult to ignore - especially after Max becomes a suspect. Now she must examine the life of the fallen philanthropist and find out who really wanted him to pay up....

    Great mystery crime novel.
I enjoyed listening to this story. Narration was engaging and entertaining. The characters are relatable and interesting.
    great story, excellent narration.
Excellent book, hard to put down. the narration was fantastic...as was the story line. I wasn't even half finished before I was eager to get my hands on his next book.
    Stop with the coffee
In all fairness, I didn't finish the book. Actually I didn't get past the 45 minute mark, but hear me out.
The narration was robotic, I mean, I have yet to listen to a narrator so un-engaged with a story line, but then when you consider the story, maybe it is understandable.
This is a story about someone who is supposed to find dangerous people or people who don't want to be found, but all they talk about is COFFEE. Just about every sentence has a reference to coffee in it. What the heck?
The interactions between characters is one dimensional and doesn't keep my interest at all. For example Mr. Finn's ex wife tells him that he needs to leave before her new man comes home and it is not that he came over for some kinky stuff, he was sitting there with his own sick daughter, but there is no explanation on why he can't be in the house. Every character interaction is like that, no dimension and no sense. No thank you.
The only reason I am not returning this is that I only paid $1.99 for it and I am not that petty, but I will not be wasting my time on it any longer.
Very detailed discription, on the events happening
Detailed discription on the events happening at that time. Great narration. Kept me intense on what was to happen next
    review
the story hit a few hard-to-believe bumps but it was an exilerating ride nonetheless. I would recommend it.

Norfolk is experiencing a July heat wave when a construction crew unearths a macabre discovery - a buried World War II plane with the pilot still inside. Forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway quickly realizes that the skeleton couldn't possibly be the pilot, and DNA tests identify the man as Fred Blackstock, a local aristocrat who had been reported dead at sea.
When the remaining members of the Blackstock family learn about the discovery, they seem strangely frightened by the news. Events are further complicated by a TV company that wants to make a film about Norfolk's deserted air force bases, the so-called Ghost Fields, which have been partially converted into a pig farm run by one of the younger Blackstocks. As production begins, Ruth notices a mysterious man lurking close to the Blackstocks' family home. Then human bones are found on the family's pig farm.

All in all, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?
This was not my favorite in the series, to say the least. Perhaps I would like it more if I had read it, as I did any of the previous books. I do give credit to the narrator for her gift with accents (although why can't they ever "do" American) and her female voices are good but the male characters are all are very poorly interpreted, which is quite off putting. Nelson sounds like a dolt and Cathbad's dreamy, mystical sound is trite.
I look forward to each new Elly Griffiths mystery but in this one, I identified the killer very early on...not satisfying at all. Also, I am kind of bored with the whole Ruth/Nelson thing....fish or cut bait, already!
(Oh, nuts, I'm sounding like quite a curmudgeon!) Read the series in order...I loved the early books!
    Another winner!
Always difficult for me to put down Elly's mysteries. More Ruth Galloway mysteries for us please!
    Love Ruth series
Always learn something and enjoy characters and mystery. This reader is so enjoyable. Story keeps getting better
    Elly does it yet again!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would recommend this audiobook to a friend. The writer Domenica de Rosa, writing as Elly Griffiths pens one great book after another. I have purchased and read all of them and am just now starting on her newest series, The Zig Zag girl. I have not doubt this series will not disappoint either. History, archeology, a little bit of romance, or maybe I should say love, no graphic sordid sex scenes, good mystery and human interactions.
What did you like best about this story?
In this series, Elly weaves story lines based on archeological/ historical events. Two of my interests. She does not preach using these lines of a story though. Informative Her characters, come alive. You can imagine each of them living their lives long after you finish the latest story. Louise Penny's characters and a few other authors characters are people I think about when not in the book as well, even though I know they are fictional. That to me is a mark of a good book.
The character development, I would say is what I liked best about this book and her others as well. They become old friends you want to visit in the next book in the series.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene when Frank shows Ruth the mural on the wall of what is now a pig farm barn, but was a US air force building during WWII.
